Great! Went in for the first time. Margo knew what was wrong immediately and had my bike fixed in a couple of hours on a holiday weekend!

I've been here twice now and both times I had a pleasant experience and got exactly what I needed. The first time I stopped in, I was shopping for accessories (gloves, a side mirror) and Margo was friendly and helpful. The prices were comparable to what I had seen online when I was doing research. The second time, I went in for some bike maintenance, and again, the service was prompt, thorough, and friendly, and the service was reasonably priced. I got my gears checked and had my pedals replaced, which took about 10 minutes and was done while I waited. The dog wandered out and dropped a toy at my feet and let me pet him for a good five minutes. He was a total love bug, not a snarling beast. Overall I was very satisfied with my experiences here, and the customers who went in and out while I waited seemed equally satisfied. They also pumped up my tires for free. read more

I have given this bicycle shops five chances to act as if they care about customer service and bicycles in general, but they have always disappointed me with their rude attitude and lack of knowledge regarding cycling. Living in the neighbor of this shop all my life and its sad that it's the only local shop left in the immediate area. This place is terrible always has always been. The owner is mean, section is sub-par, and the random laborer mechanics are questionable at best. They are useful if you need a basic family bike or a very a casual rider. If you looking for a pro shop, keep pedaling elsewhere. I only shop there when I'm in very absolute pinch for a small replacement part. The reason I give it two starts instead of one. read more

I had been a regular customer of this establishment approx. 2-3x a year since I moved into this hood in 2013. It was in walking distance of my apt. which, when your bike has a flat, is great. I'd found the service ok, but not great, and the business hours are NEVER followed. Sometimes the shop is closed all day without notice and it almost never open at 10am, more like 10:30am or 11am. But what happened today has turned me off so much from this establishment I'm actually writing my very first Yelp review!! My back tire was flat and I brought it in on Tues. night (I would have brought it in on Monday, but the store was closed all day). Wed I picked it up after work and rode out to the East Village to see a show. When I tried to ride my bike back home, the back tire was flat AGAIN!! I had to walk 20minutes to get to the nearest subway and spend $2.50 to get myself back home. I called Margo the next day and told her what happened. She said she would 'take care of it for me on the spot.' But when my bf brought the bike in for repair and presented Margo with the receipt that I had already paid $40 the day before to have my flat fixed, she still charged him $16!!! Really?! She had even implied that she would only charge him for the tire tube, so when he questioned why it was $16, she admitted that she was charging him for the labor as well. Terrible customer service and absolutely no commitment to customer retention. I would rather spend the extra time and money to get myself to a better bike shop further away. read more

Just brilliant! I had a problem with my handlebars and Margo was able to fix it in fifteen minutes. She was even kind enough to take the time to explain what the problem was so that I can fix it myself in the future. It's rare to find a bike shop that isn't just waiting to rip people off, and even rarer to find that the people working there care about their job and their customers. I've purchased a hybrid bike and taken my old road bike into this shop for years. Everyone's experiences are subjective but my dealings with the shop's manager, Margo has been nothing but fantastic. She's kind and extremely knowledgable about all the new bikes technology and old-school bikes inner workings. I've learned many things speaking with her about new road bikes and which one might be best for me when I'm ready to upgrade my entry level Trek. After reading the reviews, I was a bit cautious, yet always willing to give local businesses some help. Well, I went yesterday to buy a couple of helmets and the owner/manager was pretty much immediately stand offish. First, why do bike shop employees find it so annoying that somebody would want to bring their bike in? Secondly, why is it that asking for assistance in buying a new helmet is like pulling teeth? What's with the attitude and absolutely zero advice other than price? I mean, I think it is a pretty reasonable question? Finally, when I asked to put air in my tires, how would I possibly know that I had to do it at the front door so your pit bull does not become agitated? Pretty much fail all the way around. Even the salesmen inside the store, mind you the only other person in the store, seemed irritated by her. read more

I have this really old crummy bike that felt like it was on its last tires - squeaky wheels, shot brakes, gummed up and dirty parts. It was actually getting hard to ride. I was thinking it needed a tuneup. The woman who runs the place suggested an overhaul. I was reluctant because I didn't know how much longer I was going to keep the bike and the overhaul was expensive. I decided to trust the woman. I'm really glad I did. The bike feels like a new bike. It's fun to ride again and I've actually been able to cut down on my commuting time. It rides that much better. That mechanic has magic fingers. I don't understand why anyone would have a problem with customer service in this shop. The woman is pleasant and respectful. Maybe they had a problem because of the way they approached her. I've used this shop for years and my daughter has used it too...never a problem. While I'm there she always has some good bike advice and is happy to answer all my questions. The dog - also not a problem. She's safely behind the counter and she doesn't bark, growl or menace anyone. I can totally understand wanting protection. Easy to criticize but put yourself in her shoes for a minute. Overall, I'm happy, my bike is happy...what more would I expect? read more

