I love this chocolate babka!! I'm embarrassed by how obsessed I am with them (esp since it's terrible for my waistline) but every time I walk by, I want two loafs in my belly! It's best to get them when they're fresh and still soft (instead of dried and hard). A little pop into the microwave helps in a pinch! Now I'm craving another babka and have to come back asap. read more

Two words -- Chocolate Babka That's it, that's the review. No for real though, you can't go to New York and not stop at one of the different locations Bread's has across the city and try some of the best babka to ever exist. The chocolate one is my favorite because it is filled with rich, sweet, melty chocolate that goes straight to your soul with each bite The chocolate is woven with flaky, buttery bread and together they're a match made in heaven. Brought back a whole loaf home and wished I'd gotten way more! Go try some chocolate babka - your life will never be the same again! read more

I try to avoid sugar and I guess bread for that matter. But what I want to be "bad" Breads Bakery is my place to find food decadence. Their pastries are consistently good. I especially like the almond croissant which has just the right filling and a flake crispy outside. There are some seats to enjoy your bread or pasty outside, and limited seating inside. I have also found their lunch sandwiches good. Service is quick and there are pans of treats everywhere so you get that bakery ambiance. read more

Trusted bakery, Always consistent. Typical NYC prices. Their babkas are to die for. We regularly get the 2/$8 baguette deal, but they don't keep past the same day. Also regularly get the delicious Challah which will last for days if you devour it in one sitting. read more

They make a very yummy latte and the staff are very friendly. The breakfast items are to die for!! I wasn't ready for anything heavy but they had egg sandwiches and different croissants type sandwiches. All the coffee is in the back area so you do get an eye full of their amazing baked goods! read more

I love this place. Babka, bread, all of it is good!! If I'm in the area, I can never resist a chocolate babka. Heat it up in the toaster oven when you get home, 350, for about 3 - 5 minutes and it tastes like heaven. Have it with some coffee and you'll start your day right. I promise. Also you can't go wrong with their olive bread. It's so flavorful. read more

I've been coming to Breads since they opened and they never disappoint. On this visit picked up some croissants and of course their babka ( I prefer Zabar's babka to theirs but Breads' is a close second place and more convenient to me.) Also went to the back counter to get sandwiches and the fresh mint tea. I absolutely LOVE their Tunisian sandwich-the combination of tuna, potatoes and eggs with some harissa is magical. And it doesn't matter what kind of bread it's served on. You must try this sandwich. It paired nicely with the fresh mint tea. They also have heat lamps in their outdoor cafe which kept me warm on a chilly December day. I will always have a warm place in my heart for Breads. read more

My favorite bakery may have to be Michaelis! It's crazy that I've been to Michaelis more times than I've ever been to Breads Bakery. Apparently, the main baker at Michaelis started out here! I came after a work out class. My favorite croissant used to be the almond croissant, so I had to try the one here. It wasn't bad. It was a little too flat and too sweet for my liking. I would come back to try the other things though! read more

Delicious baguette and rugelach. The brownie was a nice, dense chocolaty brownie, not the fluffy kind -- very enjoyable! They did not have donuts even though there are pictures of some. Perhaps they ran out by the afternoon or maybe they don't sell them at all. read more

I happened to walk by and the window is inviting. I went inside and it's didn't smell like a bread bakery...Or a bakery at all. I mean it's probably just me but I was totally expecting to be slapped in the nostrils with the smell of baked goods. Maybe they just opened? The cashier was pretty pleasant though. They had some salads out and I was going to get one but decided to go for a pretzel instead. I probably should have went for a salad. The pretzel was extremely soft which was great. It was a bit over salted which wasn't too big of a deal since I was able to dust most of it off but the problem for me was it had a weird after taste... It almost tasted like it was an everything pretzel but where you weren't abele to see the extra seasonings. It wasn't horrible, but not what I was expecting and not what I wanted. There were some brownies and cookies there but none that I wanted. They did have a cinnamon roll but it looked like a roll just sprinkled with the cinnamon sugar. That may not be what it was but I didn't want to find out. They also had various loaves of bread around behind the shelf and customer accessible. This bakery isn't along my route so I wouldn't go out of my way to come but if I was in the area I may check it out again to see if it's the same or if I'm willing to try again. read more

