Do you ever get almost angry when you find something so good because you wish it had existed longer? That's how I felt here on Thursday. Seafood tower and martinis, followed by porterhouse and bordeaux. Caviar too cause why the hell not, which actually ended up being the best part of the meal. Dessert sunday and cookies for the table. Chef Daniel walking around saying hi to everyone. And the place itself, stunning. They mastered balancing grandeur and intimacy: huge open space somehow also feels cozy. Calling it a "steakhouse" doesn't do it justice cause it's just so far above every other one I've ever been to. While I wish it had been around sooner, the consolation is that I'm pretty sure it will be around for a long time. read more

It cannot simply be dismissed as an off-night when nearly every dish that reached the table managed to disappoint. Let's begin at the end and work backward. In more than forty years of eating key lime pie, I have never encountered one quite this bad. It was a bland, tough, chewy, gelatinous oddity that would struggle to compete with a neglected slice rotating beneath the fluorescent lights of some long-past-its-prime New York diner, much less a quality Steve's Authentic key lime pie slice. The crème caramel -- enthusiastically described by the waiter as their interpretation of crème brûlée, though in reality much closer to an uninspired flan was little better. The apricots were a welcome idea in theory, but the dessert itself was about as far from decadent as one could imagine. Worse still was the presentation: floating sadly in a translucent liquid with the consistency and visual appeal of canned peach syrup. The steaks, ostensibly the crown jewels of the menu, arrived so aggressively salted, burnt, and over-seasoned, that whatever quality the well-marbled meat possessed was almost entirely obliterated. The creamed spinach was overcooked into submission, the broccolini assaulted by a badly balanced spice profile, and the burrata was unimaginative and perfunctory. Only two items met expectations: the Royal Ossetra caviar and the Kusshi oysters -- which is less a compliment to the kitchen than a testament to the fact that neither requires much intervention. One could have nearly identical versions at dozens of restaurants across the city. What makes the experience particularly frustrating is that the restaurant itself is beautiful. The interior is among the best in New York City: elegant, atmospheric, and refreshingly free of the influencer circus of dish-by-dish photo cataloguing and video selfies. The ambiance suggests a restaurant operating at the height of sophistication. Unfortunately, the food seems entirely unaware of this aspiration. read more

Moody, warm lighting with a large dining room that still feels cozy, We ordered the small seafood tower, sweetbreads, scallop pasta, and crabs cake. The shrimp cocktail were incredible. Textually perfect large, meaty shrimp with a sprinkle of flakey salt and remoulade... memorable. Love the crab cake that was layered between two thin, crunchy buttered medallions. The scallop pasta was delicious with nice, firm handmade linguine. We love the prime rib and Sasso chicken. The waygu prime rib was huge, flavorful, and a little too fatty. It was still incredible and the saucier is working overtime. You must finish with the berry cassis and vanilla soft serve.... It is unreal and not to be missed! read more

Every year for my boyfriend's birthday, I take him to a steakhouse, and this year I chose La Tete d'Or. I was a little nervous about this place since it's not an institution like some other steakhouses in the city. However, I was very impressed with every aspect of our meal! The inside of the restaurant was spacious and beautifully decorated, and the dim lighting created a nice ambiance. We got the prime rib, steak frites, and gruyere potato gratin to share. I was afraid that it wouldn't be enough food without a starter, but we were honestly so stuffed that we ended up taking everything to go at the end. I'm not a big steak person, but the prime rib was delicious! My main focus was the sides though, which is why I was glad that the prime rib came with creamy spinach, mashed potatoes, and the popover. All of the sides were amazing, but the potato gratin was the star! This is a must-get. We also got the chocolate cake at the end, and I was so happy to see that it came with a candle! The ambiance is great. It is a nice dining room with well-spaced tables. We cam for the prix-fixe lunch. I have had very mixed experience with Boulud restaurants. I also had a great experience at Boulud Sud, which is now closed. However, the more classical French restaurants continue to disappoint. I previously had a salade Lyonnaise at Bar Boulud. It was not very good - no lardons. I am not sure what it was that was substituted. Not close in quality that is routinely available in France. Similarly, the madeleines were horrible. However, for the most part, the food is fairly good. The prix-fixe lunch is fairly priced. The chicken paillard was very well prepared. The meat cart was not available and the steak was not all that tender. In short, this Boulud restaurant is a pleasant place for a meal, but the food is only fair. read more

