Came here after my partner picked me up from the airport around 7 am. This is a small quaint place. Those surrounding us were very polite, including the cashier. Counter service is always awkward and inefficient at best, and you'll have to restrain yourself from just making your order yourself. Young untrained employees don't know their role, Orders are handwritten by one, collected by a second and rung up by a third team member, translated by a fourth. By the time your order is delivered by a 5th team member, they are asking the other 4 what the name on the note is and what the order is, because they can't read it. Oh, and that's just the first half of the order, the rest is still being made, duh. Breakfast sandwiches are really greasy, but the eggs are real. There's always unnecessary congestion at the counter. Every time I visit l I'm rushed to order and then wait about 10 minutes to pay, and then have to repeat what I ordered. There has to be a better way to do this. Instead of having 3 people taking orders, perhaps try more at the register. It's very uncomfortable and awkward. Just a suggestion from a frustrated customer. I was so looking forward to a late breakfast here. What a disappointment! Picked up some choc chip muffins, surprisingly they came in plastic packaging, almost seemed 'store bought'. Even more surprising, they were terrible! Coated in layers of sugar (so much to be inedible), very dense, with no flavor underneath all that sugar. They are like no muffin I've ever had, and even compared to factory made muffins are just awful. Well over $4 each and we had to throw them out since no one would eat them (my family is not picky, my mom eats anything to avoid wasting food). I've been a loyal patron here since I moved here in the 90's and while the employees have changed, the bagels are still fresh and yummy. I will say that their breakfast sandwiches are slowly going downhill as they seem to be a lot more sloppy and greasy than ever, but I still order them and still a fan. If it's busy, make sure to speak up as it gets pretty loud and my orders have been messed up too many times to recall. The plus side to this is that my now favorite mess up breakfast sandwich is a bacon egg and cheese on a dutch apple bagel. I really ordered a dutch apple bagel with cream cheese, but was pleasantly surprised at the sandwich I got after the shock wore off and I actually tried it. Brookside is perhaps my favorite bagel place in Connecticut. As a former New Yorker, I am a tough critic of bagels. Do CT bagels measure up to their NY counterparts? Quite frankly, no. But these are likely as close as you can get in this state. The bagels are soft, yet chewy and dense in all the ways a good bagel should be. They have a good selection of flavors, and a good selection of flavored cream cheese as well. My favorites here are the everything and sesame bagels, and the scallion cream cheese. As far as CT bagels go, these rank closer to five stars. However....the coffee is mediocre, and sometimes it can be painfully slow for even the simplest of orders - like an untoasted bagel with cream cheese, even though they have a handful of people behind the counter at any given time. Side note: don't order iced coffee....for some reason this takes forever and it's not worth it. I'll be back here many times, but will continue to opt to get my coffee elsewhere. read more
