This was a great meal. Stopped on the way to the airport at an odd time. We both had a spinach salad and added chicken. The spinach was really fresh and had lots of feta. The chicken was cooked on a grill and was both plentiful and tasty. It was so good we went for dessert. It was apple pie and ice cream except it was an apple tart with apple and pecan filling and ice cream with a bourbon glaze and then whipped cream. My cousin and I met at the Brown Barrel for lunch about a month or two ago. We sat inside due to cool weather. The staff sat us distanced from other patrons and wore masks. The server was helpful and friendly. She was available when we needed her. The food was delicious and served fresh. We ordered a mimosa and another bourbon based drink. Both were quite tasty. Stopped here on a whim. It's off the main drag in Midway, KY, you would miss it if you aren't looking for it. They have a patio and plenty of indoor seating. They serve beer, wine and spirits. The menu as just about everything anyone would want. They also have a special of the day. We had the fish and chips. Excellent batter and the fish was cooked/fried perfectly. Went on a Thursday evening for dinner, was greeted by some super friendly staff. Ordered a Bourdini from the Specialty Drinks menu to start, proseco, bourbon n peach schnapps w a cherry. Would have never thought of that mixture but it was great. Had the surf n turf w potatoes n green beans. Ate the whole thing! Steak was tender n delicious. For dessert we shared the bourbon pecan pie w ice cream..I shoulda got my own lol. It was amazing. Will definitely recommend to friends n will be back. This place is ok. It is nothing special. The prices are way too high. Over $5 for a pint and $10 for fried mushrooms is excessive. The group I was with all had burgers or some sort of sandwich. They all said it was not worth the money they paid. Their gimmick is they brand the bun with a BB on it but I do not see why the prices are that much for mediocre food. The good thing was the service. They were able to accommodate our party of 15 all at one table. The waitress was great. I think she got everyone's order correct and was very attentive to us. No one had to wait for a drink and she was always nearby checking on us to see if we needed anything else. I wish I remembered her name so I could mention her here. It was Saturday afternoon 10/5/19. Two of our group received their salads late (with the meal) and another two received their food after the rest of us were done eating, at which time they also brought all the checks.. Excellent food. We had the Brown Barrel appetizer and loved it. I had the fried Shrimp and my husband had Walleye fish. Both was very good.

Hubby and I were looking to try something new and ended up here. He's a big Hot Brown fan and usually tries them when available. I got the special, a cowboy ribeye, a baked potato and soup. I could see that the hot brown was small and didn't look great. He agreed it was at the bottom of all he's tried. My steak was okay, but nothing special. And the bill was way too high for only a passable meal. I was shocked at the price of their special. That's on me, I guess. Should've asked but I wouldn't have expected it to be more than most of the high dollar menu items. Everybody has an off day. Perhaps this was one for them. But I doubt I'll try it again. read more

I see how this joint fills a niche for Midway in providing a watering hole for townies, a take-out joint, and even a package store. I get the feeling that what the restaurant is doing best right now is appetizers and sandwiches. Our grouper fingers were good and the fries were tasty. The entrees we had were both lacking. It seemed like the recipes hadn't quite been perfected. The salmon dish and the shrimp and grits are the entrees I speak of and I wouldn't necessarily recommend either. The wines selections are also overpriced for what is offered. On the plus side, the management and server were very friendly and professional to the point that it made me want to bump this review up to 4 stars. I think this place has potential, not sure the entrees are going to make it. read more

