As we now have a freshman at UWG, I suspect we will be in Carrollton a few times a year. This will mean frequenting the few eateries in the downtown that look good. The Brown Dog Eatery was on deck this weekend as we dropped off our kid. It was recommended and we are glad we went. It's a cool space off the downtown area and as we are at the Courtyard, very convenient. It's a nice and lively spot. Walk in and it is bouncing - you see a small bar with a good crowd and a great selection of drinks, beer....a very welcoming spot - and seems to be a local favorite as it looked full of locals. We showed up for dinner at 5 and it was packed. We were seated pretty quickly - got lucky as the crowd started gathering after we sat. Our server was Kat (KatServe G) and she was super nice and very service oriented. We appreciated her a great deal. The drink menu is extensive and on a hot day, a cocktail (Watermelon) and a beer were welcome. We didn't have apps but they looked good - nothing super light here - it's comfort food. Between the 6 of us, we had burgers, a sandwich and the fish. The burgers are the star of the show here - well prepared, good bun, great options and tasty - this is a go to place for a good burger - as good as you will get anywhere. The fries were really good as well. Other things we tried - hot dog (really good), shortrib grilled cheese and potato salad - delicious and a LOT of food. Fish tacos were grilled cod in a nice mix/sauce. Blackened grouper - I hate to say was the only dud. The sides were excellent - the fries and super good collards. The grouper - and let me just be honest was the same filet you get out of the bag at Costco, lightly seasoned and put under the broiler - nothing wrong with it, it was OK - but nothing great about it either. It wasn't blackened to any sense, and it just sat there. Maybe throw some blackening jus on it - a little moisture, a sauce of some kind.....would not get this again. I saw a snapper special -should have tried that. This was the only dud amongst a feast of great food, ambiance and service. When busy the wait for food will be - well - a wait, but it's a nice environment to kick back - that's not an issue So far, this is a great spot that we will visit again! Nice job read more

This was an absolutely wonderful dining experience! I am in town for some professional development for my job, and this place was recommended by a co-worker, and I am SO glad I took her suggestion to try this place out! I had the Anders Plank Salmon with macaroni and cheese, and collard greens. First, the fig sauce in the salmon was divine. It was a perfect bite especially with the really fatty salmon fillet. It was on the sweet side (which I like) but what really impressed me was that the sauce tasted like figs! It tasted like fig that had been picked at the peak of freshness, and then simmered slowly to make a great sauce. The salmon was perfectly cooked, and despite the sugar content of the sauce (even just the natural sugar from the fig) the sauce was not burnt at all, and it did not cause the salmon to be burnt which is something many other restaurants struggle to get right. The macaroni and cheese was delicious. It was creamy, and cheesy, and I even liked the little kick it had that I was not expecting. I am usually disappointed whenever I have macaroni and cheese, but I certainly was not disappointed tonight! The collard greens were okay. They cooked them with bacon, and they were a little sour, which can happen with collards, and they still had a little more crunch than I would have liked, but they were not offensive. The service was good, and prompt, and I had no complaints. I will definitely be returning when I am next in Carrollton. read more

As one of my usual go-tos for consistantly flavorful quality food, I ate dinner here on Fri evening at 6:30, after having eaten here often and never being diappointed. Unfortunately: the food was tasteless, some dishes undercooked and another over-cooked (at Brown Dog?). The smaller-portioned salmon- dry to the point of curled up edges. The whole green beans were too tough (not çrisp or crunchy - tough & stringy to chew.) Geechy Grits, though creamy, were flavorless. I would hesitate to complain with this one time of complete disappointment, but my friend with me had been a little skeptable, saying his experiences off and on had been less than mediocre in the past several months. I love Brown Dog! The food is wonderful, and they support many local places, such as Printers Ale! If you decide to eat here, you have to try the Duck Fat Fries app, but it is large enough to order as a meal. I decided on the Mac'Intosh Sandwich which has pulled meat, and macaroni! In a sandwich! And it was so yummy I finished my whole plate despite the large portion. The potato salad that I chose for my side was also very tasty. We also did Not have to wait very long to eat. I have no complaints! The bar here is fully stocked and they have a delicious Mojito. Both the regular mojito and the berry one are arguably the best in Carrollton. The bartender, Ryan, also came over and checked on us personally even though we were not his table and made sure we were enjoying our experience, and our waitress Jax was wonderful! We stopped in on our way to visit family in SC, and hubby enjoyed it so much that he wanted to stop again on our way back home. On our return visit, hubby got the Brown Dog House Burger, no bun, with a side salad. I had the Fig Pig on gluten-free bread, with a side of collards, and the granddaughter had the Fried Green Tomatoes. Hubby ate every bite of his food, so he clearly enjoyed it. The pork in my Pig was not quite as tender or flavorful as I might have wished, and the pork was cut in large chunks, but the sandwich as a whole was fine. I ate all of the collards, but they were not among my top-rated collards. The granddaughter felt that the sweet sauces took away from both the expected crispness of the Fried Green Tomatoes, and the flavor. She left one on the plate, and if she orders them again, she will order without the sauces. What you most need to know is that we would definitely return to Brown Dog. I have eaten here on numerous occasions over the years and attribute so many good memories to this place. Plenty of options and unique dishes to suit anyone's taste! I love that they locally source many of their ingredients and have such helpful staff-- communication is excellent. The restaurant is cozy and has great atmosphere for brunch and dinner! I especially like the back room where seating is a bit more relaxed. This is a favorite little pub in Carrolllton, GA. The food is good and definitely not like a chain restaurant. There are unique foods and specialty cocktails. Yes! This place is great! All of their food is fresh and delicious! On this occasion I got the Tex-Mex chipotle chicken salad (see pic) and it was nothing short of fantastic! The food looked awesome but it tasted a little off. The service was good. The restaurant was clean and packed but the Mac n cheese had a strange burnt taste but it did say it had a flavor added to it but it tasted bitter. My daughter wouldn't eat hers ( they don't offer kids menus so I just got her a side of fries and Mac n cheese). My meal was ok. It was brie apples Turkey and apple butter. It didn't have much brie on it and a lot of Turkey but the flavor was good. My husband got the salmon fried green tomato BLT as recommended by the server. It was and odd combo. Fried green tomato was really good but the rest was not good together but apart would of been delicious. Banana pudding was ok, it had moon pie in it instead of wafers and I really thought it would be good but it was really rich. In town visiting and found this gem! Staff were friendly and very attentive, considering it was a Saturday night and they were pretty busy (as expected). The building is nice, it's location is great. Plenty of parking. I walked in and I sat at the bar since it was just me. The bartender was my waiter and he was nice.
