The Covey is exactly what you would imagine a "boy's club" to be plus the trophy wives.
The Scene
Large fireplace, brown leather, burgundy velvet chairs, and a sparkling view of the lake. The Covey is a gorgeous restaurant, which I imagine would be even prettier at sunset, however, it is a boy's club. We walked in and were younger than everyone by, well... a LOT, and were treated accordingly. Not that the service was bad, but the waiter treated us like we were ignorant hillbillies....you know, "the oysters are raw" and "medium rare means you will see blood"...the kind of comments that maybe I would need when I was 6.
The men were all older, and their "wives" were definitely all nip tucked. Not that I was spying, but the man was talking loud enough that I could hear him my entire dinner, and definitely boring his poor date to death....the man, ( a poker champion by his description), was describing poker games hand by hand....wow....this is never date conversation...EVER! However, I do see this as a wonderful date spot, just be prepared for the older more affluent crowd.
The Food
Oyster-served with maine-wianno and horseradish mignonette-these were delicious, local, of course, 6 for $17....not bad, but I like a variety of oysters, so 6 of the same kind, a little boring
Foie Gras Torchon-kumquat jam, rhubarb confit, toasted brioche, herb salad -I LOVE foie gras, and this was delicious....3rd best I've ever had...which is saying a lot, I order foie gras anytime it's on a menu...however, I digress, kumquat combined with foie is genius! The tartness of the kumquat balances the fattyness of the foi perfectly...YUM!
Sonoma Duck-pan seared breast, fava bean purée, carrot fondant, toasted fennel seed jus -Obviously, I live for duck in all forms...so, this one was good...not amazing, but good. Perfectly seared, not overdone, and not gamey at all. But, nothing stood out as amazing about this duck.
Colorado Rack of Lamb-ratatouille tart, aged balsamic, grilled porcini, nicoise olive jus-The lamb was a winner! Medium rare perfection, the balsamic gave just enough flavor to enhance the meat, but not enough to take away from it. The mushrooms were reduced just enough to make them tender, but not mushy. Order it, the lamb was amazing.
Vacherin-meringue crisp, vanilla bean ice cream
hot chocolaté-I am a sucker for meringue, so obviously I ordered this...it was delicious, although very chocolatey ... not that this is a problem, just a warning to those who might be overly full from dinner
Tarte Tatin-granny smith apple, caramel ice cream- Delicious, flaky crust, not oversugared apples, and wow....caramel ice cream! read more
