We were unpleasantly shocked at the prices - $11 for a SANDWICH? We are not in NYC! Then we tried to order a kid's sandwich for my son who was at a basketball tournament and the owner almost didn't let us order a kid's size ($6.50 for a basic ham & cheese on white bread nothing else) because she said people were "abusing" this. What the heck? Isn't it less food therefore shouldn't it cost less. Random place, weird rules posted everywhere. My husband ordered a wrap under "Breakfast specialties" and it was just meat, potatoes and cheese - no egg. What the heck? $44 for 4 sandwiches & 4 drinks. Way too expensive for what we got. The breakfast and sandwiches here are delicious. I think the price is a bit high for the size of the meal though ($8-9 for a smallish sandwich). On our last trip here the coffee was horrible - very badly watered down. It tasted like the prior day's coffee. But I think that may have been a one-time thing. Other than that, the place gets crowded fast because it is small, the tables are very small and the chairs could be more comfortable. read more

Not good a good experience. They say they're open until 4pm but when we went there at 10 minutes before 4, they refused to serve us. Said their menu was "limited" because of the time and when I asked what exactly "limited" meant, the reply was that they were serving coffee drinks only. Just once id like to get a grilled bagel with butter nyc style even after asking server and explaining how id like it done. Its never right. I've spoken to owener who keeps telling it wont happen again that back of house staff have been shown how to grill bread. But nothing changes. Just because they use all the right buzz words doesn't not mean they know what there doing. They plate well and that what allows them to get away with stuff. Don't take my word next time just ask order takers to explain dish. I go in for the espresso, but each time I wonder why I give them my business. The staff is often not friendly or very distracted talking to others while waiting on me.and thus getting my order wrong. Since I typically just order a medium Americano coffee, how tough is it to get right? Last week I went in on a Saturday around 10am and asked to buy a dozen bagels. Even though the large display case of bagels was full, I was told the owner doesn't let them sell a dozen to one customer unless they've been pre-ordered. Really? I was dumbfounded. Finally the girl at the register asked someone in the kitchen and I was told they would sell me a dozen bagels. I felt like they were doing me a big favor letting me buy 12 bagels. read more

Save your money, save your time and stress. The quality of the food 80% of the time is up to standard, but that's assuming you get the correct order which is a 50% chance at best. Given their prices are well above most places on Main Street for breakfast and lunch, you would expect at a minimum your order is executed correctly. And if it's not done right, don't expect anything but a bare bones effort to fix it and get you back on your way; making you a new one seems out of the question for them. Just not what I expect for a $9 basic breakfast sandwich. This morning my bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel was missing cheese and the bagel was definitely a day or more old and hardly toasted as ordered. Their breakfast sandwiches are really good and the bagels are always fresh. The atmosphere is chill and on occasions they have live music. The coffee although priced cheap isn't so good next time I'll try something different or ask what they would recommend. Went for breakfast because it was convenient to our hotel, but in hindsight, we should've been pickier. It's alright, but nothing special and fairly overpriced for what you do get. The idea of the omelet sandwich seemed good, but the execution is problematic... a bagel couldn't handle being the vehicle for the omelet and I can't even imagine if I'd taken the English muffin. Went to Brew Bakers for my first time after living in Middletown for over a year. Ordered an egg sandwich, cappuccino and a steamer. The cashier seemed confused and took a bit imputing our order. We sat down and was delivered the sandwich first. I looked to the counter to see where our drinks were and saw a cappuccino sitting on the counter. A few minutes later that same cappuccino was delivered to our table. I took a bite of the sandwich and was instantly disappointed. The eggs were folded on one another and over cooked. My steamer was delivered and was tasteless. We left more than half the sandwich and wanted to get our tasteless drinks to go. After waiting at the counter for a couple of minutes with no service, we left our drinks. Overall Brew Bakers is an overpriced bagel shop. Don't waste your time. read more

This place has some pretty good coffee drinks/lattes and a nice selection of sandwiches (breakfast and lunch). One morning I had a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on their cheddar cheese bagel. It was delicious. The bagel was great. They have quite a few yummy ones to choose from. I want to try them but I always get interested in trying something else instead. I was there for lunch the other day and got a Parisian from their sandwich menu. It was turkey, ham, brie, sliced apples, and honey mustard on toasted multigrain. It was good. It was hard to choose because they have quite a few interesting and delicious sounding ones. I also got a "Berry White" latte. The latte was a little on the sweet side for me, but I usually drink mine with 3 extra shots and sugar free syrup. It was good nonetheless. They also offer great sounding soups (they had pumpkin soup on the list when I was there last) and salads. read more

Came in on my lunch break the other day. I've only been here once before, and that was a good 3 years ago. I asked if they had paper menus besides the one on the far back wall, because I'm semi-blind and forgot my glasses. They didn't, so the very nice young woman behind the counter offered to help answer any questions and threw out a couple of her suggestions. She suggested the lunch special, which was a tiny cup of soup and half of a sandwich. She was very pleasant and even offered a spoonful of the soup to see if I liked it before I bought it. It was overall a nice experience, and I love the atmosphere inside. My only complaint would be that I wish the portions were much bigger for the price that you pay. i really wanted to like this place, because it's so close to where i work, but... i have been there on more than once and have found the service lacking each time. pretentious and unfriendly. a bag of (small) potato chips is over $2.00. overpriced in all aspects. i asked them to substitute a plain wrap for the herb and garlic, which they have done for me before when i have ordered the chicken caesar wrap. the person told me this was okay and also offered me a wheat wrap, which i declined. when it arrived at my table, it was in the garlic and herb wrap. i thought this was an oversight so took it back to the counter and was told that they were out of plain wraps. it would have been nice if someone had informed me of this in advance,especially because i was very hungry. i've had less than savory experiences with them before, but now i'm officially done. and, for the record, the food isn't that great. read more

