I would give the place 3.5 stars rather than a 3 and I don't think it deserves a 4 so 3 stars it is. This is a nice place to go out with friends. But your friends better have money in order to eat here lol the prices are pricey. We ordered 8 things for the total to come out about $225. One was a wine, 3 appetizers, and four entrees. The black pepper beef was way too salty. The miso cod that's not pictured was the best thing we ordered, 10/10. The Peking duck was not bad but not worth $60. The sashimi was good but they had no meat to it. The shrimp dumplings was better than the mushroom potstickers. The Korean beef rice was good but it could be $5 cheaper. Not sure why it's less than the lobster rice. Probably because the lobster rice looks like there's barely any lobster in it. Everything I've previously experienced at Buddakan is forgotten. We went here Tuesday as a pre birthday dinner for my bf and I was blown away. We had edamame dumplings, lobster egg rolls, sea bass, back pepper beef, and wasabi mashed potatoes. Everything was seasoned to perfection. The dumplings were stuffed full of edamame and practically melted in your mouth. The broth they came in was equally outstanding. The lobster egg rolls were perfectly fried and adequately seasoned. My boyfriend remarked "when I get an egg roll this is how I want it to taste." The wasabi mashed potatoes had the perfect kick to them. My black pepper beef was perfect with the potatoes. I tasted a tad bit of the sea bass and it was beautifully prepared. My only complaint is that I indicated on the open table reservations that this was a birthday that I wanted finished with the Dim Sum donuts. We got delivery from Buddakan last night and I gotta say...it was really good!! We ordered 2 x veggie fried rice, eggplant and garlic sauce, and veggie lo mein. These were all super tasty and not heavy at all. Usually expect to feel like I swallowed a brick after eating some restaurant Asian food, but everything was super light and not oily at all. We also got the edamame dumplings - the dumplings were fine/good but are 1000% outshined by the edamame dumplings at Double Knot, also in Philly. We also got a few desserts (creme brûlée and chocolate mousse) and both were really good. They had melted by the time they arrived because Buddakan put them in the same takeout bag as our piping hot food (??) -- deducted 1 star for not thinking through those logistics. Star short to be honest! Starting with the best, the duck wing appetizer was unique. The meat of the duck wing was unlike any other meat I've had in a while. It basically fell off the bone, was stringy in a way that was absolutely tender, and melty but not fatty. It had a nice salty gochujang sauce that really tasted more like hoisin sauce to me. Definitely a finger licking dish that was plated nicely as well. The Pan Seared Sea Bass was a large center cut portion and very very tasty. I felt it had a miso like flavor which wasn't noted on the menu. It was perfectly seared and prepared over a bed of Haricots verts, and a butternut squash puree. Maitake mushrooms and a jus topped a beautiful plate. The doughnuts dessert with a trio of sauces; apple jam, chocolate sauce and ginger cream cheese was delicious. The ginger cream cheese was super light and quite frankly if I wasn't told there was a ginger component, I honestly would have missed it. The donuts weren't crispy and had a thin layer of confectioners sugar all around. It was plated a cute fashion tucked inside old school Chinese take out containers turned on its side on a rectangular plate. The sweet & crispy jumbo shrimp topped with a citrus-radish salad accompanied by candied walnuts was incredibly disappointing. So the name of the dish denotes sweet and crispy, neither of which is accurate. It was sour and limp. The citrus salad was too limey and the fact that this was layered on top of something crispy, well it made whatever was underneath no longer crispy for sure. Perhaps is this is the design, the shrimp needed to be crunchier, to hold it's own against a strong citrus salad layered on top. Finally, while the shrimp was indeed large, I'm not sure it was jumbo. As the only plus, the candied walnuts on the side were great. The Dan Dan noodles were also similarly disappointing. I couldn't say I've had a bad Dan Dan noodle until this meal. I realize that there are Dan Dan noodles without a strong meaty flavor for let's say vegetarians, I just wasn't expecting that to be the case here. The sauce, aside from being overly salty, lacked any flavor other than the sesame paste. Where was the pork? Where was the spicy? Two very distinguishing characteristics of Dan Dan noodles. The bland chick peas on the side didn't add any profile to the dish. I kept wondering why they were even there. I don't get all the accolades for the tuna pizza. There was a thin layer of tuna carpaccio with a hard to find spicy aioli or pickled jalapenos topped with scallions and micros. Contrary to the components of the dish, it wasn't spicy at all. Perhaps a sprinkle of finely cracked pepper would help? It was an ok dish that I wasn't expecting many to fawn over. It was however, a visually nicely plated dish. The service was really impeccable. All my needs and questions were answered quickly. Plate and silverware changes as well as the courses were served