When I'm in town around lunchtime, this is the place I seek. Really perfect brisket. Smoky, juicy, and tender. The bun is grilled, not toasted, just a little to complement the meat's smokiness. Look at that potato salad! You can see a small amount of skin indicating that they use the better and more expensive red potato. Flecks of cracked black pepper in it! Not too much mayo. There is no standard for good bbq in Southern Colorado. I don't know why I still try these places. This place is clean and covered in store bought country clichés. Tall booths on the sides of the place create a nice semi private dinning experience. Though the whole time we were eating the person who took our order was listening in on our dinning experience, there was no one else to take an order from. I tried the pulled pork one of their two top sellers. It wasn't horrible. I actually preferred their mustard bbq sauce, not my norm go to sauce. The chicken my wife had was a disgusting color. Part of the breast meat tasted a bit under cooked. Neither of our orders were what I would expect temperature wise (a little on the cold side). UGH!!!! Ever time we head to eat at the Monument location they are closed! They close at 7 pm and it seems we are heading out to eat at 7. As for the food, it's a good BBQ! The brisket and pork are very moist and flavor packed. Turkey is YUMMY. The potato salad has great flavor, lots of potatoes and not floating in mayo. The beans have great flavor, too. Okra is pretty typical. The selection of sauces are best around and the flavors are WONDERFUL!! They cater and are generous with the amounts. Something that doesn't affect the food but the atmosphere and that is the very dirty window. Just makes for a poor first impression. read more

I was told by a long time resident it would be hard to find good barbecue in Colorado. I need to introduce them to Broken Bones. This small restaurant tucked into the corner of a nondescript strip mall was a find. I ordered the two meat basket with pulled pork and two pork ribs. The ribs were cut with precision and tender. The pulled pork was juicy. My only complaint is that they have you add the sauce from a selection of four at your table. All the sauces were flavorful, and most people may enjoy doing it that way. I would, however, prefer to have my meat cooked with the sauce because it would add more flavor throughout. The restaurant offers only one dessert, apple cobbler, which I didn't order. Seating is very limited so coming at non-peak hours would be advised if you'd like to dine in. Nothing fancy at Broken Bones, and the prices are reasonable, and the counter order service was friendly. Just good ole barbecue. read more

Driving is always more enjoyable when you can find a good place for lunch! On my way from Denver to Colorado Springs and dying of hunger I get off for gas and food and judging for the exit I think the food option is going to be poor. Thank goodness for YELP yet again. I find this little BBQ place in a strip mall a couple of blocks from the gas station. The menu had a nice selection of meats and sandwiches and I went with a little of both. I got the Beef sandwich and a sausage with coleslaw. Meat was great, nice smoke, good flavor and a nice bun. The sausage was really tasty and the coleslaw was great. All the meat tasted the same ! Soaked or injected with some sort of Cajun flavoring that was super SALTY and pretty sure had a lot of MSG . Yuck . Also a " trick" to make it weigh more. BOO! We used their services for my daughter's graduation celebration. The food was really great! Everything was ready when we went to pick it up. They provided more than enough eating utensils (plates, forks, spoons, knives, napkins) and sauces and delicious dinner rolls. I would recommend them to others. Love Broken Bones, their sauces are great the pulled pork is always tender with a great smoke flavor and the jalapeño cole slaw is legit the bomb. You also cannot go wrong with the ribs and for sure get the pinion rings and since you are splurging get one of the cobblers. read more

We had a 30+ person graduation party, and had Broken Bones cater the dinner. What a Home Run! Huge trays of brisket, pulled pork, BBQ beans and their famous Mac N Cheese, along with the rolls to make sandwiches. They included lots of BBQ sauce, with 3 varieties. Randy and Ryan were our points of contract as we arranged for the catering. Both were very helpful and insured we ordered the correct amount. Best barbecue this side of the Springs so far. I love their pulled pork and brisket. I'm not sure why there are so many bad reviews, but my last trip to pick stuff up kind of threw me off. Some of the Mac and cheese wasn't fully melted, and the meat seemed to be from the last bit of their barbecue for the day. I picked up a rack of ribs to bring home on our way back to the Springs from Denver. They were so delicious. There was a really nice crust on the ribs and they were so tender and flavorful. My husband wasn't home so a week later J wanted him to try them. I picked them up this evening. They were flavorful but really tough and definitely didn't have the great crust. So disappointed! Guess I will stick with Famous Dave's. Nothing special but at least they are consistent. read more

