I'm resorting to made up words as it was a mind blowing experience for me - the ambiance, the superbly interesting decor, the cavernous interior, none of these were in my expectations, even after having done a quick scan through previous yelp reviews. Now, inexpensive - this place is not. But it did give our large group an evening to remember. The drinks were good, the gastropub-esque presentations on every dish were a feast to the eyes, and the flavor and perfection of the dishes were an equally impressive feast to the palate. Stand-out dishes included the sushi/sashimi omakase, the bone marrow fried rice, the cod on stick, the roast duck, and the wagyu sliced steak. Bougie vibes on a Thursday evening! My bestie was in town, and we visited Tao for dinner. Lychee martinis and Asian delights abound! Reservations were relatively easy to score. She was raving about the Fish in Sand, which apparently she and I had at Tao in Vegas many moons ago (I did not recall). Given it was Vegas, my lack of memory was understandable. Well, we ordered it (again) NYC style and it was sensational. The textures and flavor were spot-on. We also enjoyed a Rainbow Roll, a Salmon Avocado Roll, and the Chicken Lollipops. It was the perfect amount of food considering we planned to bar-hop a bit afterward. It feels like a Saturday night here, regardless of the day of the week. I've heard a lot of great things about Tao from their night life to their delicious food and drinks. It may have been an off night for my friend and I when we came here for dinner. We had a reservation for a Wednesday night graduation celebration. Upon entering, were greeted and ushered promptly to our table. We took in the massive Buddha centerpiece and stared with awe at the iridescent lights that surrounded the statue. Having already ordered apps from another restaurant, we dove right into the entrees. We had an attentive waited who recommended my friend the "Big Apple Sour" ($20) which she thoroughly enjoyed. The disappointment came from the entrees that were served - everything from the vegetable fried rice ($22, not shown) to the drunken lobster pad thai ($38) to the beef mongolian ($58) was doused in oil that made the dishes difficult to enjoy. The beef mongolian had a strong sour/tart taste which overpowered the dish. I did like the blends of sweet and sour of the pad thai with a good amount of lobster pieces. Before you know it, the three of us were going through the doors, got checked-in & was placed near one of the seated areas. Tao Downtown Staff are so friendly, & ensured that we were comfortable. Tao Downtown has beautiful decor including murals, cool lighting / fixtures, etc. The nightclub is downstairs & it was packed when we arrived. We had a reservation and still weren't seated for another 30ish minutes despite the restaurant being pretty empty on a Sunday night. We finally got seated at 10:30 and I kid you not we didn't receive our food until midnight. Any time we asked our server for an update, she'd say 10 more mins and time would continue to pass, no food, no one checking in on our table. Once I finally got my food, I was so hungry that my stomach hurt, making it hard to eat. But I got the seafood fried rice and the crispy shrimp dumplings. Tao is ancient history as far as NYC's restaurant scene goes. The interior is still striking but everything else is well behind the times. On a weeknight it seemed to mainly be populated by corporate diners and those who wear athleisure brands while they eat. I'm assuming that people who know what they're doing but still want a clubby vibe go to Crane Club now (which is excellent!). We had five different premium sushi rolls. They were just okay, not memorable at all. Peking duck was good (portion size meh). Lo mein was bad, sauce was sludge. Mongolian beef was terrible quality and overseasoned. Salt and pepper shrimp, or something like that, was decent. Dessert platter for $65 was the show-stopper. Unbelievable value. Makes me wonder if we actually were served the $130 version. Service was meh. Switched from sparkling to tap water after one bottle was depleted without asking us. Annoyingly, either they misplaced my credit card or I left it in the holder. I do want to say first my review is very biased based because of my food allergies (egg, soy and peanuts). If not, it would've gotten a 5 star. First, this restaurant was one of the best looking restaurants if not the best out of all I've been too and it was huge! The service was amazing especially from the gentleman we had. I forgot his name but he definitely deserves a raise, he stay making sure we were good the entire night, even as we were heading (even though he's not obligated to). The drinks weren't strong but they tasted really good which made me not care about amount of alcohol in it. Make sure you have your physical id for drinks as they won't accept a picture. The food wad the only problem for me just because of my allergies. If you have an egg, peanut, and soy allergy (especially on the egg and soy), this place may not be the spot for you. I literally only had two options to choose from - a $98 wagyu steak (and in this economy hard pass) or branzino. The fish I had was okay but I would've preferred something with more flavor or something as good as everyone else's. It could be a bit off putting seeing you paid $35 for a thin fish and white rice and then seeing