We visited to celebrate our anniversary. We had to wait for a few minutes despite having a reservation. However, we were seated at the bar and given a menu. Their large dining room is gorgeous. The atmosphere is beautiful and unique. I had one of the most amazing cocktails. I have ever had. It was light fresh and delicious. I am not a huge fan of Asian cuisine, but I enjoyed my meal. She ran a bit behind and was late for her 9:15 reservation unlike other similar restaurants in the city that have the "you snooze you lose, reservation cancelled" Buddakan was extremely accommodating. It's Meatpacking so it is pricey, but the quality of the food is outstanding and worth every penny. We opted out of the pre-fixe option (another plus, it's not mandatory if you're under 14 ppl) and went with family style dining. Brian our waiter suggested we order an individual entree, shareable sides and apps. Amongst my sister and niece we ordered the Lobster Egg Rolls, General Tso's dumplings, Dungeness Crab Sticky Rice, Shrimp & Lobster Chow Fun, Sweet & Crispy Jumbo Shrimp, and Singapore Chili King Crab all was well prepared and full of flavor not one disappointing dish. This was probably the best meal that I have ever eaten! Our reservations were fairly early, so there was no wait and we were seated in the main dining hall. The service and food were simply impeccable! My favorite dish of the meal was the chili rock shrimp; there was just a very unique taste about them. We also had the General Tso' Dumplings as a dim sum. The Chinese Sausage Fried Rice was delicious, as was the Sweet And Sour Chicken and the King Crab Hot Pot. All of these were split among 4 people, so we had a very good variety of food. The drinks were decent (highly recommend the chocolate martini) and dessert was also to die for! **Yay! I'm the 1,000th reviewer for Buddakan!** Came here for Jimmy C.'s birthday dinner and it was perfect! We started off with drinks. The drink names are so dreamy and ethereal! I ordered the Haze and then Virtue. Virtue was definitely the table favorite. We spent the majority of the time picking out the aloe vera and strawberry pieces. For appetizer we ordered the edamame dumplings. Being Asian, I generally don't like coming to Asian fusion places because I always feel I can get the same thing in Chinatown for a fifth of the price...BUT I've NEVER had edamame dumplings before! They taste almost like mochi very dense and creamy. Just a dumpling filled with ground up edamame - what a cool concept! For our meal a friend and I shared the lobster fried rice and the Alaskan black cod. Both were phenomenal. Big chunks of lobster in the fried rice and @ $16 wasn't that expensive! So we decided , why not have a cocktail. They presented us with the menu and i ordered the blush a lychee drink and my friend a drink named Vigor which she didn't like lol but drank it anyway. Way too pricey $20 subpar cocktails.. I've had Lychee cocktails that were top notch for less. Checked in on 10/1/2016. Maybe my bad experience can be attributed to the walk-in section of this trendy restaurant, which is also called the "Lounge". No reservations are taken for the lounge. Main dining section gets reserved early, so if you want to dine in to check all the hype, you need to step up your game and reserve a table in advance. That I did not! The lounge was overcrowded with people just trying to shout over the really loud music which was playing. I'm not even sure how they could shout over...the music was so loud. Cons: slow poor service, small tables (unless you are just 2 or having only drinks), loud, very loud music, food not matching the hype. My dining experience stars with good food. I did not even like the food. Here's what we ordered: 1) Crispy Cauliflower Lollipops - ok 2) Black Dragon Chicken - this was the worst dish out of all we ordered. Very bland, no flavor. 3) Chilled Udon Noodles - good. 4) Spiced eggplant and Tofu - ok 5) Bread pudding - excellent 6) Crying chocolate - excellent Desserts saved the night (and the 3 star rating)! Fancy and trendy Asian fusion spot with good food and service, not cheap! Get the edamame dumpling please if you love ravioli; get the general tso chicken dumpling if you crave for soup dumpling. They are both unique twists of traditional cuisine,and delicious!! As for the entree, the monk fish was my most favorite dish of the night - crispy and flavorful on the ouside, and juicy meat on the inside. The black cod ranked the second, I feel like it could be better though... The steak entree was quite disappointing - avoid for sure!! This was my 2nd NYE dinner here and the food, atmosphere and drinks are still fabulous! Last year's NYE had hats and decorations