The pizza is just as great at this Ridgewood offshoot as it is at the original Hackensack location of the Coal Burning Brick Oven Pizzeria......AND, unfortunately, the service is almost just as subpar as well. After visiting the Hackensack location recently, we decided to give the other location in Ridgewood a try as well since we loved the pizza so much at the original. We dropped in at around 5:15pm on a very quiet Memorial Day weekend Sunday evening and, as expected, the restaurant was also very, very quiet. We were only the 2nd group of diners for the evening, although it did get pretty busy as the evening wore on, including many pick up orders. We ordered a Caesar Salad to start along with the Combo Platter, which came with some fried ravioli, fried mozzarella, & chicken fingers. First, the Caesar Salad ---- we ordered it just to get some greens in our systems, but it was pretty much like the one served in Hackensack. The croutons in the salad were just cut up pieces of the bread that they include in the order as a side, but stale-tasting. As for the Combo Platter, that was decent, but the fried ravioli felt a bit empty, as in it felt like I was just eating a square piece of fried dough with no filling. The fried mozzarella and chicken fingers were decent, however, having some marinara sauce to dip them in DEFINITELY helped. For our entree, we shared a medium Tomato & Cheese pie with 1/2 Pepperoni. As I said, the reason we came here was because we absolutely loved the pie from the Hackensack location and didn't expect anything less here. The pizza pie came out piping hot, which was a great sign. Flavor-wise it was fantastic - the tang of the tomato sauce was delicious and the amount of cheese was perfect. Honestly, it was still one of the best pizzas I've EVERRRR had and I've had my fair share of pizza in NYC and New Haven. BUT...yes, there's a BUT here, where in Sam Hill was the pepperoni?!?! I encountered just a measly 9 pepperonis in total on the half of the pie that had it. Seriously, 9?!?! If I can count the number of pepperoni cups on the pizza, you better believe there is a problem...BIG problem. At the Hackensack location, we had the problem of having TOO MANY pepperoni cups, including 2 or 3 stacked one on top of the other. Anyhow, the pizza was still great, but more evenly spread pepperoni would have helped. Soooo, back to the service though. I'm not sure what it is about both locations, but the waiters really come off as rude - no "You're Welcomes", no "How is everything going? Can I get you anything?" Not much interaction at all. To be honest, not a whole lot of professionalism. At the Hackensack location, the waiters seem a bit more seasoned, but something still seems off, while at the Ridgewood location, we just didn't feel very welcome. Maybe we were being a bit sensitive, but having felt like we have dined everywhere, it felt easy identifying the "blah" service. Doubt it was an off night. Bottom line. The pizza is GREAT here and you definitely get your money's worth with the large, but don't come here thinking you're walking into the Cheers bar anytime soon. read more

First time eating here and my gosh it's delicious. I came in for lunch & I ordered the personal white pie and added peppers and onions. Truly,it's one of the best white pies I have had. They bake it with garlic in the white sauce and it adds a great taste to it. The dough itself is so fluffy, I haven't experienced a pizza dough this airy should I say? Most importantly my crust wasn't burned. Often times with coal brick oven pies, I find the crust burns. I also ordered a side of fries and they were nice & crispy and not an oily mess. This is one of my fave pizza spots and haven't wrote a review for this place yet. Parking can be hectic but Ridgewood in general is popping especially dinner time. There is no line usually but it can be busy if you are indoor dining. The fried calamari is really good and compared to the other Brooklyn pizzerias, it's the best one out of all of them. Plain cheese pizza (sold only by the pie) is good alone but I usually get pepperoni with it. Hot sausage topping is not bad as well. Came here when my partner and I were strolling through town during a recent visit. We were hoping to find somewhere not too crowded just as we were with my parents and COVID cases were on the rise again. We popped by here and thought some pizza sounded like the perfect afternoon treat. We ended up ordering a small cheese pizza to split. The order was ready fairly quickly, and were were both ready to dive in. This type of pizza is one of my favorites - super thin crust, really tasty sauce and nice fresh tasting mozzarella cheese. We ended