    Slice of caramel cake
    Deidre L.

The caramel cake is divine! It reminds me of the cake that my mother-in-law makes. The cake is moist and delicious. Not too sweet given the sweetness of the caramel frosting. All I can say ia yum!

Looking for some birthday cake and since I was in Hyde Park, I decided to look around down here. I'm glad I stopped by, because I love to support small businesses and especially businesses owned by minoritized folks. They have a small selection of cake slices and cupcakes; I got the double chocolate, caramel, and a chocolate porgy and bess cupcake. I can't comment on the cupcake because it's still waiting to be eaten, but the cake was not bad. This may have been made with a decorator's buttercream or something similar--so perhaps using shortening--and I prefer a true buttercream made of butter that's a little fluffier and lighter. The birthday boy got the caramel and he said it was delicious! There's street parking only around here but it's not terribly hard to find in this location, I don't think.

Happen to be in this Chicago neighborhood on the same day that the owner annouces she is building a candy factory. In tribute, I stopped by and grabbed some treats. Owner Stephanie Hart has transformed her new manufacturing facility to expand Brown Sugar Bakery-Chicago it the ONLY Black woman-owned chocolate manufacturer in the US. Couldn't be happier to celebrate her recipe to success today and partake in some goodies. On this occasion, I stuck to cupcakes so we could try a few versions. Classic Carmel, Red Velvet and Chocolate/Carmel Cupcake. Hands down that carmel is fabulous. 5 out of 5 stars!!! I would rate the vanilla cake 4 out of 5. I felt the cake was drier than I would of expected but still good just not great. The red velvet cupcake was delicious and very moist. On my next visit will try the Obama cake. There was just too many options so I stuck to cupcakes. Next time will try the pies, bread pudding and slice of cake. This bakery is known for holiday orders so if you want one...order now. Every year that I have lived here they sell out.

I stopped in and grabbed a single caramel cupcake--it instantly reminded me of home! The portion size and frosting were just right. My inner chubby kid definitely wanted two. Can't wait to come back for more!

I was visiting my man in Chi Town and he took me to Brown Sugar Bakery and what a wonderful experience! The best butter cookies this Cali gurrl ever had! The cupcake was delicious too but when I visit in a few eeeks I'm definitely trying the Carmel cupcake. Great customer service and very helpful because there's so much many delicious pastries to make a decision- I wanted them all...lol. The owner was very sweet! The ambiance gave me that old school feel and sense of community that I grew up in Los Angeles - felt at home. Very immaculate. I'll be back in two weeks and looking forward the Carmel cupcake... Anyone visiting from out of state you have to treat yourself to some Brown Sugar. Happy Yelping!

A line of cars waiting for the opening

NOTE: the website says the place opens at 11, but it opens at 12!' On a chilly Sunday morning in the beginning of December, I came an hour early by accident, and the line was already forming from church goers and pastry enthusiasts. I got: the caramel, carrot cake, German chocolate cake, lemon cake, rainbow sherbet cupcake, red velvet cupcake, caramel cupcake, turtle cheesecake! Tip: This is not a place to do work. There is no seating. You come in, buy, and leave. That's it! This place is close to great savory spots like Lem's Bar-B-Q, which also doesn't have seating. Bring a car if you don't live nearby. The most popular cake is caramel! Vice-President Kamala Harris had the German Chocolate. https://civicengagement.uchicago.edu/news/small-business-spotlight-brown-sugar-bakery-hits-the-sweet-spot-between-homey-and-gourmet#

The owner is delightful, the cakes are delicious the atmosphere is amazing. Everyone comes from near and far to get her delightful treats. It's fun to open my door in the early morning and smell the delicious baked goods in the air. I'm so happy for her and for us. We love us some Brown Sugar and you will too.

I've been a customer of almost 10 years and have been obsessed since they first opened their doors at a different location. I literally live an hour away without traffic and even longer with traffic, but I make sure to stop by or send someone else to get it for me at least once a month or more. I love the amazing cakes that are so delicious and unique but on top of that, it is Asian owned, LGBTQ supporting, etc. A lot has changed since their little storefront with no seating. The bakery is now a full on cafe and I'm so happy to see how much they've grown and how successful they are. And while it is glorious, I will say I miss the sweet neighborhood charm and great customer service it used to have. Getting in touch with the bakery through phone or text can be tough and to be honest, sometimes one of the people working there is kind of...very mean. It had me questioning if I should keep coming back. I just love this bakery so much though and being raised by parents that had a small food business, I can't help but want to support. I had a particularly difficult last minute request for the bakery a few weeks ago and I was reminded why this place is so great. It had been YEARS since I made this specific request, which was an order for a slice of cake for every flavor and a cupcake for every flavor. This is a BIG and time consuming request, especially if it's last minute. Unfortunately I come to the city whenever the traffic isn't atrocious, so it's always last minute. Dom absolutely pulled through though. Even though there were other employees there (I saw two others but one disappeared and then another male was kind of walking around the cafe and such), Dom took this giant request and fulfilled it himself. The other gentleman (not the mean person previously mentioned) was actually who I made the request to, but he told Dom to do it. I was kind of confused why they didn't do it together but idk, maybe the other guy isn't allowed to handle food? Who knows. Regardless, this request obviously took a long time and the line was getting longer; people were getting a little restless but Dom stayed calm but was swift. I swear he was moving faster than most people in the industry could with a cake knife like that. He was not impatient or rude to me at all. He was just there to do his job as fast and well as possible. It's so rare to see that type of work ethic. He is also so obviously proud of the bakery and the food they serve which makes you feel good about being a patron there. So although I continue to have an unpleasant experience with one particular employee there, Dom keeps my love for this bakery alive. He reminds me of what this bakery was like when they first opened their doors. I hope Dom is cherished there and I bet he is considering his work ethic. I will continue to support this bakery and I recommend everyone else to support as well. It may not be that small little shop anymore but Dom is a reminder of the heart of the place.

Don't fret! But waiting 2 hours in line for this on a weekday morning and knowing this spot has 2 michelin stars, i had higher expectations - i wouldn't say anything is particularly memorable and nothing was perfect except for the ube & huckleberry basque cake; the dishes were either lacking in flavor or texture - service was quick and welcoming - very homey cozy ambiance with tons of natural lighting; i felt so comfortable dining here - the most surprising part is this place being so hyped up when anything in la & ny could easily taste better and more authentic IG: @nom.noms.only

Let me tell you, it was all I hoped it could be and more. The storefront was pretty small with a few tables- between the size, hours, and popularity (they were only open a few days a week and closed at 2pm), I suspected that the shop sold out often. I went on a weekday and there was still a good selection of pastries left around 11am. The staff was super nice and helpful as I struggled to make a decision. They shared that the strawberry milk croissant was their bestseller, so I opted for that. It was filled with fresh strawberry mascarpone and fresh strawberry puree. Despite the croissant's decadent appearance, it was not at all too sweet. I'm not typically the biggest croissant fan (I know, I know, no one is perfect) but this pastry blew me away. The filling was super generous without overpowering the delicate dough, which was baked to crispy perfection.