I had a fantastic lunch with my wife at La Tête d'Or, Chef Daniel Boulud's newest spot overlooking Madison Square Park. The space is absolutely gorgeous: vertical lighting fixtures hanging from soaring ceilings inspired by the Art Deco style of the building's original architecture, deep blue banquettes, warm woods and copper hues, and a stunning decorative art hood with a sculptural effect above the open kitchen (a real showpiece). The effect is just breathtaking without feeling formal. The $55 prix fixe 2-course lunch is a great value for the quality. However, I would certainly recommend also a cocktail or 2 to go along a plate of oysters. We ordered the West Coast Kusshi oysters: small but unbelievably plump and sweet, with that clean, briny snap Kusshis are known for. Our cocktails were excellent: * Minuit Manhattan -- rich and layered, with the Macallan and Barolo Chinato giving it this deep, wintery warmth. * Gold Digger -- bright, floral, and bubbly, the kind of cocktail that instantly puts you in a good mood. For starters, my Lobster Bisque was outstanding -- silky-smooth and flavorful; the potato, celery, and tarragon gave it an earthy, aromatic backbone instead of relying on just cream. My wife's Shrimp Cocktail featured beautifully chilled, perfectly snappy large shrimp with both French and American cocktail sauces -- a subtle but fun nod to the restaurant's transatlantic identity. For mains, the Grilled Atlantic Flounder was a highlight: delicate, moist flakes under a layer of crisp buttered breadcrumbs, all brought together by a bright, buttery beurre blanc. The peppery watercress on the side cut through the richness perfectly. My wife's Faroe Islands Salmon had a moist, buttery center with a lightly crisped exterior cooked flawlessly on the wood grill. The lentil ragout, butternut, and Dijon gave it an hearty balance. For sides, we added creamy spinach (rich and velvety without feeling heavy) and spicy broccolini (nicely charred with just enough heat to wake things up), and both were excellent. Service was warm and attentive, and despite the stunning design, the overall vibe is relaxed, welcoming, and never pretentious. A wonderful new steakhouse by Daniel Boulud! We came for lunch and there is a great lunch prix fixe option, $55 for two courses + side or $75 if you want the dessert. It's actually a great deal for such a nice upscale restaurant. The rolling cart roast selection of the week this week was a Manhattan cut roast, cooked perfectly and we also tried the prime rib sandwich which is served open face with the melted cheese over it. Both were delicious, I would love to come back and try the lobster roll and a few other menu options. I almost never find myself in this neighborhood so its definitely out of the way and hard to work into the rotation for any evening events though, that's the only problem. I wish this restaurant were in midtown west so it could be a pre-theater option! read more

