This is my third review of Brooklyn Reflexology, and yes, I still continue to go to Joe for pain and flexibility relief for my lower back, hip and knee problems. His massage therapies continue to help me not have to use prescription pain drugs and to date, have not had to have two recommended surgeries for my neck and lower back. Over the years, he still continually manages and re-evaluates my conditions, also keeping in mind my aging adult body changes. At Joe's recent recommendation, I decided to try Thai Yoga. He explained it would help with my flexibility, strength, and overall well being. After my first session a month ago, I woke up moving with greater ease than I had in a long long time. My second session this past weekend left me with so much pain relief, I could not believe it. My general well being, alertness, and flexibility have also improved a lot. I'm a massage addict (I get them every 1-2 weeks) and am used to working with some top notch therapists. When I wanted to make a last-minute appointment with someone in my hood, I emailed Joe and he was able to fit me in the next day. I had been dealing with some foot pain and general back soreness and had a 30min reflexology session and a 30min massage. Joe greeted me warmly and offered me some water. His office space is quiet and lovely, very homey. After I filled out the initial forms, he sat down with me for a few minutes to talk about my needs (something most therapists inquire about only when you're on the table in a perfunctory way). He started the massage by placing a warm washcloth on my back and massaging through it, which felt wonderful (kind of like a hot stone massage). Then he worked on my back and quickly identified my problem areas and used just the right pressure to ease the tension. He was going very deep but it wasn't painful at all and I liked that he used a lot of different techniques to get in the muscles. After the massage he moved on to the reflexology session, which was my first. It felt wonderful... my feet have never had so much love! Reflexology feels a lot like massage, but it's working all the little muscles and tendons on the foot and ankle. My foot pain subsided a lot in the few days since the session. After he was done, he sat down to tell me what he noticed during the massage (like where I was especially tight) and gave me some recommendations for how to prevent pain in those areas in the future. He was able to identify little things in the way I walk, stand and sit that were exacerbating the problems. I am a massage therapist so I know what a quality massage feels like. I came here for a half hour massage and half hour of reflexology. My left shoulder and mid-back had felt sore and knotted up. Joe sat with me for the intake to ask me what I wanted to address and then left to let me get on the table. The room itself is very warm and inviting. My massage was strong yet never so strong that I was wincing or tensing up (the opposite of what you want). He was intuitive on certain points and worked on the area I had the major complaint about. There is nothing more frustrating than telling someone where your pain lies and then they gloss over it. The reflexology was relaxing and a treat for my feet which I am on a lot and being an avid walker really is another reason they get sore; most new yorkers I think can relate. Joe is absolutely the best! I can attest to that because today I am pain free. First let me say that I have had multiple injuries in the past 2 years. I injured myself while doing kickboxing and another time while lifting weights; I've bruised my right bursa; it became very painful for me to function properly. And not long after that I developed sciatica which made things even worse. I was having this throbbing pain shooting from my lower back down to my leg. I couldn't stand or sit for too long; the only way, I get any relief is by walking and I couldn't walk forever. One of my co-workers referred me to a therapist; they tried chiropractic methods, acupuncture, massages, nerve testing, etc. Unfortunately after 6 months with them, there wasn't any improvement. Months later, I've injured my left knee, an ACL tear; it was swollen and I was in more pain. My quality of life was degenerating. I've decided to google for a more organic therapist. That's when I found Brooklyn Reflexology, a warm and very inviting office in the heart of Brooklyn, which is perfect for me because I dislike travelling to Manhattan for consultation. Joe is warm, respectful and attentive to his clients' needs. He offers a very personalized practice. He's very knowledgeable and takes the time to explain his work and method to me. He started working with me the day we met, a 90 minute session, therapy massage and reflexology; within a month, I no longer felt any pain on my right side. And I was able to go back to my regular activities. If I missed a session with Joe, my body doesn't function optimally. These past few weeks, I have been having lower back pain. As he explained to me, my tilted hipbones could be the source of my lower back problem. Joe decided to work on my glutes & psoas to open-up my hips; after the session, I immediately felt better. He is very knowledgeable and can tell you exactly what's going on in your body. His massages are very relaxing and he lets you choose what you want, for example, I sometimes get a combination of Swedish massage and reflexology. He makes you feel very comfortable during the massage and I decided after the first one to see him on a monthly basis. I also found that his rates are quite reasonable. I also feel so much better after one of his massages especially since I have back, shoulder and neck issues. After each session, Joel will assess your condition and offer helpful suggestions. I have had about a dozen sessions with Joe Azevedo to help me with a nerve condition which causes pain in some places and numbness in others. I am impressed with how knowledgable he is, and for example, I understood my own condition better after looking at some charts he shared with me - showing nerves in legs and feet. I actually recovered some sensation in my feet through intensive reflexology, which was amazing, and there is no doubt it was the reflexology that helped (as the improvement came after each treatment and was immediately obvious, and cumulative over several treatments). Joe's office is comfortable and pleasant, and very well located in Brooklyn Heights. I have had massage as well as reflexology at Brooklyn Reflexology, and both were excellent. Having experienced massages at a couple of the destination spas (such as one in Lenox, MA), I think Joe Azevedo is at least as good as any massage therapist there or anywhere else I have visited.
