We are relatively new to the Woodside Plaza neighborhood and this is within walking distance of our house. We are so grateful for the wonderful Breakers café. The food is tasty and the staff is just the best. Plenty of coffee refills, tasty lattes, and DELICIOUS egg dishes. If you are a bacon lover, try any omelet with bacon. Unlike most places that give you a few crumbs of bacon for flavor, Breakers loads it on and it is just so, so good. As pleasing as the food is, my highest compliments go to the staff. One Sunday when I was especially craving coffee, I spilled my Starbucks latte all over my car because of the stupid Starbucks plastic lids that do not fit snugly. I was feeling very sad about that, so I went to Breakers for a coffee, and then -- this was a very bad day -- I proceeded to spill that entire cup all over my table. At that point, I figured no coffee for me, but my wonderful server (I wish I knew her name) came and offered me another at no charge. I guess it's not very different from getting your cup refilled, but she was so kind and solicitous that it made me feel so much better about the whole bad morning. Now that's service! read more

This is a well run family style old fashioned breakfast and lunch coffee shop that used to be a mainstay in this country. Now they are not so common, especially in the SF Bay Area. Breakers Cafe has excellent food and service. We love to have brunch there on the weekends and it is really great. The food is outstanding, as is the service. Prices are very reasonable. I am fond of this place for a quick bite. They'll make you anything breakfast related and more.. Eggs, potatoes, hash browns, country fried potatoes, pancakes ,sausage , bacon, you name it. $4 bottomless Coffee. Espresso drinks as well. Donuts, danishes and muffins are on display up front. Always greeted with friendly and professional staff. However, their Biscuits and Gravy was slightly disappointing. The buttery and flaky biscuit I expected was spongy and lifeless. This place had a nice set up and great customer service all the way around but unfortunately I most likely won't be back. The food was just okay in my opinion. Nothing special about it at all. Sad to report but there's something's broken at Breakers these days. Dilapidated booth seating, poorly prepared food and aggressively high prices are hindering this formerly solid breakfast & lunch option. Mistakes like poached eggs delivered "hard boiled" rather than runny & yummy, potato salad that smelled funky and tasted worse, burgers that were beyond dry and a dim version of their advertised 1/2 lb. weight class made our recent visit a bit of a deal-breaker. We did appreciate the efficient and hard working host & wait-staff + the general impression of cleanliness in the restaurant. read more

I dont know WHY I haven't sone this before. Today it dawned on me. "I go to breakers every weekend, sometimes Saturday AND Sunday. Why haven't I written a review on yelp?" Breakers is busy for all the RIGHT reasons! No matter how busy the servers are, they are kind, respectable, and most of all, they always make time to connect with their customers. My dad and I agree, all of the servers share these attributes. I dont know how the owner did it, but this is the dream team!! Our server (almost) every weekend is Joyce. She is all of the things you need in a server, a friend, AND MORE! For the past year, Joyce, no matter how stressed she is with tables, SHE WONT BREAK! She never complains, or speaks negative, about anything! (Ive tried, believe me! ) She is one of the strongest servers ive came across. Her personality, and her hard work, is the reason we come back. But I must reflect back to the staff, again.its not just Joyce who has been our server. Everybody has! My dad and I look forward for the weekends, so we can eat breakfast at a place of familia! My numerous experiences at Breakers Cafe over the past few years has always been for breakfast. Portions are large but given the prices, I would rather have smaller portions and better quality. Over time quality seems to have gradually gone down. Coffee is always readily replenished but it is poor quality. The highlights? Umm...hmm...reading at some of the negative reviews here on Yelp on Breakers Cafe makes me wonder...what exactly were they expecting? I'll make no pretense about this cafe, it's a local mom and pop coffee shop that serves your average American breakfast and lunch items to the locals (particularly those that are closer to Woodside than Redwood City). For what it is, I think Breakers Cafe is a worthy place to dine in on a lazy Sunday morning. The cafe is pretty charming actually. Stepping inside you'll get a sense of history about the place. Family photos are posted behind the counter, and the staff has an easy going attitude that...well...makes you easy going as well. There are regulars that come in and out that the owners greet on a first name basis. Furthermore, it's clearly a local shop as conversations can be heard between the staff and regulars about their daily lives. It's definitely a nice place to just put pause on your life, and enjoy a cup of coffee...and an omelet. The food here is done well. It's not spectacular, but by the end of the meal, their shouldn't be any disappointment given the atmosphere of the cafe. Eggs are done well, breakfast items come with toast and potatoes. Just keep in mind that they use store bought orange juice, and the line cooks are just line cooks, not gourmet chefs whipping up an omelet. As long as your expectations are real, then Breakers Cafe should be a pleasantly calming experience. read more

