Checked this spot out Friday and Saturday night and had TWO different experiences. On Friday, it was great! Good drinks, awesome beer list and super chill vibes. Could have stayed all night. After thousands of reviews, I finally found a bar where the drab personality of one bartender dragged our experience to a sub 3 rating. The craft beer selection was great and the wooden inlays created a warm atmosphere. This seemed like a great place for a 3rd stop at our organized Philly Beer Crawl until we met HIM. Is it possible that HE just underwent a rare vocal cord injury or some sort of nerve damage to HIS cheeks to hinder a smile? Maybe in a busy bar I could give HIM some leeway, but other than us there were only three other customers. Pulling teeth to have him explain some of the beers on the menu. Finally decided on a 2SP Up & Out Hazy Aston PA 6%, which was very tasty. The gender assigned ultra clean bathroom was the highlight of the day. A rustic distressed wood wrapped mirror with industrial cement flooring and offering two height differential urinals all together creating a modern rustic vibe - hooray well done. Our experience was hindered by only HIM which overshadowed the cold beer. With several other bars within steps, why have a total "dud" working in a hospitality profession? This place had a great name, tasty beer and interesting ambiance and could have easily been a five star review which I dont hand out lightly, but was sadly ruined by HIM and totally avoidable. Food was OK, service was good. I gave a 20%+ tip. But my AMEX card wasn't returned. Mistakes happen, right? And I didn't catch it myself, so my bad, too. Took a day or two before my card was buying someone meals around Philly--then a $700 attempted charge at a mobile provider woke me and the fraud people up. I went to Bru with a group of about 12 for happy hour last night and we had a great time! During their regular service hours, the space is large with a variety of seating. Big tables in the back and front, high tops in the middle and standard bar seating. Our server was fabulous. Super attentive and was happy to split checks based on what we got and was happy to close people out as they left the larger party. The truffle fries are INCREDIBLE. They are seasoned great and have a unique truffle sauce compared to the oil you typically see. We also grabbed an order of fried oreos that were just as great! On the weekends, this bar turns into a full night-club type space, it's a little too packed for my liking and typically brings in a more college aged group and caters to that crowd. While I don't think I'll be going back on a night-out, I'll certainly be back for happy hour! read more

As most of my reviews start - my boyfriend drove us to Philly for a day trip and we stumbled onto BRU Craft & Wurst on our walk to another restaurant. The place is big enough for all the tables to be spaced out at least a foot or two from each other, which is fantastic for someone who gets claustrophobic. The space has two entrances/exits one on Drury St. and one on Chestnut St. We arrived around 2/3pm on a Saturday and it wasn't really packed. Just a few tables and and a bar area were occupied. It was about half occupied by the time we left. I ordered the Wurst Plate with Chicken apple and Bratwurst sausages ($22) and my boyfriend had (I think it was called) The German Cheesesteak ($18) and a Weihenstephaner beer ($8). I am polish so I really liked my meal. It was homey. It is a personal preference, but I enjoyed the Bratwurst sausage better. My boyfriend usually tries different cheesesteaks when we are in Philly. He says he enjoyed it. I think it was my first time in a German restaurant in Philly and I didn't hate it. The staff was friendly and attentive, and the service fast. The only thing was that the $15 drink was served in a smaller then usual glass and mostly filled with ice. It was called "Little Honey Will Dew" and overall it was very delicious. I asked for cranberry juice when I was done with my drink, but what I was served tasted like red dyed water. The server exchanged it for an orange juice ($3) which tasted a bit less watered down. When I looked at the receipt later at home I noticed an "operational fee." I don't really understand what that is... I usually see those on Uber Eats or other online services, but not for in person service... and no it wasn't tax, card fee or a tip we left...weird. read more

First off I am a good tipper, party of one they put a 20% gratuity and they claimed only temporarily because of foreigners and World Cup, then there was a point of sale fee, even though I paid cash. He removed it but that is not how business should be run. Waiting for an air conditioner fee. Very small print at bottom of menu says 20% gratuity added to all checks. If you come in for a few beers and don't need to see a menu that's tough luck on you. A forced gratuity is not customer friendly especially when you hide it in small print at the bottom of the menu. We always tip and don't have a problem with tipping, all servers deserve and expect to be tipped but 20% to pour a beer is a bit much. Especially when beers are $8-$10 each. And to top It off they added an operations fee that was not disclosed anywhere. read more