everyone else dish. Everyone else though did say that their food was delicious and would definitely eat here again. I went for the AYCE brunch on a Sunday. It was challenging to get a reservation for the brunch; we had to reserve almost 3 weeks out. There is a dress code so please check before going. The restaurant is beautiful, dimly lit and huge. The seating was slightly tight but was not a huge issue. The music was kind of loud in my opinion. The service was quite good with waiters checking to see if you needed a plate taken away and bringing water without being called. The glass of water they had served me was chipped and the staff had it replaced immediately and asked if I was OK. I was fine so there was no issue there and I appreciated that they prioritized my safety. The buffet had some interesting items like eggs bacon and cheese spring rolls and breakfast bao buns. I did find it odd that they didn't have soup options; they had 1 ramen station. They had some dimsum choices which was appreciated. The star of the brunch was definitely the raw bar. They had 3 types of Nigiri and sashimi and 4 or so types of sushi rolls with vegetarian options. They also had sizeables cocktail shrimps and oysters. Everything offered at the raw bar was fresh and did not taste fishy at all. I found that the raw bar, steak and dimsum were the most notable and bang for buck items, though my partner did enjoy the sliders. That said, the buffet is $75, and with tax and tip it will be closer to $100. If you are exclusively looking to eat sashimi and sushi you might be better off at a cheaper AYCE sushi place. The appeal for me would be the great looking venue and having a variety of Asian inspired options together with the raw bar. They brought out a complementary anniversary candle on a single strawberry with a chocolate decoration. I appreciated the gesture and the small size because there was enough dessert at the dessert station anyways. I want to give a huge thanks to the staff who let me in again after my meal was over because I had left something behind after having realized it more than an hour later. Came to Tao Downtown for my cousin's birthday with a large group, and even brought my one-year-old, who surprisingly loved the music and was mesmerized by the changing visuals on the giant Quan Yin statue. The space is dark, dramatic, and buzzing with energy. It's definitely crowded, but that lively atmosphere is part of the charm. Service was smooth and attentive, which we appreciated given the size of our party. We shared a variety of dishes: crispy short rib bao buns (a standout), chicken gyozas, and the egg roll to start. For entrees, we had the honey glazed salmon (delicious but small), filet mignon "Tokyo" style, grilled branzino, vegetable lo mein, baby bok choy, and the BBQ duck fried rice ( which was very flavorful). Everything at Tao Downtown was absolutely delicious. Every single dish we ordered exceeded expectations. From the perfectly crispy spicy tuna to the melt-in-your-mouth short rib bao buns (which I'm still thinking about), the food was just phenomenal. Even the vegetable fried rice, though simple, was so flavorful and addictive that no one could stop eating it. We ordered so much that I can't even remember it all, but every bite was amazing. The giant fortune cookie for dessert was next-level--crunchy, creamy, and seriously otherworldly. Service was overall very good; our waiter was incredibly kind and accommodating, especially for a friend with a gluten allergy. He walked her through every dish and made sure she knew what was safe for her to eat, which we really appreciated. The only downside was that when they cleared our table, they whisked the food away so quickly we didn't even have a chance to ask for it to-go, even though there was plenty left. The atmosphere was vibrant and stylish, with dim lighting that made for perfect photo ops (even though flash photography isn't technically allowed but everyone was still sneaking it in). I dined here with my family for a Father's Day dinner. You have to make reservations and it's like $10 per person to reserve and you would have to cancel by 10 PM the night before in order to get a full refund, so make sure your number is solid. They also have a day club, a nightclub, and a happy hour. Parking: there's street parking or valet service at garages nearby. The atmosphere is low lighting and very loud. The decor is amazing! They have a 20 foot tall statue. I think Called Quan Yin.If you need readers or wear glasses, you will need the flashlight on your phone to see the menu. Our food was served family style, and they gave us a menu with the courses: For Starters we had hot edamame and shi shito peppers, the edamame was good. I don't think anybody really ate the Shi Shito peppers. We had sushi which was chef selection. Most of the rolls were good. The grade was ok. I've had better. For the small plates, we had chicken, satay, bamboo, steamed vegetable dumplings, and chicken wing lollipops. My favorite was a chicken wing lollipops. They were very tasty. The chicken Shante was OK and I did not care for the steamed vegetable dumplings. Other family members really enjoyed them. Third course was land sky and sea, which consisted of crispy orange chicken, cashew chicken, beef Mongolian, honey glaze, salmon, and miso roasted Chilean, Seabass. My favorites from above was the Seabass, the