A good local spot. Three stars for the portion of food, friendly service, and convenience if you live near 12th street. It's an older, small diner with old-school board menus and a TV mounted up top on a corner. The server at the register was friendly and personable, and included ketchup packs, napkins and forks with my order without asking for any. I ordered a bacon burger with a side of fries and this came out to $10.16. While the patty wasn't the best you can get/Five Guys quality, the portion size makes up for it. You can also get any kind of topping you want (at least, I asked for tomatoes, lettuce, grilled onions, and mayo without any issue). The fries were crispy and crinkle cut, not sure if they're fresh cut, but got the job done to satisfy my #Blizzard2016 cravings for restaurant food. Shockingly delicious burgers from this little throwback "hole in the wall"! I read reviews about the breakfast being pretty tasty, but it was late afternoon, we were in the neighborhood and wanted burgers. Both the bacon cheeseburger, and chili cheeseburger were huge, juicy, flavorful, and cooked per our request. The pricing is really amazing given the size, freshness and quality of the ground beef. It's likely that prices are so reasonable because money IS NOT being spent on ambiance or decor. I really liked the fact that it's an open kitchen, and you can watch your food being prepared. There are a few tables if you want to dine in, but it's a small place. I'm now looking forward to going back for breakfast very soon. read more

My go to spot for breakfast that delivers while I'm at work. My go to orders are chicken & waffles, and the omelette breakfast. Today I decided to try something else which was sooo damn good the T-bone steak breakfast. It comes with two eggs, home fries, grits & two slices of toast all for $10.99!!!! I love the home fries here (fried potatoes). I've only tried the breakfast food here which is served all day long! Delivery is always quick for me. I come here every Saturday and always end up getting the same things because it's SO good. Their bacon, egg and cheese croissants beat out the ones I've loved my whole life from a general store back home. Their waffles are light and fluffy and coffee is always hot. I've never tried anything else, but it's not their fault I'm addicted to the breakfast items. The man who runs the place also remembers my order, makes sure to include hot sauce in my bag and has warmed up a lot personally after remembering me as a repeat customer. Visited for the first time today and the food was great, but the service was a bit slow. I was standing at the register for about five minutes while the cashier was struggling to fill a tub with ice-cream for another customer. I felt that the cashier could have paused for a moment to take down my order so the cook could get it started. Despite this, once my order was placed, the food came out quickly, it was delicious and affordable. I can't believe I've been missing out on this no frills neighborhood diner. For the past couple of years I started eating at Murry and Paul's across from Brookland Grill. Diner breakfast food isn't that different from one to the other, but Brookland Grill's service was terrible. Recently, they tried to get me back. They put a flyer in the door and said they now deliver! Breakfast food delivered Saturday mornings? I'm in. New management maybe? So, I called this morning, but was told no delivery today. I mentioned the flyer and he asked if I had a problem. When I said yes, he hung up on me. Whatever. Back to Murry and Paul's and wonder how much longer before Brookland Grill starts to understand that all diner breakfast food is the essentially the same so you're going to have to start acting like you care that anyone would solicit your business. read more

4.5 stars. I had my first meal at Brookland Cafe yesterday and it was exactly what I was looking for. Being a recent Atlanta transplant I miss my beloved waffle house, and while this establishment is not of the 24 hour variety, the all day breakfast every which way menu was a sight for sore eyes. Waffles, pancakes, omelets, sandwiches, french toast, platters, even around 10 different flavors of ice cream. I was feeling particularly ravenous this morning so I went with the Obama Platter which consisted of - 3 pieces of Bacon, 2 ham, 2 sausage, cheese scrambled eggs (or however you like em), delicious home fries (which I smothered in mambo sauce) grits (great with maple syrup!) and white or wheat toasted (buttered if you like). All of this with a small cup of coffee for $10, what a steal. The meal was cooked to order and served hot in a Styrofoam container (even though I was eating in). This was one of the most expensive items on the menu and I still came in at 10, with a beverage, incredible! I ate every bite right there on the premises around 10AM and in fact that was the only meal I had for the rest of the day, some bread and grapes around 6PM notwithstanding. -.25 stars for lack of reusable place settings -.25 for no refills on coffee (maybe for dine in only, please) Great food, better value read more

Yea, so the place is a little dingy. Service can be iffy. But recently I had a "Italian-style" omelet that was really REALLY good. Significantly above-and-beyond what I would have expected to get from the Brookland Grill. Stuffed with chunks of marinated and grilled chicken, tomatoes, spinach, garlic, and provolone, it was a eggy log of deliciousness. I mean it was huge--probably a 12 inches long, with a height and width of 3 inches each. Imagine a Chipotle burrito, but longer. Combined with some toast and several scoops of grits (but you could get home fries instead, which I suppose would fit in with the Italian theme better than low-country grits), it was the type of hearty breakfast that makes me think "Today will be a good day." So if you're looking for breakfast in the NE, I highly recommend hitting up the Brookland Grill for this menu option. read more

