Friendly service & excellent food at a very reasonable price. Broad Axe is in downtown Hagerstown MD and has street parking. It is a bar & restaurant and has live music a few nights a week. I ordered the fish & chips, which is a large serving of fresh breaded catfish with boardwalk fries. You can order whatever dips you want with it. You can order bottled soda to go. Great atmosphere cool lighting and I love all the brick inside. My husband and I stopped here for dinner, no drinks. Wings were a 10 out of 10, perfect, crispy and lots of meat on the bone. We shared an alligator gumbo, it was amazing and so unique. Finished up with peanut butter pie and it could not have been better!! It was a great experience and we will return. read more

We had a really nice time here. A real down home vibe, full of regulars; 70's rock music, a multi-cultural collection of TV stations, friendly knowledgeable staff. Scruffy but warm. The beer was very good, food too. We had a Reuben, very full of meat and rich with dressing and cheese. Hamburger was cooked as I asked and there are a ton of choices. Having to come to Hagerstown regularly for work, this is my new top favorite spot while I am in town! Came here with some local work friends a couple of months ago. I ordered the cat fish and chips. Being a fish-and-chips snob, I'm always skeptical but I do like to try different restaurants take on them. What I found interesting about the fish and chips here, was that they used catfish. Normally I'm used to seeing Cod or haddock. From the first bite, I was blown away! That is not an understatement. Their breading is phenomenal. Truly incredible and left me wanting more. Don't get me wrong, the fish was good, but the breading is really what was out of this world. The chips, always a long second from the fish, we're good. About a month later, when I came into town, I literally drove from the airport, to the hotel to drop off my stuff and check in and then immediately off to the Broad Axe. I had the fish and chips again. The next day, right back to the Broad Axe. But this time, something different. Chicken and Waffles. I asked our server if it was the same breading that they used on the catfish and he did confirm this. The chicken and waffles came to the table. From top to bottom, it was chicken, fries and a waffle. Not a Belgian waffle but more of a thinner waffle. Now, I noticed there was a gravy that came with this when I ordered it. I believe that's more for the fries than anything else but I asked to have that on the side. I never tried the gravy. I can't imagine the mixture of it with syrup, but some people may like it. The chicken and waffles were also amazing. I'm a huge fan of the sweet and savory combination of chicken and waffles and syrup. The syrup wasn't anything fancy or a high-end maple syrup. It was pretty standard syrup, but it did the job. I would absolutely get this dish again and recommend it to anyone. Would I go back? I can't wait to go back! I highly recommend this for anyone in the area. I should also note that it is a bar/restaurant. So whether you're out for drinks or you're out for a good meal, I think you'll find yourself leaving the Broad Axe happy. And, maybe a little bit tipsy. read more

We came here a little after noon on the 4th of July. We had searched for a place to get something to eat and were drawn to the name of this place. We parked on one of the side streets nearby and walked to the entrance. There is only street parking available as far as we could see. When we entered, we were very impressed. This building must have been built in the early 1900's or earlier. We absolutely love the interior with the exposed brick and wooden floor. We decided to order an appetizer of their Old Bay Kettle Chips from their Axe Snax. I was a little hesitant but went with it. The Old Bay seasoning was very mild and hardly noticeable. But the Kettle chips were very crunchy. For our entree's, my wife ordered the Shroom and Swiss burger and I chose the Western burger. Everything arrived in a timely fashion and looked good. We were both pleased with how tender the burgers were. I was amazed that the burger was actually medium well (just a little bit of pink). The service was very good as well. He checked on us regularly and he was attentive and friendly. Very cool place with great food and drinks and we would highly recommend if your in the area. read more

Took out my 17 year old sis in law to a nice little dinner she choose this place because of how nice it looked on the inside. I ordered the fried pork tenderloin and it came with kettle cooked chips (can substitute for fries for an up charge). Also had a a half of my bf's crab cake sandwich, so meaty and full of crab lumps. Ordered a drink of the special it was a cucumber tequila and cinnamon drink no pics due to being consumed. the waitress was a sweetheart and even brought out a little dessert to sing happy birthday! read more

Go here for beer and drinks as the soda is lacking for some reason. I have never owned or run a resturant so they are probably aware so if we ever come back, perhaps it will be fixed. Parking can get tricky. Service appeared to be low as we are still existing in a pandemic but it was like no one wanted to even be there sadly. :( Sometimes that's the way the cookies crumbles and why its so important to think every visitor is coming there for their first time. read more

This is a great local spot. It's in a not great area considering it's downtown, but don't let that fool you. Lots of rear parking and extended parking in a public lot. The food is outstanding. Also a great beer selection. Staff is super nice and quick. It can get busy on Friday and Saturday nights with families. They also have a nice fenced in outdoor patio for nice days. read more