up eating the whole pie, and I would've been happy to eat it again for dinner. I know NJ isn't enforcing masks (or wasn't when we were there), so the staff was unmasked. Came here last Saturday and have been here multiple times as I am local to the area. What sets this place apart is the fresh mozzarella cheese. The pizza was very good but the garlic bread takes the prize. It's shaped like a pizza and while the outside pieces aren't as filled with garlic, it was a different and welcomed approach. I will say one positive thing before trashing these guys: The pizza is good. What is wrong with Brooklyn Pizza - pretty much everything. There are so many good Italian restaurants and standard pizza places in the area that I not only recommend, but hope, you will not choose Brooklyn Pizza in Ridgewood. Read a few of the other reviews and my guess is that they will be similar. Here is what I found: 1. Above all - Service: The service is arrogant and very unfriendly. The woman who is the server was just horrible. I tried to work with it and being from the area at first gave her some room - maybe she was having a bad day, etc... No way, she is just real unfriendly and appears to want you to know that she niether likes her job or has any interest in the basic courtesies that a server provides their customer. I rarely under tip - I know it is the servers salary. However, to show how angry I was I gave her about 12 percent rather than my standard 20-22 percent. I handed it to her and hoped to see a response. Had she said something I might even have had empathy. She did not care one bit. On another occasion, though there was only one other occupied table, it took several minutes to get her attention. She clearly saw me waving at her as did the owner (or whoever the guy was who appeared to be in-charge). I was clearly not a priority. 2. The food - I already mentioned the pizza. We also order two pasta dishes. They were large, but horrible. I know good Italian pasta and being from the area can tell you exactly what a marinara sauce and Italian sausage should taste like. Yes, some are better than others, some use different ingredients or have a special twist to the balance. In my opinion, and the opinion of others at the table, the marinara sauce tastes like store bought jarred marinara. I am not exaggerating. I may be wrong but not convinced they are making their own and suspect the sauce is mass produced. Whatever the case, it is awful. 3. Drinks: I bring wine, but my daughter drinks coke. There is a note on the menu that warns all refills on soda will be charged. I have never heard of a restaurant charging for each refill of a soft drink. I mention it to the server, who just said "yeah" not bothering to give an explanation. Truly, this was a very bad experience. The dinner was terrible and the nasty server topped it off. Seriously, Brooklyn Pizza in Ridgewood is not where you want to eat. Horrible!!! read more

This place deserves 0 stars. The pizza is good, but if you dine in you are in for an outright insulting experience. We became regulars here for a few weeks, ignoring the awful service because the pizza was good. However, bad service adds up, and our last visit was the final straw for us. When the server gets to our table she leaves the plates and silverware in a pile in the center of the table, and plops down menus in a pile for us to hand out to ourselves. She doesn't say a word. Throughout the rest of the night, barely a peep from her was heard. We felt incredibly uncomfortable, as if we were a great inconvenience by spending money there. At the end of the night, we had an absolutely atrocious run in with the manager of the restaurant, I won't go into detail, but please read other reviews about being short changed and scammed. We usually go to the one in Hackensack but decided to give this location a try. We went around 6pm and service was awful. Our waitress was eating Dunkin Donuts, licking her fingers then serving food. While she was eating, she completely ignored our request to order. She gave SO MUCH attitude and kept going back to the corner table to eat while standing up. She had take out from other places, bags all over the table. It was bizarre and unprofessional. The manager, a middle-aged man, didn't seem bothered in the least by her behavior. The restaurant has a pretty dead vibe. People who work there seem miserable. The food, however, was pretty good. We got the house salad which was fine, 2.5 stars, and the Margherita pizza was good maybe 3 stars. I also like that it's BYOB (good wine shop around the corner next to coffee shop). But the overall experience was so bad that I would never go back and I would discourage others from going. read more

