The place is hit or miss this. We loved everything about this place when it first opened but now the food is either really good or just ok. Two stars for the sunset view. But that was the only good thing about this place. It's very expensive and not at all worth the money. Why in the world did we wait 45 minutes to be seated for this? Not to mention an hour for the food, half of which was cold. We asked the waiter what was freshest and he acted like it was a weird question. The margarita was gritty. But the host was kind. I had given this place a 1 star review, but I really think they turned their game around big time. This place is still kind of pricey. After all, they serve seafood outdoors in NYC. But, the service is much better, they serve draft beer upstairs, and they're extremely friendly. I think they got overwhelmed trying to rush the opening for the Summer '12 season, but if they survive, this place is going to continue to be a great spot. Pro-tip: If you work in Manhattan and live in BK, take the water taxi home from work, go here, then take their free shuttle to the F-Train. Great night. read more

Update: Bumping this place up to 5 stars. This recent visit was even better than my last. The crab legs were meaty, succulent not to mention enormous. I ordered the Royale for two again and shared with my husband and this time we got it cajun style. It was much more flavorful that the traditional but not very spicy. I tried my friends who ordered the same but with the garlic butter and it seems that the garlic flavor sticks to the meat the most out of all of them. I am going to order it that way next time. Great service, very attentive. It was as if we had multiple people waiting on us. One kept coming by to empty our shell dishes, another took our orders, another served us, and other brought us drinks, to go containers, extra butter and lemons (gotta have my lemons!) and pretty much whatever else we desired. Came out to a little over $300 not including tip for 5 people including two royale's, one triple slider order, three appetizers (12pc wings, calamari, and popcorn shrimp) three sides (two macs, and one mashed potatoes) , four beers, and two soft drinks. At roughly $65 a person for top quality seafood I would say it was entirely worth it. My friends who dined with us love seafood and it was their first time here and they were really impressed with the place as well. Definitely coming back! read more

I believe everyone who said that they had a horrible experience there, but I was not one of them. We went with a large group for a birthday celebration and all the seating and arrangements had been made beforehand, so things actually went pretty smoothly. The food was way better than I expected considering all the negative reviews. In fact, I would say the food was very good. The views can't be beat and the staff was all quite friendly. It's clear from the other reviews that there are a lot of kinks to work out, and I'm not sure why they've been so ill prepared. It does seem that their kitchen is not big enough to serve all the seats in the restaurant. That said, we had a great time and we look forward to going back. read more

I'm sorry to continue the trend of bad reviews, but they deserve it. I was attracted to this place because it looked really cool. Sorta like a sandy 3 story outdoorsey beach restaurant. The wait for a table was insanely long. I decided to just go for the bar. I ordered a watermelon tini with rosemary vodka. It was delicious. I also ordered half a dozen lobsters. I paid the bartender in cash and he didn't even bother to give me a receipt. I kept waiting and waiting, and my oysters never came. Did they go to Canada to find my oysters? I told one waiter about it, he said he'd help but did NOTHING. Finally, I found another waiter and told him about it. We had been waiting for AN HOUR. His reply was, "omg!" And immediately went to talk to the chef about it. Five minutes later, the chef arrived at our table, introduced himself, and gave us a dozen lobsters (we had ordered half, so half dozen were on the house). I gotta say ordering from the bartender sucks. The reason our food took one hour to come was because he never placed our orders in the kitchen. I event went up to the bar to remind him but he didn't give a crap. The oysters were delicious but I had diarrhea after that. Imagine how bad the journey from Brooklyn to Jersey was. Went back this weekend and loved it loved it loved it. I had the side of Mac and cheese and it was awesome. I had the key lime tart and I loved the graham cracker crust. My 5 year old son enjoyed playing a little miniature golf after dinner. They have a great sand castle area in the back for kids. I got the Cajun crab again and it was amazing. read more

