BRU- the most incredible costumer service, and great smoothies. There was a misunderstanding with the online price of the smoothie vs in store. I wrote a review while sitting in the shop, and during my time here the man at the register came up to me during my time and apologized, gave me a refund, and set everything right. Decent place to lounge (chill vibe with plenty of seating) for a coffee and a crepe but the service is pretty slow. 4 guys behind the counter and maybe 6-7 customers inside and it still took them a GOOD while to make 1 crepe (latte didn't take as long). This place is one of the most wonderful coffee shops in Chicago. Not only does it fulfill the need for coffee and pastries, but it has a lovely selection of delicious smoothies (healthy ones!) and meals, including vegan options. I had one of their mango/banana/strawberry smoothies and it filled me up and was delicious. It's a quick trip off the Damen blue line, and I would do everything in my power to use a day off to visit Brü again! The staff (maybe management) and ambiance of this coffee shop make it a huge a huge waste of space in prime wicker real estate. First, the staff/management. The staff is nice enough and seem fine, but they have no idea what they are doing, especially food wise. When I took my order, the cashier took my order down on a post-it note, an ominous sign of what was about to happen. I ordered a sandwich with two cheese options and two side options. He did did not ask about either, and I never got a side. Despite only around 6 people in the place and three on staff, it took about 15 minutes to make a simple sandwich. The cook had to repeatedly look at the board to remind himself what the ingredients were. Sloppy. Second, the ambiance. Read: none. They have tables and outlets, but it's super spread out, a bit tacky and half finished. No idea what they are going for. The tables were dirty. Maybe the coffee is good? My sandwich was ok. Although I'm normally a black coffee or chai latte person, Bru's list of unique drinks appealed to me, in particular the white chocolate lavender mocha latte. There was very little notes of lavender in the drink, but it was very rich and a real treat. I was serenaded by current love songs that sounded like they were from a top hits track list. The cafe had a great open layout, a couple grandma couches, lots of outlets and a variety of bar, lounge, desk, and bench seating. So much potential, but the service is just abhorrent. My friend went to use the bathroom and came out to tell the staff there was no soap. The response "that's really really weird". Really? It's weird your bathroom ran out of soap??? Unless you just filled it up that's bound to happen at some point. It took them 10-15 minutes to replace the soap in the bathroom. Next the ordering process. So there was a line to order for maybe 10 minutes while two staff members totally ignored the people in line and made drinks. I get you need to make drinks, but if there are two of you maybe one should take orders while the other makes drinks. They finally take our orders. My coffee takes maybe 5 minutes. Fine. My friend's tea seriously took 25 minutes. Look this place is cute. The coffee is good, but it just is not at all worth the horrific service. I'm all for supporting local business, but I'd go to Starbucks 1000 times over this place. read more

I end up working remotely a couple times each week and Bru is one of my favorite places to go post up for a few hours. Everyone who works there is really pleasant and talkative. There's also usually a pretty legit Spotify playlist going so I rarely need to have my headphones in. The food and coffee are good and affordable, lots of choices, especially when it comes to juice and smoothies. If you're working on something like I usually am, there's plenty of room to spread out from the bar, to couches and tables to a back room where they sometimes hold events (usually it's empty so you can just sit back there and have some peace and quiet). Last summer Bru was really the only coffee shop in Wicker Park that stayed open late (besides Wormhole, which only stays open until 11:00pm). Now they pretty consistently close at 8:00pm, which kind of bums me out. I'm hoping the late hours return when the nice weather does too. My recommendations for food and drink are the Watermelon smoothie, Snappy Pear Juice and Wicker Park Club. read more

Pretty sure this place just opened up a couple months ago. But it already has reason to be my new Wicker Park hangs. Coffee, great food selection (which isn't limited to sweets or side orders), and excellent seating space. They even have a backroom setup for projector presentations or conferences. If you need to print something, they even have a printer here for you (for a little $). They don't have a bottomless cup of Joe option, which is unfortunate for the café caveman, but the clean vibes make up for it. I just wish they'd invest in better quality seats, instead of the metal self-assembly chairs they probably bought at ikea. But overall, definitely a new favorite of mine to visit when I need to get stuff done in this neighborhood. read more

Holy crap, the apple cider. While the wait here is longer than your average coffee shop, it's only because the baristas make everything from scratch before your very eyes. We ducked in to warm up one night last week while Christmas shopping. After my first hot apple cider was gone, I got another for the road. It was delicious. This place was amazing. I first checked in and received a 20% off for a drink. This was a great bonus. The sever even gave me a free macaroon. Let me tell you the coconut macaroon was amazing. My friends got every flavor of the homemade macaroon and they were gone before I got back to the table from ordering. They said they were all amazing but their favorite was the pistachio. The staff was extremely pleasant and informative with their products and surrounding area. Staff also was concerned with where we were from and the reason for the visit. She also informed us that the store has only been open 4 months and have added a kitchen, juice bar & smoothie bar, and are adding a tea haven shortly. The tea haven includes personal cast iron teapots for the table. Bru also has rotating local artists, five of which were on display with a whole art gallery in the back. The whole place is covered with amazing art. The music in the place was great and there is plenty of seating for any type of personality. Couches, highboys, leather seats with table, and bar table. The coffee was not as good as I thought it would be. Next time I will probably get a tea. My wife said the smoothies were not as good as they could have been. She said they probably don't use Fresh fruit and instead used syrups or boxed nectars. read more

