Omgness, I ordered a nearly $80 caramel cake for my Christmas party, and it was the WORST cake I've ever had. Where do I even begin? First off, the caramel was a disaster- hard, overly sweet, and just plain awful. It reminded me of Goetze's Old Fashioned Caramel Creams Candy, with the same overly sweet cream-like filling, except it was inside the cake .--It wasn't smooth or rich; instead, it had the texture of cheap Goetze's Old Fashioned Caramel Creams, but worse. Absolutely nauseating! The cake itself was equally terrible. It was dry, dense, and tasted like cornbread--not a hint of the moist, fluffy texture you expect from a cake. This was hands-down the grossest cake I've ever had. It was dry cornbread with hard overly sweetened caramel. I honestly don't understand how this place has a 4.4-star rating--there's no way it deserves it. For the price I paid, I could have bought a store-bought cake and had better results. No one at my party liked this cake--not one person. It was the only dessert leftover. If I had known, I would have spent the money on 10 Pookie Crack Cakes instead. Their caramel is smooth, soft, and rich, and their cakes are always moist. In comparison, this cake's caramel was stiff, hard, and dry. For $80, I feel completely ripped off. I have been a long-time customer. Back when the strawberry cake had real strawberry specks and cream cheese in the frosting, serve in huge slices in a Styrofoam container. It was just delicious and addicting. For any special occasion, Brown Sugar would be...my go-to bakery. However, I'm disappointed with my last order. I placed an online order for a 4 layer chocolate cake for my daughter's birthday. Unfortunately, my husband fell ill... and picking up a cake was the last thing on my mind. So, plans were postponed, and I had to ask my daughter to pick up her own cake. It was definitely my fault that it was 3 days late. Nevertheless, when she got to the bakery... she was informed the cake was disposed of... since there was no timely pickup (no reminders or calls received). Life happens, and we have to show consumers who patronize our businesses ... some empathy. Maybe a credit, refund, or something. Not to just ...suckup the $65 loss. The establishment was clean I'll give them that but the attitudes from the cashier to the assosiate assisting us with our order were atrocious . This one star rating is a sad truth. I spent $45 for a 2 layer Carmel cake for my Godmother's birthday. I was in Chicago several years ago when tried their caramel cup cake at Navy Pier. It was so good I went back for another. They were sold out of the cup cakes so I bought a slice of the caramel cake it was delicious. I was actually at Manny's Deli when dear, sweet Shay gave me the most luscious caramel cupcake! The yellow cake was so incredibly light and fluffy and that caramel frosting was to die for! I can't wait to try more goodies from this wonderful bakery. I somehow missed their pop-up spot and had chosen Manny's cheesecake going thru the line, so a trip to 328 E. 75th Street will definitely be in the works! I have not been into baked goods and have lost my sweet tooth, but I wanted to check out Brown Sugar Bakery. And I do not regret it one bit. I may have actually gotten my sweet tooth back. Their girls working there were helpful and got me in and out. I purchased a caramel cake slice and a chocolate caramel slice, and I also received a free cupcake with a yelp check in! I haven't tried the cupcake yet, but the caramel cake was the best! The chocolate caramel was too sweet and felt that the chocolate over powered the caramel so I wasn't able to taste any of it. But the caramel slice was phenomenal. He's very sweet, but balances out with the moist, layered with caramel as well cake. Truly an exceptional, perfectly executed cake. This place is top notch. I've been once before with a friend who lives in the area. She raved about the place, rightfully so. And even though it is a neighborhood shop people come from all over Chicago. This time we drove over 30 minutes from the west side to pick up a cupcake order for a family party. My sister-in-law has high standards and this was her first/only choice. We picked up two dozen cupcakes ($30.99 per) and couldn't resist a single serving banana pudding ($5.00) while we were in store; great homemade taste. The cupcakes were moist and delicious. The cupcakes are best if purchased in the morning and consumed same day. I purchased cupcakes for a Juneteenth party and picked up in the afternoon. They were dry tasting and the frosting had a chalky taste to it. I ordered 24 cupcakes and expected higher quality. I went back months later and purchased a chocolate cake slice from the bakery and it was better than the cupcakes. The place is small, causing the line to go out the door and you feel rushed if you are a newbie. Staff always seems annoyed and tend to rush you to pick something. Check out the website before going. I've always wanted to come check out Brown Sugar Bakery after seeing them featured on Black People Eats a few times, so when my friend said she wanted to come I was like I'm down. She also works down the street at the hospital, so I was able to meet up with her during her lunch break. She had a slice of caramel cake, and I ordered a chocolate and a red velvet. We both agreed that the cake is a bit sweeter than what we're used to. Everything looked delicious, the slices are very generous and rich, and I ended up giving the red velvet slice to my partner which they appreciate and loved. They normally finish everything in one setting, and this cake definitely wasn't because it's rich. They also provided us with utensils which made it easier for my friend and I to share our slices with one another. There's limited street parking here, and it's definitely first come first serve. It being sweeter than what I'm used to is not a deal breaker, but I would love to see them come out with something either sugar free, less sweet etc for folks who are diabetic like my parents, for example -- it'll allow for more customers to support and see what the hype is all about and also make it more inclusive where anyone can enjoy dessert. Very, very impressed with this bakery. Their cakes - whole and per slice - are insanely big but more importantly, very good and moist! I typically don't like caramel, but their caramel cake is astonishingly good. I also can confirm that their very rich turtle cheesecake and banana pudding are excellent. I pre-ordered a cake for Thanksgiving and experienced the worst customer service in my life. I called to confirm my order, only to be hung up on a few times. When a lady finally answered the phone, she said they were closed for business and hung up on me. They were in fact not closed as they were posting pics and videos on the Instagram (I called during the business hours shown on their website). When I went to pick up my cake, apparently they told me that the pick up date was incorrect, even though I showed up on the day and time I selected on the online form. They ended up making extra cakes and was able to give me my order but were extremely rude and made me feel like they were doing me a favor even though they messed up. It was the worst experience I've had ordering from a Black-owned business. This will be the last time I order from them and I will also be telling my network to not support their business. I was handed task of dessert for Christmas Eve dinner. In our family, we do the polish Wigilia which some members refer to as the monochrome beige dinner. I knew I would get the caramel 4 layer cake which was a the perfect finish to our dinner of mushroom borscht, peirogies, haddock and sauerkraut/lentils. When I arrive to pick up the cakes, the people working came to say hello. Due to COVID, I did not go into the shop, but since I parked around the corner, they helped carry the large cakes to my car. Got a slice each of the lemon pound and double chocolate cake and while it wasn't dry, the texture was that of cornbread with a sweet heavy taste. The chocolate frosting tasted more homemade than the lemon but overall, still not worth it. Cake should be so moist and flavorful, it should make you want more. It shouldn't make you desperate to be finished to bring some value to the overpriced $7 per slice you paid which didn't deliver. Do yourself a favor, make your own cake. read more

I was unfamiliar with this bakery, but my sister was, and after going to the business I was extremely impressed with the staff, customer service, and the bustling activity in the establishment! I wish there was a similar one in the Bay Area in California! My mother's favorite is Coconut Pineapple cake and it didn't disappoint.
