We were skiing at Taos and decided to drive over for a nice dinner. We had oysters Rockefeller that were very good as the appetizer. My husband and I had the seafood platter for two. We definitely had enough food for 4. The appetizer that came with that meal was the sautéed mushrooms. Hands downs best mushrooms I have eaten out! If you only get one appetizer and like mushrooms, get this. The king crab legs were perfect, lobster was a little tough but good. The shrimp was tasty as well. It had a side of rice pilaf and veggies very good! Two of our boys had the chicken fried steak, but after trying everyone else's dinner they decided there were better choices on the menu. The Panko fried chicken was a hit with our table. Our youngest son had the chicken strips fries and hot chocolate, he enjoyed his very much. They were very busy, we had called ahead and told them when we planned to arrive, however a large group came in between the time we called and time we arrived. This made us end up waiting an hour and half for a table, not including the hour drive to get there. They told us they did not take reservations, so we knew that it was a possibility, but we were reassured it was a slow night. One of the few restaurants that were open for take out during COVID-19. Their updated menus were not available anywhere online so an employee texted me the menu, which was very nice and convenient. With the holidays being around the corner, they were super busy and backed up on orders; however, I was still able to get my food in an adequate amount. A nice place to go for a steak or some seafood in Red River. We went for Christmas Eve dinner and had both. All the entrees come with a lot of sides and an extras, so the portions are great. The food is really good to be nestled in such a small town and the service is excellent. They could work on the ambience a little. We have been to Brett's many times. It never disappoints. Brought our family of 5 on a very busy Oktoberfest weekend. Food is amazing! Lobster tail was huge and full of flavor. Chicken fried steak overflowed off the plate. Surprising favorite was the Panko chicken with green chili gravy. Chicken was crispy on the outside and so tender on the inside. Wish I had the recipe for the green chili gravy. Great place to bring your family. We will definitely be back! read more

Christy and I were here on a slow Monday and at 8:00 on top of that and our food was awesome. I ordered ribeye medium well and it came absolutely to perfection. You know these chefs. They get all pissy when you order a steak MW or W. Not here. Charred just as it is supposed to be with moisture on the center. Perfecto!!! Christy had chicken fried steak and said no gristles!! How many chicken fries can say that. I wish I could give a 4.5 because of the dated ambiance. Man this place needs an update. But there again, most of Red River needs an update!! read more

Had the chicken fried steak. In the top 3 I've ever had. Steak was tender & thin. No chewy gristle or fatty parts. Breading was a little thick but tasty. Just the right amount of gravy (Goldilocks - not too much and not too little - just right). And it complimented rather than tried to outshine the steak. Mashed potatoes were great compliment (be a little bigger serving would be nice). The veg medley was cooked tender (corn & zucchini with some green chilis). Service was fine (we were the only family in the place as it was later dinner time). Server forgot wife's wine order, otherwise a great place to dine. We sat at an open patio table for 20 minutes before anyone even brought a menu. Then another 10 before we decided to leave. Ordered pickup after that. Told me 45 minutes. Waited 75 minutes (no text or call that it was ready) then decided to go see if it was ready. It was but they forgot a salad. Food here is great!! They just don't have the staff they use to. We've made it a point to dine at Brett's on our last several trips to RR and this time we ate there TWICE. The food is delicious, fresh, and well-presented. It's usually busy in the evening so be sure to make a reservation. My hubby always gets the chicken fried steak (I tasted and it's amazing) and he enjoyed the bacon wrapped meatloaf as well. I branched out from ordering the trout and tried the fried oysters. Best ones I've ever eaten, hands down. Oysters were fresh and juicy, and the batter was perfectly crunchy. It was delicious; we all enjoyed our food: chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, trout, and Navajo taco. The chicken and steak were pounded thinner than you might encounter normally but I was almost too full when done with my chicken so can't say it mattered! Was a huge piece of both chicken and beef. This is hands down the best place to eat dinner in Red River, New Mexico. I was taking a spring break vacation with my boyfriend, who is family friends with the owner of Brett's Bistro (brett). So, logically we stopped by. Food is absolutely mouthwatering, we both got the trout special. We also tried a wine and their wine selection is definitely great if you are a wine-o. Even the non-drinker bf liked the wine. I was stuffed when we were done and can't wait to visit again soon so I can have the trout again. Will be back someday. read more

The best restaurant in Red River, no question. This is gourmet dining you will not find anywhere else unless you're willing to make the drive to Taos. That said, quality comes at a price. Be forewarned. Also, this is a small place so be ready to wait if it's a busy time. The beef here is top quality and cooked perfectly. If you like cracklings, get the cracklings appetizer, at $5 a large basket of freshly fried cracklings and rinds. Other things we tried and liked, chicken fried steak and for lunch the burgers. This place is fairly new and the staff are still working out their groove, give em a smile and figure what it takes to bring in good employees in this town. We have eaten here many times over the past several years. Time to review at long last: No one in town (in NEW Mexico even!) makes better fries than Brett's bistro. Their hand cut , perfectly fried fries are presented in a big heaping mound of goodness. Pair it with their amazing green chili cheeseburger and it's a homerun. I just left my first visit to Brett's and am happy to finally find a nicely decorated place to dine that has an upscale lunch menu - beyond just burgers and pizza. The halibut special and the trout looked good. I went for the catfish with pilaf and asparagus. I was not disappointed. It's a bit more expensive than other lunch spots in RR, but it is worth it. I had the prime rib medium rate and it was excellent. I did not care for the soup or the potatoes. They were good just not what I expected. The kitchen staff does not wear masks or gloves at any time. The hostess took our order while wearing a mask and asked us to wait outside. From where we were waiting, we could see the kitchen staff, none of whom were wearing masks or gloves. One of them messed with his hair and then went back to touching the food. So gross and irresponsible during a pandemic. The food is not worth the risk, these people obviously do not care about their customers. read more

This is without a doubt, THE best place to eat in Red River. Bar none. I'm not sure there is anything that isn't fabulous!! We have eaten here for years and it just keeps getting better. The chicken fried steak is wonderful. It's crispy, tender, and juicy. Perfect!! But the Panko-crusted chicken with green chili sauce is absolutely to die for. I thought this place was ok. The location was just at the bottom of our hotel so we decided to eat here when we realized it was a place we didn't have to brave the cold to get to. The specials and the whole menu sounded appetizing. I got the cornmeal crusted trout, which was on the salty side. The crust was crunchy but also kind of heavy for my taste. The fish was served with toasted veg, which were not memorable, but seemed fresh. A side salad was also served before the main course with a wonderful dressing made in house- prob the best part of the whole meal. Crusty bread with butter was also served and it was good. The part of the meal i did not like was the rice pilaf- and i like just about everything. I dont think the pilaf usually tastes this way and that i had a bad batch- pilaf is pretty hard to not like. It had a chemical taste to it that turned me off. The service was fine and there was a small selection of wine, however the menu could use more local brews. Really think this place has potential - it must have been an off night, as the other really great reviews really drew our attention this way. Better luck next time we are in town. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this little bistro, nestled within a hotel. I discovered it while exploring a neighboring gift shop, and am glad we stopped by! The food was more delicious than anticipated, and the portions were surprisingly adequate for what would be expected in a tourist town. The staff seemed faintly aloof, but did not seem rude. Went today while on vacation with the family and the food was great! I got the chicken fried steak with veggies and potatoes and it was perfect. My daughter got a burger and fries and that was also very good. My youngest got the soup if the day, posole, and it was excellent.