for the count down but didn't this year for some reason. Would've been nice but not a deal breaker because the food and drinks are still up to par and the edamame dumplings are like no other and a must try if you dine here! I got the lychee martini and it was perfect as well in addition to the rock shrimp I ordered. It was first come first serve seating again this year and even though they were packed around 9:30pm, there were still opportunities to grab a table, which was perfect for those who get late night starts and don't want to feel trapped with a dinner reservation on New Years Eve in case your plans change. Service was still good through the NYE chaos and we were able to leave around 10:45pm to make it across the street to meet with friends. The environment and workers were great. Make sure you have reservations. When you first walk in, they greet you and have you wait at their lounge/bar. We ordered their specialty drinks. I recommend the Benevolence, it's a tangy watermelon drink. Once we got seated, we were already greeted by our server. All the workers are welcoming and assist you as needed. We would ask the server what he recommends, and he was very helpful. We had the double tuna tartare for appetizer, peking duck, and chinese sausage fried rice. All were exceptional. Holy moly is Buddakan good! My friend takes her family here every time they are in town, and their raving reviews were making my trip there a necessity. We got to the restaurant (which is located right next to Chelsea Market) about 45 minutes before our reservation with plans to hang out near the bar. We were seated in the lounge and each ordered a glass of wine, but it ended up working out perfectly because we were seated not long after. Our waitress was so nice and quick, she wasted no time getting us some new drinks at our table. I wish I could remember the names of the specialty cocktails we ordered, but I don't - so I will recommend you the whole list of specialty cocktails because they certainly all have to be as good as the one I got!! Dinner was out in no time after we ordered. Our table started off with the edamame dumplings, lobster egg rolls, and general tsos dumplings. The edamame dumplings were so fantastic I probably could have eaten 10?? or maybe 18 is more realistic?? The lobster egg rolls were pretty dang good too, and although I don't eat meat, I fully trust the general tsos dumplings were just as good. For the main meal, we went with the coconut curry fried rice and the spiced eggplant tofu. The rice was everything you want your rice to be and more. And to this day I am still dreaming about that eggplant and tofu. We weren't at all ready to end things there, so after devouring all of that, we decided to order a round of mochi donuts. What can I say about this place! Definitely one of my go to places because it never disappoints. Very nice ambiance, great place to take someone you're trying to impress be it in-laws, out of towners or a first date..ok maybe more like a second or third date. As far as the food goes the lobster egg rolls and jade shrimp dumplings are awsome. The grilled Alaskan Black Cod just melts in your mouth like butter. The lobster fried rice if good though it can leave a little something to be desired. The speacialty cocktail menu is great as well and I don't recall ever having poor service. The food is amazing, particularly the Edamame Dumpling appetizer ($11) and the Whole Peking Duck ($44). Arrive about a half hour before you reservation so you and see-and-be-seen in the front lounge area. There are a number of specialty drinks around the $12 range that are very fun. If you are seated upstairs, be sure to take a peek into the massive and cavernous downstairs dining room, with ceilings more than 2-stories high and filled with a long banquet-like table. I am pretty picky when it comes to Asian food, since I am pretty spoiled by my mother's cooking and not to mention a lot of my friends' mothers home cooking. When R was trying to figure out where to take me, since I wasn't into R's first choice of Italian. R was in between Morimoto, Buddhakan and Momofuku. I was definitely not a fan of Momofuku, since their food doesn't really cater to an Asian palate. R called to see if you need a resy and the wait for two was over an hour or so. We ended up taking our chance and went there anyways. R's been to Buddhakan in Philly and really enjoys their food. Overpriced Asian food is really not my thing because you can find better tasting ones for 75% less and not to mention you can feed 4 other people along with it. But I didn't want to be difficult so I said why not try it. Since I never been here before I let R do the ordering and