Jamie W and I had not been to Manhattan's Chinatown in ages, and when we went, we usually ended up gorging at subterranean favorites like Hop Kee and Wo Hop. This time we found ourselves in another subterranean restaurant, but this was more stylishly upscale and just a few doors down from Nom Wah Parlor on colorfully painted Doyers St. We weren't here for a special occasion, but we did have matinee tickets for "Death of a Salesman", so why not? We made a reservation at noon on Sunday right when they opened and got seated in a roomy booth. Unlike most spots in Chinatown, they have quite a spacious dining area with a fully stocked bar in the entryway. It didn't take us long for us to decide on the seven-course $38 Dim Sum Banquet Menu. It seemed like a deal to us, and no arbitrary decisions had to be made by us. First up was a bowl of Wood Ear Mushrooms marinated with red wine vinegar. The sesame seeds and celery provided a nice contrasting crunch (Photo 8). Next came an elegant teacup filled with their rich, clear Supreme Broth and populated with Scallop & Shrimp Wonton (Photo 10). The combination of the broth and seafood elevated this deceptively simple course. The Shanghainese Vegetable Spring Roll was a predictable side step with the deep fried cover a bit heavy even with an offsetting red vinegar gastrique (Photo 7). The Braised Black Pepper Oxtail Buns were the tastiest of the dumplings, especially with the pickled chili relish enhancing the meaty flavor (Photo 6). Arriving next was the Ham Sui Gok, a trio of fried glutinous rice dumplings filled with roast duck and radish and accompanied by Fujian dipping sauce (Photo 4). The last of the savory items on the menu was the enticing Squid Ink Noodle Box made with handmade noodles soaked in squid ink. They were then mixed with sliced shiitake mushrooms, garlic, salted seaweed, and chili (Photo 9). It was an intriguing blend of flavors with a salty finish. We decided to add one additional item, the $12 Crispy Eggplant with Sichuan peppercorn, peanuts, and sesame seeds (Photo 5). It was spicy, crunchy, and satisfying. Our meal ended with a shared slice of the Creme Brulee Custard Tart (Photo 3). A tasty treat, but it was strange we had to split it. Came here for my birthday celebration, beware that there is a 50$ cake fee (any size). We were seated at the top, not the main dining room, which was unfortunate, but the environment was still gorgeous. However, the service was incredibly slow, it took nearly 2.5 hours for all the main entries to come out (we were seated at 8:30 and didn't finish our meal until almost 11). Came here for a birthday dinner, the restaurant was lovely and felt like an escape from New York City into an intimate establishment far away, amazing ambiance. The service was extremely attentive and caring. The food was just okay, in my opinion, for the portion size the value just wasn't there. I also didn't like that the items didn't come out together, but eating my meats with my sides is a personal preference. From the outside, it looks like a small place but it's a really big restaurant and very intimate low setting light, which I always enjoy the romance. The food was delicious. We were visiting NYC and stopped in for dinner--initially couldn't get a reservation, but one opened up on Resy through Global Dining (definitely worth it). Everything we ordered was fire. We had the Shanghai spring rolls, pork dumplings, oxtail buns, Johnny fried rice, gai lan, sweet & sour crispy prawns, and the half roast duck--honestly enough food for two days. The standout dishes were the Johnny fried rice, loaded with shrimp and pork floss (easily a meal on its own), and the half roast duck, which was cooked perfectly. The decor is beautiful and the overall vibe is on point--the music selection alone deserves recognition (someone clearly curated it with intention). My only critique is the timing of the food. Dishes are brought out as they're prepared, but that wasn't communicated to us. The duck ended up coming out just as we were getting ready to leave. That said, it made for a great lunch the next day. I've never heard of this place but my friends took me here for dinner last night! I felt like a celebrity very hidden in china ton, the block is closed off to cars and feels very mysterious in a way. We had a reservation and as soon as we walked in we were seated right away although the full group wasn't there. Unfortunately, we were tucked away in a cramped room behind the hostess stand, which completely killed the celebratory atmosphere. I asked if we could be seated in the main room and was told there was a 2 hour wait to be seated there...even though we had a reservation. When the table next to us was seated, I heard, "why the heck are we being seated back here?" (So, if you look at pics of the main dining room and are excited to sit there, don't count on it.) While the food was actually pretty good, the service was a major letdown. Our rice didn't arrive until we were nearly finished with our entrees. For a meal featuring several spicy dishes, waiting that long for a staple like rice is a huge oversight. Great flavors, but the disorganized service and poor seating ruined the experience. Finally got to try out Chinese Tuxedo on a recent chilly evening in December. Spicy cucumbers (green tomatoes and sesame): yum! These had a heat that really lingered in the throat and a nice sesame flavor. Super crunchy! Hamachi crudo (ponzu brown butter, black beans, rice pearls): simple and excellent. Allowed the freshness of the fish to shine like a good crudo should, but the sweet soy marinade was a delicious complement, and I loved the crunchy little rice balls on top. Crispy pork and chive dumplings (pan-fried lattice style dumplings, aromatic black vinegar, chili oil): fun presentation with the crunchy lattice on top (apparently this is a common way to serve dumplings in Chinese cuisine). The black vinegar added a deep, tangy pungency to the sauce that felt