I'm not sure about this place anymore....I have been here a few times and maybe the luster has wore off because it really bothered me that I spent soo much on Chinese food. Make no mistake this place is a place to impress your date if that is what you want to do. If you want to pay $20 for drinks to look like your a boss then go here. If you want to pay $18 for appetizers then dine here, if you want to pay $37 for an entry that is appetizer size then dine here. BUT if you are sensible then there are better options in the area. In fact, I think Tao's offers a better menu selection for the same price point. Again the food was good at Buddakan but I just felt they need to recharge the wow factor if I'm to go back. This is basically mediocre Chinese food being served in a two story wood paneled faux hotel lobby, complete with snooty front desk hostesses mourning in all black. Fortunately it's dark enough to miss the ill placed billboard sized Renaissance art. Bring your night vision goggles as you'll need them to see your potstickers and fried rice. The ambiance and service was good; however, the food was awful. We ordered the pork buns which fell apart immediately. The scallion pancake, cauliflower lollipops, and veggie stir fry had absolutely no flavor. The stir fry was simply sautéed vegetables. There was no taste aside from oil. We held a birthday dinner at Buddakan this past weekend and could not have been more pleased with the experience. The staff was courteous and wonderfully accommodating to our large group. I ordered a birthday cake several weeks before as a surprise, and it was handled beautifully. The price of the cake was relatively inexpensive but was worth every penny as it was moist and decadent. I'd been to Buddakan once before several years ago, but was left with such a great impression that I was eager to share it with my friends. Buddakan is lovely on the inside, and the food is even better. Most notable were the edamame dumplings which melt in your mouth and the sweet & sour chicken. Oh yeah, I love this place!!! Its a sexy Asian fusion restaurant located right next to Chelsea Market. This restaurant is always busy so reservations are recommended but don't be deterred if you are unable to make a reservation. You can often find seating in the lounge, where they also serve the full menu...and its great for people watching! For my meal, I had the chicken-shrimp spring rolls, lobster dumpling, and the duck dumpling soup. All of the dishes were great and full of flavors that delighted the palette. Buddakan is a beautifully decorated restaurant with some great dishes and some not-as-great dishes. The Good: The Wild Mushroom Chow Fun is very good, as well as the Carrot Dumplings to share. I also like the Edamame Dumplings, but if I had to choose, I would say that I favor the Carrot Dumplings. I also loved the Deviled Tuna Tartare as well as the Spiced Tofu and Cashews. The grand ballroom downstairs is the only place worth sitting at this chic/trendy restaurant. If they try to seat you upstairs don't let them...tell them you want to wait for a seat downstairs...they'll just stick you in the bar/lounge thing until a table opens up. That was our fatal error (allowing them to seat us upstairs) and I'm still bitter about it! Also, the Asian-fusion cuisine was good, but nothing mind-blowing. After reading so many positive Yelp reviews about the edamame dumplings I knew I had to order them (against my better judgement; after all, edamame dumplings?!?) and I was right. They're totally ew. Not my bag. The tuna tartar spring rolls, on the other hand, are worth ordering and re-ordering, not only because they're tiny, but also because they're freaking amazeballs! Pricey Asian Fusion restaurant but totally worth it in my opinion. The experience and ambiance of the place is modern and cool. There are several different themes running throughout the huge restaurant. I love the main dining room though I never had a chance to eat there. It's a long table that fits a ton of people and gorgeous chandeliers hanging from the high ceilings. My second favorite room is the library room. It's got an dark mysterious vibe to it. And my third favorite room is the bathroom. I know that sounds weird but they have this mirror thing going on in there that is cool. Besides the ambiance, the food is really darn good. I've eaten here 3x now, each with a different group (friends, company, & boyfriend) so I've got to try a lot of dishes! My top favorites: -King crab and lobster siu mai -Edamame dumplings -Chili rock shrimps (#1) -Dungeness crab sticky rice -Whole peking duck -Mongolian lamp chops And the list can go on... Have been here a few times and I must say it kind of feels like what you're paying for is the trendiness of the place because nothing stands out to me as THAT amazing, but they do have some pretty good dishes. The chili rock shrimp is great and not spicy at all and the tuna