I like this place. It's the only bike shop I have experience with so I gave it 5 stars cause I have nothing to compare it to. Margo is pleasant and does a good job. Some people complain she isn't warm and fuzzy. I'm from the South so I expect a certain directness in my interactions with people in the North, and that's what I get from Margo. But there is warmth there too, which some people miss I suppose. Who knows why. She knws her stuff and is also kind. She's given me a quick tweak or pump of air on the house too. (only in Mayberry will Gomer Pyle give you air for free. these days you gotta pay. But Margo gave me air for free.) read more

I'm having trouble even giving this place one star. Seriously. Is there a 0 stars option? I live around the corner and like Chris below thought I had hit the jackpot also. I have been in there several times to get parts and the woman you talk about is extremely rude, I concur. She barely even talks to her customers. I had to get a new clamp for my front tire, and when I asked her for one she just took one out, put it on the table and said "13" as in $13 dollars which was a little too much. Nevertheless I needed it so I got it anyways. But thats not the worst part: My girlfriend's bike hadn't had its tires replaced in a while. When we brought it in all they did was fix up the inner tube. Her spokes were loose, and they did not even offer to fix them up! Her bike could have collapsed on her. Needless to say the tires looked busted, so of course as soon as she rode it again the inner tube busted. We brought it back in again and asked if the woman thought the tires needed to be replaced. She said they didn't and put in a new inner tube, even though this was like only a week later and no inner tube should go that fast. The next week my girlfriend rode her bike and it went flat AGAIN. We took the bike into another shop and the mechanic mentioned how horrible the tires looked...they were totally coming off. In addition her spokes were extremely loose and one was completely broken! It was totally unfit to ride and she could have gotten in a serious accident. I am NEVER going there again and suggest you all do the same. I can't wait until I see this place shut down for good. I've gone here a few times just for the convenience of being close-by and I now regret it after realizing I'd been jerked. One time the price was $10 more when I picked up my bike than the price stated initially. Another time I had an issue with my bike that I later realized was not an issue, instead of saying that it wasn't a problem she opted to "fix it" even though it actually made my bike worse. Also, $20 minimum for credit cards. My charge was once $18 or $19 and she wouldn't let that slide so I told her just charge me $20 so I can pay with credit. Just seems greedy. I'd recommend Arnold's in Sunset if you're from this area or nearby. I've gone there on some occasions and at times they didn't even charge me for simple things like tightening or loosening parts. Brooklyn Bicycle Center charged me around $10 or $15 just to loosen some bolts one time. I think a good bike shop will tell you the honest truth if you have an issue instead of looking for any way to make a buck from you. read more

YES I gave this shop 5 stars. I've been coming here for over 5yrs and I have never been dissatisfied. I have bought 3 bikes from here. She has a great selection of bikes. She has never try to sell me anything that I didn't need. Their a little pricy but I don't mind spending the money somewhere I feel welcome and I'm known on first name basis. I didn't think I could find a bike shop with worse staff than R&A on 5th Ave. but, folks, we have a winner! The staff here are idiots, particularly the boss lady. Not only is she incredibly rude but her bike knowledge runs the gamut all the way from A...to B. The shop is the perfect storm of incompetence. Luckily, there seems to be very little chance it will remain open for much longer. I went in there with my 2 year old son on the back of the bike to get some air for my slightly flat tyres. The lady was an unhelpful ..... when I asked for the pump; and then the kicker - "75 cents", "Excuse me?", "I said air is 75 cents" - Not fuckin' likely. Has anyone else encountered an actual bike shop that charges for air? FYI, the street is lined with car tyre shops who have no problem giving air for free. (Also, Yelp needs to allow a zero star option because that's what this place deserves.) read more

This is the first review I've ever written for Yelp, and I wish it wasn't a one star. I've been a regular customer for years, first when I lived around the corner and then (this detail will be important in a bit) when I moved a 25 minute walk away. I believe in supporting local business, and have done so with them despite suspiciously high prices and the owner's lack of people skills. So I go in the other day to drop my bike off for a tuneup. She recognizes me, we chat and she tells me my bike will be ready the next day. So 24 hours later, I walk the 25 minutes to the store (arrives hours before the advertised closing time) only to find the place shuttered. No note, nothing. And more to the point, no message on my phone. When I called today there was zero contrition on her part. Forget offering a discount, she wouldn't even apologize for not calling. Now I'm the last person to begrudge someone a 'family emergency.' But, in the interest of customer service, at least let people know. To then show not a shred of remorse was the last straw. High prices and appalling people skills. Avoid this place unless desperate. read more

I saw the negative Yelp reviews, but this place is pretty close to where I live and I didn't want to have to walk farther with my bike. I asked for new tires to replace flats. Of course once they had my bike in the back the lady came out with an extra problem (she said the chain was out of alignment, and that I couldn't ride it like that). I said sure, even though I'm pretty sure that's the most minor of problems, because she was making me feel uncomfortable. The extra fee she charged for the "problem" that took probably a full minute to repair? $16. What a rip off, never coming back here. read more

