My first time in this famous place was yesterday. I was immediately impressed with how cozy the dining area was; not tiny and not huge. Just cozy. As I sat down & thought about ordering a soda, I looked and saw a sign that said, "CASH ONLY." Epic failure for me. I just didn't know and never could have expected that. I am sure that I wasn't the only customer in the history of the place to awkwardly have a soda waiting for me on my table when I had to tell the staff member that I had to leave. Post-pandemic, I'm seriously not sure how any place in the world does the cash-only thing & survives. I don't suspect that I'll be back soon as a I don't live in Brooklyn. Bummer. read more

I first went to Brennan & Carr 50 years ago when I was 11 with my parents. Over the decades I have consistently paid visits and enjoyed the consistent food over the years ...delicious roast beef sandwiches and all the side trimmings. I haven't been there in a while so I took a ride over with my wife to sit down for dinner and I'm sad to say it is not the same. The roast beef sandwich used to be delicious and this one was nothing special... and a lot less meat then they used to put on there. they used to have a nice cheese sauce but today somehow it was a slice of processed American cheese, no biggie. Side of vegetables, (string beans and carrots) were awful. Not fresh, reminds me of frozen veggies you forgot about in the back of the freezer from last year! Shame, I got the feeling they faced a financial crunch but instead of raising the prices again they decided to cut back on how they serve the food. You don't notice much if you love the french fries or chicken fingers which were OK but this place is all about roast beef sandwiches and it's just not the same. Even the bread is not as it was. Roll & Roaster, also in Sheepshead Bay at this point is a much better choice in my humble opinion. read more

I love old school places like this and there's a reason why they've lasted so long. The sandwich is just ok until you dip it into that unbelievable aujus or get the entire sandwich dipped as I did.!!!!! Love me some Brennan and Carr! The staff are all quick and friendly, making everyone feel like they're regulars even if they're not. Food comes out fast, hot, and perfectly cooked. My husband loves the Garguilos Burger and I stick to the roast beef and cheese dipped ( which is always dipped, somehow, a perfect amount) We just visited there yesterday and my daughter chowed down on their fries and tenders. A late pick up snack for this try of their famous roast beef sandwich and Gargiulo burger. Walked in what looks like a open counter with man taking orders over the phone not paying attention to any one had walked in. I looked around for assistance to where I should go. A man looked at me a couple of times than ask me if I wanted to dine in. I said yes and ask me to go in. We got seated and given paper menu. Our waiter quickly with no effort any conversation asked us do u guys know what u going to order? We said yes. I asked a few questions and he answered back with knowledge. He took our order. Our root beer and water came in a wax cup. We ordered the roast beef sandwich without cheese. It was good but the bread got really soggy. The bread did not hold up meat as it fell apart. I really di7slike a soggy messy sandwich. Matter of opinion as while. If so they shouldn't dip their sandwich. I agreed with one of the reviews that the sandwich was just put together with Kaiser bread. Nothing special. They failed on the quality in the bread as it did not hold up those flavorful good quality roast beef!! What's a good sandwich without good bread? Brennan and Carr! The Gargiulo burger on the hand was good and juicy. This aromatic taste combinations presented it's uniqueness and flavor that I cannot put into words. Go try it. Great decor but failed to match the type and quality of food and services they presented. It's like we walking into a wannabes Peter Lugar SteakHouse. Imagine walking into Peter Lugar serving roast beef sandwich for $7.95? All goes downhill. Overall, not much service and our waiter worked and operated like a robot. Very disappointing! Their famous roast beef was not fresh, too well done, and had zero roast beef flavor. The au jus was tasteless as well. Fries were barely just ok. We ordered a slice of each of their pies. All of it was a take out order. All of it went in the trash. We had been looking forward to trying this place. We will not be going back. The only upside was a nice conversation we had with a man who was also waiting for his order. Ended up here on a random jaunt into the heart of the Bk. This place is not fancy, service is not ok to terrible, and you'll be transported to the 70's when you walk into this place. It's old, dank, and maybe even a little dirty. They have cheap beer, and a roast beef sandwich with onions and cheese that is dipped au jus and comes to you sopping with the juice. Obviously you can't eat it with your hands but it's good. You can't get food like this anywhere else and all of it adds to the novelty of this place. The roast beef is very good. They obviously take the time and care to make sure that the roast beef is done right. It's a dinosaur of a place remnant of old, dangerous, dirty NYC that is quickly disappearing. Not gonna lie, I mainly go here for the roast beef sandwich and with double dipping into the broth. I did had the fries and calamaris at one point, which was great by the way! When I dine there, eating that sandwich is something you would have to eat with a fork and knife. It sounds crazy but with the double dip of the broth, it can be a real mess to eat as a finger food. I did what the restaurant name told me, and I drove here in my Carr. All the way from Buffalo, NY no less. If I had driven to Brooklyn just for this sandwich, I'd have been gravely disappointed. It's not dirt cheap, but tastes like it. The famous Beef sandwiches up in Buffalo, such as Charlie The Butcher's, not to mention the incredible Nick's Old Roast Beef in Philly, are infinitely better. So was "This Little Piggy" of Manhattan, which is now gone. So is Chaps in Baltimore. I'm not sure how this compares to Roll-Roaster (or whatever it is called) nearby, and maybe it's slightly better than Arby's, but all three are definitely overrated. The service wasn't too great either, and I think this is one of those places (like the "first ever" burger spot in New Haven, CT) which is carried by its long history, rather than the genuine comparative quality of the sandwich. Nevertheless I support any family business so they get a healthy average 3 from me, and if you love roast beef, try it for yourself and see if you think I am wrong. Great beef, but I'm not a fan of that dip. I guess the way the sandwiches are meant to be served here is with onions and a dip in the au jus sauce. But the soft roll with that dip and the juicy roast beef puts it one step away from being the same as getting the sandwich made in a blender. Pretty mushy stuff. You have failed if you come here and don't get the Gargiulo Burger ($6.45) or the Roast Beef Sandwich ($5.50). As previously mentioned, these taste almost the same since they're both kind of just a mass of super soft meat and mushy bread. The burger is better since it consists of the roast beef along with a beef patty, as well as some melted cheese and onions. If that's a little much for you, then just stick with the Roast Beef Sandwich on its own. Also, I would recommend to NOT get the dip even though everyone on Yelp would unwisely steer you in the other direction the same way I fell for it. If you don't mind that mess though and you like a disintegrated bun, then go for it. This is a great, cheap place for some tasty little sandwiches. Definitely a good place to try at least once. It's a Brooklyn institution that has been around close to 80 years. I first saw this place featured on Man v Food a couple of years ago but I thought this place was just OK. There's a take out window which is very convenient. Order up at the window, get your order, and your back on the street. Good service with a smile. What a pain to get here via public transportation...but definitely worth it! Inside there are more tables than I expected, the menu is pretty simple and the waiters were kind enough to explain how the meals come prepared and how to order. I chose to go with a single dipped roast beef with cheese fries. There was an option to have a cheeseburger with beef which sounded really good but I could never finish that much food. My bf ordered the platter which came with 2 sides for only like $13 and change. Service was super fast, there is a take out window so it's almost like fast food but with a seated area. The onion rings were ok, cheese fries were good (cheese wiz style) but served like room temperature which was disappointing. However, the sandwich was really good, dipping sauce was salty and bread was soaked until completed soggy. I would definitely go back but with a car. It was a good 20 min walk from the Q train (not ideal in 93 degree weather). A hot spot among locals surprisingly it wasn't very crowded granted we went before the dinner crowds.
