You know, I really have liked this place for many years now, however, my experience yesterday was enough to make me say "I'm done." As many of you who visit this restaurant know, the owner has an incredible memory as he recites your order back to you before you pay... CASH! (Note: If you read this review and still go, be advised this establishment only takes cash. I have seen way too many people get up to the register to order and throw the owner off his game when they hand him a credit card. Dude gets tense and tells you there is an ATM at the Citgo next door. Don't believe me? Try it.) Well, my wife ordered for us yesterday. (Note: My wife is never wrong.) The food was brought out and my biscuit (the only thing she ordered for me) did not have the egg on it as ordered. Keep in mind, several people have gone by now in line and have placed their orders. So, I stop the lady who brought my food and told her that the egg was left off my biscuit. No worries. She took the biscuit back and returned one minute later with egg on it and said "He said you did not order an egg for it. That will be $.75." WTF? Seriously? What happened to the customer is always right? So you're going to tell me that ten minutes pass by along with several customers and you can remember what I ordered, or rather, didn't order? Geez, I hope my $.75 keeps the lights on over at Bryant's. Hopefully the half packet of jelly I used doesn't put them out of business. Bottom line: I know the order was placed correctly (I heard it) but the owner takes too much pride in the way he receives the customer's order. Yes dude, your memory is impressive but even you are capable of making a mistake sometimes like yesterday morning. However, this time your arrogance has cost you our business. read more

I just love this place. I am a Breakfast Connoisseur...I love breakfast more than any other meal of the day. Bryant's is my church on sunday mornings. Speaking of sunday mornings, be a heathen like me and get there before the church folks get out. You'll thank me later when you see the line out the door as you sit at your table with your delicious eggs, sausage, coffee, and biscuits. Please don't come here expecting to be served hand and foot. Let's face it, it's on Summer Ave. You're not going to walk down a red carpet to get in the place. You might see a couple homeless people. This is a tough one for me due to a difficult lunch experience I had there today, so I'll do my best to give a well rounded report. Bryants and I go way back. When I lived in Memphis 25 years ago it was a regular stop for me to get their sublime biscuits draped in savory country ham. I must have been here 100 times in my first round of living in Memphis. I left for long time and upon my return I was pleased to see that Bryants had survived. My first morning back I went and got my usual biscuits with ham, or bacon, or sausage and eggs. It was just as good as I remembered. The long lines move quickly even when they loop the restaurant and trail out the door...do not be discouraged. They have the most incredible biscuits I have ever eaten. Today I was cruising around looking for a place to have lunch. It dawned on me that I have never eaten lunch at Bryants....this is where it all went wrong. Not that their food was bad, it wasn't, it was OK...but just listen. I wanted something beefy so I ordered the Philly Cheese steak. The cashier attempted to clarify if I wanted the Philly biscuit or the Philly cheese steak sandwich that came with lettuce and tomato. It was suddenly clear to me that this wasn't a Philly Cheese steak as no Philly comes with these things...ever. So I decide to order the lunch special "chicken fried steak" instead with a side of Lima beans and turnip greens. I took my first bite and it was chicken. I flagged the waitress down and explained that they accidentally made chicken fried chicken instead of the steak I ordered. She explained "No...that's steak". I said "no this is clearly chicken" she responded "Thats how we make our chicken fried steak". I'm sorry.....but chicken is chicken and steak is steak. How does a restaurant think they can call something one thing and just serve something else? I then went to the manager who also agreed...."yes, that chicken is our chicken fried steak"..in a way that conveyed that I was just stupid for expecting something else. I was baffled...I felt like I was in the twilight zone. Ok...whatever, apparently Bryant never learned about the different types of farm animals. This being said the Chicken Fried CHICKEN was ok. The Lima beans were passable, the greens were absolutely delicious and the biscuit made my toes curl and my eyes roll back in my head. So long story short....assume nothing here. Ask them to describe what it is you are ordering even if it seems obvious, with exception of the country ham and biscuits...they are exactly what you expect, incredible deliciousness. read more