quickly. I do believe I got the worse seat in the house but hey, there is always going to be a worse seat in the house and someone has to get it. First time at Buddakan on a Sunday night. Showed up about ten minutes early for our reservation and were seated within minutes. The service was really impressive and our server was very personable and attentive without being overbearing. I found the food excellent too. Much better than some highly rated Asian fusion restaurants in Philadelphia. Would give it 5 stars based on food and service alone. Our drinks were really nice, but light. And overall I did not enjoy the ambiance and esthetic of the restaurant. Gives off hotel hall vibes to me and it was very, very loud (despite it not being full with people). This was my second time dining with Buddakan for restaurant week (first time was back in October). I didn't get to write a review the first time, but both experiences were very similar. The service is always phenomenal. Servers are always friendly, attentive, and very helpful with any questions that you may have about the menu. The food came out within a reasonable time. Appetizers I did enjoy were the tuna pizza and the bbq duck wings. There is a hint of a kick to the duck wings because of the gochujang. I personally found them to be not spicy, but just giving a heads up for anyone with a low spice tolerance. I tried the pan seared sea bass back in October and it literally melted in my mouth. Very delicious and I do recommend it. This time around, I tried the jumbo shrimp and I didn't find them to be that special. I had a bite of the barbecue pork tenderloin and it was quite juicy. Didn't get to try what accompanied it though. Seriously can not go wrong with dessert here. The Yuzu meringue tart was recommended by the server and it did not disappoint. My husband made reservations here for my birthday on the recommendation of several friends and I am glad they did because I really enjoyed my experience. The waiter recommended the duck fried rice which was good. I wasn't blown away but I enjoyed it. My arteries hate me but I am a fan of pork so I tried the smoked spare ribs...these I really liked and would definitely have again. My friends kept raving about the "dip sum doughnuts" and they really didn't disappoint (I appreciated the sparklers placed on them for my birthday). The fruit jam and gingered cream cheese were lovely. We also had their boozy bubble tea...not very strong but tasty. Probably wouldn't order again because seemed overpriced. It's such a cute neighborhood but for some reason lacking a reason to frequent. Buddakan is consistent and yummy. I came with my partner during covid, so we sat outside missing the chic ambiance of the interior. I'm pescatarian. I always start with the Asian Cashew Salad and Edamame Dumplings. Went here yesterday for my birthday. My wife got this email about how Stephen Starr's restaurants here in Philadelphia have built these outside enclosures and filling them with heat lamps. I really enjoy most of his places but wanted to try a new one. So she read me some menu items and the one that stuck out most to me was Buddakan. Funny thing is the best sounding thing on the menu wasn't even what I got. So we got the shrimp buns, Korean beef rice, dim sum sampler, sea bass and the wasabi mash potatoes. Everything was excellent. The single best item was the shrimp buns or the edamame pot stickers in the dim sum sampler. I could've eaten entire meals out of either of those. We shared everything and still had left overs. The heated enclosure wasn't bad. Of course we still had our coats on so it wasn't like we were really warm but it was comfortable enough to enjoy our meal. If you enjoy stripping down it won't be the dinning experience for you. I'm normally fairly cold. They have a heat duct running through the structure, a heat lamp outside of it and they gave my wife an extra small heater. It was 36 degrees. I love this place, it is tastefully decorated with a giant sculpture of Buddha. The bar selection is inclusive and one can easily spend an hour before getting seated at their table. For the food we have ordered the soup dumplings, shrimp bao buns, beef satay and the spring rolls. The dumplings are better than those served at Sampan and I Love Sampan, so that says a lot. In the main course we usually just get the kimchi fried rice with the wagyu beef and it is as delicious as it is fulfilling for 2 people. My favorite dish overall was probably the sea bass - smooth, buttery, and a great glaze although it was served with a poor assortment of veggies. The shrimp buns were good too and the doughnuts were a hearty way to end the meal. The meal came out to about $50 after tax and tip, which is pretty great value relative to what their normal prices are. We decided to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday here this evening and found the food incredibly disappointing. Everything that we ordered was painfully bland, with the exception of the lo mein which was overly salty. We tried the dim sum sampler, pork belly buns, lobster rolls, wok chicken, and lo mein and would not recommend any of it. While the ambience is romantic and fun, the food was severely lacking in taste and quality. There was also a long wait time for our food, and the restaurant seemed to overbook