tartare spring rolls are AMAZING. I did not particularly like the king crab and lobster Shumai - I found it didn't have much flavor at all. There is no cheap drink here except water. In general I don't particularly like places that are really dark and really loud and Buddakan is the extreme of both, hence one less star. Also factoring into that is what I find to be somewhat awkward seating arrangements depending on where you sit - I once was seated right by the entrance at a giant square table where you could not hear or see anyone but the person directly to the side of you which was unfortunate and kind of defeats the purpose of bigger square/round tables compared to long ones. However in general it's a fun environment and while it was very loud I did find the music to be enjoyable! read more

I love coming to Buddakan with very high ceilings and a grand entrance. I like how they have seatings in the waiting area. The fusion dumplings are awesome and they have veg options as well! They also do have a range of non alcoholic options. I always feel it's a date place but I have been always here with corporate groups. read more

After all the hype and long wait, my boyfriend and I finally came to Buddakan to celebrate our anniversary. Ambience was trendy and chic as expected. It was disappointing that despite being on time for our reservation, we had to wait almost 30 mins for a table. The menu was extensive--we had a tough time deciding. Our waiter was friendly and gave lots of recommendations, but he felt a bit overbearing at times. To start we got the edamame dumplings (on the waiter's rec) and the chili rock shrimp. Both were amazing but the chili rock shrimp I was thinking about for days. Even my boyfriend, who hates shrimp, loved it. For our mains we got the ma la chicken, wild mushroom chow fun, and lobster fried rice. The ma la chicken is spicy and incredible--the chow fun complemented it. Now ironically the waiter warned us against the lobster fried rice with our dishes, but we didn't listen cause we were like hah we don't have to listen to him...but we wish we did! It wasn't bad but it did bring the meal down to be honest. We had the crying chocolate for dessert--also good. The cocktails were good, too. Can't remember the names right now or find them on the website. I came here on a Saturday night with a handful of girlfriends and I was immediately blown away at the hip ambiance and decor. The space is over-the-top huge and is decked out with exaggerated touches like larger than life chandeliers and electric-colored grates, all while sexy house music plays in the background as the score. The service was amazing and our waiter, Paul, was super knowledgeable and passionate about the must-haves on the menu, candidly sharing his opinions about what his favorite dishes were. All in all, Paul was not only friendly and witty, but he was oh-so-attentive and made sure that my party was well taken care of. As for the food, the edamame dumplings and the tuna tartare spring rolls were to die for!! Everything came out very timely and was plated meticulously. I visited here with my boyfriend and we both had a great time. The food was good and beautifully presented. We went with the seabags and lobster fried rice, both are excellent. I just went to Buddakan this past weekend. The food is good! BUT I've had better. I didn't think it was that unique. I don't think it was anything special and I guess they should be more creative on the dishes that they're making. After our whole meal, my cousin (the birthday girl) said that the dessert was the best part. So dessert is great at buddakan! lol. Portions are a good amount. My favorite was the taro lollipops and that was just dimsum. The waiter was on top if his game and the service was good. They changed out plates, utensils and wiped the tables. The place is very beautiful but also very crowded. And I think they only have ONE bathroom. A big and beautiful place with just one bathroom, really? There must be something wrong. What a phenomenal restaurant - we stopped in Sunday night for dinner. They were booked in the restaurant so we sat in the bar. The dining room is dramatic and exquisitely appointed. We enjoyed the shrimp and lobster chow fun, Singapore chili king crab and Peking duck fried rice - we were really impressed with everything. I made our reservations for Buddhakan about a month ago online. When making the reservations I specifically put in there and that it was my friends birthday and I wanted a cake with a candle and a saying Happy Birthday. I walked up to the long desk with 4 people at the check in desk. I was standing right in front of a guy and he was completely ignoring me for about 4 minutes or so, he kept looking in every direction except right in front of him, which left a sour taste to me,so then I moved over to the left of him to a girl who seemed surprised that I walked up to her and she asked if I had a reservation. I