Five stars for a not centrally located, where you order at a counter at a dive that only excepts cash? Yes. If you enjoy artery clogging, calorie packed southern food, there is simply no place better. On a recent trip to the home of the blues I was asked to meet a business associate here for breakfast. It took me 25 minutes to make it here from downtown Memphis. Upon arrival the first thing I noticed was the cast of characters in line. Of the 30 plus when I arrived there were others like me in suits, police officers, construction workers, and college girls. Quite an assortment. After waiting in line perhaps ten minutes with my client, I was up. The menu was overwhelming. Biscuits ten different ways, eggs, grits, soups, chicken, veggies, you name it and if it's southern, it was on the menu. I decided on an assortment of biscuits including ones with bacon, country ham, pork loin, plus egg and cheese. I managed to scarf down about half of each except the country ham which I polished off completely. How good was the country ham? The next morning before my 8:00 AM flight to DC, I ordered 200 of them to go. I carried them in two large aluminum foil pans onto the airplane and then into my office in the District. It is a very crowded breakfast nook. The place is big but the crowd is bigger. Get in line, read the walls and windows and then place your order. No substitutions just add ons and most importantly. ..CASH ONLY. I had the everything omelet. It was good. The sawmill gravy was ok. Kinda had the consistency of saw dust. They only take cash and that's actually good because it keeps the line moving!! It was recommended by a friend and we decided to just go early.... good thing too!! We were there at 6:15 in the morning and were in a line!! The store was filling up too. Service was blazing fast. Within ten minutes our food was in front of us. The best pancakes I've had around here, reinforced by the fact that the Mrs, who doesn't like pancakes, ate one of my three. Sweet lawd, that was a great breakfast. I was in Memphis for a few days, had been going to other local places but found Bryant's on Yelp. I'd read there would be a line and my wife and I decided if it was a long wait we'd go to Bob's Barksdale. We arrive and yes, there is a line. After watching it for a minute I realized it's moving fast. With so many options I'm not sure what to pick and then I see it, the sampler! Eggs, biscuits, white gravy, grits, multiple kinds of meats, perfect! We order at the counter (as everyone does) and sit down. I'm watching the room, the staff are moving fast, like really fast. Filling drinks, getting napkins, creamers, water everything. They earn their money for sure. The tables turn fast, food is coming out fast and it's just a great show to watch. The food comes, it's a lot of food! I ordered a short stack for my wife and I to split too. Everything was good and my coffee was always full. Yelp guided us here and we were not disappointed. As others have mentioned, the line can be long, seating can be crowded, and they are a cash-only establishment (there is an ATM at the gas station next door). That said, things more quickly and people are very friendly. The food is decent -- I wasn't as impressed by the gravy as others. It was pretty flavorless and had a weird texture; it doesn't cling to the side of the cup but pulls away cleanly... not sure how they managed that. I'd have liked it a little more peppery and/or maybe have a sausage gravy option, but that's just me. Biscuits are not the light and fluffy kind -- they are dense to stand up to the gravy; this is an observation, not a complaint. Eggs were cooked perfectly. Grits were a little watery and served with fake butter, which I don't like at all. Coffee was good. Fried bologna is thick cut and tasty. Lots of food, for not a lot of cash. The best ever? They do not accept any form of credit or debit. Also, there is always a line. It does go pretty fast so it's not a big deal, but if you are super hungry or pressed for time you may want to do take out. They are also closed on Sundays. After reading several great reviews of this place, we decided to try it out. We attempted to visit Bryant's on a Sunday morning and just by glancing through the windows we could tell that it was WAY to crowded. We tried again on a Wednesday morning and it was still very busy, but not as bad. (We decided if it was always pretty busy then it must be pretty good!). When we first entered we were a bit confused as to what to do...do we sit down first? Is there a waitress? After a few minutes of observation we realized that you order at the counter. There was quite a line, but it seemed to move very fast. At this point we also remembered (from looking at the website) - this place is CASH ONLY. I ordered the breakfast special - 2 eggs, biscuits & gravy, grits & choice of meat. This is a "seat yourself" place...