My husband and I stopped here for takeout and we were not disappointed! He had the Cuban which he really enjoyed. The only cuban he has had that was better was from the authentic Cuban restaurant, and was some of the best pulled pork he has had in a long time. I had the fried catfish sandwich. The sweet potato waffle fries were surprisingly good, but the real surprise, and the item that will keep us coming back, was the macaroni and cheese.this was by far the best restaurant macaroni and cheese we have ever had. BOOM-CHACALAKA thats all I can say. I walked in to this establishment as an outsider - in Kentucky for the first time with little to no expectations. As our table sat we were greeted by our waitress who I can only describe as the absolute zenith of an employee. This woman was born to work face to face with customers, her energy filled the room and I found myself excited for every time she came back. "you would like the chicken piccata?" (which for reference is way more bang for your buck than the salmon alternative, would recommend chicken any day of the week) she repeated back to ensure my order would be correct. "BOOM-CHACALAKA amazing choice you WONT be disappointed" she exclaimed as she moved on to take the order of the next patron in my party. Every remark out of her mouth was a witty quip filled with wholehearted humor and a delightful smile. She was quick to refill drinks and always asking what she could do to make our experience more enjoyable. When I was finished with my meal she approached the table doing what I could only describe as limited version of Madonna's Vogue dance in the shape of a square around her head as she asked if anyone needed to-go boxes. This single moment has been the highlight of my trip into the state of Kentucky. My only regret is that I did not catch this gift of a woman's name. Please give this wonderful human being a raise, she is blonde and if you know her at all you can probably tell who she is just by reading this review (I'm looking at you managers). This place is getting better each time we visit. The service started out poor but we've been about 5 times and it's getting better and better. The food has been consistently great, and the atmosphere is nice too. I think once they get better training and timing in place they will start getting better reviews. I highly recommend the salmon BLT and any of the burger/grilled chicken sandwiches. The specials we've had have been really good too. We've had the beef skewers twice and one time they were really tough, but that's been the only issue with the food. I'm really looking forward to visiting when the weather warms up - and it's nice to have a place to grab a bottle of liquor in Midway too ;). read more

I ate here for the first time day before yesterday. I'm still dreaming about that lunch! I had a wedge salad which was perfect--crisp lettuce and yummy toppings. I also had the shrimp and grits. Now, I have a love/hate relationship with shrimp and grits. I love both, but not swimming in tomato juice or so spicy I can't eat it. This shrimp was wrapped in bacon, grilled, and served with a divine BBQ sauce. It was served over a fried grits cake. Oh my! I will have a dilemma on my next trip to the Brown Barrel; do I repeat the shrimp and grits, or do I order one of those other scrumptious sounding entrees on the menu? Hm..... read more

The worst place I've ever had. I ordered a item off the blind harries Ny Strip and the steak was such a badly cut of meat. The food came out and the first thing I had noticed is the steak was very jiggly then once I cut into the steak it was very tough even when I had ordered medium rare then after biting into the steak it was full of tendons and a lot of fat. After I had said something the guy there said I had ate most of it when I was really picking out tendons. After all it was still added to the bill and I had to Pay for it read more

This was our first time at the restaurant and probably will be our last. We had salads, the house salad was fine, but the Cesar Salad was full of black olives which seemed to be misplaced. Our entrees were not good at all. The chicken piccata which was watery and full of onions and over cooked pasta was flavorless except for the capers. The pecan crusted pork chops were soggy with an abundance of nearly raw sweet potato hash and an apple chutney that did not go well with the flavor profile. I am certain the chef did not taste what was sent to our table. We did not complain, but were not asked why we did not eat much of our meals. We did not get meals worth half of the $40 it cost. Midway's always been kind of a personal place for me, having gone to school there and growing up with family there, so I love that historic Midway has become this mecca for good food. Today we enjoyed a relaxed and uncomplicated Thanksgiving at Brown Barrel. We had reservations for 1pm, arrived a few minutes early and were taken straight to our table. All the standards were served buffet style, and plentiful. There wasn't anything any of us tried that we didn't think was delicious. Service was good, and as a matter of fact every person associated with Brown Barrel was friendly and seemed happy to be there. The dining room is part package store (as a southern gentleman calls it), selling beer, wine and bourbon, and also a comfortable place to dine. On top of that, they offer grab and go food options at the counter. Parking is easy. When dining in, they have several bourbons to order from the attached bar, Blind Harry's. I asked for Elmer T. Lee on the rocks, and even though that was on their list, they didn't have any, so I had Blanton instead. Their regular menu looks interesting, and I'd like to come by again and try the Hot Brown. The Brown Barrel is another great element added to the mix, that makes Midway worth a visit. read more