Incredible experience. I've been wanting to come here for a while so I'm glad I was finally able to. The one gripe I had with them is that it was difficult to get a table for 4 at 8:30 so we opted for a 9:30 table but when we got there the restaurant was only half full anddd our table wasn't ready for another 30 mins... Here's the stuff we got At the bar I got the big apple, not bad. Ingredients were super fresh Seafood tower for 2- wow excellent. They peeled the shrimp all the way down to the nubby tail part so you can enjoy the entire thing. I also finally found where they finally have all the good oysters haha these were top pick for sure. Steak tartare- light, flavorful, a beautiful fine dice but not too fine, you can still enjoy the texture of the filet Tuna tartare- I loved how it was salted and flavorful without being wet. You could enjoy the texture of the fish, it was incredible. Caesar salad- made table side, the freshest most homemade Caesar I've ever had. Anchovies on the side and it gave a perfect pop of salt Cote de beuf- delicious and excellent quality meat. We asked for medium rare plus but it still looked pretty rare if you asked me. Dover sole- carved table side, was soooo good and I loved how the fish had actual body to it. You could grab some with your fork without it falling all over the place, I really appreciated that. Potato au gratin- this was a non negotiable for me. I told the table we are getting this no matter what because not many places make a good potato au gratin and I knew Daniel would be an exception and I was right!!!!! Perfectly salted, flavorful, and sinful like any potato au gratin should be. Creamy spinach- not as heavy as you'd think. The whole thing was green so it was kind of like Peter Luger style creamed spinach if you know what that's like. An excellent addition to the table. Brussel sprouts- didn't get to try but looked amazing! I got their Chianti for dinner and it was as smooth as ever. Definitely recommend with a delicious steak For dessert we got the berry and vanilla swirl Sunday and the pecan joconde. The cake was delicate and not too sweet but still satisfying. I recommend that more just because I'm inherently not an ice cream girly. Service was excellent. They had some cleaning the table, the had a tableside Caesar Salad, someone that started our cocktail and bread then our main waiter. They even remembered to bring a birthday candle for dessert which I didn't have to remind them. The food was spectacular. I thought with French it would be tiny portions but they were pretty large. I had to do the Prime Rib cart which they carve in front of you. It comes with the cream spinach, whipped potatoes and popover ($130). It was a great spread. The drinks were equally amazing. The LTD Martini was my favorite and its pretty large. Top 5 dirty martinis I ever had. This dinner was a pretty penny. Definitely more for birthdays or celebrations a promotion or something. First impressions were good. Beautiful room, great vibe. The Manhattan was the best I've ever had. I would've ordered another if anyone had asked, but nobody did. The bread came out first and was good. The crab cake and lobster bisque followed, and they weren't. Both underwhelming, the bisque especially, which surprised me at a Boulud spot. Somewhere in there, my girlfriend noticed her appetizer silverware was dirty, so we asked for a clean set. I came in wanting the Stonefall Wagyu, but they were out, so I went with my old reliable: the bone-in rib chop. When I asked where it was sourced, the answer was Allen Brothers. That was a letdown. Every wagyu on their menu comes from a specific farm, and the kitchen knows exactly where each one is from. They clearly know how to source properly. They just didn't bother for the bone-in. Allen Brothers is a meat purveyor, not a farm. You'd expect a kitchen carrying Boulud's name to know where its signature cuts come from. Hard to defend. When the steak came out, it was a little undercooked. The server said it was dry-aged 45 days, but the flavor said otherwise. No funk, not much depth. Some of the fat didn't render either. Honestly, that tracks with my experience of Allen Brothers cuts in general. A lot of restaurants source from them, and the bone-in ribs tend to come up short on real beefy flavor. Still a good steak. Just not a great one, and not what you expect at this price from this chef. The sides didn't help. Pomme purée and ravioli, both bland. Service started fine and got worse. My water ran out and stayed out long enough that I gave up and started drinking my girlfriend's. Toward the end, the kitchen comped the sides and sent over a chocolate cake, which I assume was for the dirty silverware. I appreciated the effort to make up for the experience. The cake itself was just okay. The ice cream sundae, though, was excellent. Best thing on the table after the Manhattan. For the price and the name on the door, I expected more. The restaurant is ranked 34th on the world's best steakhouses list. Based on this meal, I don't see it. read more

