We stopped here for a quick American breakfast. The pancakes were terrific as was the rest of our food. Servers were friendly & the diner is cozy. We'd definitely come back!

Friendly service. This place has a classic diner feel with the front counter seating in addition to booths. The food was fresh and absolutely delicious. The biscuit is now the best I've ever had and the catfish was perfectly fried. I can't wait to try their lunch/dinner offerings on my next visit . I was also really honored to have visited a piece of D.C. history .

Two egg breakfast with a half smoke. The hashbrowns were amazing.

This diner is the oldest soul food restaurant in the world, and I felt privileged to be able to dine there yesterday. The service was warm, the soul playlist provided the perfect music for a Saturday morning, and the food was exactly what you want at a diner. It was comforting, fast and flavorful. I can't wait to return

Been wanting to try this place for a while now. The place was good and the chicken was fried perfectly! The Mac and cheese was also a really good. The candied sweet potato's and pancake/hot cake were decent too. The prices are pretty like a dollar or two more than other diners I've been too but I think it's also location. The service was fast and efficient. And the location has a true old school diner ambience to it. I highly recommend coming here and enjoy a bite from a historic location in DC.

Florida Avenue Grill is a staple in the DC community; and I finally visited it this morning for breakfast. I was pleased to get a parking space. Its decor is of an old fashion diner style with lots of heritage. I had a special, sweet tea, and a side of fried apples. It was good; but the service was slow. I got there about 9:30 a.m. and there was only one waitress. When I was leaving, several other employees came in. So, I would like to sum it up to my timing, but I can't.

Service was great, they were under construction when we came so it was practically empty. The fish was good, the biscuit didn't seem fresh it was hard and stale. The cheesy grits were alright they got me through and the egg was good. I'll be back to give this another try cause. Overall 7/10.

I've been coming here for years and the service has always been questionable, but on this occasion the menu did not reflect accurate pricing or combo options. In addition to no having correct menu options on ALL THE MENUS IN THE RESTAURANT, the staff was unable and unwilling to honor the pricing reflected on the menu. It's unprofessional and unfortunate. They claim to be the oldest soul food restaurant in the country, and the menus are clearly printed on someone's personal printer at home - but they decide to pass out inaccurate menus. To add insult to injury - they know people come here for breakfast/brunch on the weekends and the host was at the door telling people that they'd have to wait at least 45 minutes for food in a restaurant with 7 patrons in it because they only scheduled one person to cook. This will be the last time I spend money at this establishment. I did love bringing people from out of town here, but the unprofessional nature of the staff and the restaurant in general has moved Florida Ave grill to the list of places to avoid.

I love the old-school diner, Mom-and-Pop vibe of this place. Each booth has plaques featuring Black history, which was both inspiring and a great touch. The Caribbean porridge was absolutely incredible--definitely an underrated gem here! However, the catfish tasted like it might have been frozen, though it was fried well. The toast wasn't toasted enough, and it lacked butter, which wasn't provided either. The food is really average at best. On the plus side, the service was great! Several people checked on us throughout our meal, and the manager was very nice. Overall, a solid spot with a unique ambiance that's worth checking out!

Unfortunately, our visit to Florida Avenue Grill signified the end of era of a once great establishment. To begin, the place apparently was bought out, and is now named "Florida Avenue Grill and Half Way Tree". It seems the current owners apparently wanted to buy the "Florida Avenue Grill" name to capitalize on its fame as a historically excellent and important restaurant where once great food was served and history was made. Now to the food. Our main reason for coming back to down to D.C. was to again experience their smothered pork chops. They no longer serve smothered pork chops, but indicated we could have southern gravy on the side. The order took a long time to come, we were told that the order was "being cooked to order", and even offered some corn bread (which was a bit sweet). When our orders came out, we were shocked to see two overly fried and dried pork chops that came out with sides of Mac and cheese and green beans that were cold. What was worst was the chops were placed on a metal platter lined with paper - how does one eat and cut chops on paper lined platters - with butter knives?! Additionally, one of my sides (I ordered two sides of mac and cheese) never came out, and the "southern gravy" was primarily flavorless and cold. One of the staff apologized and promised to reduce our bill for the faux pas (we were not charged for the sides). Overall, it was not a great experience, and we're sad to see how the Florida Avenue Grill has been reduced due to poor food. The service was good and we could not fault the service, which we tipped well. In conclusion, a great institution unfortunately has been bought out and it's reputation tarnished and reduced.