gave her my name and she told me to go to the lounge. I walked up the stairs only to be a little overwhelmed with the amount of people that were sitting or aoun's and it looked as if people were eating dinner because we saw appetizer is at teebles. It got a little overwhelming and we asked a bus boy if we could sit down. Soon after and maybe about 5 minutes and to us sitting down a lady comes up to us and asks if I have a reservation and what my name wise I gave her main name she looked up my name and asked if I ordered anything I stated no and then followed her down the stairs. The ambience of the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling down to the long rows of teebles was absolutely stunning. It couldn't have been a more romantic and beautiful setting. We were then seated in a Room that looked like a library. Which was good a great setting. Than our wonderful waitress named Jennica. She S the typical questions such as have you ever dined here before, and if she could recommend some things. We had a few questions about the menu and about the food. She was absolutely great. For our appetizer we ordered oxtail dim sum which was the most absolutely perfect dim sum I've ever had. The oxtail was absolute we mouth watering and moist. For our entree we ordered lobster fried rice, filet mignon, and monk fish. The lobster fried rice was great and it was everything that I expected it to be, Decent pieces of lobster chopped up in the fried rice. The monkfish was absolutely amazing I've never had monkfish before, It was fried in a chili sauce which was not too spicy. When you cut into the monkfish and you have that 1st bite it the literally teases Lake a tender piece of chicken. I was baffled and still a little confused when I was eating at because it had np fishy taste whatsoever. But I was really disappointed in the filet mignon.It had no taste whatsoever I only had half of a piece because it was completely bland. There was no salt or pepper on it. The sauce that was on the plate wasn't any help. And there was another source that was in a little jar that I poured over my piece of steak and it didn't help at all I didn't even finish it and I was going ask the waitress to take it back but i than decided not to do that. For dessert I ordered for my friend the weeping chocolate something and I ordered for myself a mango mousse cake which was absolutely phenomenal the presentation was absolutely stunning and it has pieces of mint leaves and along with the weeping chocolate something it were a looks absolutely amazing and my friend loved it because it had pistachio ice cream on top. Or all if you're looking to go out for birthday of some story or a your looking to celebrate any type of occasion I highly suggest coming here. But just beware of the check in process because some of the people look like they do not want to help you other than that I highly highly recommend requesting your waitress to be Jennica because she was absolutely everything and that I look for she was kind caring and she took her time with us even though it was quite busy for a Friday night. read more

You walk into a narrow hallway which opens up to the coatcheck/reservation checkin counter where they have an army of women attending to you. Its the kind of place you would expect to see in SATC (like TAO). The grandroom... is GRAND. And the smaller rooms just add to the whole of the place. The lighting is low but just enough to see your food and your friends. The place is loud but not enough to overwhelm your conversation. We already made reservations for Friday in 2 weeks in the big room :-) Food EXCELLENT and they serve you quick! We got 5 apps (tuna tartar, lettuce in beef, pork lollipops, scallion pancakes, edamame dumplings) and 3 entrees (short ribs, black cod, chicken) one bowl of rice and 3 desserts (chocolate mille feuille with caramelized banana, another chocolate, and a pineapple one). Drinks The drink selection was great... the wines, mixed... all of it was great Price And it all comes down to this. For 5 apps, 3 entrees, one side, 3 desserts, 8+ drinks = $299 (tax, no tip). An average of $75 per person. Not bad considering the food, service, and place. Overall Like I said, we are going back in 2 weeks. Its some of the best food we ave had in a while and worth the price. The mood was romantic, dark, with a subtle glow of light coming from the beautiful chandeliers. A perfect place to take someone on a romantic date. Dress to impress. Majority of the guests that I saw dining there was dressed nicely (dresses, ties, button ups). Although there was a couple here and there wearing jeans, it looked a bit undressed for this type of restaurant. My only complaint was since I was there for a business dinner with Google and YouTube and we constantly had to reference the internet, cell phone service was a bit spotty and there was no WiFi to compensate for the lack of cellphone connection.