We had a nice evening here and wanted to share a few highlights. When we arrived, we waited in the bar area, which was really comfortable and had a great atmosphere. Mayra took care of us while we were there, she was friendly and made us feel welcome right away. Once we were seated, we had a great table, and things continued on a good note. Heather, the sommelier, came by and was lovely, very knowledgeable and easy to talk to. Her wine suggestions really added to the meal. The food was definitely a strong point. We started with the black truffle pasta, which was rich and full of flavor, definitely a standout. The rib eye was cooked just right, and the sides (asparagus with sabayon and creamed spinach) were both really tasty. The only part that felt a little off was our main server. He didn't introduce himself or really interact with us beyond taking the order. Nothing major, but in a place with such warm and welcoming staff, it stood out a bit. La Tête d'Or first landed on my radar via social media - it was being touted as a trendy new steakhouse, and since it was one of Daniel Boulud's restaurants I made it my intention to check it out. My friend and I were looking to catch up, so I thought it was a great opportunity to try this place out - so off we went. It was easy enough to book a table via Resy, so the only spots available most days were 5pm or 10pm or later - I opted for the latter as it was a Friday night and we didn't mind eating later. The restaurant is gorgeous - the dining room is large with high ceilings and super stylish decor throughout the space. The contemporary music softly playing paired well with the aesthetic; it kept it upscale while also being approachable - though I also feel this is a sceney restaurant. At its heart, La Tête d'Or is a steakhouse - and the menu really gave that. There's a good selection of apps, sides, and cuts of beef. We decided to start with the crab cake; this was really good - it was paired with a light salad and the cake itself had good flavor. The top was slightly crispy and the sauces that it came with complemented the crab well. For our main, we each decided to get the prime rib; for $130, this came with a generous cut of rib that was paired with two sauces and sprinkled with horseradish. Additionally, we also got sides of creamed spinach and mashed potatoes - as well as a huge popover paired with an herb butter. This was excellent - the cut of prime rib was huge, cooked perfectly, and had great flavor; the sauces complemented the beef really well. It was a whole show too as it was sliced and accented tableside.The sides were also great - the spinach and potatoes were as good as I've had at any great steakhouse, as was the popover. The ravioli were really special; these were minis that were set in cheese and served in a small cast-iron pan - really delicious. We opted for dessert, and decided to get one of their sundaes. Specifically, we got the berry-vanilla swirl with chocolate sauce. This was great; it was soft-serve ice cream and in addition to the sauce came with several different toppings for us to apply ourselves - a super fun touch. Service was fine, though in my opinion the weakest point in our experience. We were not seated until about 25 minutes past our reservation, and overall I felt that everything could have been more seamless; a good example of this was that we were left waiting a little long after receiving the dessert menu for our order to be placed. Overall though, I had a great time at La Tête d'Or - the food was excellent, the aesthetics were gorgeous, and overall this was one of the better dining experiences I've had in a while. The moment you walk in, you're struck by the decor - the ambiance is upscale and inviting, with a stunning bar and dining room. Everything I've eaten here is sublime. The meat is cooked perfectly at every temperature. Even medium well (a tricky temperature to get right!) comes out juicy and tender. Every dish has such nuance and depth of flavor. The desserts are no exception, and have just the right amount of sweetness. Some of my favorites: - LTD Caesar - Frisée Rillons - Steak Frites - Any cut of steak - Chocolat Amer Cakes - Seasonal tarts (the Banoffee one was to die for) Service is outstanding - high-end and attentive, but never stuffy. The staff are genuinely friendly and engaging, and I've even seen Daniel himself walking around, checking in on guests. I love coming back here both when I want to splurge on a weeknight meal or for a special occasion. When I have come in for special occasions, they have gone out of their way to make the evening extra special. read more