(I think) and there are many seats, but they are very crammed and narrow. With four of us at one table we had very limited space and with the seats being connected to the table there is no way to make more room. The food came out very fast and the orders were exactly right. The biscuits are delicious and plenty!! (they give you three with this order) The gravy is not very good - it tasted like grease and flour only, but after I doctored it up with salt & pepper it was still just "ok", the bacon was crispy and the grits were ok as well. Someone in our party tried the cinnamon roll french toast and it was delicious! It also came with a side of strawberries & blueberries which looked amazing. Well, lol the wait was definitely something serious. There were approximately 50 people in front of me and my daughter. The menu was pretty impressive. I'm not an omelet eater at all but theirs looked mighty fine. I ordered 3 pancakes, eggs with cheese, grits, hash browns, biscuits and gravy with 2 orange juices. My total came out to $15.60. WHICH reminds me, they do NOT accept cards. So, make SURE you take cash ONLY. The food is MORE than Plentiful. The staff is swift to say the least and I've NEVER gotten a 'cook to order' meal So quickly. The food was pretty good. Not the best but, good. Also, its not the best place for 'groups'. So don't go with more that 1 person and try not to go with kids at all. And get there as early as Humanly possible to TRY to avoid the lines. We got there at about 9 and still waited around 30 mins. I have lived in Memphis for most of my life and have never tried Bryant's Breakfast. OMG, I have been cheating myself. When I walked through the door, there were people everywhere; black, white, tall, short, fat, skinny, cops, thugs, ministers, nurses, all kinds of people eating talking and enjoying each other's company. I knew then, this was a good place to eat. Since it was my first visit, I decided to play it safe. I really wanted one of those frisbee looking pancakes I saw, but i was going to play it safe. I got a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit. That was safe enough, so i thought. There was enough bacon and eggs on the biscuit to make another two biscuit sandwiches. And the biscuit, OMG. That was the best biscuit I have ever eaten. It literally melted in my mouth. And the bacon... they must raise their own hogs because the bacon was the best EVER. I don't have to go into mentioning how friendly the staff was to all their customers. It was like a family reunion and everyone there made me feel welcomed to the Bryant's Breakfast Family. Only the best breakfast place in the world! I've travelled to several cities and always look for local breakfast diners. My problem is that I always compare them to Bryant's. Back in the day, it was a BBQ joint that also served breakfast. Now the breakfast is so good, there is always a line. (Good thing, people). They also serve lunch up until 2pm I believe. Where it was once smoky and kind of dingy, the owner, Philip, cut out the smoking long ago and it is a very clean place. Get the breakfast special and I DARE you to eat it all! As a customer and a business owner I look for businesses to be upfront, honest, and appreciative of their patrons. I generally have good experiences with this business however, there are some things they need to consider. Firstly, In an economy that is in the state ours is, price transparency should be more honest. While waiting in line for more than 30 minutes, as only a loyal customer would, I reviewed the online menu to make my choice process faster for fellow patrons and noticed more than a 10% increase in prices posted in the store vs online. That's a big deal and should NOT be neglected by any business. As I reached the counter I pointed this out to management, and feel that by the response, they could care less about my concerns. It seems only here in the South do businesses get a regal sense of themselves upon becoming successful, i.e., having a "you don't like it don't buy from us" kind of attitude. My second problem with this visit: The food is usually very good and portions of this meal were. I had pancakes eggs and sausage. My eggs had a stale taste and ripe smell to them and once I smelled them i could barely finish the rest. Hopefully they will do better to honor their loyal customers like myself, that go out of their way to shop with them, spend more money than expected, and wait longer than really logical to have a business with moderate concerns about customer satisfaction. read more