Two words: chocolate babka. My friend introduced me to this spot and we were lucky enough to grab the last one off the shelf around 1pm on a Sunday. They had a couple of the cinnamon ones left as well. It's decadent, sweet but not overwhelming, and overall a delicious treat! We also got the parmesan cookies, which were more like parmesan crisps but were good as well. Will definitely be coming back to get more and try some of their other pastries as well. read more

Always the place to go for something sweet or a pastry. They really mastered them!!! Service is nice and fast. This is our place to get Rugelach and Babka! Absolutely delish!!!! The rugelach can last actually a few days and will still taste fresh. I actually try to avoid going near coz everytime I amm close to the bakeey I just need to make a stop and buy something lol Aso tried their croissants which are YUM! Same for baguette! Coffees are also realy good, only tried the iced latte though Definitely one of the best bakeries in ny. Would love to try more things from them. Def recommended!!! read more

Love coming here - the first time I tried the mini rugelach, I was in love!! Even though I'm not a chocolate lover. Also I thoroughly enjoy the chocolate babka a lot. I recently had the May special cheesecake babka - it was a subtle sweetness (which I prefer), but probably wouldn't have it again. Overall, great tasting bakery. We bought a banana chocolate chip bread yesterday afternoon around 3PM. There were dozens of loaves on the shelf and I took one at random from the front of one of the shelves. Today, 24 hours later, it is covered in mold. Was it moldy when I bought it and I didn't notice? How long had it been on the shelf? They should time-stamp their items. And I should be able to let the bread sit for a day without worrying about mold. It's not like it sat in heat or humidity, it was in an air-conditioned house. Our coconut chocolate chip loaf is fine. We're going to stick that in the fridge. read more

Stopped in after hearing about their Chocolate Babka. Most of the outdoor seats were taken early evening around 6. Unfortunately they don't have a single Babka serving (slice). So the friendly lady who helped me suggested I try a Rugelach as it was similar to the Babka. Mini pastry with hints of chocolate paired nicely with my double cappuccino. Back to the Chocolate Babka. I ended up getting a loaf to take home. They will be okay outside for 3-4 days (advice was to not refrigerate as this will dry it out). Amazing Babka! Not too sweet and just the right balance of chocolate filling. Family wanted another loaf or two! A good amount of baked items to choose from and friendly/upbeat people serving up delicious Coffee and desserts. The Rugelach was similar but is not a substitute for the Babka which is not to be missed! read more

Joint bakery and cafe. Easy access to Union Square and the subway. Workers are kind, smart, and professional. It is not cheap here. But you get a good product. Smoked salmon on Jerusalem Baguette is a delight. Happily enjoyed a cheese straw! Probably will not order so much next time. Apple pie is good, but I am not wow'd by it. N, Q, R, W, 4, 5, 6, and L trains get you here. Elaine and Jerry would never dispute their babka. Really, they have plenty of babka. Absolutely would recommend and return. -- Read it carefully and you will see what Breads Bakery reminds me of. That is not a bad thing. Met a friend for breakfast while in the city. Great place- lots of bread options as well as a few sandwiches to choose from. COVID report: Breads has some outdoor seating right now. I was getting items to-go so I didn't see whether it's heated or not. The food: I stopped in during Purim to grab some hamantaschen and they were absolutely amazing. The apple was my favorite, though the chocolate was also fab. Chocolate babka is still perfect, too. I have no idea what their other items taste like (though I'm sure they're exceptional), because every time I come here I get their chocolate babka. It's the best babka I've ever had, hands down. They use a mixture of nutella and chocolate chips, which makes it oh-so-decadent, while still not being overly sweet. Warm it up in the oven for an experience that will leave you in ecstasy. It's a great gift too for someone outside of NYC as it travels well. One of my friends I recently gifted a Breads babka to remarked "I wish I saved more for myself" after he shared some with his family before trying it himself. Greatness must be recognized and celebrated. Well done Breads Bakery, well done. read more

