BUT... my husbands friend were brown, overdone, dry and barely warm. His COD came equally overcooked and dry AND PERFECT CUT PENTGON SHAPES, cut like some store bought box of fish!!! Even o could find frozen fish in NATURE shapes and this was SO not worth the $$! They are good with stuff they make in house but really bad with reheated frozen food, which is almost all of the sides (my onion rings were not warm either and nothing to write about and I live onion rings. This place was recommended by the place we were staying at. For starters, it took us about 10 minutes to get seated. Once seated, it took us about 40 minutes to be assigned a waiter. That After flagging down a waiter, it seemed like things were looking up. Another hour goes by before we get our food. We were all tired and ready to eat before we got here, but were willing to keep giving this place a shot. Our food finally comes out, and the food is... okay. I've been here so many times in the past three years but held off finishing a review since the experiences have run the whole gamut of possible star ratings. I don't want to slam them unnecessarily but I also don't want to rate unrealistically high - so settling on a solid AOK. The setup/ambiance is odd. It's housed in a very old building that was once a bank or some type of office, I think. It's hard to figure out where you enter and how to get seated. The dining rooms inside are pretty small and the tables and chairs are large - as a result the restaurant really can't hold that many people. Acoustics make it really loud - hard to hear your table mate but other people's chatter is coming in loud and clear. There's usually background music which you may or may not hear. They have a big outdoor dining area and frequently live music out there on the weekends. The outdoors actually holds more people than the indoors, but outdoor dining is rarely my thing. There is also a second floor containing a bigger dining room that's opened sometimes as well as a very tiny bar (really a service bar) with some added tables. This is only accessible by either a very steep staircase on one side, or by a dizzying spiral staircase on the other that is straight out of Alfred Hitchcock's vertigo. There is no access for disabled to get up here. The food - well I have had, in the past, a BLT with the bacon so overcooked that it shattered like glass when I bit into it. I've also had dry and tasteless brisket. But, on the other hand I have had excellent Fish & Chips - and let me tell you, they can't be beat when it comes to steak. They offer filet, ribeye and sirloin, on a hot plate; and they know how to cook to order. You want medium rare - you will get medium rare. We've experienced it enough times that they get five stars for the steaks. Keep it up, please! I've had the ribs too but honestly can't recall - I believe they were good not fantastic. Some of the sides are really good too. The waitstaff is overall efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. You get checked on appropriately. We went on a Saturday maybe around 4-5. Sat on the patio. Wasn't too busy maybe 3-4 tables outside. Took a bit for the server to greet us. After about 10 mins after ordering we got our drinks. Food seemed to take quite a bit longer for wings and a burger and an appetizer. We noticed a table who came in after us, food and drinks came very quickly. Even refills before we got a second drink. The food was great though. I'm also a bartender/manager so I do know how hard it is to get the right staff and get them trained. We will be back as I said food and atmosphere was great. read more

Hubby & I decided to try this place for supper. The ambiance is an old, turn of the century house. We were seated upstairs which meant climbing some steep stairs. Our server got our drink order, Coke for hubby & ice water for me. The water tasted like a chlorinated swimming pool so I wouldn't recommend it. I ordered a "starter", SW Egg rolls ($10.99). They tasted frozen & microwaved so I asked & the server said the Starters did come in frozen. Hubby got fried chicken, 4 piece dark ($14.49) with a side of loaded tater tots ($1.25 up charge). Hubby liked the chicken & tots but I thought the chicken was bland. My son asked me to bring him home the Pork & Brisket Combo ($17.99). The 2 sides he ordered were broccoli & a baked potato. He gave his meal 3 stars. I also gave my starter 3 stars. I wouldn't mind giving this place another try but next time I will try to order something that is freshly made. read more

We discovered this after a funeral in New Lebanon and thought the reviews looked promising. Cute place in a 2 story house. It was cold out so the hot soup hit the spot. We shared french onion and requested it be really hot. It wasnt hot but warm .. with homemade rye croutons. I got pulled pork sandwich with bit of bbq and chips. Husband got fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. I came with 2 breasts and Husband said it was hot and very good. Bbq was hot and juicy. Did run into some fat that really bothered me. We stopped in a while back and they were not busy. I believe we were the only ones there. We got there probably an hour before they were to close and one door was locked so we went to another door and it wasn't. I ordered a drink from the bar while waiting on my steak and it was good so I ordered another and they took my glass and re used it. They didn't just bring me another drink. The steak was good the Brussels were amazing! If it's snowing don't go here because the staff will be wanting to close up and leave early. read more

Went there this evening for the first time since the ownership change. We were seated immediately on the patio. Our waitress took our drink order, brought was them and took our orders. She then disappeared for nearly 45 minutes. No salads or refills or anything. Then suddenly the salads and entrees appeared all at once. We ate our salads as our food sat and cooled off. I know they were busy but people around us who were seated after us got their food before us. Food was nothing exceptional and it took another 40 minutes to get the check We expected more from this place, since we've dined there many times and had a rehearsal dinner there. Very disappointed! This place is our "go to" we have been going there for years and the food is always good. Decent portions too. Although, being a brisket snob, I would suggest to stay away from the brisket. I believe its actually just smoked pot roast because It doesn't have that "brisket" texture. Service is just ok. read more

A diamond in the rough! Jake's has a potentially great dining atmosphere in the house that it is in. The food was OK but the presentation was a bit lackluster. We were served with chipped plates and plastic cups with sauces which seemed tacky for what seems to be a sit down restaurant. Also it was not the cleanest and could use a little more attention to detail. The service was very attentive and prompt but there was some horse play going on and some colorful language in the server area. We will give it another try in the future. read more