So I work at the nearby hospital and was hungry as hell for something OTHER than cafeteria grade food. I took my chances and dialed up Brookland Grill (after, of course, reading fellow Yelper reviews). Figured I'd start with something basic and an easy enough meal that is pretty hard to screw up, a cheeseburger and fries. I was pleasantly surprised when I got my order. They gave me the basic 20 minute window but it was ready and hot within 15 minutes. I noticed that when I ordered, the guy asked me what I wanted on my fries. Puzzled, I said "Salt and pepper?" Wouldn't you know the dude actually put s&p on my fries! Pricewise, I apparenlty had an outdated menu and realized that once my meal came to a lil more than what I had expected (about $8/$9 with tax). However, once I opened up my container and realized the burger was almost as big as my face and the fries were plentiful I didn't complain. So as far as "burger and fries" price margin goes in the city, they were right on point (It also helps when you get the combo). I thouroughly enjoyed my meal, my fries never got soggy and my burger tasted fresh just like a "back yard" burger might taste. I also love that I didn't get "the itis" after I ate. While I've had much better burgers from more popular places this place will definitely see me again. Definitely worth a try. read more

Can you say hole-In-the-wall dive!?! Limited tables, mostly take out. All food served in styrofoam containers. Was pleasantly at the portions when we opened ours to see a large portion of hash browns and a large omelette. My daughter and I could have split one if we had known. She got the Greek and said it was full of veggies. I got cheese, bit ended up with ham & cheese. Ok with me. Waffles and pancakes smelled wonderful. Had a solid sausage, egg & cheese on a crossaint. Eggs were cooked well and the sausage wasn't greasy. My friend had the same but on a bagel - I would definitely recommend the flakey crossaint. My other friend had the 'Grandpa Special' chicken fried steak. He really enjoyed the gravy, but said the steak was a fatty cut and a bit too salty. The cashier was rather aloof and barely looked me in the eye. I probably would get my food to go next time. However there was a pretty sweet infomercial on TV and I was hungover, so I didn't mind sticking around and waiting the 10+ minutes for my sammy. read more

Wow, what a find. A little hole in the wall that usually can go either way. Seemed like a cookie cutter, big city place that serves frozen things heated up in the microwave. Not this place! The menu was large and had lots of eclectic things. When were first went there (as we were staying at a airbnb very close by) was for a quick lunch. The burgers were great and thoughtfully prepared. They had some interesting choices for sure which shows they put some thought into it. I also got he fries with the sausage gravy. I can't see sausage gravy on a menu and not try it. On the way home we decided to try them for breakfast. Seriously glad we did. I got the chicken and spinach omelete. I ordered sausage gravy on the side naturally. What's nice is the prices are super low, but it's one of those kinda places you don't wanna look around because you might see something that prevents you from eating here... Customer service wasn't the best. In fact, if I owned it that would be my first place fo improvement. Customer service and quality food is what keeps the neighbors coming back in. I had a burger and it reminded me of a burger right off the grill at someones cook-out. YUM! I bought food from here on Monday 12/28/2020. The black guy was not at the register, and the cooks seemed to be new. One of the cooks took the order. When I got home I had severe diarrhea and every thing I eaten came out of me via vomit. Both happening at the same time. I'm only doing this because if there is a problem I hope it gets resolved. I've eaten at BG in the past, no problems, I hope the cooks are being hygenic. Also I have not had diarrhea or vomit since then. read more

I had already found my breakfast spot in Brookland, but now this spot has me floored and now I'm downright confused. Brookland Grill is one of those places that could use a bit of a facelift on the outside AND inside so when you first walk into the place, you're like - hmmm...i know the reviews were good, but am i sure that i want to eat here? The answer: Yes. you. do! I ordered the steak and eggs (OE), double home fries as i am not a fan of grits, white toast with butter - about $7+/-, and my friend ordered the egg breakfast, scrambled eggs with the same sides as me, +/- $6. I asked for a glass of ice water and the guy at the counter told me that either there was water for purchase in the cooler behind me or tap water. Still being a newbie in DC, i've heard about some water issues around the DMV area, so I opted for the water in the cooler (DeerPark, 1.5 lt/$2). The server at the counter called for us to grab our order. I asked for hotsauce and ketchup and was handed the bottles from behind the counter - it had all of the crud of dried sauces on top of it - ehhh, not a fan of this. I wiped it clean and prepared my plate. First, I took a bite of the steak - oh, my! Seasoned just right, no need for the steak sauce provided. I cut into my eggs, letting them ooze over the edges of my steak and mixing with a little homefries, ketchup, and hotsauce - perfect bite! And so was every bite after that one.