I was surprised by the negative comments about the staff. The woman who runs the store is quiet and abrupt in a brooklyn way, but is certainly not unkind. Maybe unpolished or not obsequious. I get the feeling they are struggling and people come in wanting cheap bikes. But for me it was great. Found them both friendly in a respectful way - almost as if they were shy and a little perfunctory from that. Was treated nicely and helped really quickly - $3.75 for seat adjustment and air - even though my needs were small. I get that air is free most places, but why shouldn't it be okay to charge for this service? I did have to ask specific questions to get answers, but overall felt glad to have this shop nearby. I have been coming to this bike shop for over 6 years & I love the service and the knowledge. Margo is very helpful in all matters from bike maintenance to the best biking routes to transporting your bikes. Many times I have stopped in and gotten great advice, or a tweak for my bike, and even help putting bikes on a car rack, all free of charge. She's fair and knowledgeable. Five years ago she helped us pick the right bike for my son that had an adjustable seat that would grow with him. She could've easily sold us a bike that would have needed to be replaced almost immediately as he grew, but instead she was considerate of our financial needs. When he outgrew the bike last year, she recommended a new bike that I could eventually use when he outgrows it. Again she wasn't just seeking profit. I have to also give partial credit to Margo for helping me get back on a bike after 19 years. I had a bad bike accident in college, and had developed a phobia of bikes to the point where I was convinced I would never ride again. My wife took me to buy a bike from Margo because she had gotten such helpful advice in picking out her bike the year before. Margo was nice and down to earth about helping me pick out a bike that would help me get back into riding. Now I ride to work everyday and ride to the park a lot. Thanks to Margo I had an easy transition back into bike riding. Brooklyn Bicycle Center is a great neighborhood shop. read more

So, I went to this bike-shop yesterday to check out this bike i've been looking all over for. I arrive at the store which seems odd walking in & how thing are on the wall not use to seeing a lot of bikes out with one pedal. So, i ask can i ride the bike before i purchase it and i was told i can't the woman tells me " one person messes it up for everyone". With that i'm assuming someone stole the bike & never returned it. So, i felt stupid, because i was willing to give my credit-card and identification & still i was denied. I've never went anywhere where i can't test what i purchase i'm pretty sure no one wants to do that unless you just like not knowing & having a headache with whatever you buy. But i'm not trying to write a bad review at all, i just feel everyone should test anything they buy. She was helpful, but i was willing to give my money away easily to someone that wouldn't let me ride what i want to purchase. Overall i wouldn't go back here they have my bike, but i feel like i'm blameworthy for something someone else did in the past. Everywhere i go i test ride and never have any complaints at all. So if you guys want to go here you go they have a variety of bikes, but if you willing to buy you i'm just not one of those kind of individuals. And she can't swindle me with her words. Maybe someone younger, but not someone who's been around town knowing crooks and how people operate the right way. I wish i had the opportunity to ride the bike then i would have still wrote a review of my experience, but since i had that disadvantage with this one encounter at this place i never been i'll never go back again. Far as the other comments on here i read, i was skeptical at first but they do have a lot of bikes if you're looking to check it out. I needed a rear brake cable, and thought that there were a few other things that had gotten out of alignment. They showed me the parts -- I had shredded the drank bearings and gouged the axle. $177 later (including 2 brake cables, front and rear pads, and a complete tuneup), it felt better than the day I had bought it. I'm not much on bike maintenance, and my Schwinn was probably a poor choice initially. But these things must have been on their way out the year before, when another shop 'tuned it up' for $98. All done in under 2 hours, after I walked in at 11am on a Saturday. They know bikes and I'll be back. read more

I've had great experiences with Brooklyn Bicycle Center so far. The shop owner was super polite (as I was to her), and very very helpful. I'm a novice, so she taught me how to lock my bike, even how to attach the cable to the handlebars when I'm riding. I had my bike serviced there, and when it developed a weird sound in the front wheel, they realigned it for free (and reattached my bike lock holder, which I had botched). I am VERY happy this place is in the neighborhood and hope it stays forever. read more

I have used this bicycle store for more than a decade. In the past, I have had older bicycles serviced, but more recently, I sold an old bicycle on Craig's List and selected a "comfort frame" 7-speed bike here, which is perfect for the flat bicycle path located on Ocean Parkway, where I live. Margo is the woman who runs this store. She is always helpful in answering questions. There are a lot of bicycle accessories on display. The selection is well edited....kind of like those boutiques that are reviewed in the Times Style section, where the verb "curated" is used a lot. Next to this store is a very good Peshawari-Bangladeshi-Indian restaurant, so if you ever have to wait for a repair, just fall in there and order anything ranging from a snack to a meal. The bicycle which I selected was a Jamis. At first, I thought that the handlebars were high, but now I realize that this is because that bicycle is designed to be ridden in an erect stance, as opposed to the leaning over the handlebar stance that most racer type bicycles expect the rider to assume. I have to be honest and admit that some of the bike helmets on display are high-priced, compared to what you see advertised on line, and once I made the mistake of asking for a pair of clips to use to compress trouser cuffs, without asking how much they cost (surprised that they cost quite a bit), but aside from these two slight negative factors, I have a very good feeling about this neighborhood resource for cyclists. read more
