There is nothing like an apple fritter from buckeye donuts!! They taste exactly like the ones Big Bear used to have..I never thought I'd find one like it again!! My employer purchases donuts every morning from this place and has them in our cafe so I already knew they were slam! Prices are great and it tasted like heaven in my mouth!! Perfect for my afternoon sweet tooth. I didn't even realize they had a drive through so I didn't even have to get out of the car. I'm writing this retro review as I have had donuts from this location and would like to let you know that if you feel like you want Buckeye Donuts, you should visit the OSU Campus location as opposed to here. The donuts 'can' be as good, but wasn't the time I visited. While it has the Buckeye Donut name, the place had more of a Dunkin Donuts vibe coming from it, not that it should hamper the quality of the donut. I had picked up a dozen donuts for my family to have in order to try Buckeye Donuts, which I had raved about. However, I hadn't actually gotten them from this location before. The donuts I got, however, were just mediocre and some of the donuts felt a bit hard, like they had stayed on a shelf for too long, which, considering I got there early in the morning, shouldn't be the norm for any donut place. You can taste some of the quality of Buckeye in them, but it's not the standard I hope for when I go there. That's why I pick the OSU location over this, mainly because I know that I have consistently gotten a higher quality donut from there as opposed to here. read more

Short and sweet. Donuts are good but costly. There's plenty of places out there making great donuts from scratch. Standouts can only be your selection now. I see the Buckeye, and the eclair with bacon on top. Nothing else pops to mind. Shouldn't it pop to mind? I don't find the staff overly friendly. Before going here I read up and knew I was in for a treat! AND boy was I... I don't know what to say but, they should step out of the donut business. If anyone thinks these donuts are good they haven't tasted good donuts...they were all dry and the peanut butter donuts was dry and like they took a big spoon full of dry peanut butter and slung it in the middle. I have to start off by saying, I visited here later in the evening, around 8pm. It's a 24/7 location but that doesn't mean they have all of the specials available, 24/7. For instance, I asked for a Cruller just to find out that they are only available in the morning. Somewhat common for a bakery establishment but, I'd think a 24 hour bakery would be running that long, too. Taking these afterthoughts and first impressions into consideration, the donuts were pretty good. The chocolate iced devils food was a little dry but I think it was from sitting on the shelf throughout the day. You could tell it was at one time, quite good. My bowtie was probably the best. A traditional glazed donut but in a twisted bowtie shape. It was fluffy, soft and sweet. If I had been near a microwave, it would have been perfect. Lastly, I wanted to try a filled donut. Vanilla icing filled with chocolate icing on top, to be specific. The vanilla icing was VERY sweet. Tasted almost like eating straight powdered sugar. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I was expecting a more vanilla pudding or custard type icing. Probably my fault since they had a Boston Creme filled donut. Definitely an area staple and worth a shot. Just maybe try to fit in with the morning rush. read more

Came here the other day just to try it out. I rarely come down this way because I think this area looks pretty scary sometimes. It's on High St., but it's all the way down past Thurman Ave. in Merion Village. In fact, I didn't even know that there was a Buckeye Donuts down here until I was down here driving around going somewhere else. I thought there was only one Buckeye Donuts! Jeff and I came back here to see if it was any good. Plus it's a lot more accessible than the campus location because it has a parking lot. So we pulled into the lot and right away almost got hit by some old guy in a pick-up truck backing out of his space that wasn't paying attention. Then he looked at us like we were just stupid kids and drove away. I gotta say, this place looks pretty junky. Inside and out. The B and E are missing from the front sign. It is old and outdated. The menu inside is written with those little plastic letters on a white board. It doesn't look like this place has changed much since it opened. There was a group of three older people sitting in the corner playing rummy. This looked like their daily hangout. I have no doubt that this place has it's regulars, but here it's old retired people as opposed to the students you'd find at the campus location. This one is also different in that they don't serve gyros or anything like that (I guess the older crowd just don't crave them like drunk college students) and they have tons of lottery tickets displayed at the counter. Weird thing: As soon as we walked in the woman behind the counter greeted us with a smile and said, "Oh my gosh, I haven't seen you in here in forever!" To me. Yeah, I've never been here! It kinda threw me off but I shrugged it off and we proceeded to order our donuts. We looked at their selection behind the counter and Jeff instantly singled one out a chocolate cake donut with colored sprinkles all over it. They did still have a pretty good selection. I forgot to mention it was the middle of the day. On a weekday. I couldn't decide, but the lady said, "Don't forget to check out these ones," and pointed out ones in the display case under the counter. She pointed out what was what and I had to stop her when she got to the signature Buckeye Donut. It had chocolate icing with a glop of peanut butter cream on top. That was mine! When she took it out she told me that those had been sitting out for a while so it wasn't real fresh, so she said she'd give it to me for half price. She also said that she hadn't made them or else there would have been a heck of a lot more peanut butter on top. But that was fine. It was like $1.37 for our treats. And the taste? Jeff's was really good, and I don't even really like chocolate donuts. But I would have eaten this one. Mine was great. It tasted fine - it wasn't stale and it was soft and chewy like it was supposed to be. The peanut butter cream was very light and fluffy, but it would have been nice if there was more of it! I try to stay away from donuts but if I ever have a craving this is likely where I'll be to get some more.The donuts are cheap, the service was nice, and they had a great selection of kinds of donuts. Finally got a chance to try Buckeye Donut's infamous Buckeye cake donut. Good? It's sweet, so yeah, from that standpoint. However, the peanut butter topping was too sugary; I prefer a more "salty", thicker, savory peanut butter flavor. Definitely more of a fast food donut shop. While it's always good to have a sweet-tooth outlet close by the doctors office, I guess I'm more attracted to higher quality donuts, since I can't tolerate too many sweets, period. I'm glad I've tried BD, and can say I've partaken in a city institution (some say). read more

