    Hot Pastrami in Rye
    Terrance G.

This place is a DC staple that is home to probably the best Pastrami sandwich in the district. It's a very unassuming place located off of New York Ave at the base of the city. The sandwich like the menu hasn't changed in decades and that's for a good reason. It's full of local folk that respects quality good without the premium unnecessary cost. I enjoyed every bite of the stacked Hot Pastrami ( made daily ) toasted rye bread, Swiss cheese , white onions, and a fresh crisp cold dill pickle. Yum..... thank me later

The place does not have aesthetics or great service. But their food was great. The pastrami sandwich is amazing (5/5). The French fries smelled amazing but didn't have much seasoning though..! They were fluffy not crunchy. The place was packed with people in a small space which scared me a little (2/5). But I guess it was everyday regulars. Overall don't go expecting anything else apart from good food. They have parking but they don't take cards.

I had a corn beef sandwich that was excellent. It melt in your mouth not in your hands. I also had a pastrami and corned beef sandwich which was also just as good. I highly recommend this place. It's a hole in the wall but the corn beef sandwich is the bomb!

Hot pastrami sandwich for $4.95, can't be beat

I am ashamed that I have lived in DC for 4 years, working a majority of that time working in hospitals in NE, and had never heard of Deli City. Thankfully, that has finally changed! This is easily the best sandwich I have had in DC, possibly even trumping my hometown of Philly (I'll deny ever saying that, though). For $4.95, I had the most fresh pastrami sandwich of my life. Seriously. The pastrami was just cooked. The rye was perfectly toasted. And the mustard was just the right amount of spice/kick. Oh, and they give you two pickles! Coupled with the exceedingly kind employees, this spot cannot be missed. They clearly have a very strong takeout business, but I encourage you to sit in at least once so that you can experience the warmth and happiness that is Ms. Delores. She knows all of her regulars' orders down to the exact quantity of sauce they prefer. I can only hope to attain that status someday in my life.

This place is easy to love. Deli City gives you that "hole in the wall" vibe with the vintage menu, furniture, and decorum. Vintage is en vogue now, but I'm pretty sure this isn't intentional. It wouldn't surprise me if everything in this store is the original. I love the fact that they still use words like "delicatessen" and "submarine" sandwich. It's like stepping into a museum. I visited for the first time and an older lady took my order. I will refer to her as "Mother." Mother was very friendly and helpful. The rest of the staff was friendly as well. I had to get used to the logistics as you order up front, pay towards the door, and have the option to dine in. This is a "tell em what you want" place, so you have to know what you like on your sandwich and they'll make it. I got a hot pastrami on rye, with provolone cheese, and Russian sauce, with a side of fries. The sandwich was great. The cheese was hearty. The french fries were top notch. Mother handed me my ketchup and I went to work. This is now my go-to place for a solid deli sandwich. I must warn you that this place is hazardous. Not because everything there is decades old (it's old but clean), but because I had trouble staying awake after eating. Maybe I'm getting older, but the sandwich and fries almost put me out for the count. I'm thankful that I made it home safely. Mother must have been praying for me.

We walked in on a Saturday afternoon and it was completely empty. The cook was sitting at one of the tables and the waitress was behind the bar (they don't serve alcohol) hoping someone would come in. There is an upstairs and a downstairs. We did not go downstairs but I'm assuming there are plenty of seats like upstairs. We ordered the hangry breakfast, which came with French toast, eggs and potatoes, the salmon burger and the chicken & waffles. It's a good thing we ordered so much becaus the chicken and waffles only comes with 4 wingettes. We ordered water but were told they were out of ice. Instead my wife ordered a $4 CANNED SODA because that is the only thing they had cold. $4 for a can is insane by the way. Since we were the only ones in the establishment we expected the food to come quickly but that seemed to take 20-25 minutes as well. Our food eventually arrived. The French toast was good. Flavorful but small. Sandwhich bag slices of bread. The potatoes were clearly from the Walmart frozen foot section. The eggs were ok. My wife's waffle was cool however the chicken was BLAND and SEASONLESS. We didn't even finish them. For $18 I expected more. The salmon burger was by far the best thing there. A thick cut of salmon that was flavorful. We should have gotten two of those. The waitress was nice. The food is overpriced. I should have known when we walked in and the place was empty. Not sure how they stay open having brunch without alcohol but to each is own. One and done for me as a neighborhood guy. The food isn't great and the prices are high. No reason to return.

They don't have typical bacon or sausage because "the owners don't eat pork" which really sounds like something more appropriate for their house, and not their restaurant business on Rhode island ave. The "chicken sausage" was a shriveled up piece of chicken paste that they cooked in the microwave. I ordered scrambled eggs, and when they came out, they had that crust that scrambled eggs get when they sit out after being cooked. The grits were lumpy and outside of the cheese sauce they put on the top - had no flavor. The French toast tasted like milk eggs and burnt grill. And the pancakes, were very obviously pre made and microwaved. Additionally - the meal I ordered is listed to come with a bread, eggs, a side and a meat. I asked for bacon, and was told the owners don't eat pork. I asked for the chicken sausage.. 5 minutes later the server asked me if I wanted the sausage spicy or not. Then when she brought the bill, there was a $4 up charge for spicy sausage that she neither told me, nor was it on the menu. And to make matters worse - the sausages were not spicy and were actually just flat out nasty. This is a SAD excuse for a restaurant. I'm sad that I spent calories walking there and dollars eating there.

I would've never thought to put those two items together but it was easily one of the best lemonades I've ever tried. I had to order a second one when my daughter decided my drink was now for her. Speaking of, my daughter ordered the Nutella Stuffed French Toast and rated it a 100/10. While waiting for my order, I had a chance to speak with one of the head chef's and he told me about the culinary program their offer to teach refugees culinary skills. I loved hearing that tidbit about the shop and found it truly admirable. Overall, my only gripe is the street parking situation can be a little tough but it wasn't too bad on this particular morning. I would absolutely return.

The collard greens are always good. The string beans were fresh out of a can. The meatloaf = dirty/ too much better. Never ever again. The cabbage has no flavor and the yams are decent. I've been here at least 5 times and I can say the fish is always consistent. The sides I think sit out far to long and lack flavor. It wasn't until the 3rd time I realized the sides were already made and sitting on the side for to go orders. There is nothing wrong with that but you can tell by the lack of freshness. I'll stop through monthly for the fish and collard greens but the rest of the sides can stay.