My coworker sent me a message saying that she had enjoyed a meal at La Tête d'Or by Daniel and that it would be a perfect place to meet for an elaborate lunch one day. I immediately agreed, having loved every Daniel Boulud restaurant that I had ever been to. She put time on my calendar for that "Fancy Lunch", and we both counted down the days until we could partake in the elaborate meal. As the afternoon approached, I realized that our scheduled meal was during Restaurant Week and that La Tête d'Or was participating by offering a $60 two-course lunch. The special menu had delicious options for each course, so we figured we might as well splurge and planned to go that route. When I arrived onsite, I entered the dimly lit entranceway and strolled to the end of the room where the hosts were stationed behind a large, beautiful desk. They let me know that my colleague was waiting for me at the bar, as they pointed to the right. I turned to see where they were pointing, glancing through the space in a white curtained doorway, and seeing the bar deeper into that room. I went to collect my companion from the massive, Mad Men-esque bar with a darkly colored marble countertop. I noticed that she was fittingly indulging in a dirty martini and looked forward to selecting my own cocktail once we were seated. We were escorted to a table in the neighboring, spacious dining room that offered a variety of tables and semi-circle booths. We were immediately greeted by our stellar server and given glasses of water, while I reached for the beverage list. I wound up ordering the A Mezcal A Day cocktail, which was a mix of Rayo Seco Verdé Mezcal, tart blackberry and rosemary, as well as spiced ginger honey and lime. The bright magenta drink was served in a small Nick and Nora martini glass. It was very refreshing, offering a perfect balance of smoke, sweetness, tartness, and spice with no one essence overpowering the others. I enjoyed my cocktail while placing my order and munching on a slice of toasted sourdough bread, which had been served with a decorative plate of creamy butter. Our food began to arrive not long after that. For my first course I selected the Ravioli, which was served over a butternut squash puree, was blended with smoked mushrooms, and was topped with fresh sage and Jamon Iberico. There was also some sort of herb sauce included, so the whole thing was a decadent and heavy way to start the meal. The ravioli were tiny, but there were loads of them in the bowl; the portion was very generous for a Restaurant Week dish. For my main course, I went with the Salmon, which was very well-seasoned and perfectly cooked to my requested medium temperature. It was served over a hearty lentil ragout with carrots and Dijon mustard. Though I was extremely full, I figured I would take advantage of being at the restaurant with the deal of adding on the dessert course for only an extra $10. There were a few selections available for that round, but I went with the Chocolat Amer. Now I never shy away from a chocolate dessert, and the richer, the better, but that cake was heavy even by my standards. It consisted of layers of devil's food cake and whipped ganache, which was then drizzled with a 15-year Armanac and Chocolate Sauce. It was a delicious dessert, but was just a lot after such an already substantial meal. (I suppose I could always return for drinks and cake only, ha!) From the refined service to the stunning cuisine, La Tête d'Or by Daniel delivered as incredible of an experience as I had come to expect from his fine dining establishments. Plus, if they could deliver such a flawless meal during Restaurant Week, I can only imagine how great their food would be during a less touristy time. read more

Tried the new lunch offering here and had a lovely fair. I had the 3-course prix fixe (75; 2-course for 55 also avail) and my husband had the Trolley Cut of the Week (75 for 3-course). I always like to try a new place for lunch to get a feel for the heart of the restaurant and I must say it is enchanting. We both got steaks - mine in the form of prime rib sandwich and his in the form of Trolley ribeye steak. My sandwich was open faced with melted raclette cheese gratinée and horseradish slaw - yes, it tasted as delicious as that sounds. Service was warm and gracious, with special appearance from the chef who stopped by and charmed us in the most delightful way - a perfect ending to our perfect lunch. PS - music seems to be soft pop from the 80s (w some 70s thrown in) which I thought was fun and nostalgic (since I'm old enough to recognize the tunes :) read more

What an amazing experience for our family! The food and service were exceptional. Our hostess was a bit rude when we asked to be put into a booth (we were their first customers at 5pm) but the server was so kind and attentive. We are a normal family splurging on a NYC experience. My friend wanted to take me here for a belated birthday dinner, so glad I was able to snag a reservation. The food was so delicious and beautifully presented, the atmosphere was so classy, and the service was flawless from start to finish. Christina was our server and she was amazing. For appetizers, we had the crab cake and caesar salad. For my entree, I had the prime rib that came with creamy spinach, pommes purée, and peppered popover. The prime rib was tender and juicy. A must have. My friend ordered the yellowfin tuna steak and also enjoyed it. We also got a side of creamy corn. I got the pecan joconde and this was to die for, highly recommend getting this dessert. Everything was perfect. This place provides an ultimate dining experience, definitely worth visiting. read more