My daughter's equestrian team was in town for a horse show. We were trying to put together a team dinner for around 25 people, about half of which were teenagers, on a Saturday night. Buckeye Jake's not only accommodated our entire group last minute, they allowed us to take over the entire second floor! And when I say take over, I mean take over! The staff at Buckeye Jake's entertained, tolerated and were incredibly friendly to a group of around 12 teenagers excited after a great horse show. I wish I could give them more stars, because I have never seen anything like it. By the time we left the kids knew the names of the entire kitchen staff and the kitchen staff knew the names of all the kids. We even got pictures of the group with the staff. Just an amazing family run business. Great food and the best staff! We will definitely be back! read more

We love going to Buckeye's Jakes for lunch or dinner! We love the homey feel because it is an old house they turned into a restaurant. The menu is extensive and everything is reasonably priced for the portion sizes. They have incredible BBQ, but there is plenty of other options in case you want something different. We have never had to wait for a table and the entire staff has always been friendly and welcoming. The food comes out hot and quickly. We will continue to make a special trip out to West Alexandria to eat at Buckeye Jakes! read more

We were searching for a place to eat after snow tubing in Valleys Edge and located this quant restaurant in West Alexandria. Yelp says they average 4.5 star which was an understatement to say the least. When we first came in there no one to greet us. It was a little after 2:00 PM and the restaurant had one other table. After searching around for several minutes we located the staff mingling in the kitchen. We asked for a table of six. We finally got seated and ordered our drinks ten minutes later. The ambiance was cozy and quant. This place had a large selection of items on the menu to say the least. We ordered our lunch which consisted of French Onion soup, Fish and chips, Burger, and wings. The French onion soup was absolutely terrible it was loaded with a beef stock onions and tons of salt. It was like drinking a table spoon of salt. I had to send this soup back promptly. The worst soup I have ever experienced. I do not recommend this soup what so ever. Do not waste your money or time with this soup unless you want high sodium intake. The fish and chip dish was pretty good. The fish had a lot of breading and the fries were crispy. The hamburger with bacon was good. The wings was good but a little on the over cooked side. This place has good bar foods if that is what you are looking for. The service was sub par based on the fact that we had to then again locate the wait staff in kitchen socializing again. Overall experience was a little under average. Overall, the food was almost average and the service was below average. If you are looking for a super casual dining experience than this place was just that. Minimize your expectations because this was not as well rated as shown on Yelp. Went to Jake's for a big lunch with 5 hungry and thirsty guys. And with that comes a big bill but worth every penny! The ribs were spot on with fall off the bone tender and juicy meat. Also tried the new Cuban sandwich and the fried pickles on it are a nice little twist. Appetizer's were great also, the fried green beans a favorite of our table with the south west egg rolls coming in a close second. The food here is delicious. I've tried a new item every time I have either visited or ordered takeout and every time I am impressed with it. Even the salads are really good. People say a salad is a salad, but these taste better than your average one. Only thing that I feel lacks is that every time I have gotten takeout at least one order is wrong, usually two. We were passing through West Alexandria today and stopped in with my Mother in Law for lunch. The restaurant Bar is in a charming old house, that's perfect for inside or outside dining. Buckeye Jake's has there BEST baby back ribs ever! Both my husband & Mother in Law had the rib dinner and raved about it. Plentiful sides are also available, allowing you to go healthier, think broccoli & Brussels sprouts or less healthy but really yummy Mac and cheese and coleslaw. Service was very good. We're fairly new to the area and we were looking for something more local. We're foodies, and I love haddock. Everything was excellent. We ordered our food for takeout. Everything was ready when we got there, and traveled well the 20 mins to get home. The haddock was excellent, the fried pickles were very tasty, the pulled pork very moist and well seasoned, and the potato skins were crispy and delicious. I have visited in the past giving a 5 star review but my most recent visit has changed my mind. It may have been a change in cook or lack of experience with the cook. However, when visiting with family I was not impressed my food was burnt/ over cooked and my moms meal had cold potatoes. Not a good impression for first timers. We got sat at a dirty table, when she did come clean it she only cleaned half of it (we kind of laughed and so did the couple next to us). Our waitress was very nice, but that's where it ended. It took our food at least 40 minutes to come out.... and our waitress didn't check on us or tell us why until right before it came out. We were told it was due to them waiting on the pork to get done cooking and she was apologetic. The meat was luke warm. The pork was dry and absolutely tasteless. The brisket did have flavor, but was also dry. My Mac and cheese was cold in spots ( reminded me of stouffers without added seasoning). The fries were actually good- but were on the cool side. My husbands burger was dry and "gross". We asked for our bill when we received our food due to us seeing the couple next to us wait a VERY long time for their bill. We won't be back. read more

My husband and I have eaten here a couple times. Nice place with decent service and good size menu. But their salads are entirely unoriginal. The appetizers are frozen foods and not worth buying. The pulled Pork is really good. They smoke their meets out back. The patio is really nice too. Wish they would put some effort into creating fresh made appetizers and be a little more creative with the salad selection. A simple recipe book of salads could offer 4-6 different selections. We were immediately seated but when three more people we knew also walked in after the funeral, the wait staff was more than accommodating to let us move a few tables together so we could all sit together. Came here while back in my hometown for the weekend. My boyfriend recommended the wings, and I'm so glad he did. They were my favorite type of wings!