My niece and I checked out the Broad Axe while visiting Hagerstown last weekend. We went Friday night and had such a great time we went back Saturday night. Friday was pretty packed. We arrived about midnight. I had the Hell or High Water Watermelon beer which was yummy. Lots of folks were ordering food and it was smelling good. Friday night we had the fried pickles which were delicious. It wasn't served with the basic ranch dressing. This was a homemade dressing that was very tasty. Saturday night we came back for the crab dip. Wow, it did not disappoint! Lump crab meat blended nicely with cheese and Old Bay laid on top of french bread. Good stuff! The crowd was friendly and most folks were tipsy, including me lol. I met a bartender who was off Friday night, but working when we came back Saturday. Janelle was so sweet and she remembered my name after only meeting me once. Great service! There was also a live band playing Saturday. Stop by and check them out. My daughter and our men came to town for a rather somber reason, but based on a relative's recommendation (And we hadn't seen our relatives for over 5 years), we decided to go to The Broad Axe the night before. Drinks were on point. Shrimp nachos were yummy. Me and my man shared a fresh and juicy Crispy Club Chicken.... And I still had a bite or two I couldn't finish it was so big. My daughter got the Portobello Sandwich and she loved it, and has decided she is going to add it to her own menu to make at home. Her man, got the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and ate every bite. We left to check out Trivia at Hub City Brewery, where our family members met up with us and then we decided to go back to the broad Axe to end up staying out hours later than we had planned. I was in town for work and found Broad Axe nearby our AirBNB. Walking in, the place has a great, casual atmosphere and nice selection of beer on tap. My group of 4 all ordered drinks and appetizers to start. The drinks took a few minutes to arrive, and our appetizers never came at all. When our main entrees arrived, we mentioned we had ordered appetizers too. Our waitress checked her computer and said there's no record of our appetizers, in a very rude way. We told her we'd rather just go without appetizers now that our meal had arrived. A little while later my coworker asked her for some waters as she walked by (we had never gotten water either) and she snapped at us that she was busy and would get water later. Our food was pretty good, no big complaints there. I understand the long wait due to staffing shortage, but the rude service and lack of apology about our appetizers just made for an uncomfortable evening. read more

Yes, they have food here but the vibe for this downtown Hagerstown location is "bar." Full bar of mixed drinks and a dozen and a half or so beers on tap. Me and two friends were here for a couple of drinks. Service was great and the beers were cold. Other than a rather loud hen party, the place was loud and comfortable. read more

First time here and not a horrible experience, but not a great one. It was definitely more of a bar feel not a pub feel. They have their regulars and the staff knows them, & that's cool. Just don't forget your other customers. They seemed to have been under staff for the day, but they stayed friendly and was trying to handle their own. Food took a bit long for what we ordered. The fried pickles were delicious. Fried crispy and the breading stayed on them. Giz ordered Phillycheese steak & it was basically cubed steak smothered in cheese. Not what a real Phillycheese steak is... The lettuce and tomato threw it off. Definitely make sure to order it without that. I ordered the Chorizo Burger. It was good, but I'm glad I added jalapeños to it. The burger itself didn't have any spice to it, that Mexican chorizo usually has. The slaw gave it a nice tangy crisp. The natural French fries were delicious as well. Might hit it back up, next time we cut through town. read more

Ate here on a saturday night and had terrible experience. The food took almost an hour to come to the table for 2 burgers, chicken tenders and a sandwich. My reuben was slightly warm, half of the sandwhich had one piece of corned beef folded in half, the other half had a good amount of beef. The fries were STONE cold so the server brought be fresh, UNDERCOOKED fries. My fiancé had the firehouse burger and it had a very small patty, more of a slider size than a burger. The server proceeded to argue with him over the size saying they are all weighed and made the same. The burger could not hold structure and crumbled upon consumption, not worth $12. The table beside us was severely overserved, there was a woman on crutches that could barely stand. During her exit, she stood at the door clenching on who I assume was a bar tender and continued to be handsy in front of the entire restaurant with him. We saw the same man behind the bar pouring himself drinks after the woman left. Clearly they don't care for the wellbeing of their customers and are more concerned with profits. read more

Decided to try this place out because of the reviews. We came in an were seated right away and the server came up to us quickly and told us about the specials and took our drink order. We ordered the fried pickles as an appetizer and they we amazing, A+ , I have had fried pickles in a lot of restaurants and so and these were by far the best! On the menu they put cajun seasoning in the batter but I don't do spicy. We ordered the chicken tenders which were crispy but bland, they would have been better with rosemary and thyme. We also ordered garlic parmesan chicken wings and they were excellent! Also ordered boardwalk fries crispy and I sent them back because they didn't come out crispy at all. So that's why they received 4stars. I'll come back just for the pickles! The inside is decorated with Maryland decor. read more
