I recently seriously limited dairy and gluten, so I realize I'm not their ideal customer. The guys who were working that evening were able to help me find a drink that worked with my dietary restrictions... it was the passion fruit boba tea. It was really refreshing! Not too sweet, and flavorful. The desserts in the case looked so delicious, but unfortunately they don't have any gluten free pastries, so I wasn't able to try them out. Yay! A Boba tea and bakery spot! Brecotea is about 7 minutes away from Short Pump Town Center area; it's in the shopping center near David's Bridal. It's near Tuesday Morning, and in between Sushi King and a vape shop. Easy to find, easy to park, plenty of seating to enjoy a little dessert break. Cool decor, tan chairs, a wooden railing type thing on the wall and ceiling. There's a cool floral wall, of course for the 'gram and Yelp pics. More for the 'gram I'd say. Lol. Great lighting as well. They serve regular teas and milk teas, hot and cold. The base price was $3.75 and goes up with extra toppings. They have Mille (crepe) cakes here!!!! They also have a great selection of self-serve baked goods in a case along the wall. You grab a tray, parchment paper, and tongs, grab what you want, take to the counter and pay. The day we went, they had "Dirty Matcha" buns, chocolate buns, a Strawberry Stick (looks like a big eclair/cream puff but the cream was on top, with strawberries.) There was also a chocolate version of this. They had Red Bean buns, custard filled pastries, and a few savory selections. (Hi, bacon & cheese stick/bun! Come to Mama!) Hubby chose a cold Caramel Milk Tea + Boba. I had an Oreo Milk Tea + Boba. I assumed mine would be too sweet but I was pleasantly surprised with the perfect light chocolate milk tea flavor with Oreo bits, topped with crushed Oreos. Boba was sweet and cooked perfectly. We also split a Matcha Green Tea Mille Cake. Everything I imagined it would be, but I wish I got a Strawberry flavored slice as well. Total for our drinks & one slice of cake was $15 and change. Before leaving, I also got a Strawberry custard pastry and one Bacon and cheese bun. Total for those 2 was only $4.58! Awesome service for both times I went up to the counter. We can here after having lunch next door because my daughter wanted bubble tea and we'd never been here so we figured we'd try it out. She wanted a fruity bubble tea like she had gotten previously at a nearby pho restaurant so we ordered her a strawberry orange tea. We didn't know when we ordered that it would take over a half hour to get one drink, because they had a huge order from one group and where busy filling door dash orders before in person ones, nor how much we would dislike it. Out of our household of 5 none of us could drink it, even my oldest son who likes weird stuff. We assumed the crystals were like bubbles but they weren't. The first sip my daughter took almost made her hurl because she sucked up a large chunk of jam like it was a ball of mucus. I saw they put jam in it but I assumed it would be blended better. The place was full of people from the large order so there was also no where to sit and wait for our one drink. My son raves about this place and understands the menu better so he will probably take our daughter back to get something she would like better. I always love coming to Brecotea when visiting my hometown. The quality of the tea & boba is just fantastic. The boba always comes out warm with the absolute perfect texture. The employees are also always a delight and willing to answer any questions. The ambiance is where they really shine though. The seating & decor makes for the perfect photo opportunity. They also have little claw machines for the kids however those were out of order when I went today. They also offer various different kinds of cute desserts and breads! Definitely going to have to give those a try the next time I'm in town. My mom got the brown sugar cake shake and by the name I thought it'd have little bits of cake in it or something but surprisingly it didn't and was really smooth. She rates it an 8/10. Brecotea is a breath of fresh air and a great addition to the Asian food scene in Richmond, VA. I met up with a friend here and it was a good spot to hangout. If you have ever been to an 85 C Bakery (more popular in SoCal or Taiwan) then you get the idea. For others who aren't familiar with concept, it's essentially an Asian Starbucks that sells Boba drinks and a variety of different pastries. Brecotea offers a varied selection of fruity drinks as well as milky drinks. I got their signature milk tea with milk cap. Mine was way too sweet but the boba itself was cooked perfectly; it was slightly chewy and soft. I wish they provided me some suggestions based on sweetness but maybe that was my mistake for not asking. They also have a fairly extensive pastry case in which you grab a tray and grab whatever pastries you want and pay for what you get. I noticed the following pastries on my visit: pastries filled with various types of sweet creams, red bean, egg tarts, and an assortment of others. I got a pastry with some sort of sweet cream filling which was tasty but nothing too different from what I've had before. For a pastry and a drink my total came out close to $8 which is a bit high for me. I want to come back and check out some of their other pastries and hopefully find a drink to my liking. read more