Bouncers - Crooked, Corrupt, and Cowardly This place is run by bouncers who think they're untouchable. I had my government-issued, real ID illegally taken--no scan, no blacklight, nothing. Just their "keen eye" deciding it wasn't real. When I politely asked for it back, explaining it was legitimate, they immediately got hostile and aggressive, flat-out refusing to return it. Clearly realizing that's illegal. I called the police. The bouncer who took my ID, along with his buddy who was cracking jokes and escalating the situation, IMMEDIATELY ran inside. When the officers arrived they made the manager go get the bouncers who couldn't keep his story straight. Questioning me to justify why he took my ID--and ONLY THEN did they finally crawl back outside admit they surprisingly found it in their back pocket. The cops got my ID back in under 20 seconds. Seems like these bouncers knew exactly what they were doing was wrong and were too scared. 2 weeks later I walked past again, and these same bouncers--who hid from the cops earlier--wouldn't let me and my whole group in. He just smirked and said, "You can't come in--you called the cops on us." So let's be clear: these bouncers will break the law, steal your ID, threaten you, run and hide when the cops come, then blacklist you for exposing them. I've been coming here for a while now.. of age and I've never had an issue--until now. Instead of handling business professionally, they'd rather protect their own big Paul Blart ego. So I was in town with some coworkers for the Army vs Navy football game and we decided to grab dinner and some drinks. We stopped into Brü since most of downtown was full and they had some space. Our seating was reminiscent of a picnic table, which was rustic to say the least but we had good views of the TVs. We placed our order of the food while the game was taking place. Fries were good, chicken sandwich lacked spice but had decent crunch. We got charged extra for ranch and hot sauce...after we ordered wings. And a extra $2 for ordering something neat. Which wasn't even a larger pour... Service was relatively quick but when it came time to get the check, the bill came out as one check. We were all separate so we asked her to split the checks into four. I thought it would've been a simple task, but apparently our waitress had no idea what items belong to whom. I thought no problem, we can tell you who had what but then she handed us a pen, asked us to split up and mark down, which belong to who. Never in my life have I been to an establishment where they asked me to split the check myself. So after we had marked off on the receipt which items belong to whom, and gave her our credit cards, she came back for a fourth time asking if we can just write it and total it on the back of the receipt since it was too confusing for her. Once we finished detailing which items belong to whom we decided to finish watching the game. The manager at the time then asks us to get up since they needed to seat more people after only sitting there for 10min but then told us that he would compensate us with a drink. The place doesn't take reservations, so try and go when it is not too busy because it fills up fast! Great beer list of drafts and bottles! The following is regarding using BRU for college/corporate/recruiting/fundraising events: BRU's prior floor manager, Maureen, also a manager of Aloosh inc, used to serve college students liquor underage. Personal, first-hand experience. Negligence. Liability. Maureen trained another man to run bar operations at Aloosh while she transitioned to becoming floor manager of BRU. A man by the name of Michael. Michael showed the same negligence in bar operations, intentionally. Particularly: when it came to female, underage college students. On top of it, both Maureen and Michael were always coughing. Particularly near drink items and garnishes. I don't know if this was due to some type of health issue, or inherited transmitted autoimmune issue. Still highly unappetizing and unsanitary either way. And possibly, another liability issue. In terms of using BRU for a corporate/fundraising event: These types of liability factors could really cost you in the end. read more

I've been to Bru a few times for drinks, but yesterday (Saturday) afternoon was my first time eating there. Service was prompt and the staff was friendly. Our server (I believe her name was Kiara) was good. We were in around "linner" so it wasn't packed at all. We got the Bavarian pretzel appetizer. It was just okay. It's $6 for one decent sized pretzel and some cold cheese dip. We also ordered the Fried Chicken sandwich and Bru Burger, which we split. The burger was delicious! Perfect flavor pairings throughout the whole thing. The burger tasted fresh and was juicy. The Fried Chicken sandwich was good, but I felt it was lacking in the flavor department just a little. The fries are tiny and skinny - I could've skipped them all together. We drank a mule and one of the beers off their extensive beer list - three aged philosophers or something like that. Both were on point. Bru is definitely a great place for drinks, I've never been disappointed. Food was good, but I have a feeling their strong suit in sausages is probably where people should order. Look. We all came here for fun. We were all having fun. One of my friends was being obnoxious as hell. I have been working all day. I moved out the way. Hung out in the corner until my partner was ready to go. Suddenly some woman comes over. (I have my eyes closed) never does she ask if I am ok. My friend goes "I know she's not asleep!!" Someone I hadn't seen behind the bar all night.....Even when I paid for my other friends drink. So I open my eyes see this random woman who goes "she can't be sleep!" Basically tells me to leave and turns the lights on for our section like we broke some rule or were very sketchy. The thing that got my friends next to me was that she didn't even ask if I was ok. Just scolded me for my eyes being closed and ruined the vibe for the whole table. It should be said....I personally only had water the entire night. I was the most sober person in the entire group. But what do y'all do when your partner wants to stay out, you live in Philly, it's 11:30 at night, and you want everyone to be happy? I remove myself slightly so I'm not a crabby person. Apparently being mature and responsible are frowned upon there. They will make money either way but know if I'm in a large or small group I will never go back to this trash establishment. Tried Bru for the first time a couple weekends ago. It was just my husband and I, and we checked in with the hostess who said it would be about 10 minutes for a table. We were the only people waiting for a table, but saw that people were coming in after us to get in line. So we waited for about 15 minutes and saw she had seated 2 girls who had just walked in. We were really annoyed so my husband went up and asked her what was going on. She had just forgotten about us, which was not a great way to start our experience. She then immediately seated us. She didn't give us the QR code though when she seated us so we were trying to find their menu online, but found out when our waitress came by a couple minutes later it wasn't the right one. Our waitress was really nice and patient! We ordered some beer to start. Bru's menu is super limited. There are about 2 appetizers and 3 entrees to choose from. My husband and I both ordered the chicken sandwich, which was $14. Pricey in my opinion. The sandwich was good, not great. It comes with homemade pickles and they were really smokey- like BBQ smokey. I don't know how else to describe them other than to say they were weird and not in a good way. Overall, we were not a fan of this place at all. It's mediocre and a little overpriced. When I tried reporting this to both the bartenders & security, they truly could've cared less. The one bartender in particular was so rude, I wouldn't be shocked she was in on it. Based on my visit to Berlin and Schwedt a few years ago, this an authentic German biergarten. A good selection of German beer (including my favorite Weitzen dunkel) and great food. The wurst platter with a selection of sausages, potatoes and kraut is excellent. The only negative issue is they ran out of wienerschnitzel AND spaetzel. But the bratwurst, knockwurst, and currywurst were excellent!! The currywurst was absolutely as good as any I had in Berlin. I even had to finish off my friend's leftovers. No way I could give that back. The sauerkraut and potatoes were also great. Service was good (maybe a little slow by American standards, but absolutely authentic European). A five star experience if they hadn't rum out of two German staples. read more