The jelly filled had way too much unnatural processed filling and the long johns had gaps in the fillings. I frequent the S. High location. This makes the third time in recent months that the quality of their donuts is very poor. I drive extra from Ashville to get the chocolate iced cream filled donuts. The last 2 times they were fresh (soft) not warm but skimpy on the filling. I even called the second time to let a manager (he said he was the owner) know. I get maybe new hire or other reason. But, now, today being the third time, I have to write a poor review. The donuts at 0930 in the morning weren't fresh. And, they had very little filling. There is nothing worse than when your favorite donut place tanks. Your name, in case you've forgotten, is Buckeye Donuts. Therefore because you are a 24/7 donut shop, you should always have your signature buckeye donut either on hand or have the peanut butter filling available to plop on top of a chocolate frosted one. This used to be the case for years but I don't know if they're under newer management or what but they consistently never have them regardless of the time of day going on 2 years. How hard is it?? It's literally a squeeze from a piping bag on top! You don't even have to jam it into the donut. Yes there is another location but you all know what the parking situation is there and they end up absorbing the smells of the other things they cook there. This review is for the apple fritter only since that's what I ordered and I didn't try their other donuts. They have an excellent apple fritter, it was flaky, crunchy from the sugar and had a really great consistency and perfect moist texture. Overall I would put it at the top of my list of one of the best Apple fritters I've had. Will most definitely be going back and although I would like to try their other donuts, when I find something good I keep ordering it so I will probably get another apple fritter. read more

Not many little "old style" donut shops around any more but Buckeye has been around forever. They still have the counter where you can sit and enjoy your donut or grab it to go. The staff is very nice and fast even on the busy week ends you can get in and out quickly. The donuts are fresh and even if you sleep I. Our experience was stale tasting donuts, and they didn't have many varieties available. They don't have the extra food at this location. I moved into Merion Village in 2013 and found The Merion Village Buckeye Donuts on South High Street. SAD SITUATION AT THE SOUTH HIGH, MERION VILLAGE, LOCATION.......NO BATHROOM. I'm unsure if that's even legal. COFFEE...amazing coffee. It really is. However, you must pay for each individual cup....it's not a coffee cup that gets refilled like in a Diner. DONUTS... A. They'll make for you anything that you need to have if it's different from what is available as long as shells are available. B. TASTE IS ALWAYS FRESH, FILLINGS ARE PLENTIFUL, VARIETY IS MORE THAN EXPECTED, COST HAS REMAINED LOW, FRESHNESS IS KEY. C. Service has always been kind, attentive and thankful D. South High, Merion Village, location HAS A DRIVE THRU....YES!! E. 24 Hour Availability...ALWAYS open... F. The Campus Location serves Food where Merion Village location does not. In today's world I don't believe the younger generation has the history with donuts like my generation does. Being a Dunkin Donuts obsessed New Englander, I was skeptical - very skeptical. There is nothing like a Boston Creme Donut from DD's, sorry world. And, as it turns out, this remained the truth - but that doesn't mean Buckeye Donuts wasn't awesome. It kinda blew my mind. I am so glad we went to the South Side location. Very much a small-town lunch counter/diner feel, this location doesn't have the gyros and fries that the campus shop panders to drunken undergrads - and rightly so. Fried munchies very much belong on campus - a true doughnut shop is what you'll find on S. High. There are picnic benches outside and a small counter inside. When we went in they were playing a football game, and there was a lone local watching it and sipping watery coffee out of a styrofoam cup. Of course we ordered coffees and two donuts each. The Bavarian cream did not live up to Boston creme of Dunkin Donuts fame, but then again, nothing will, so I wasn't surprised. The apple fritter was fantastic, as was the krueller (I think you all call them doughnut sticks here?) and the coconut covered doughnut we shared. They all tasted very homemade, which of course they are - which is why I liked them, compared to the manufactured and uniform taste and texture of the (still amazing) donuts at DD. With high hopes I stopped at Buckeye Donuts. Staff was nice, shop was cool, a few older men spending their retirement at the counter. Got a dozen fancy/mixed for $13.95. Not a bad price. Too bad all the donuts seemed 12 hours old. Not one of them had any crispness. They could probably improve all the donuts by covering each of them in the peanut butter cream you'll find in the buckeye donut. The cake donuts were each inedible, even the glazed coated peanut one. They were all hard and dry. The long johns were limp and underfilled. Apple fritters were pretty good, but would have been better fresh. Again, all donuts suffered because they didn't taste fresh. At 10Am you think they'd have at least been the second batch for the day, but I have had many donuts and am sure they were not remotely fresh out the oven. Buckeye donuts is a Columbus landmark Situated on South high street. They have a wide variety of donuts, my favorite are the long johns or eclairs. The long johns are cream filled deliciousness that comes with maple, chocolate, or vanilla icing. I have also called in a special order of cream-filled donut holes iced with chocolate, vanilla, or maple. This is a great hit if you want to bring these to the office instead of a box of donuts, but call ahead the day or night before so they can reserve the dough to make them. The prices are reasonable.
