I stopped here for takeout and tried their tola over rice with plantains. I've never had food from Sierra Leone before, so I was really curious to try it and had had this spot recommended to me. For me, none of the food really hit. The sauce was a little bland, the meat was a bit tough, and the plantains (though fried fresh in front of me) were kind of chalky and not sweet, like they weren't fully ripe. Overall, it wasn't bad food, but it wasn't good either, and I didn't feel compelled to finish my meal. The good news is they give you super generous portions, so one dish could easily feed you 2-3 meals, which helps justify the $20 price point. Still, I thought the flavor wasn't really there to justify the price. I won't speak to authenticity or anything like that because I'm not familiar with how tola normally tastes, but I definitely know when meat is tough or plantains are dry, so for me it was just okay. I wouldn't go back based on this experience, but they have a wide variety of dishes and for all I know the Jamaican side of the menu is a lot stronger. The other thing to flag is the prices don't match the menu - the tola was listed as 15.50 but rung up at 18.50 (plus mandatory 3% service surcharge). I brought it up at the time but they said all items on the menu ring up at the same price, which doesn't make a lot of sense, because then why would you list different prices by them on the menu? read more

Aside from the food, the restaurant also has a small number of soft drinks and water to offer as well. I also appreciated that they let me sample what they were serving that day, as a lot of the items sounded good and I couldn't make up my mind. I ended up going with the oxtail. It was pricy, but I must admit that they give you a nice portion of meat. The combo also came with two sides - I chose jollof and plantain. The jollof was good, and the plantain was perfectly ripe, but I'm annoyed that it only came with 3 measly pieces of plantain. As much as the combo cost, they certainly could have increased that portion size. Even though I didn't order it this time, the curry chicken that I sampled was GREAT. It's perfectly spicy and very flavorful. I will likely get that or the cassava leaf next time I return. Food aside, the inside of the restaurant is small, with a few tables to dine at on the inside, and a fairly sizable patio with tables on the outside. Of course we came with questions and typically like to ask what is recommended. The staff didn't rush us and we actually engaged with some of the customers as well regarding options. That's great but what was the best is the sweet lady working literally lined up everything we typically eat and were interested in for us to try out the food. This was probably the worst because everything was amazing! We ended up ordering cassava leaves, brown stew chicken, and jerk chicken. Wanted some etgusi as well but knew we wouldn't get through all the food. Portion sizes were huge! Literally 3-4 people could eat off one plate. My one and only gripe is that I REALLY wish the chef would scale back on the amount of scotch bonnet/habanero peppers he's puttin in the African dishes. Been patronizing this business for at least a year now, but today might've been my last time visiting. I always call before I come to make sure there's food because they are often out of several items. Today was no different, but when I arrived 10 minutes later, the server said no ox-tails and no rice as I looked at a tray full of rice. Adding insult to injury, both servers were rude to multiple guests. One guest offered me their food, after arguing with the server as well, and then the server attempted to charge me $50 for a half oxtail plate and proceeded to say "I can't take the oxtails or cassava off the plate." If you have time and money to waste then Sweet Sweet is your place. I like to support small businesses and rarely write negative reviews against them, but I do only if one really irked me. The Chef is very confident and says he's the best chef ever, which is great, you should have confidence in your own food. However, when I got it for lunch, it's wasn't made to order or at least fresh. I'm fine with paying higher prices if the quality/execution justifies it, and at $20, that's the higher end of what jerk chicken goes for. I came for lunch right at opening, and the chicken came out of the fridge, the sides (rice/cabbage) I believe all came out of the fridge too, and it was microwaved. To make it appear fresher, they put the jerk sauce over it, but the chicken was uneven, hard in places, and certainly not fresh. I just spent $20 on microwaved leftovers, are you serious? Texture was way off, and the chicken tasted old, like several days old. They do give a good amount of portions and that's why the higher price, but if you want your food to sell more and have more people try it, I would try a smaller portion price point, like a quarter jerk chicken instead of a half. If you sell smaller portions for around $10-12 range, you'll have more people try your food. If they like it enough, they'll come back and order the larger portions to back up your "best chef" claim. WIth more people ordering your food, it'll be fresher and you won't need to serve ones that don't sell the previous day. I did sample the oxtail and those were really good, I'll give it that. At $28 for one plate though, that's just too much I'm willing to pay for lunch or at any other times, most other places will serve oxtail for around $18, and the portions here aren't that much larger either. read more