Called multiple places to try to find green bagels to bring to work for St. Patty's Day. Was thrilled to find that this place had them! Couldn't believe that when I got there, they refused to sell me a dozen bagels because apparently that's all they had and they wanted to save them for other people! I called and asked if we quickly go in for a cup of coffee to go and the owner was grateful with the request. She was more than accommodating and the coffee was spectacular. Saw something beyond disturbing at Brew Bakers...an employee was clearing a table, took garbage back behind the counter to dispose of it. A woman there took the USED coffee stirrers from her. They were placed in a staff handwashing sink then rinsed, dried and returned to the container for PUBLIC use. Now I am all for recycling but this is too much. It's a health hazard. I inquired of a staff member who the woman was and was aghast to learn she was the co-owner of the establishment...Eloise! Ownership disregarded common sense health and safety regulations to save less than a penny. The flu is everywhere. Needless to say I won't be returning there and if I could I'd give them a negative rating. read more

it's such a cute and comfortable environment. the food and drinks are great! Service has always been good for me. It's a great place to either come to study, or just hang out with friends. The only down side is parking. I personally hate parking on main street. read more

I always attempt to use local businesses instead of using a corporate chain, which is what brought me into this restaurant this morning while visiting Middletown. Wrong choice. Upon entering, there was not an employee standing at the front register so I walked around the counter to encounter Lauren. I asked if I could have the key to the restroom. Lauren stated that the restroom was for paying customers only. Is said that I am a paying customer. You would think someone holding at travel coffee mug in their hands would be there to refill the coffee mug but Lauren's response was "Oh, so you've already paid?" I said,"No, I was going to wash my hands." One would think she would have a offered to ring me up but I guess I was supposed to stand and wait at the counter so Lauren could finish the side conversation she was having. I started to walk out when Lauren continued to make comments towards me. On my way out she said,"have the kind of day your are supposed to have." I am not sure what this means. Was she insinuating that because I am a openly gay man that I was to have a certain "kind" of day? I gave her the finger and walked out. As I thought about what this comment meant, I returned to ask for the key as I still needed to use the bathroom and purchase breakfast. Lauren's response was that I was not getting anything from here. I left the store and called from the car to speak to the manager. The person that answered the phone said she was the manager. I asked her name and she said it was Lauren. I told her that I was the person she just dealt with and would like to talk to her boss. She said she was the boss and no one else was available and started to run her mouth again. If that is the behavior of the restaurant management, I would stay far away from this place. read more

As a Middletown native, Well...... I used to like this place due to the atmosphere although the seating is a little uncomfortable and the prices are way too high. I used to meet people here for business, have some coffee (which is a bit watered down) sandwiches etc; So yesterday I went there to meet someone for a quick business chat grab some tea and maybe a sandwich or something. When I got there it was pretty packed (probably due to the Wesleyan graduation approaching) so I meet my client, sat down took my computer out and was thinking about what I wanted to order. As I was talking with my client one of the wait staff came up to us (obviously very embarrassed about what he was about to say) and said that his boss told him that if we weren't going to order anything we couldn't stay there and chat because they needed tables. I said "I completely understand but we are going to order something, and that I had just gotten there." He said okay and walked away. So a few seconds longer into our conversation, I was waiting for the line to get a little smaller at the register....... so i tried getting online to show my client something but I wasn't able to log onto the wireless connection as i had been able to in the past so when the same wait staff came over again, I asked him for their password, he tried remembering it and gave it to me but then said he was going to double check and see if that was the correct one. He came back and said (embarrassed again) he said, "I really hate to do this but my boss said that if you come up and order something, we can give you the password." What????? I was floored and pissed off at this point. My client and I decided to leave because this was terrible, I had never experienced anything like this type of service before. It was blatantly rude and they didn't even give me the chance to order, I kid you not this whole process took about 2minutes from the time I walked in and sat down, it was amazing that the owner who kept relaying the message didn't have the courtesy to come over to our table herself and tell us to order or leave she had to send someone else to do it. So yesterday they lost two customers and the sad thing is that I come there often and it wasn't even recognized and the other sad thing is that they were typically only busy because of Wesleyan graduation. They really should get some polishing on customer service because I will never go back there again and I certainly won't recommend anyone else go there because the whole situation was completely uncalled for. Cruising Main St in Middletown, CT. as it was voted the Most Romantic Street in the nation by The National Trust for Historic Preservation. Artful Main St. brimming with elegant restaurants, the romantic Inn at Middletown, an award winning chocolatier offering the Best of New England charm. Well that's their opinion. So I go into Brew Bakers and there is a half way decent crowd, so I think gotta be good. I order up the turkey sandwich which comes with a pickle, wow. The girl at the register gives me my number, it's a little metal plate. An employee walks by and grabs the number. Never been there before so I think that's the way it's done. So I sit, seat yourself restaurant, and I am waiting, I see somebody delivering food and tell her the above about the number. No problem she says. So I am watching this dude deliver food to the tables and I especially liked the part where he would run his hand through his long hair then stick his filthy disgusting hand into the food basket and put your food on the table. No gloves, no hair net, no nothing. I left. Nuff said. Will contact the health department. read more