just voiced my opinion when the waitress suggested the Edamame Dumpling. I like Edamame but I couldn't picture myself eating it in a wrapper since I am guessing it would be in paste form. R got a Chimay and I opted for prosecco rather than their specialty drinks. R ordered the following: Crispy Calamari Salad green apples, cashews, miso vinaigrette - this was probably my most favourite dish. I really love the miso vinaigrette. Really Yummy. Peking Duck Roll crispy radish, hoisin - good but don't think they were worth 12 bucks. Chili Rock Shrimp toasted ginger - decent...wish it would have more of a kick though. Spicy Crab & Shan Tong Noodles jumbo lump crab, spicy szechuan sauce - good but you didn't really feel the numbness from the szechuan spice. Didn't get dessert since there wasn't really anything that stood out besides the Yuzu Sorbet and R's not into Asian desserts. Well now that I have actually set food in the ultra-trendy venue that serves delicious Asian food, I can say for myself that it is pretty hot. All of the dishes we ordered were pretty much worth the money - and there is a large selection of things to choose from on the menu. Buddakan is a great place to get together to have that NYC experience. The decor is trendy, the music is good, and the scene is really happening. You can make reservations or you can drop in and try to get a table at the lounge area. The restaurant was huge so it wasn't at all hard to get a table in the lounge area. Drinks were pretty expensive Manhattan style, but they were really good, especially the Fate - pineapple, elderflower, prosecco. We shared 4 different dishes - pork belly with pork buns, taro lollipops, deviled tuna tartare, and the scallion pancakes with shredded pork on top. I wasn't expecting much from chinese food at Buddakan, but I have to admit I was pretty surprised when it was delicious, chinese, and with a modern twist. I didn't like the tuna tartare - I thought the flavor of the tuna on top of the avocado didn't have much flavor and then when you picked up some of the spicy mayo sauce it overpowered the dish too quickly. Shredded Pork on top of the scallion pancake - I thought to myself, what can they do to make a $2 dollar scallion pancake any better than chinatown? Well, add a well marinated,melt in your mouth shredded pork on top, that's what! I had two pieces because it was so delicious and there were only 4 pieces and 3 girls... Pork Belly with Pork Bun - The pork belly was amazing. It was buttery and soft and melted in my mouth. Coupled with the pork bun, it was a delicious, fatty, little delight. Taro Lollipops - Not as good as some dim sum places in chinatown, but I have to give it a 5 for presentation. I think the minced meat could have had more flavor, and there def should have been more taro for contract. Drinks - Cosmo - I have had better. I have made better. I had to ask the second round to be stronger because I couldn't taste any alcohol. Normally I wouldn't mind, but since I was paying 15 dollars for that cosmo, I wanted to make sure I got at least half a cup of grey goose. Fate - Elderflower, Prosecco, and Pineapple. I think this drink speaks for itself. How could it not be good? Pineapple and Sparkly? Yes and Yes. I will definitely come back next time I have some out of town visitors to impress. I came with a friend of mine who said she always wanted to try the place and heard rave reviews about it, infact she mentioned that one had to to book more than a month ago(probably because of the Sex and the City toast scene that was shot here). Anyhow guess I made before the 5 min deadline and we were asked to sit in the lounge. Again the whole part of the scene creation thing, its just 6PM there is plenty of space inside, hey but you gotta wait. Luck enough it wasn't to long and we were escorted to our table. Well would like to take a moment here for the ambiance and decor, since while walking by and sitting down trying to drink the setup. I think it is worth dropping by for that. Our waiter seemed like a decent guy and explained how would the dishes come out and the portion and their signature dishes. I started out with nicely done Fever cocktail made of mezcal, lime jalepeno, pomegranate, had the nice sharp flavor of jalepeno and a nice suttle tangy taste of pomegranate. The Edamame Dumplings were pretty nicely done. Completely dissatisfied with the main course, got the monkfish and the mushroom noodles both of them turned to be below mediocre. Infact for the noodles we are being served the instant noodles, is it wrong to expect some nicer taste and flavor in a classy place. The fish seemed fresh but the sauce wasn't any good, the peanuts were cooked properly, simple