The shop is aesthetic, and for all those Instagrammers, there is a beautiful flower ombre backdrop for people to take pictures with. I definitely recommend the grapefruit tea. It's not too sweet or sour. It comes with 2 grapefruit slices, which I eat when I am done with my drink. However, the fresh fruit tea drinks are more expensive compared to other bubble tea places ($5.25). Not many places sell grapefruit tea, so I like coming here if I'm in the Glen Allen area. read more

You can't really find a nice tea shop like this in downtown richmond. Most people drive to VCU for a decent tea place but I'm driving from VCU just to get tea here. I've tried all of the fruit teas, and grapefruit is probably my favorite. I love the signature milk tea, but the problem is, it's not really milk tea. It'a just cream and brown sugar. Probably the best boba so far in greater Richmond area. I've heard their fruit milk teas are good, but I'm a black milk tea girl. FYI the signature milk tea is just MILK, NO TEA. That's my go-to drink at every boba place. The signature milk tea is usually the basic black milk tea. However I was taken aback and a little annoyed by the misnomer. It's just sweet milk and boba. If you're looking for BMT, order the boba milk tea which is the black milk tea. Boba is cooked well, soft and not too chewy, but depends on your preference. Black milk tea was a bit too milky and could've used more tea, but again that's probably personal preference. I LOVEEE that they have pastries though. What I love about this place is that you can also pick up some pastries from an assortment of flavors and styles. They have savory options like buns with pork floss on top, and they have Asian style sweet options like dirty matcha buns and egg tarts. The decor is also so cute. They have vines and a huge flower board that's perfect for any cute Instagram picture. When I went, my friend got a traditional style bubble tea with a milk cap on the top. I would liken the taste of a milk cap to a kind of cream cheesy flavor. It's a nice amalgamation of sweet yet salty. They also have a lot of options to add to the bubble tea like pearls, lychee jelly, and other jellies. I also loved their packaging. They have this cute heart that stops the bubble tea from spilling. I'm late to the whole bubble tea thing, but I tried it a couple weeks ago downtown and loved it. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find a place in the west end that just opened. There was a whole wall of sweet and savory bakery items. I got the strawberry custard pastry, just because strawberry anything is my favorite. My drink was a passion fruit tea with bubbles added on. It was tasty, they put a slice of lime in it and the bubbles (made it a challenge to get the bubbles at the end) . My drink was good, but I did think it would be a bit sweeter though. My only issue was it was tough figuring out what to get off the menu and the language barrier made it hard to get what I needed to decide. Brecotea offers more of an artisan type of bubble tea experience than other places in Richmond. I did not see the use of any powders so I applaud them for using fresh ingredients! Though they don't explicitly state it on their menu, I don't think they pre-sweeten their teas so you can adjust your level of sweetness for each drink I believe. Even though I do like how they don't fill up your cup with 80% ice, I wish that the cold drinks were served colder (perhaps shaken for a bit longer)--but that's my personal preference. Overall, their teas are pretty subtle in flavor and sweetness. They also have cheese foam which is basically a sweetened whipped cream cheese--it's tastier than it sounds and provides a slightly salty/savory contrast to the sweet drinks. I found that the foam overpowered some of the more subtle tea flavors, like the oolong, and will probably opt not to have it on certain flavors. The back right wall of the cafe is a large case of a la carte baked items. They're not quite on the same level as those you can find in NoVa. For example, the durian pineapple had a lot of potential, but the bread was a little dense and the proportion of filling to bread was off. I also found the match dirty bread to be dense. My boyfriend did enjoy his savory bun with the pork floss. I enjoyed the almond cookies which were crispy and had plenty of almonds. They also have a refrigerated case up front with various cakes, pastries, and macarons. They're rose mille crepe cake was decent and had a light rose flavor with a rose gelee