I've been mulling over writing this one up for a few days. I guess I feel bad for kicking a spot when it's down, but even though they obviously care and are really trying to correct the vagaries of the poor service reviews - they're just so clueless still. The food is fine, but since the offerings are predominantly of the ilk where you boil water and add protein and Old Bay or butter, it doesn't overcome the unevenness of the service and experience - especially not at the prices they're charging. No amount of "how is everything" check ins over a course of an evening will make up for the very basic things they get wrong. For instance - we got there early evening this past Friday and as we topped the stairs we encountered the obligatory "Please wait to be seated" sign. Immediately in front of us was a table with three staff members standing behind it, however, after about three minutes of us idling there, we decided the three behind the table were members of a charity youth group selling raffle tickets and not serving staff....that is until one of us pointed out they were wearing t-shirts with the restaurant's name emblazoned on them. Whatever it was that these children were doing behind the table I'll never know, but approaching us to seat us wasn't on the agenda. Eventually we thought we'd flag one down and see about sitting in the bar and were told cheerfully, "Sure, go right on ahead!" We ambled over to a high table and sat down. Sadly no one told us that sitting in the bar meant a limited menu and that we had to order from the bartender. Consequently, we wandered back OUT into the main pavilion (or whatever we're calling it) to reapproach the host/ess staff and managed to coax a lovely table by the balcony's edge out of them. After about fifteen minutes of swivel headed glances around the patio, trying without success to discern whether the main floor was perhaps also bar service, since there was no waitstaff in sight and the busboy ignored/didn't hear our inquiry regarding the availability of a waiter, a nice young woman came over to get a drink order. Based on her greeting of "We are so happy you decided to join us this evening and chose to come out here" I got the sense that the management is reading these reviews and eager to do better. Unfortunately, though the drinks came out quickly, all of our food came out at the same time - salads, appetizers, sides, main courses all at once - with the exception of the one appetizer which then oddly followed about ten minutes later... The second round of drinks was a cluster of confusion after one of the busboys came over to ask if we had ordered "X" and it didn't occur to us to say "No, we ordered Y" instead we just said "No, not us" which meant the second round of drinks required a second/third request before they appeared. And since the water is self serve (huh?), it was more an issue than I would normally have made of it. It's disappointing. They clearly mean well, but it's just an epic fail service wise. It's not a difficult or far trek for me to get there, but had I come in from further out, I'd have been verging on angry (of course, anything that stands in the way of me eating normally makes me angry, I admittedly have a short fuse when I'm hungry). Add to it that they are still cash only which I don't mind when the bill is reasonable, but who carries that kind of cash around these days? I happened to have it on me that night, but that's rare! The view however, really is spectacular. Sorry, I'm trying hard to find good things to say though! I really do want this place to get it together and succeed - I used to love going to these kinds of places when I was little and to have one so close (but yet so far!) would be fantastic! Get it together please! Maybe hiring grown ups and not children for whom this is quite possibly their first jobs would help! On Sunday, September 16, 2012, my daughter and I went to Brooklyn Crab. We got there early because we had heard that it could get pretty crowded quickly. I had also read some of the reviews or this place and some were good and others not so good. Our experience was a good one. The service was quick, attentive and fast. My daughter had the all-you-can-eat crabs. They were not enough, however, but the servings kept coming. I had the fried oysters appetizer and it was a good portion, sweet and very tasty. We both had the salald with the lettuce wedge, blue cheese dressing, bacon bits and it also had pieces of red onions, very nice and a good size also. I then had the crab cake and it was sweet and delicious as well. My daughter then tried the cool platter which came with snow crab legs, steamed shrimp in the shell, oysters and crab. She was quite satisfied with the meal. We both had watermelon drinks and they were OK. We then shared Steve's Key Lime Tart and it was very good. Our experience at Brooklyn Crab was a good one and we shall return. Also, one of the owners came and asked us if we had been there before and we said it was our first time and she was very welcoming and we asked if they were open all year round and they are. Brooklyn Crab is fun if you're there with 30 or so of your friends after desecrating the nearby Red Hook Track with a little game some people call "Beer Mile." Because at that point you'll be so drunk that you'll eat or drink anything and you won't worry about the price. First of all, it loses major points for being ALL about the up-sell. For absolutely everything we ordered, the waiter suggested a way to make it more expensive. A friend ordered a Strawberry Daiquiri (so what! who cares!) and he suggested she make it a large. Which she did. And it was in a freaking shillelagh. (What is the appropriate term for those tall, plastic cups? Besides "Glass of Shame"?) I ordered the Crab Cake Appetizer (which was terrible, by the way, $14 worth of mostly bread crumbs and a little crab) and he raised his eyebrow and said I should probably get the entree portion (he said it like he was concerned for my hunger, but I know he was thinking up-sell! up-sell! up-sell!). We ordered a pitcher of beer and immediately he says, "I think you need two." We ordered the Cool Platter (1/2 lb. Snow Crab Legs, 1/2 lb. Spicy Peel & Eat Gulf Shrimp, 4 Oysters & Creamy Mustard Sauce for $30) and he goes, I kid you not, I think you need the SUPER Cool Platter (which is $48). WTF dude? Stop telling us our business. And it's simultaneously all about the up-sell AND overpriced. Drinks, from a glass of cheap wine to a watery vodka soda, are about $9...normal for Manhattan, but not for Red Hook (unless you are at Fort Defiance. I will pay just about anything for their amazing Irish Coffee). The aforementioned crab cake that was $14 was definitely not worth it. A simple Spinach Salad will set you back about $9. A dozen HOUSE oysters are $24 (and by house I think they mean they harvested them in their basement because that's what they tasted like). The crabs, crabs, crabs, are good, but they are so drenched in Old Bay that they could've been rhinoceros meat and I wouldn't have noticed. Good things? The space is nice - sometimes it's just nice to sit outside somewhere in the city with an actual view and somewhat fresh air (what IS it about NYC-ers that we crave sidewalk seating in the summer? So we can inhale truck exhaust and not hear conversations due to constant construction? Why do we do it?). They have a shuttle to and from the train, which is helpful. They have Mini-Golf, but it's kind of rank, and Mini-Golf is lame and frustrating anyway. So, really, I don't think you'll enjoy it if you have your wits about you. Best enjoyed if you're already drunk or, like, a 5-year-old at a birthday party (because it would be a great place for a 5-year-old's birthday party). read more