cashew chicken and the crispy orange chicken. The salmon didn't have that great of a taste, nor did the Mongolian beef. The flavor was off for me. The sides consisted of vegetable fried rice, shrimp lo mein, noodles, and triple pork fried rice. The lo mein was my favorite and I did not partake in the pork fried rice, but I think everyone enjoyed all of the sides. Now, the desserts were chef's selection and OMG! It consisted of ice cream, sorbet, yuzu donuts, mango sticky rice and giant fortune cookies that you break open and then the inside there was a fluffy mousse and it came with different dipping sauces which were like chocolate caramel and I'm not sure what the other ones were, but most of the above was delicious. I did not care for the mango sticky rice. It just really didn't have much of a flavor and I love mango sticky rice. Overall the food came out very timely and was delicious for everyone. There was so much food left over that we did take away. The service in my opinion was OK. They were slow to bring us straws, water and any other drinks we requested, that we had to ask twice. In my opinion I think for the size of our party I think they should've had more people to stick around and make sure our drinks were taken care of. So I got suck into the hype from instagram and youtube about their Endless Brunch. Lobster, crab legs, large raw oysters, all kinds of sushi...etc. at the brunch buffet. $75/pp. I thought if they had all that it would be a terrific deal plus I love raw bars. The sushi was good but nothing special. The oysters were kinda small and the taste was a bit bland. No crab or lobster. Lots of sliders chicken, shrimp and burger. Chicken Saté was ok. Dumplings I think were frozen and steamed. I buy them from asian markets and they had similar taste and quality. Rice and noodles were very salty. They also had crispy pork and filet mignon? sirloin? (very tough). The meat quality was not great and was a bit too rare. They also had a ramen station which I did not try. The dessert bar was a bit disappointing. The chocolate fountain, don't think there was much chocolate in it. It was brown and very sweet but I think it was imitation. I've seen and tasted better on cruises. Some puddings and cookies. What a fun birthday dinner! 3 friends & I celebrated together last night and enjoyed every moment & every bite of food. Tao is celebrating 25 years with a discounted menu (separate from the dinner menu), & offering $50 in credits when you sign up for rewards. $25 of it was credited to this dinner, & I plan to return in time to use the other $25. You can use the credits at any of their venues, including the club. I learned all of this from Ryan, who made our evening a true 5-star Tao experience. Ryan's knowledge of the menu and accommodating a peanut allergy and my vegan-diet friends should set an example for others in the hospitality industry. Thank you, Ryan!!! We started with Tao-tinis, which I normally wouldn't try, but my friend recommended, and I truly enjoyed it. This cocktail was on the discounted menu & had huge fresh raspberries that made it the perfect sweet but tart treat. We ended up ordering a second round of them. I had the branzino for dinner, and we shared the tacos & 2 dumpling platters so everyone could try each flavor--you need these dumplings. We had a couple of other sides and I really liked the veggie fried rice. My friends and I ordered sake bombs after dinner, and although I could not really finish the beverage, I had a ton of fun pushing the shots into the beer glasses, and blowing out a candle atop the sake bombs with a strawberry and 'Happy Birthday' monogrammed piece of chocolate. Went for dinner with my friends, and as I was walking in, I took a hit from my vape. The security guard immediately said, "If I see you do that again, I'm gonna throw you out of here." Mind you, I'm 24 years old--I don't need another adult speaking to me like that. I would've much preferred if he'd simply said, "Hey, you can't do that in here," which would've been totally fair. What made it worse was that when I mentioned to my friends that I thought the comment was annoying, the security guard came back over and threatened me again just for talking about the interaction. Anyway, I shrugged it off, and we went inside and sat down. The music was pretty loud, which normally wouldn't have bothered me, but the DJ was jumping from Bob Marley to Rihanna in the span of three seconds, so the vibe felt all over the place. Our server came over, took our drink order, and asked for IDs. One of my friends had accidentally left his ID at my apartment and asked if he could show a picture instead. The server said no, which is completely understandable--that's the law and restaurant policy, so no issue there. The strange part came when our drinks arrived. I let my friend have a sip of mine, and the server came back over, crouched down, and started lecturing him about not drinking. It just felt unnecessarily awkward and over the top. As for the food, the appetizers were actually pretty good, but the fried rice I ordered was extremely dry and mediocre, especially considering the price. Overall, this was my third time coming here, and I don't think I'll be back. It's an expensive place, and between the rude interaction at the door, the awkward service, and the disappointing food, it just wasn't a good experience. read more
