I like that better than a greasy menu. The restaurant is well decorated and seating was comfortable. The restroom was clean and smelled fresh. I got the chicken and waffles. I don't remember the name the had for it. But it was flavorful and delicious. My husband had the pancakes and a side of chicken sausage. Sugar grits in right off Beale in downtown Memphis. I chose this place as it was close to my hotel. Upon entering I was impressed with their lighting and overall ambiance of the restaurant. The food menu is what you would expect and they offer a lot of grits plates served with fish and other proteins. The food was tasty! Their biscuits are huge! Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Sugar Grits to anyone. While attempting to patronize this restaurant, we immediately noticed several customers experiencing issues with their orders and service. Rather than having their concerns resolved, many chose to leave. Looking back, we should have done the same. The service was unacceptable. We waited 1 hour and 20 minutes for our food, and during that entire time, no one checked on our table. We had to repeatedly flag down staff members just to request drink refills. One member of our party ordered an alcoholic beverage and reminded the staff about it more than once, yet it was never brought to the table. When our food finally arrived, it was only lukewarm. Two meals were immediately sent back because they were not fit to eat. The manager had our server inform us that he wouldn't refund the costs of the grits due to their poor quality. (Might we add we immediately sent them back and did not eat them)! When our checks arrived, we discovered that the meals we had sent back were still listed on the bill along with a pancake that was not received and an automatic gratuity despite the extremely poor service. The checks had to be corrected a second time. When the manager returned, there was no apology or acknowledgment of the inconvenience. Instead, he rudely stated, "On behalf of me and my kitchen staff, we went ahead and comped this for you," as though he was doing us a favor by removing charges for food that was never eaten because of its poor quality. From the excessive wait time and lack of attention from the staff to the lukewarm food and unprofessional management, this was one of the worst dining experiences I've had. Sugar Grits needs to seriously reevaluate both its customer service standards and its management team. If I could give them 0 stars I would! read more

Several reviews mention the wait time and it may have been a little longer than one might like but the food was great, as was the service. We were hungry and over ordered. The biscuit board was a treat! The biscuits were delicious and seemed truly scratch made. Husband had the cinnamon roll stack AND French toast. It was a lot of food! He loved the cinnamon rolls and said French toast was good but rolls were better. We did leave with leftovers. I saw lots of grits being ordered and will try those next time. Worth a try. Be patient. I would give this place negative stars if it was an option. The service is terrible not one server has any sense of urgency, we waited over 10 minutes to even be acknowledged, another 10 minutes to receive our drinks. The restaurant is disgusting your shoes stick to the floor when you're walking, I wouldn't feed the food to my dogs. The bacon was microwaved and near raw, the sausage was burnt, the grits were dry, the toast was served completely dry no butter and they don't bring any butter, jellies or jams for you. Hospital cafeteria food is better than what we were served not to mention the food we ordered did not match the menu. The food and atmosphere are great here, but we arrived when they opened at 8am and were told that the kitchen wouldn't start cooking for 15 minutes. So we were ok with that...but it wasn't until 8:35 when they finally took our order. The server was nice and tried to make the best of whatever was going on, but from the door opening to paying the bill took an hour and a half and we were the only people in the dining room. Our server was really nice and showed no signs of frustration or being overwhelmed, so this was a plus. I actually felt sorry for him. I ordered catfish and fries, and it arrived hot. The fish was good but could have stood to be a little more seasoned (personal preference). The fries were good, but I didn't really eat them because I like ranch dressing with my fries. The ranch was very thin and watery and was not tasty. I asked the server why it was this way and he said it was a house dressing. Our experience started with them trying to seat us in the very back, when we refused and asked to be seated in a more lighted area nearer to the front the manager had significant attitude and we should have left at that time. We ordered some basic breakfast items for me and a build your own omelette for my husband. This was the worst service that has ever happened in Memphis. We are from out of town and have visited twice. We have always been greeted with just joy and excitement from every local in town. Except here. There was a woman up front who didn't want to walk us back to our seats because it was too much walking so she passed us to a man who was supposed to be our server. We couldn't Understand him at all when he spoke. One whole sentence he tried to speak was turned into one word that we couldn't understand. So we just sat there. And sat. And sat. He never came back. We walked over to the bar area to see if I could get a wash cloth to clean the sticky table and bench we were on. That guy helped us and came over to clean it and apologized that our server never came. On his way over, I spotted a cockroach so he ran over and smashed it with his shoe. We should have left when that happened but we didn't. This guy also took our drink order which was two orange juices. He didn't deliver them though. He passed it to some other woman who looked like she was supposed to be some kind of manager or a person who was training walking around because she wasn't doing anything except attempting to fix things that went wrong. She delivered our orange juice and walked away instead of asking if we were ready to order or anything at all. That's when I decided if we see our "server" again, we would flag him down but instead, we found him seating someone else and taking their order. That's when we left. We let the bar tender know who helped with the orange juice which we didn't even touch. We also told the original woman who didn't want to walk us all the way to the back of the restaurant and she apologized as we walked out. We are now sitting at Automatic Slims for brunch and it's been amazing so far!! No cockroaches which is a plus. read more

They decided to put a party of 20 in the back with us so it was hard for our server to be attentive since he's hosting, serving , bussing & setup a party. The food finally came ; very disappointed. They ran out of butter knife's so we had to use steak knives, no French vanilla, empty pepper shaker. When you ask for scrambled eggs you only get one. I never leave reviews, but I really don't want others to experience what we did. We stopped in for breakfast at this place on a weekday. Our waitress was friendly, and the.cheese grits were delicious, but those are the only positives. It took a while to get our coffee and waters and getting refills took even longer. We ordered 2 meals, one of which came out about 30 minutes prior the other meal. We were initially told it would be out just a few minutes after the first meal was delivered. About 10-15 minutes later, we were told the oven was cold/working slowly but that the biscuits were baking and should be ready soon. Shortly after that, we were asked if we wanted to get something else instead, and I really wish we had just canceled the order at that point. We decided to wait until the food was ready because we assumed anything else would take as long or longer. When the food was finally delivered, the breakfast sausage and bacon were cold. I've worked in the service industry and get that stuff happens, but this was just over the top. No manager came to the table to apologize for the issue/service. A small discount or comp on the affected meal should have been offered, but it was not. A 20% gratuity was automatically added for a party of 2. I typically tip at least that anyway, but in this situation, I should have been able to tip a little less if I wanted. read more

SG had 3-4 waitresses active and serving tables and seating people.. the volume/pace was really slow for the business. The issue is, why seat us knowing you have personal issues or matters you need to overcome, we were asked did our waitress not come serve us drinks yet? To a complete different waitress. Politely responded no. Other couples are walking in and being seated and drinks brought to them immediately, consistent check up's at the table etc. The same lady who sat us down also sat down other couples and served them no issues consistent check-ups. We are finished eating and I guess currently waiting on the owner to come check us out?