on top. Texturally, it wasn't as lofty and light as other crepe cakes I have tried and I definitely think that the overall flavor may be too "perfumy" for some. I'll have to try their regular and matcha flavors next time in order to truly compare them to places like Lady M's. As for service, I think Brecotea is still trying to find its stride. They seem pretty overwhelmed and don't quite have a good flow yet in handling the register and producing the orders. You'll probably find yourself waiting to place an order as well as waiting for the order itself. I decided to try this place out after hearing about it and seeing it advertised on IG. When you walk in, it's very clean and aesthetically pleasing. If you walk past the counter and go straight, they have their pastries. I didn't buy any but it's nice to have them since there is nowhere else in RVA has something like this (with my knowledge) unless you go up to NoVA. I went up to order and I had to wait since the workers were making some drinks which I understand since I also work at a bubble tea place. But their customer service is the reason why I'm only giving 3 stars. A worker finally came up and asked what I would like to order. I would've liked if she asked how I was doing or said hello. I ordered 2 drinks. But she never asked me if I wanted to adjust the sweetness or ice amount. It doesn't even say you could it on the menu. I gave her money to pay, but she placed my change on the counter. This part really bothered me and I found it disrespectful because my hand was already out to receive it. I guess that's how they were trained and maybe they didn't want to transfer germs. I probably waited 5-7 minutes for my drinks. They call out by the number and the drink. The drinks I got were Passionfruit Green Tea with 50% sweetness and less ice and Signature Milk Tea which already comes with tapioca. I could've lessen the sweetness for the milk tea but I liked their drinks. I wish I could've tasted more of the tea in the Milk Tea. After we sat down and drank a little bit, we left but we weren't greeted out. TL;DR the drinks were good but the customer service worsened the experience. Was recommended to go to this place by a cousin of mine. It's hard to find a place like this in Virginia - so happy that one has popped up in this area. Had the chance to try their mango milk cap tea. While it was good, it was very different from what I'm used to. I think it had mango pulp in it? Not sure how I feel about the milk cap paired with it, but the mango part had the right flavour. I also love their selection of Asian baked goods. They have a great variety from mille cakes, to durian bread. I ended up getting a dragon fruit & ube bun (didn't taste the dragon fruit/has golden raisins in the filling which were an unpleasant surprise), pork floss bun(yum!) and bonito flake/green onion bun (this could use something to make it a tad more savoury). Overall, I'd say my fave is the pork floss bun. It's kind of like a sweet and salty angel food cake, covered in pork floss... Which makes everything better. They also have a flower wall that is great for ig/photos, which would be fun if you're out with a group of friends and want to take some fun pics. BrecoTea (next to Sushi King) had their grand opening today. With TJ Maxx now closed, it's not difficult to find parking. Upon entering the store, you would notice that the layout makes it seem very small despite there being seating for approximately 20 people, but the place is really cute and cozy. In the back of the store, you have the baked goods (different types of buns), where you can grab on your own with provided tongs and trays. Towards the front of the store, you have the counter where you order your drinks and other sweets (different types of cakes). You can compare the items they offer to Shilla Bakery up in Annandale. I'd have to say that overall, this place has been very underwhelming for me. The advertised drinks and baked goods look delicious. However, after tasting some of their items - they just weren't that good. I tried their signature milk tea, I think they forgot to put in the tea, it tasted like straight cream! And the boba was really chewy. It was so bad, I actually didn't finish my drink. The pastries we tried were just okay, nothing memorable. All of them had the same taste, despite it having different flavors in the names (purple sweet potato, matcha what? Didn't taste any of that). I understand that today's their first day but the place seemed like they weren't trained enough to receive customers. The trays placed for people to grab their buns were not cleaned off by staff before putting them back for use, you could still see crumbs on the trays used from previous customers. The buns were "sold out" weren't being replenished, yet they were seen baking other buns that still had plenty left in the cases. The people making the drinks were not calling orders out consistently, they would just leave them on the