Yes my wait was long but the staff were really friendly, helpful and understanding. When you were seated, you got great service, your food served fast and it was all good. The view was fantastic on top of it all. The reviews are a bit harsh on here...my experience was enjoyable and I will come back - hopefully the next time the wait won't be as long but to me that doesn't matter when you are relaxing on the deck with a beer and having a good time with friends. #perspective read more

Came here with my wife last night around 8. Great location on the water with beautiful harbor views, the sunset and general feel of the place made us feel we were in the Keys! The place was jumping, it had just stopped raining and we were told it was a 1 1/2 hour wait for a table in the beautiful upstairs dining room. We decided to sit at the bar for some cocktails and raw bar. The place has only been open a few days and they have some staffing and logistics issues to work out, hopefully they'll be cleaned up in a couple of weeks. That being said, service at the bar was friendly and fairly speedy. The raw bar was fresh and delicious, we had the Super Cool platter which has oysters, crab legs, lobster and shrimp. It was all delicious. By the time they called us for our table we were full so we didn't stay for dinner. But we will definitely be back. Also, they have bocce and miniature golf in the back and enough sand outside around the place to make you feel you're at the beach. Definitely recommend, and once they work out the opening day kinks we'll move to 5 stars. read more

I've been here twice and the open space, partial view of Lady Liberty, King Crab legs are da bomb, and the cool breeze make this place special. The lack of parking, slow service and high prices are the down side. I stopped in for a meal today and the tri-level complex was relatively empty due to the dozens of open picnic tables. I ask the waitress for a table and she says it's a 40min wait, I look at the 12-14 empty tables very confused and ask "why is there a wait with all this open seating?" In a very long response she said the kitchen can't handle the restaurant with the tables full, but I can't wait at the bar until they can catch up. REALLY?!?! A restaurant with that much seating should be able to accommodate and feed 1/4 of BK. read more