unique. The dumplings themselves were really good and had and excellent pan-fried crispiness. Johny fried rice char siu (shrimp, pork floss & chili shelter): just a great, garlicky version of fried rice with sweet, tender pork, shrimp, and I think chives and typhoon shelter on top. Squid ink noodles (pan-tossed with shiitake mushrooms, salted seaweed, garlic, chili): we took some leftovers home and I liked this even better on day two. These were really delicious: extremely garlicky, maybe even a tad too salty/garlicky? But still very enjoyable and I loved the spongy texture of the noodles. Creme brûlée custard tart: I had something similar at the Tyger, so I knew I would like this. Delicious custard and pie crust with the sweet-burnt brûlée topping you know and love. Cocktails: I thought they were good, but a bit uneven. -five points sour (mezcal unión, chinese gooseberry, melon, agave, lime): my favorite of the ones I tried, and I would recommend it to mezcal lovers! The mezcal and melon flavors came through the most. -Mott Collins (fords gin, pear, lemon, chinese five spice, ume, seltzer): this didn't work as well for me. I like five spice, but I thought it was a bit overpowering here. The texture was also a little... thick and gritty? I don't think I would get it again. As we were wrapping up dinner, we inquired with one of the various staff who had been checking in with us about the cocktail bar downstairs. He kindly checked for us and was able to get us a table since a group had just left. Time Went: 4pm on a Saturday, Summertime This place was a little hard to find. I've been to Chinatown many times, but this place was very elusive and hidden in a random side street. Once you walk inside, it feels like a totally different place. It has a bit of a darker atmosphere, but it's very low romantic lighting. Now, I took a little bit of time since actually going to remember every single thing I tried, but the pictures I took should help. Everything I tried was amazing, but the winner was the oxtail bao bun. GURL! Bruh. I am not playing when I say that I'm not sure if I can ever have oxtail again because if it doesn't taste like this, I'll be angry. Was able to get a seat for two without a reservation. The place feels more like a scene than a destination for great Chinese food. The space is cool, buzzy, and clearly designed to impress--and the cocktails are genuinely excellent. But the food itself is mostly just fine: edible, competent, and heavily catered to a Western palate. Prices feel inflated, as if you're paying more for rent and overhead than what's on the plate. The pea shoots were especially disappointing--little more than soy and ginger, tasting like something you'd expect at a PF Chang's rather than a restaurant at this price point. Overall, it's a stylish spot for drinks, but hard to justify if you're coming primarily for the food. PS. My new favorite date night in China Town! Chinese Tuxedo is located on a picturesque street in China town. You feel like you're in a movie set. When you enter, you're greeted with a cozy atmosphere. There's a long bar, dining on the first level, more private dining section behind the bar, and open seating on the lower level. There are only two bathrooms so, be patient :) Food has been amazing every-time I've come. I'm still thinking about the crispy pork and Johnny fried rice. The oxtail bun keeps me coming back. The place felt high class and even the bathrooms had thick hand towels. We ordered: Braised Black Pepper Oxtail Bun (1 for $7) - comes with a side of picked chili relish, which complimented the sweet tender shredded meat. Crispy Eggplant (3 for $12) - included Sichuan pepper corn, peanut, and sesame. I wish there was more eggplant inside. Exterior was fried well and coated in sweet and savory sauce. Stir Fried Tofu Puffs ($22) - included mushrooms, green scallion, bok choy, and chili. This was too salty. Thank goodness I had a side of rice. Tuxedo Style Dan Dan Noodles ($19) - included eryngli mushroom, sesame dressing, sou cured yolk, and minced meat. The noodles were a little undercooked. Mild flavor. The last item we wanted to order was the Crispy Pork and Chive Dumplings, but our server convinced us to get the special instead, which was a braised pork dish ($29). I adore Chinese Tuxedo! I came here for a birthday and our party was seated immediately and offered drink menus. As a mezcal enthusiast, I enjoyed a glass of the Five Points Sour, which was delicious. My table ordered a variety of apps and platters to share. Among the highlights were their spicy cucumber cold appetizer, their dumplings and their Dan Dan Noodles. All of the dishes were unique and interesting to eat. Thankfully the staff was helpful in answering all our questions and informing us the best way to enjoy every bite. After enjoying cocktails at Peachy's Cocktail Bar (downstairs), the vibes continued at Chinese Tuxedo and we were definitely ready to try a couple of menu items. - Crispy eggplant (crispy, flavorful, a tad oily) - Spicy cucumbers (nice spice to it) - Shrimp & garlic chive crystal dumplings (not bad) - Vegetarian xo fried rice (delicious!) - Stir fried snake river beef sirloin (beef was cooked perfectly) - Espresso martini - Paradise park cocktail They're small plates so order a couple to share amongst each other. Highly suggest making reservations to both spots. I booked via Resy and was able to call to get reservations close enough between the bar and dinner. They were so accommodating. The ambiance was beautiful and service was good. They have an allergens menu which was super helpful. The prices for the portions are kind of crazy though. The bloody angle cocktail was really yummy. Love this area of China town. read more

Delicious food. We had spring rolls, mushrooms, cucumber salad, shrimp fried rice, noodles, and scallops. Every dish had a unique flavor. The main dining room was lit up with lights and decorated with greenery. Can't wait to go back! read more