disregard for the taste and flavor. I've never been a fan of Asian fusion -- I've always thought that it was overpriced and overrated and not worth it. But Buddhakan, you are absolutely AMAZING. Dishes are served family-style here, and each dish is either a twist on a traditional Chinese dish or served with traditional Chinese seasonings and spices. I also highly recommend that you try out some of their cocktails; Charm and Fate were delicious. Our party of three ordered a plethora of delicious food that left us stuffed and wanting to lick the plates clean: -- Edamame Dumplings -- Hoisin Glazed Pork Belly -- Chili Rock Shrimp -- Kung Pao Monkfish -- Vegetarian Rice -- Dessert: Crying Chocolate I have absolutely no complaints about any of the food. when i imagine trendy "scene" places in NY, the images that come to mind totally fit the interiors and patrons of Buddakan. Ridiculously dim, full of folks dressed to-the-nines and more-than-ambient conversation on a Monday night, I could only imagine what it would be like on the weekend. the food definitely delivers. their signature edamame dumplings were weirdly ravioli-like with their cream/truffle infusion. the ahi spring rolls were my personal faves. as much as i dislike seafood, i am a sucker for a good ahi. continuing through our meal, the cod was deliciously sweet and flaky. the waiter forgot to bring us the filet, so sadly i have no news on that front. the desserts however, were definitely the piece de resistance. that crying chocolate is a must, and the white chocolate passionfruit mousse held such great contrasts between the merengue, mousse and sorbet. the only thing holding me back from a beaming five stars would be the service. although our waiter was more than friendly, he did totally omit one of our dishes, and we had to ask 3x for the check. read more

A group of 6 of us came for dinner for my friend's 24th birthday. We had reservations for about 3 weeks prior and we wrote in the reservation a request for the long table and that it was her birthday. We didn't get the long table, not a problem we got seated at a 6 person and it was fine. The appetizers were really good, especially the pork buns. However, at 8:40, only an hour into our reservation a man in a suit with a headset (the manager? The bouncer?) came over and told us we "had enough time" and we had to give up the table. At that point we'd been waiting 20 minutes for the birthday dessert to come out. With the speed of the other food, we were already kind of surprised at how long it was taking for the dessert, as if the waiter forgot about us. Then, we told the guy in the suit we'd only been there an hour and it was a birthday celebration he stuttered like he didn't expect us to talk back and left. He came back like 10 minutes later and apologized and gave us "free dessert for the whole table" but they left off one of the desserts we ordered and only gave us 3 and we still waited over 20 minutes for the dessert (40 minute wait for dessert after food). The floating matcha dessert was alright but not as good as the rest of the food. (If you have a texture problem don't get it, get the lava cake) If I went back it would have to be like carry out or something because saying "you've had enough time" came off like he was pushing us around because we're all girls in our 20's. read more

We recently celebrated at Buddakan with a party of nine, and I must commend their exceptional handling of food allergies. My son has life-threatening allergies to all nuts and seeds and we were concerned especially since many dishes at the restaurant contain sesame oil and seeds. However, our worries were quickly alleviated when Chef Zachary met with us with a menu and highlighter in hand. He sat down with us, took meticulous notes of my son's allergies, and highlighted all the dishes my son could safely enjoy. His knowledge of the menu and ingredients was impressive and detailed, providing me with a level of comfort I've seldom felt in restaurants concerning food allergies. My son could indulge without any concerns and that made the meal so enjoyable for us all. I highly recommend Buddakan for their delicious food, fantastic ambiance and their flawless system that ensures a safe and enjoyable meal from server to chef and back to the customer. read more