The restaurant opens at 4:00 pm, got there at 3:55 and told it will be about a 1:15 wait for a table. After waiting 2:15 we were finally seated. We ordered the Brooklyn Crab Royale for 2 and waited another hour. For the price this place charge, they should offer bread for the table and if the dish is for two people you should give two piece of corn on the cob and not one small 1/4 cob.The food was good but the price and wait was rediculous. Don't think I will be going back to this place unless they tweak the price a little. City Island is still the best place for great seafood. read more

Went on a Sunday and got there at 1:30 to be the first to get a table. As we waited, we chatted with the bartender Ariel, who is super nice and makes a great drink! There were 11 of us and we got seated right away. We sat for a while drinking and having apps, and then order entrees. The waitress was accommodating, if a bit pushy. Food was delicious. Very fresh! Some reviews comment on the price, but the portions are big enough to split. After we went downstairs and had pitchers of beer, which were reasonably priced, and played cornhole, which was free. We all had a great time! Trick is to get there early. The vibe of the place invites people to sit longer then you would in a more traditional restaurant, which is why I think the waits are long. read more

The boyfriend and I decided to hang in Red Hook for the day, and catch as much sun as we could before winter was upon us. And then we were hungry. He was craving a lobster roll and I wanted a drink. So we agreed on this place. Much of the space is outdoor, like the ground floor bar and second floor dining area. We settle into the indoor bar on the second floor. We were quickly greeted by the bartender with menus. Obviously they have a nautical theme, but what I thought was really cute were the lights hanging off the fishing poles and old school beer cans lining the windows. We both agree the crab rolls were a bit pricey. So we order a snow crab grilled cheese, shrimp po boy, bloodly breuklen, brooklyn crab michelada and a side of fries. Everything came in a timely manner and everything was superb. I'm not one to order grilled cheese, but this one was tasty...the bread was buttery and crispy, chunks of crab and a nice chunky tomato sauce to dip with. Po boy was packed with a good amount of jumbo sized shrimp. Fries were done well and stayed crisp thru out the whole meal. The bloody breuklen was delish with the spiced tequila and came with a little crab claw to snack on. The bartender told me they have happy hour oysters Mondays and Tuesdays until winter rolls around and is switched to Wednesdays and Thursdays. I do love myself a good happy hour oyster deal. i'm happy to report that i had an experience that is also not consistent with the other reviews which hopefully means this place is getting its act together (or that it wasnt that bad in the first place). we went with 12 people on a saturday night at 7pm. we were told, by a very nice server, there would be at least an hour wait but the bar was open and very convivial and reminded us all (southerners and australians mostly) of lovely and relaxed beach restaurants with broad views and horizontal sunlight. and it was hot as hell outside but the fans were on full blast and we were drinking pitchers of coronitas for 11 bucks, on ice, with limes, pure fun. we ordered some very good raw oysters and spicy shrimps to snack on and chilled out with our friends. a little over an hour into our wait they brought us to our tables on the deck, open air, cooler breeze by this point, string lights overhead, with a view of the harbor and the statue. we ordered more buckets of coronitas from our man alex, who was great, then the northeastern steam pot, a million blue crabs, fish and chips, fried scallops, fried oysters, mac and cheese, all of which was cooked very well and super delicious. the fried oysters and scallops were a giant hit and the crabs and lobsters were perfectly steamed and all was very reasonably priced. we were there from 7 to 11 and had an absolutely great time. we'll go back again and probably soon and probably once a month forever. there is not a place in new york like this place where you can sit outside at picnic, eat fried oysters and crabs that are brilliant and dont cost one million dollars, watch the sun set, chill out. a bunch of the red hook crowd is already hating on it, yelpers are clearly piling on, but i think this place deserves a visit. read more