Pizza is a very personal thing! There are so many different varieties to choose from: thin crust, deep dish, New York vs Chicago, etc. That said, if you're a fan of brick oven pizza, this is your spot. As it says in the name, this is "Coal Burning Brick Oven" pizza. And yes, it is. If you love the taste of char on your pie, this is the joint for you. While their execution is terrific This is some delicious pizza! The staff is friendly, the space is your typical old time checkered table cloth pizza joint. Sit down and take out both taste great. That said, and this is totally personal, I'm probably more of a fan of a straightforward slice. I find that the char takes away from the simplicity of a pie and draws attention elsewhere. But each to his or her own. If brick oven is your jam, give this place a try! Note: I ordered a bunch of pies take out for a party at another spot in town. Full pies come in strange envelopes that don't necessarily travel so well. Thank goodness we didn't have far to go, otherwise the grease on the cheese would definitely have soaked through. Brooklyn's Coal Oven Pizza is on a shortlist of pizzeria's in this area that use coal brick ovens for large pizzas of the sub-$20 price range. The best part is that it's good. The pies are exceptionally thin, but the taste is anything but. The coal adds a dimension of flavor, and along with the cheese are the memorable things for me. Brooklyn's is cash only, and don't have an online order system, so it's slightly behind the times, but don't let that deter you from ordering a pie. Highly recommended. read more

The pizzas are good. That's the only thing I'll give them. The service is awful. They make a very good job in letting you know how big of an inconvenience to them you are by choosing their restaurant for dinner. As we sat down the server put a pile of plates, utensils and menus down on the edge of our table and walked away. Not saying a word, not asking if we want anything to drink, not even handing us the menus. We have overlooked this many times in favor of the food. Last time we were there however we drew the line. I'm not going to go into detail about what happened because it's so ridiculous it's almost unbelievable. If you're interested, please read other reviews about how this place try to short change and steal from you. The situation was handled horribly on the staff's part, they were being rude and the whole thing was completely unnecessary. We're sad to say that we're not going to go back to this place, but this is simply not how you treat returning customers. Or any customers for that matter. My family has been going to this restaurant for over 20 years. It is by far our favorite pizza place in Bergen County. The servers are incredibly nice and the food is wonderful. If you are looking for fancy, this is not the place for you. But, if you are looking for amazing pizza, this is it. Fresh mozzarella, fresh tomato sauce and very good toppings. Great neighborhood place with excellent coal-fired pizza, bring chianti and cash. This is backwards pizza: the cheese & crust are fired first then the sauce goes on *top*, now that I've had that style many times I love it that way. Reasonably priced and only about a dozen red-and-white-checked tables so you can look the pizzaiola in the eye if you really need something fast. We started with calamari, came with a side of red. For $9 I expected more rings, or maybe some tentacles, but no it was just average don't rush in for it. A Caesar salad was generous, easily enough for 2 people and only about $3 but the dressing was fairly generic. Great fresh hot breadsticks but no oil on the table, hm. Must agree with other yelpers, the pie is the star of the show. A large two-item was only $20, arrived with almost enough char on it, great pepperoni on top and our waiter even served everyone their first huge slice. Excellent pizza, not life changing but very very worth a visit. Next time I tell them to burn mine a little more, I like *char*. Yes, I geeked out over the oven and the huge pile of burning coal on one side, see pic :) I even asked -- much to my family's disgust -- what kind of coal they use. I believe that pizza is there trademark and most popular pie. While I was here everyone ordered a tomato and cheese pizza, I don't think I saw a table without one of those pies. It doesn't cover the whole pie - just select spots - in true margarita fashion. Sauce: 5/5. Sweet and savory red tomato sauce. The flavor really stood out. Crust: 3/5. The crust is really crispy, but the bottom part of the pizza is a little floppy. If you don't support your slice, it will fall down. Atmosphere: 5/5.