I try to stop by Breads every time I'm in the Union Square area. If you love being greeted by a whiff of delicious, buttery, freshly baked pastries, this spot is for you. I haven't had a bad thing from here and still have so many things to try. The babka is always a safe option but I usually go for the Rugelach if I'm by myself and want a smaller bite of something. There's also a seating area in the back that's great if you want a quick place to rest your legs from walking. Love this spot! read more

I never thought chocolate babka would be something I dreamed about but now it is!!! Was finally able to try their famous chocolate babka and OHMYGOD was it amazing!!!! I think they use a few different types of chocolate and it's quite sweet but somehow still very addicting. It's a good mix of semi sweet and dark chocolate notes. The bread itself is quite fluffy and moist!! It's great heated but honestly pretty good cold too as long as it hasn't been in the fridge too long. It's been within the first few days of purchasing. Overall definitely recommend and would like to try their other items! read more

Having heard so much about Breads bakery I wanted to try it. I was around the Bryant park location. Had 2 potato borekas they were outstanding. Had to try the famous babka which they sell by the slice as well as a whole cake. I was pretty impressed with the babka as well. Would highly recommend any of their locations . I wish I could express in words how much I LOVE this place. I come over an hour early to work just to stop by and pick up some fresh pastries!! I highly recommend coming early and trying the rugelach, classic croissant, spinach bureka and almond croissant. If you don't come early enough, the rugelach will run out!! If you want to start off your morning happy, full of life, and serene I'm telling you - get a pastry from here. The lines are a bit long in the morning so be mindful how crowded it can be!! I can't wait to continue trying new pastries here - what a gem. It is a little pricey but well worth it. I wish I could have this place every day - it would probably not be enough. Amazing chocolate rugelach! I got one early morning and if this wasn't the most buttery, rich, perfectly balanced chocolate pastry I've had! I've only had rugelach a handful of times prior so definitely not a pro by any means. However, the ones here were so so so good. The pastry part was flaky and had a noticeable taste of egg wash over it. The chocolate was plentiful But not overpowering. Every bite felt decadent, but the pastry was just small enough to not feel overwhelming to finish. After trying the rugelach, I want to come back and try everything else! read more

How long can a load of coconut chocolate stay fresh?

I'd keep it in the fridge max 1 week (but I guess that it will be difficult to be diligent with portions). I nuke pieces for 30-40 seconds and it does the trick.

I'd recommend no more than a couple of days (should reheat it to soften it up, and it tastes better), otherwise, just freeze it and it defrosts beautifully.

I loved the red mushroom one which is a creamy pink mousse inside the cap. The stalk is a thin porcelain-white chocolate light base also filled with a rich cream. Adjacent are two cute little tree nuts. The orange and mango have such vivid colors and are aesthetically pleasing too. Just like the previous ones, their delicate chocolate exterior houses a rich tarty mousse-y filling. I think the mushroom has a better balance and variety of flavors. Although I don't eat mousse treats often, I look forward to trying some of the other ones in the future, like the blueberry, banana and cloud.

It was deeply surprising that they don't sell the butter cookies that had jam in the middle and dipped with chocolate on one side with sprinkles. I did ask the clerk and even showed him a pic of what I was looking for and he said they never sold them. They only had the linzer cookies and they didn't look so good. They also did not have the lobster tail. They did have the sfogliatelle which they also called a lobster tail. I thought they were not the same? Some bakeries sell both and they are definitely not the same. I did end up buying one of their sfogliatelle with cream and some rugelachs. The sfogliatelle was good but the rugelachs tasted slightly underbaked. It did taste fresh though unlike many I've had in other bakeries. However, for $28 per pound, I wouldn't get it again. For those not having lobster tail and not having the Italian cookies, I will have to give Veniero's a low rating. I never thought an Italian bakery would not carry staples. Very disappointed. I need to find another Italian bakery now.