Tried this place several times because it's close to home. Location is easy to access with good parking. So far as the food goes, we are not impressed. Let me preface this by saying I am from a place whose name and restaurants' names are nationally-recognized as a standard for BBQ. These guys appear to be operating on limited capital. My gut is stuff is getting pushed out. Side dish containers usually are not full. Meats have been inconsistent in terms of flavor and texture. Beans and slaw are just weird sometimes. The search for *the* BBQ joint in Colorado Springs continues. Had high hopes for this place and even higher hopes since Monument could use a few go-to spots. Tucked away in the inside corner of a strip mall, it's easy to miss, but once you walk in it definitely has the feel and decor of a BBQ joint. And it's very clean, which is always a plus. This place actually had burnt ends, which you don't always see so you know I had to try them. I was also recommended to try the ribs, so I did. Scooped up a side of slaw and potato salad and I was excited to dive into, well, great BBQ in the springs! Finally! Right? Except it wasn't. The flavors on both meats were good, initially, but faded quickly. Like the smoke and spices didn't have enough time to penetrate the meats. The burnt ends were tiny little cubes, much smaller than proper BBQ joints will sling your way, and the ribs were much more bone than meat. At least I had those sides to look forward to, right? Man. Both underwhelming and both lacked any real seasoning. I'd been told many times before that their slaw was 'delicious and just, different'. I tasted dill and cayenne and maybe a little more mayonnaise than usual, but otherwise no different and certainly not for the better. They got a lot of the basics right, but they need more seasoning in their side dishes, and much more TLC in their meats. read more

I always prefer to do business with locally owned places. This is a neighborhood joint tucked back in a shopping center. If you didn't already know it was there, you'd miss it. The menu board gives you a choice of a junior or a regular. I wanted the smoked sausage, and asked the difference between the junior and the regular. The girl said the small has 2 sausage links and the large has three. I went with the large. Sadly the large was barely enough to even call a sandwich. 3 links, each about 2 inches long. Did I mention they were 1/2 links? Yep, sliced in half lengthwise. So, in essence, I ended up with one and a half links total. I ordered the basket, which included a drink, and the side. I chose the fries, as my side. They came out barely cooked. I ordered the spicy sausage and the flavor was good, just not great. Bottom line, is the food was acceptable, nothing to write home about. If Rudy's were any closer, I'd go there over here in a heartbeat. The food is simply overpriced for what they serve. The portions are incredibly small for the money. If they increase the portions, or lowered the prices in proportion to the serving size, I'd give it higher ratings. read more

This was such a nice alternative for highway fare and it felt good passing up the McDonald's to get here. I thought about going to Bird Dog's but my lead foot carried me miles away by the time I made a decision. Thankfully the Yelp app came through for me and this place was open for lunch. They have a great $5.95 special that comes with one side. I opted for the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and a root beer. I really like how they have a smart iPad program for credit cards that show you options for tipping. It takes all the thinking out of tipping and saves time. Big points for that guys! The pulled pork sandwich was exactly the right portion for lunch. I piled on the coleslaw, threw away the top bunch and armed myself with a tower of napkins. I love the seasonings they put in their coleslaw recipe so much. It had a nice kick and the combination of the pulled pork and bbq sauce didn't need any sauce. I especially appreciate the gluten free markers and the homemade sauces they offer which are also gluten free. It's nice to see more options for people with food allergies. read more

Colorado Springs is a dead town for foodies and as a New Yorker in exile, I suffer greatly. My expectations are generally low from continually being disappointed. Having said that, Broken Bones is a great locally owned BBQ spot in a sea of franchises. Congratulations to them on their expansion, in effect doubling their space, a clear sign of doing well. 2 meat plate with cole slaw is my favorite. I have to agree with the other Yelpers in terms of inconsistency and fairly high prices. The BBQ is decent on most days and great once in a while. Everything was originally cooked great. Solid smoke rings, some of the bites were tender/moist and not saturated with sauce covering something up. We came in around noon and most of our meats were a bit dry and seemed to have been prepared some time ago. I won't speculate exactly when though. That being said, I know the Pitmaster knows what he is doing and if you can get the meat straight out of the smoker, you won't be disappointed. The sides are pretty good and the fries were delicious. We will be back as we love BBQ and hope to bump up the review a star or two. read more