counter and not say anything or sometimes they would call out the name of the drink, and other times they would call out the receipt number. (Which by the way, I opted out of a receipt to save paper so I didn't know what my order number was when they called out mine. You may want to opt to have a receipt printed!) I noticed that there were a couple of people who ordered before we came in and still didn't get their drinks when we left. Despite my 3-star review, I'm still rooting for this place as I could see its potential and hope that it'll get better! My husband and I went into Brecotea at about 6:30 pm on a Wednesday and we did not get greeted. We stood around for about 10 minutes walked to the register and still no service and there were 3 servers available. I then spoke to them 3 times and no response, 4th time I said excuse me we have some questions if you don't mind. One of the servers walked off not to mention all of them were in deep conversation amongst themselves when walking in. As I proceed to ask a question nobody wanted to answer. So I ended up leaving and as I am leaving the server is staring me down and laughing to the other servers. Taste (3.5/5): Their style is definitely on the more milky side, which I'm really not a big fan of, but I'll try not to be too bias with the taste review. I got the Bubble Milk Tea, while my friends got the Signature Milk Tea and the Cherry Milk Cap Tea. Despite getting the Bubble Milk Tea with 25% sugar it was still very sweet (I think they mixed up my order with someone else's though). Also too much milk for my taste. It also tastes like VitaSoy, which was a pleasant surprise! The Signature Milk Tea was literally 80% Milk, 20% Tea, with absolutely no taste of the tea itself - but some might prefer it that way. The Cherry Milk Cap Tea has a good cherry to milk ratio, but I'm not a big cherry flavor fan.... The tapiocas have a unique taste to them - almost like brown sugar(?) - but I definitely love the taste and texture. Seems like it was made the same day as well. Wish they would've put more in each servings! Service (4/5): Waited ~10minutes because they messed up my drink. Also forgot our crepe cake until we ask them for it. Other than that, everyone were friendly, helpful, and trying their best! Was very lenient on this because they are still in the beginning stage of getting used to the service operations while training employees. I love this place! I've moved to Richmond during a pandemic so exploring food has been via UberEats. First, I love how late they're open! I spend a lot of my evenings up late working on school and I've been able to order from here as late as 9:30. Food is always packed well, the teas come in plastic cups with cute heart-shaped plugs and if you get multiple, they put them in a tall bag to prevent spilling during delivery. For the food! I LOVE the crepe cakes. I've tried the matcha, strawberry, and mango. All have been deliciously light and refreshing and hit my sweet tooth perfectly. I've tried a handful of teas - strawberry milk cap is deliciously creamy with a hint of saltiness, the matcha is better than others I've had but the OKINAWA!!! GET IT IN THE LARGE! It is my favorite drink here. I've had it with and without boba and it's delicious. Tonight, I tried the kumquat green tea with herbal jelly and it hit the spot with just the right amount of bitterness from the green tea and sweetened right to my taste! Oh my gosh, I'm in love with this place. I went for their grand opening and I can say this store is so cute. It's located right next to Sushi King, so there's lots of parking spaces. It's a cozy area and the staffs were very friendly and helpful when recommending me their products. They offer a lot of various baked goods, including cakes and bread. I got the dirty matcha bread and a red bean pastry. We also ordered their four season green milk cap tea and golden oolong milk cap tea. The four season green milk cap tea was superb! It had such a fragrant taste and the milk cap had the right consistency and thickness. It was so savory and mixed with the tea, it blew me away. I've been to multiple bubble tea/tea places that offers milk caps here in the Glen Allen/Richmond area, but none of them can compare to this place. When trying their baked goods, the dirty matcha bread was so soft and puffy. The cream on top was not too sweet at all, it's light and delicate. Came for the crepe cakes but also ordered a bubble tea. Everything was delicious. My mom really enjoyed the red bean milk tea. I took slices of the original, chocolate and green tea crepe cakes to a small dinner party with friends and they were a hit. The green tea was my favorite, followed in close second by the original flavor (which is like a vanilla). The cakes is light and just the right amount of sweetness. The matcha in the green tea crepe cake is also just the right amount. Sometimes matcha can be overpowering in flavor but this was perfect. Highly recommended.