I had been here a few times for coffee or hot chocolate in the past and always enjoyed my experience enough. Its a convenient location, and although not the coziest atmosphere, there is always seating available and you don't feel like your right on top of other people or hovering for a table. The other day I needed to grab a quick bite and thought, since I had been previously satisfied, I'd try their sandwiches. Delving into their food options is a big mistake. I was on a time crunch and ended up waiting for at least 30 minutes for two sandwiches to-go. I practically finished my drink while standing at the counter well before my food order was done. They were packaged in oversized takeout containers that i couldn't put in my backpack and they had no bags to offer except, in panicked desperation, the barista said "all we have is giant trash bags". Although I appreciate her attempt, thats a little ridiculous. I got on the train carrying two giant takeout boxes and a coffee cup that were slipping and sliding all over the place and when I finally made it home i ended up throwing out the majority of both sandwiches because they were disgusting. Their drinks are good and its a decent place to go if you want a little space, relative quiet and sure shot at an open table, but the service is so-so and DEFINITELY avoid the food. Also, make sure you have time to spare because you'll wait a while for whatever you order. I must add, the owner reached out after my review which means a lot. Atmosphere is nice but the coffee and service suck. The barista was on his phone while making the drinks. Ordered the chai latte, it was bland af. I told the barista that something was wrong with it. He looked at me weird, then tasted the stock mix, and then agreed with me. While he was staring at me, wondering what he should do, I suggested that I get something else. So he made me a really bland cappuccino, in the process he used his dirty hands to level out the coffee grounds. Overall, the service was really weird and the drinks were terrible. We got an iced latte (delicious), Ocean Blue smoothie bowl (delicious) and a Nutella crepe - the crepe took 30 minutes to make and came out stone cold. They say that's how crepes are meant to be served but that's not true. Warm or room temp is the norm. This was actually cold to the touch. And they were a little haughty about it. All the juices I've tried have been super tasty, but they're so sweet and if I drink too much of it I feel pretty sick. If you like ginger, get the Wicker. I was pretty excited to hit up Bru after seeing how vegan-friendly and "healthy" their products are. I went in after a morning run so I could maximize on the protein of The Brown Line. I was immediately put off by the Styrofoam cups for drinking water at the end of the bar. I assume that if you advertise yourself as vegan friendly, all natural, organic, and offer yoga events on the side...then it would holistically embrace a positive living experience with all their products. Not so. After ordering The Brown Line, I kept a close eye on the barista making it. In the menu, it states "vanilla protein" as one of the additives. I saw him immediately go for whey protein and was able to catch him in time to request the vegan protein. My bad for not asking if the vanilla protein was vegan...but why wouldn't the vegan option just be the go-to? I had recalled seeing an image on Bru's instagram and website a strategic product placement of Justin's peanut butter (all natural) which I was pretty excited about because it's a healthy brand. Then I saw the barista pull out a massive container of JIF (entirely not natural with sugar added) and nearly died. And I know I'm going into full yuppie mode here...but don't advertise yourself as a healthy and organic establishment and have a vat of JIF ready for serving. read more

I wanted to buy a small cup of tea but I forgot my wallet in my car and i only had Apple Pay in my phone. They don't take Apple Pay but the woman was so nice even though i didn't have any money she gave me a hot tea for free anyways! That made my day! She was very very nice! I'm a venture-er of sorts and love to randomly walk into shops that look cool. That being said, this is a cool looking place. It's not an over-extravagant place like others in Wicker Park, but it has it's own vibe, which I like. It's a very chill place to read a book or write, or whatever you do. However, the service wasn't all there. I like to be welcomed with at least a "Hey! How are you today?", but I wasn't getting that here. I got a coffee and one of the pastries they had. Both were good and I would definitely go again for them. I'll be going back to get a sandwich, but not soon. read more

Great place to study. Usually pretty empty and plenty of seats are open. Good alternative to the perpetually busy Wormhole. Baristas play great music! Also, you get 15% off if you live or work in the area. I've only had the hot chocolate and hot coffee here; both were good. The most recent time I was there, I noticed they added a printer. Cute/fun coffee shop on Milwaukee, was looking for something different (not a Starbucks) and I definitely found it! The place was nice and big so you weren't forced to sit alongside strangers while enjoying your coffee. A teammate and I chose this spot to hunker down and get some work done. I had the cinnamon roll latte. It was excellent. We also stayed for lunch and tea. I had the breakfast crepe for lunch. It was really good! The crepe was perfectly cooked and I appreciated the layering of egg, avocado, and cheese. Delicious! I also got the lemon vanilla white tea. The tea pot was as lovely as the tea. We were there for a good portion of the day as other people came and went. The staff were friendly to us and the service was good. I liked the atmosphere and the different seating options- couch, high boy, table. The only drawback for me is that it's a bit on the pricey side. And the draft from the door opening.
