On the way to Carlsbad Caverns and if you know the route, it's really hard to find affordable decent fare. There's nothingness around there. Only fast food joints and not too good ones at that. So did some digging on yelp n here and we felt like sandwiches. Something we can munch in the car on the drive there. Brown bag deli got good reviews so we went. Not inconvenient either. Not a huge detour. Just off the freeway. Yes, the place is a hole in the wall. Nothing to rave about. A bit daunting too. When we got there there were no cars. We almost didn't go in because it looked dead. No one was really in there either. To tell you the truth it kinda smelled bad and unclean. Its an old place. Restrooms weren't the best kept but not as bad as some Asian restaurants we have been to :) Menu is simple and on certain days they have certain specials. We opted for a huge turkey and a club. They are huge, family size subs. It took awhile for them to make, well it was only one guy at first then another trickled in. The bread was just lying out and there were some flies about. We were tentative. They recommended the mac salad side so we got that too. We saw they go to Sam's for their bread (the logo was on the counter where the bread was kept) but when asked they said they get it ordered specially. That didn't bother us because we think Sam's make great bread. Subs were simple but loaded. Made me want to open a sandwich shop too. Looked way too easy. Maybe we got there too early but a few people trickled in after that. We took our huge subs and left. Shared it in the car and they were good. Not wow but did their job filling our stomachs. Just wished the smell and cleanliness was better because I kept thinking are we gonna get sick eating this? Ingredients were fine, ok in freshness, meat good, bread ok. Mac salad I prefer really cold but this was bordering on warm and that worried me too. But we were ok. Tons of leftovers. Enjoyed the subs. Not entirely sure if we will return if we were ever in this area but glad that we tried. Sure beats the usual fast food or expensive Carlsbad diners. read more

i've lived years in philadelphia, where the sandwich culture is so established that any random sandwich shop on any block is likely to be about as top notch as you get anywhere else. the first bite of brown bag is a dismal failure. the quality of the bread is just so bad, it doesn't even feel like bread. its bulky yet flimsy, like if there was a wonder bread brand of supermarket 'french bread.' it's not always 'all about the bread,' as some enthusiasts clamor, but its not about anything else here at brown bag either. i had the turkey avo bacon, with the regular fixings. there was so much mayo on the sandwich, i couldn't taste anything else. i know the avo didn't help with the texture, but it was just gross and filled me with self-contempt for taking another bite. read more

Brown Bag is the kind of deli with that old school atmosphere that you just don't get outside of big cities, probably because its old. Or at least it feels like its been in that locale for a while. Its charming, the clutter adds to the authenticity IMHO. As a side not, I didn't encounter any awful smells that other reviews have reported. Now, a deli is only as good as the corned beef it offers, and I had a very satisfying Reuben here (I'm holding off to try the pastrami next time), very basic but tasty. Great deli place just outside of Ft. Bliss. Its basically the deli counter at a high quality grocery store turned into a restaurant. Blows Subway away in terms of quality of ingredients (and I like Subway on occasion). First, don't be afraid to get the mini because a regular is bigger than your average sandwich. The menu is fairly extensive but eventually I settled on the #22 (Capicolla, buffalo turkey, and chz) with everything on it plus jalapenos (just ask). I also got a bag of chips (jalapeno, and I gotta say their bags of chips definitely hold more volume than normal bags). I came in at 1040 so it was just before the lunch crowd hit and by 1120 the place was filling up. Ok, back to the sandwich. All of the meat, bread, and veggies were very fresh. My only complaint is that there might be a tad too much bread to innards ratio on the regular. The white bread is so fresh its almost a little too doughey. Next time (oh and there will be a next time) I will try their wheat and stick with the mini. But clearly a staple of the Ft. Bliss community. read more

It's a 8 minute drive and after ordering the chicken/ham/bacon and avocado sandwich, it took me less than 25 minutes to be back at work...man o man, this is really good! So fresh and tasty, the avocado tastes actually like avocado and not some sort of green paste you can find @ subway, bacon has a good texture and crunchiness,well balanced sandwich, loaded with flavor! had a potato salad as a side but, sandwich is so big I had to skip on it... I was working at Fort Bliss and one of the guys(who had been there awhile) took me here. It was the first sandwich shop I have ever seen with a liverwurst sandwich. It was awesome and huge. This is a great place to grab a deli sandwich for lunch. The menu has a wide selection and the portions are generous and reasonably priced. The dinning area is shabby and worn and the first impression left me with reservations as to the quality of the food. However after ordering the large turkey, avocado and bacon sandwich I quickly forgot the dated interior and happily devoured my tasty sandwich. I have eaten here several times and have never had an issue with the smell of the place. If you're hung up on a more modern atmosphere you may not be comfortable eating here; however if a great tasting sandwich for a reasonable price is your main concern skip the local chain deli restaurant and give the Brown Bag Deli a shot. read more

The portions are huge but it was nothing special and nothing I couldn't have made at home myself. The restaurant itself is absolutely disgusting and rundown. It smelled like musty rotting meat and so much of it appeared to be in disrepair with mismatching, ripped up chairs. Is there any staff that wipes down the tables? It wasn't busy at the time and all of the tables had sandwich leftovers spread all over them. It's obvious they don't take pride in cleanliness. How in the world does a place like this stay open? The health dept. would have a field day here. While everyone is preaching about how great this place is, I'm just thankful I didn't keel over from food poisoning or throw up while inside the deli from the awful smell. This place is a total dump once you walk in. It looks like it was stuck in 1983, the chairs are ripped, the walls are depressing, the service sucks. Its just a total shit hole. I give this place 2 stars because the subs are pretty good but be careful, I ordered a sub, drink and chips and the woman overcharged me at least $2 because she was confused. I tried to explain to her I ordered the special and we split the subs into two baskets and she just tried to rush me out of the way, take my money and deal with it. As long as I am in el paso I will avoid subway like the plague and go to brown bag hands down every time.