My bf had the meat lovers omelet and he would have preferred they scramble the eggs and everything together, rather than wrap up all the meat in an already cooked egg omelet. If that makes sense. Came here with a friend first thing in the morning to take advantage of the TV and watch some tennis with our breakfast. My tofu scramble ($9.50) was okay. It was really just tofu cubes sautéed with veggies, which... eh? It tasted fine but I prefer places that actually make some effort to make a vegetarian scramble taste/look like a scramble (use soft tofu and not firm cubes and flavor with turmeric and nutritional yeast, it's actually pretty easy). My country potatoes were well-cooked, and I appreciated the tea selection which was a lot nicer than the usual diner teabags. Service was friendly. I was a little put off though when someone started scrubbing a surface near us with some sort of smelly Palmolive green dish soap crap, as the smell mixed with the smell of our food for a while. After tax/tip it was $16 for a basic breakfast scramble and tea. All in all not bad food and I'm glad I finally tried out Breakers, but I'm likely not returning. read more

This place is near our house, yet somehow we'd never been. There's a pet friendly patio. Unfortunately, we didn't know that until we got there, but that's definitely a reason to return. The space is old, a bit dingy, and the food took awhile to come. That being said, the service was pleasant, drinks were kept refilled, and the food was good. Not amazing, but worth a return trip.. Waffles aren't the thick Belgian style I prefer, but they had great flavor and the crunch was surprisingly good. The space is huge, and if you ever need to have brunch with a large , (which happens to us often) this place can easily accommodate. Boy has this place gone down hill. I really love the family operated angle, but the whole place seems in need of an upgrade. We sat and waited several minutes before anyone even noticed us. When the waitress happened by she asked if we had been served. They brought us one water, guess we were supposed to share. The coffee was not that good, but since no one every offered me a second cup, I guess I can't really give it a fair shake. The food was fair, again didn't show any special caring about the prep or presentation. Bacon extra crispy. A little overpriced to me for the quality. I would pay the same for a great meal. Breakers is a neighborhood joint, so I really wanted to like it. But when it comes to execution, Breakers doesn't do anything right. Food is mediocre at best. Waffles are small and way overdone to the point of crispiness. The "hash browns" are a joke - know how I know the chef just sliced a potato in half, grilled it face down, and cut and served it up? Because the potato cubes were still partially sticking together, and it was grilled only on one side (i.e. the face down side). This is just plain lazy. Cleanliness is poor, too. My silverware was very sticky, and there was actually lipstick - LIPSTICK - on my water glass. When I asked for another one, they didn't even bat an eye or ask me why another glass in addition to my 100% full one was needed. This indicates uncaring service. Agreed with some of the previous comments, you do have to adjust your expectations. Nevertheless, there are some basics that I expect of any breakfast place, no matter how small. The setting is definitely nice, and the family owned angle is a plus. This place has character! However, the coffee they serve has to rank amongst the worst I've ever had -- airline coffee level. To be upfront, I have a hard time getting past this factor given how much I like coffee. Setting that aside, the food overall is decent, but frankly I expect much better from a family owned place -- they should have more latitude to be special and serve awesome simple food. But this just isn't the case. And I will second the comments regarding cost...I can't get out of there without spending thirty dollars for two people (when my sense of value says it's worth maybe $18). Can't tell you how disappointing this is for me given that I don't live too far away. Anyways, on a lazy sunday, this place would rank in a fourth or fifth position in terms of eating options. THE REASON WHY THEY ARE CALLED COUNTRY POTATOES IS BECAUSE IN THE COUNTRY (i.e. the south) THEY FRY THEM IN BUTTER CREATING A GOLDEN BROWN CRISP! And the waitress tells me thats why they're not called "country fried potatoes"! Doesn't matter, country potatoes are made how they would be in the country. The potatoes made me realize how dumb this place really is. I actually thought the men in the kitchen that were giving rude looks were going to spit in the food. I know this place has mixed reviews, however Mom and I come here periodically for breakfast and never had a problem. Our food was always delicious (they seriously have the best french toast - nice thick slices with a thin coating of brown sugar and cinnamon - not sickly sweet, but just enough for a nice flavor), and the service has been great. To me, the prices were not that bad, especially for this area (it's comparable to Stack's and Squeeze In). I can't speak for everyone, but I think it's definitely worth checking out! read more