Oh my gosh. I don't know what happened within the past year but I am not a fan. I ordered through ubereats and received this. Now, I know things can get messy in transportation and who doesn't love a good Mac/yams mixed moment but it was not it. Doesn't even look like a full scoop of candied yams. Both sides lacked flavor. Fish was terrible. That is not the same batter used previously which gives it the authentic Cajun fried catfish it claimed to be. I don't even think it was catfish. Reminded me of Swai. I attached a previous photo that I included in my 4 star review from last year for comparison. I'm hoping this was a fluke but it'll be a while before I visit again.

    Let's eat

Food was great. The Mac and cheese was soooo good. Juicy chicken, collard greens were good, candied yams were ok. Get the sweet tea, I asked for a cup to go. Only thing I will complain about is the to go cups, could have beed better.

Came here to have breakfast with my sister. I was here 25 years ago when I lived in Baltimore and was pleasantly surprised to see that Florida Grill is still standing strong. This place is filled with a rich cultural and community history, besides having amazing diner food. The staff treat you like you are family and I couldn't have spent a better morning than sitting and chatting with family at the Florida Avenue Grill for three hours.

Google led me to Ted's, which is both a sit-down restaurant, but also a cafe/bakery in the front. I had an iced Americano, and asked for a tiny, tiny splash of half & half. I also had a strawberry "poptart". The "poptart" was pretty good. When my coffee came out, it was white. Literally, white. It was whiter than the iced chai latte with whole milk that my husband had gotten. I had to send it back. I asked for it just black this time around, because I just didn't trust them to get "a splash" right. They were willing to do it, which was nice. The coffee was good, but it just wasn't what I had originally wanted.

I know Silver Diner is a chain in the area, and I knew I liked the food. I came in, sat immediately, and was greeted by the server. Placed a drink order and went to the menu. It has been a while since I have been to one of these, and I wanted to make sure it was still on the menu. Not sure what was going on in this section, but I swear the lights were either off or set to the lowest setting for dimming. I almost had to bring my phone out to give me some light. I confirmed that the item was still on the menu and waited for my server to come back. Listen, whether you have a party of six or a party of one, you really shouldn't skirt around my table and kind of ignore me. I was waiting to place my order and had to wait for my server to come back around to me. My order was finally taken and my drink showed up. I ordered a side salad and their meatloaf. My go to meal for this establishment. My salad came out pretty promptly as it was a food runner bringing this my way. Your typical pregame salad. Before I had this done, the meatloaf made its appearance. The meatloaf hit. It was exactly how I remembered it. For a late dinner, it definitely sat heavy in my stomach. But I know when I did have my head hit the pillow later I was easily fall asleep. Which, I could have done here with how dark the space I was sat in was. Meal was over, but it took a long time to get my bill and pay it. Once I had that out of the way, I went through the well lit portion of the restaurant to use the facilities before heading back out. Seriously, turn the lights up in that front street facing space.

We stumbled upon this new restaurant on the H Street corridor 8th street--a neighborhood that can feel a bit rough around the edges--but what we found inside was nothing short of a true gem. But the real magic arrives on the plate. Every dish we tried showcased fresh, high-quality ingredients, layered flavors, and a clear respect for the rich culinary heritage of the Ottoman and Istanbul royal family traditions. The restaurant business is tough, so I drafted this review with a bit of sadness. I had a good time…read morein large part due to the atmosphere and my date (my girlfriend). That said, a couple missteps that should not have occurred took this review into the negative realm. Let's start with the positive. This appears to be a great new addition to the neighborhood, and I hope it is supported. The appetizers were delicious and nicely presented. The pistachio feta with grilled pita was tasty and interesting. The halloumi with orange marmalade was as well. The hostess was engaging and friendly. The atmosphere was calming with a touch of casual refinement. One of the entrees was delicious (the scallops and grits). I'd order all three items mentioned so far, again. The negative. The second entree was the short rib. It was tender and.... Wow, way too salty. A shame because it was otherwise well cooked and nicely plated. But whoa. When the hostess came by, my girlfriend kindly said it was a bit salty. I "refined" her answer and said she was being nice, but it was very salty. The hostess went to note this for the kitchen (a positive for her), and because we are on the first floor outside the kitchen window I heard the conversation. The chef responded that he knew what had happened. Earlier when preparing the short rib someone (in his words) blasted it with salt. What this tells me is that they knew they'd made something close to inedible but served it anyway. At the end of our meal we had leftovers of the two apps and the short rib. We asked for a bit of extra pita to take home and they provided. Then the bill arrived. Not only was there no adjustment for the inedible short rib, but they charged us $2 for the pita. The least they could have done was just given us the pita. Ah well. Those two missteps; 1) serving a known and improperly prepared entree, and 2) not doing something to make good when reported, have led to this sadly negative review for a place that could and should have gotten a positive one. Hopefully someone there will see this, and the experience and review will be a learning opportunity that will help them thrive.