I don't know why people I talked to didn't like this place. I was pleasantly surprised that they have burnt ends-that to me is how you know a BBQ place really can do BBQ. The location is less than ideal but the inside is cool, spacious, and clean. Another feature that added points in my book was the different options of BBQ sauce. They have about 6 and they range from hot, smokey, sweet and a mustard base. The overall price of any BBQ is pretty high to me but so are meat prices and if I don't have to smoke a brisket, pork, or ribs-then I'm not going to. I ordered a 2 meat combo and was hoping for 2 sides but it only came with 1 and a piece of Texas toast. What made up for the lack of 2 sides is that I feel I got a great portion size. I ordered sliced brisket and pulled pork( was gonna make a few sandwiches and it made 3), baked beans as my side. The brisket was thick sliced, moist and had a touch of fat (which I like). The pulled pork was good as well but I preferred the brisket. The baked beans had great flavor and had pieces of meat, onions and peppers. I thought I made a good selection as the amount was more than adequate and the price was about 11 dollars. They also have cup cakes that a local baker brings in I believe. I would definitely go back because the smoked turkey and sausage are my next option. Hope this helps! read more

If you are here on a good day, then you'll get some decent bbq. If you are here on a their off day, then you probably won't come back. I've been here twice and so far I'm 1-1. I'm going to preface this review by saying that my only experience with Broken Bones BBQ is with the catering side of the business .... so there's that .... First off. The name. Man what an awesome name! Next .... from what I could tell when we ordered, the location is clean and well kept. The staff was very friendly this last time, in spite the fact that we last minuted the heck out of them. We needed 5 lbs brisket and 5 lbs pulled pork with slaw in a couple hours and they came through like champs. As for the food itself. Awesome. The pulled pork was fantastic. The brisket was good as well, but since no one on the entire planet can smoke a brisket as awesome as I can ..... like I said .... it was good but it's the item that was the stealer of the ever so elusive 5th star. The sauces were all good but the spicy wasn't really spicy. As for the cole slaw ..... fantastic! So put this all together and you get a pulled pork Sammy with coleslaw on the sammich which will ..... in my humble opinion ..... change you! read more

We have tried different day different times with absolutely no luck. There are better bbq places in the local area so don't waste your time with this one. Speaking for the special seasonal "Linebacker" BBQ sandwich and the side of fried okra I had on first visit-- when I saw the description written in marker on the whiteboard, I knew I had to make a tackle (okay, no more football metaphors). Susage, pulled pork, moist brisket and juicy slaw . . . all placed onto a Fresh football-shaped bun (nice touch), and yes, it was DELICIOUS. Cook told me to add spicy BBQ sauce but this sandwich doesn't need A SINGLE ADDITION. Good as is. They need to add it to menu permanently. Fried okra was just fine, and I grabbed some mustard BBQ sauce as well. Not bad. Low expectations as I usually head down the road to Rudy's in the Springs or Moe's in Denver . . . and BBQ in Colorado is a little unreliable . . . but glad I finally satisfied my curiosity. Came back for the ribs and they served them warmed up (not fresh, folks, darn it) . . . tasted decent, but had them re-warm them as a couple were cold on the inside. UGGGGG. We were looking for a good BBQ, very disappointed. 2 simple selections w/drinks over $32. At this price we hoped for good food. 1. Table was dirty and sticky. 2. Resteraunt used STYROFOAM, recyclable items are always better. 3. Order of 1/2 rack of ribs, coleslaw and fries: Ribs were dry, bland, and did we say bland. Coleslaw was uneatable, to think a head of cabbage died for this. Fries were good, hot and fresh. 4. Order of pulled pork (sandwich with out the bun), tasteless without their sauce. Tried original - total lack of flavor, sweet - mid grades, Spicy - lacked the expected bold flavor but left a good aftertaste. 5. Staff did not engage the customers even a little, nor even to ask how the meal was. 6. Did not get food poisoning witch at least gives it one star. Would not recommend this Resteraunt, and there would have to be serious changes to get us to go back. read more

This place is truly amazing! We stopped here after viewing a home for rent in Black Forest. The place was spotless and smelled amazing as we walked through the door. The front counter person was so genuine and helpful when placing our orders. The Food: The pulled pork and brisket were out of this world. The Hickory sauce was the best one by far and the RIBS...just WOW. The fried okra was the freshest I have ever tasted. It was bright green inside and cooked to perfection and crispy on the outside. So so good! The meats are moist, smokey and very flavorful. I had the chicken and pulled pork 2 meat combo. BBQ sauces are awesome, and memorable! They taste different from everyone else's... And in a good way. I finally found potato salad that's not sweet, and a new BBQ favorite that's worth the trip off the bird dog path. (And I love bird dog).