Really like this place. The ambiance is nice and the top floor is (in my opinion) the best seating and usually the less noisy (not so many kids up there). The waiters/waitresses are super friendly and informative. The food is good and it's just a fun place overall. However, my only issue concerns their lobster and their crabs. They are TINY. I mean $30 for a lobster you'd think it'd take me a little more than 3 minutes to eat what little meat was in there. They should probably think about investing in larger sized crabs&lobsters. The place does not disappoint. Went to dinner with my bf & parents on a busy Sat night. Was told 30-45 min so we grabbed a drink & hung out on the patio. Twenty five minutes later we were seated on the upper deck. Our server was friendly, funny and attentive (they supplied us with a blanket for those who were chilly). Brooklyn Crab: The Perfect Storm of Amateur Staff/Management, Poor Business Model, and Bad Food. Whoa, what a disaster... where to begin? I didn't yield to the prior yelp reviews. what a mistake... The wait: When we first arrived, we were told a 2 to 3 hour wait. We reluctantly put our name down and against better judgement waited, and waited... and waited. If anyone is forced to wait that long for food, it better be great. this was not. Tried to waste time at the bar. The bar: Way too small for the volume of people and the bartenders were bad. One was too busy waiting on her sister and her friends with their orders overlooking others that were patiently waiting. And she seemed to make a point to finger every bottle of beer she served. I ordered one beer and it was wrong. and the bar is cash only. management: i dont think there is any. masses of people were waiting on tables while about of a third of the tables were open (and stayed open for extended periods of time). They were also seating parties of two in their own table of six instead of putting them with other small groups. I over heard that the kitchen couldn't keep up with the volume of people. Obviously no one crunched the numbers before open this place up or the kitchen is in disrepair. Food: Bad and overpriced. If you have ever had real crabs in maryland or any other decent restaurant you will know that "mustard" will kind of resemble spicy mustard in appearance. This was replaced by what looked like a sweet potato substance. And there was hardly any meat in the crab to get anyway so it didn't really matter. A couple of the crabs had been dead for some time and the lungs were totally black. And they had mallets but no sharp knives to break the claws of the crabs... so the mallets were simply for show which i saw people just hammering the entire crab. some what comical but not enough to ease my depression. It is obvious who ever opened this place has no idea what they are doing but just banking on enough suckers like me to try it once. The shrimp were also bad. the only thing edible were the fried clams and it was because they were fried. no wonder they have so much habanero flavored hot sauces around to kill your taste buds before you eat. best thing we ate was the mac and cheese which was also comical. Everyone in our party had to eat basket after basket of crackers to kill the hunger for waiting so long because the food was not worth eating. And it was horribly expensive. Our waitress was good and was receptive to us because she knew we were struggling. This place did make a few firsts for me. It was the first time i have ever waited over 2 hours for a restaurant and it was the 1st time i have ever left a restaurant hungry. good thing the bodega was open near my girlfriends house late because the 3, $1.49 bags of potato chips i had to eat so i could go to bed hit the spot! They took a while to bring our food but the manager came out and apologized then took $30 off our bill with no complaints. Everything we had was really great from the mussels, fried shrimp and calamari. Even the lemonade was good. People at tje next table had fishbowls. I will be trying that next time. read more