3.5 to 4 stars. To be honest, I did NOT expect to like this place. I tend to gravitate towards down-home, authentic Asian food, not fusion in a nightclub-for-stockbrokers environment. But I ended up enjoying most of the dishes overall! Our Peking duck was gorgeous. The skin was insanely crispy. I don't think I've ever had duck skin that crispy before; it literally shattered in our mouths and made little crackling sounds! Really fun to eat with the little pancake things it comes with. The meat was butter-soft. It lacked that authentic Peking duck flavor, but that is to be expected as this is a fusion place after all. Our veg dish was inventive and perfectly cooked. I would highly recommend passing on all the dumplings and noodles however. Really mediocre and over-priced. I've had far better in Chinatown for a fraction of the cost. Strangely enough, what ended up being the star of the night for us were the desserts. Don't miss the souffle ! Perfection! read more

This place has an upscale romantic ambiance. The high ceilings and beautiful chandeliers make this the perfect place for date night or even a night out with the girls. Everything I had here was delicious. The short rib and scallion pancake is a MUST, the oxtail dumplings OMG and the General Tso's dumplings YES. Their crab stir fry noodle also is unforgettable. First, realize that you are not paying for a meal. You are paying the rent of this over-sized palace. The food is good, but not worth the $. You can get better or equal food elsewhere for a lot less. You're paying for the scene. The setting. And the setting is loud. I'm a peace and quiet kind of guy. Why do you want to scream during dinner conversation? Unless it's a business associate or date that you really don't want to talk with. And if you're a large group, you're loud enough! But I realize there are people who want the noise. So bring it on. The lamb chops, excellent. The mushroom chow fun- gloppy and syrupy. Chili chicken, moist and bland. All appetizers just OK. The service for the prices should have been a lot better! I discovered Buddakan in 2010 and it has been a fav ever since. Decor is so NYC chic and the cocktails are always top shelf. The bartenders / mixologists they hire are always excellent at their craft. Well dressed high end crowd, good music spinning. It does get pretty crowded but it's a great place for a drink. Really good Asian fusion if you decide to stay and eat. The Chilean sea bass rolls and chili rock shrimp appetizers are delicious. The Wok noodles with prawns and mushrooms is a go-to for dinner. It's an impressive place all around, everything you'd expect a NYC hotspot to be. The location is perfect too- right in Chelsea, meat packing is mere blocks away, a hidden speak easy down the block and Tao downtown is across the street. Lived up to the hype, which was a pleasant surprise. Had a great meal with a group of 7. Service was good and the food came out timely and hot. We did the second tier of the tasting menu. Most everything was delicious - favorites: Apps: edamame dumplings, Cantonese spring rolls, chilled udon noodles. Mains: black pepper beef, sweet and crispy jumbo shrimp, glazed Alaskan black cod Desserts: all were amazing. Oooh, this place is sexy. I was visiting the bf in NYC and he recommended Buddakan because of their legendary edamame dumplings. Reasons why I love Buddakan: 1) Reservations: Surprisingly, not too difficult to book! I made a reservation for 2 for a Friday night at 7:15pm and a table was readily available one week in advance. Niiice. 2) Decor/Service: Did you know the Sex and The City movie was filmed here?! Not that this was the major draw, but man oh man, the interior design of Buddakan makes you feel like you're stepping into royalty. Beautiful colors on the wall, large dining areas where you're not breathing on the diners next to you, I mean, just check out the photos for yourself. The restaurant's foyer makes you feel like you're checking into a hotel in Vegas or stepping into a nightclub. Techo/pop music permeates the room, and the uber-friendly staff don't make you feel uncomfortable one bit for wearing jeans and sneakers (hey, I was coming from my 9-5!) while everyone else is dressed like fashion show attendees. ***Cool perk: They have a coat check! Coming from Cali, I hadn't experienced that before, so it was nice that I was able to check in my laptop bag since I was coming from work. 3) Food (duh): As many others have mentioned, EDAMAME DUMPLINGS ARE A MUST. The edamame is grinded up and stuff into rice paper dumplings wrap. Very simple dish, no special sauces needed to make this delicious. We also ordered the Scallion Pancakes w/Braised Beef Short Rib -- the combo of the salty beef + sweet green apple is such an unique taste. For veggies, Cauliflower Stir Fry was spicy and sweet, and paired well with the Charred Filet of Beef that we ordered as our main entree. As for dessert, do NOT leave Buddakan without trying the CRYING CHOCOLATE. Sweet coffee ice cream paired with bitter dark chocolate ganache and ground coffee. What a sweet caffeine high! read more