guests, which resulted in a lot of congestion and crowded seating arrangement. Given that it was restaurant week aka fixed price, if you opt for the "fancier dish" with more expensive ingredients, then naturally the portion size would be much smaller. That being said, the food was quite good. The restaurant was very busy, as expected on a Saturday lunch during restaurant week. The Chilean sea bass and veggie was very tasty. Beef entree not so much. It all just seemed each course sat a bit before coming to the table. When it did, it didn't seem like it came right out of the pan to plate. Bartender was gracious to add an extra 1/2 shot to my drink when telling him it seemed a bit short. Staff attentive filling glasses and removing plates. A bit dark to really see the food, but some would say romantic. Me, I like a nice view of what UK about to eat....and see my date clearly. While in Philly for a work trip, a coworker recommended Buddakan for our dinner, and it lived up to that recommendation and then some. We were lucky that we came early enough to get a seat without a reservation, but I would highly recommend one, especially on a Friday or Saturday. The only thing I take issue with is when I initially came in. The person I was with forgot their mask in the car. I was already seated inside so when he got to the door he asked if could be supplied with a disposable mask. He was told no. I then walked over inquiring why he wouldn't be supplied with one. We each got appetizers one of them or the dumplings and the other was the shrimp I think it was rock shrimp never heard of it but the appetizers were so so good we got the pad Thai and the pan seared Seabass. I'm not sure if she picked the menu but if you ever do a prefix menu contact the restaurant for more info. It's such a great deal, especially for a large group! The downside of having a birthday here is.. you have to pay for the slice of cake that YOU ordered outside of Buddakan. Yes, you bought the cake and now you want to eat it at the restaurant so first you have to pay per slice per guest for the cake. Ugh, doesn't make sense to me. Very versatile Asian fusion menu and an aesthetically beautiful restaurant. Highly recommend the lobster fried rice and black pepper beef, with a side of the wasabi mashed potatoes. Try the dim sum donuts for dessert. One downside is the service tends to move you along quickly so they can flip the table to other patrons. read more

Ok so I feel like I'm required to be quick and hasty with my writing of this review because at the time of patronization my brain was literally swimming in vodka soda so memories are fleeting. I have been salivating to sample Buddakan for quite some time now but the time never felt right. After previous activities on the day in question, I decided to throw caution to the wind, bite the bullet, and finally pay this place a visit. It didn't hurt that it was disturbingly early for 2 hot twenty-somethings to eat dinner on a Saturday evening which would help in the getting-a-table department. As is pretty standard, my suspicions were correct. We were seated immediately. Secondary to my relatively new attempted ketotic state, many new foods and beverages that were previously off limits are now fair game. One such item is mother-fucking BUBBLE TEA. Holy shit. Throw back to my carefree college days and adolescent metabolism. Much to my pleasure, this place has a bubble tea COCKTAIL. Possibly because I was blasted already but this was literally absolutely fucking spectacular. It was thick with little floaty things that just felt in my soul belonged there. The tapioca or whatever balls were chewy and enhanced my nostalgia. Contrary to literally every single thing I just said about ketosis, for the actual food portion of our meal, we ordered exclusively carbohydrates: edamame dumplings, wasabi mashed potatoes, curried cauliflower, and vegetable rice. Both the curried cauliflower and wasabi mashed potatoes were amazing. Cauliflower slathered in some creamy curry sauce with cashews and I assume (don't actually remember) some other stuff like maybe some peas or other little things. I do vaguely recall seeing some red stuff. Wasabi mashed potatoes were like light and fluffy whipped taters with a delicate wasabi zest. Vegetable rice came with a cream lake for some reason, not sure what that was about but I don't remember being particularly impressed with this one but of course shoveled it down my kisser nonetheless. The real stars of the show were the edamame dumplings. Describing them as better than sex doesn't do them justice. The texture inside the dumpling is like not something I was aware was present in nature, smooth and rich. They tasted absolutely orgasmic. Don't come here without ordering this shit, trust me. Anyways by the time we finished we resembled something the cat dragged in. I, miraculously and for perhaps one of the few times in my life, managed to maintain possession of the leftovers for the entirety of our trip home and successfully implant them onto one of my fridge shelves. Beautiful restaurant it has a very beautiful decor. The service was amazing probably the best waiter's I've had ever. Food was delicious and cooked to perfection I recommend the pork Bao Buns they are to die for also the sea bass and dessert was delicious 10/10 must recommend read more