First off, it is hard to find a crab place in NYC and for me to be able to find a good crab place, that's even more crazy. Supposedly, this place been there for awhile but people didn't really start coming till Ikea opened up nearby. I came here on a weekend night, and we all know eating out on a weekend is hectic since more people would eat out on the weekend than on weekdays. I went in a party of 5, so just in case, we did call ahead of time to see if we need to make reservation and we didn't. Transportation, drove there, I heard that the subway doesn't get you there. It is nearby Fairway and Ikea. First impression of the place, pretty nice, dining area was at the 2nd and 3rd floors so you can get a nice view. Love the atmosphere, friendly staffs, clean, and nice music. Felt nice, they weren't playing hip hop or fast pace music, it was just simple slow songs that goes really well with the view. Got there, hostess was really friendly, she asked how many people we had since only 3 of the 5 were there first then told us to hold on for a bit so she can check inside to see if anything was available since it was pretty chilly out that night, probably not a good idea to sit outside. But my 'smart' boyfriend suggested that we sat outside since he like the breeze (the breeze to him, is like a very cold kind of coldness to everyone else). The hostess was smart on picking up the vib I gave out and was pretty sure I didn't want to sit outside but since my boyfriend insisted, we sat outside. We did do a bit of drinks and appetizer ordering while we waited for the rest of the party. When the rest of the party came, I got my wish, we were to move indoor where it wasn't cold. The hostess was very understanding and the other staffs there helped us move from the outside 2nd floor patio area to the indoor 3rd floor. If I was the servers, I would've felt that we were a pain since it was a pain to move everything upstairs and made sure that the stuff we ordered came to the 3rd floor instead of the 2nd. Food wise, we ordered a LOT of stuff, a nice variety so we get to try some of everything. Everything was fresh and a must. 'Crab Bites' - I was kind of skeptical at first cause the waitress was like it is like a crab cake but in bite size. Most place, the crab cakes is just a bunch of flour but this place, it was huge pieces of crab meat. If you are too lazy to take the crab apart for the meat, this is the way to go cause it is literally almost all crab meat. 'Brooklyn Crab Royale' - great, it had some of everything, kind of got confused by the platter when it came because we weren't sure what was what but the waitress was able to tell us what was what. Other than the 2 that I mentioned, we ordered other stuff too but if I continue to write, this review will end up looking like a book. Drink wise, I never and had always hated root beer but this place got such yummy tasting root beer float, I guess it is finding the right root beer and combining it will good ice cream. When we left, the bill was $300ish but we did ordered a LOT of stuff for 5 people and we were all really stuffed, such a bargain for the quality and amount of food we had. Throughout the entire dining experience, the staffs were all really nice, and along with the manager there, they kept checking to see if everything was ok and we had a bit of small talk, which was a nice experience. And when we left, the manager wasn't there but on our way out, he popped out of nowhere and went after us on our way out just to thank us for the business and that he hoped we enjoyed the food and to see us again. Thumbs up: This place is awesome if you're looking for a place to hang out with a big group of friends, be outside, play games, and have some drinks. Thumbs up: Watermelon margarita. Yum. Thumbs down: It's an absolute pain to get to from Manhattan so you really need to be invested in going and spending some time there. Thumbs down: The food is fine, but not great, and very expensive for what you get. A tiny (and I mean tiny) crab roll is $15 and is just meh. Took the parents out to lunch. The view and service deserves 5 stars! But Karl... Why the 2 stars, you ask.... We ordered half a dozen crabs... The seafood for 2 (lobster, snow crabs, king crabs) and mussels and scallops. The food was mediocre and especially overpriced since the food was so... Blah... Maybe it was out of season... I came here this past Saturday on a citi bike ride adventure through Brooklyn. My travel partner and I had worked up an appetite and wanted something nearby and this was perfect. I loved the summertime feel of this place and that it's open year round. It has that wonderful, laid-back, New England/Cape Cod kind of thing going for it. I had the fish and chips, which was pretty quality, but definitely on the heavier side. I'll definitely be back. This is a great spot for catching up and hanging out with friends. They have some oyster event later next month that I definitely want to come back for. read more

When we arrived around 9 PM we were told it would be a 1.5 hour wait for dinner. We had drinks and a seafood platter at the bar while we waited. 45 minutes later we were seated at our dinner table upstairs. The two of us ordered, and while my food arrived at our table in about 30 minutes, our waitress returned at the 45 minute mark to tell us they were out of what my partner ordered. I would like to cut them slack as this is their first weekend open, but they made no attempt to make up for the screw up. This was no soft opening, and our food was not cheap. what he/she said. horribly run, 3 hour long wait. empty tables everywhere. rude hostess staff. and food was mediocre (crabs are tiny and overpriced, but clams were very good.) i give it one star because when we finally simply stole (yes, we stole one since about 1/2 were empty) a table, our waiter was amazing. I really wouldn't if I were you. A friend and I went here 2 weeks ago. We ordered drinks in the bar while we waited for a table and the bartender asked if I wanted to open a tab with my credit card. When it came time to pay for the drinks she told us it was cash only. Um...maybe you should tell people that when you ask for their credit card? Just a thought. There were lots of empty tables and yet it took almost 2 hours for us to be seated. When our name was finally called we were taken upstairs where there were even more empty seats. We ordered our overpriced food, they didn't bring us the potatoes, we ate, and it was meh. After we finished we asked what was for dessert and they told us that the kitchen was now closed. Seriously. That was it. Thanks for the money. No more food for you. Get out. This place is in serious need of a management overhaul. If it keeps going at this rate I give it a year tops. read more
