In response to the owner: Creating a $19 menu that is only available to Chinese-speaking people is inappropriate and discriminatory. Businesses should not limit promotions based on language or cultural backgrounds. People from different cultures are able to enjoy other cuisines. The Chinese-speaking menu has way better options and quality than the English one, which is very disappointing. I advise everyone to not dine here. This was my biggest concern with this restaurant. There was a menu on the back of the happy hour card that was written only in Chinese. I asked the waitress about it and questioned why there wasn't an English version available. Her first response was that it was "for the Chinese elders", which is not listed anywhere on the menu by the way. After returning to the table, she added that many people "don't eat pork or like spicy food." I explained that spicy food and pork are enjoyed across many cultures, including African cuisines, so that reasoning didn't make sense to me. Her final explanation was that they simply hadn't printed an English version yet. The interaction felt dismissive and inconsistent, which left a bad impression. Beyond that, the overall service was poor. The atmosphere did not feel welcoming, there were no check-ins during the meal, and food was dropped off without any follow-up or engagement from the staff. If you do not speak Chinese, you are able to use Chatgpt for translation. Philly is a diverse city and does not need any business that is unable to cater to all customers fairly. This review is for Happy Hour only. Overall, I had a great first visit with a friend. We came for our first time on a Tuesday, arrived around 3:30pm and plenty of seating at the time. Take a look at the photos - their lighting is perfect for food photos, one of the best spots if you care about food photos IMO. We got 1 of everything except the wontons and green beans. I didn't love the smokey ol' fashioned and I wouldn't order it again. There was nothing smokey about it, and was a bit sweet. I enjoyed everything we got for happy hour food wise. The tofu had a nice aroma of black truffle, and breading was light. Nothing to dislike about the chicken and mushroom soup dumplings, and I was just stoked to have soup dumplings from a gal that doesn't eat pork! I honestly didn't think I would think anything of the general taos as it's not generally a dish I ever order. However, I really enjoyed the tartness of the blueberry and it worked well in this dish. The kimchi fried rice was decent, but it lacked kimchi flavor. Seafood fried udon was solid, I wish there was a bit more noodles for the portion - but the portion of seafood was definitely fair. I believe happy hour is from 3-6 so we wanted to make the most out of our time. The dim lighting set the ambiance when you walk in. Since there was so many things to try we decided to get one of each food item (minus the wontons in chili oil and green beans with pork). The items we tried: Lychee martini - pretty strong but a little too sweet for my liking. Smokey Ol Fashioned - My friend liked her drink but also mentioned it was on the sweet side. Chicken and mushroom soup dumplings - little dumpling perfection! soup base was excellent with perfect amount of meat inside Crispy Fried Tofu with black truffle - Perfectly battered and fried. The tofu inside was a good soft texture. That pop of black truffle dusting is what made the dish very good. Blueberry General Tao's Chicken - great batter, not overly sweet. Has a hint of mustard and tart flavors. Fun pop of blueberries on the plate. Kimchi + cheese fried rice - cheesy rice goodness. Came also with shrimp in the rice. Wished there was more of kick from the Kimchi but pretty good. Seafood Fried Udon Noodle - Came with a decent amount of veggies and shrimp. I saw some small scallops in there. We visited JiangNan on a whim after a busy day in Philly for the World Cup. The host, Kevin, was so hospitable and took extra care of us while we waited briefly for our table. I've been to the Montclair, Fort Lee, and Jersey City locations and enjoyed them all. Unfortunately, rather disappointed in the Philly location. Was going to Philly with a party of 7 so I tried to make a reservation. They don't do online reservations (rather inconvenient) so the morning of when they opened at 11:30am I called repeatedly - but no one answered. I then decided to have Visa Infinite Concierge do it - but they also couldn't get someone to pickup around 1pm. When we got into Philly around 4pm, I poked by head into the restaurant to see if we could get a reservation. "Of course, but why didn't you just call us?" Was the rather snarky reply. Ran our errands, then we sat down for dinner a while later. Ordered their signature peking duck, chicken lettuce wraps, and the stir fried cabbage - all dishes I've eaten repeatedly at their other locations. The food was decent but seemed generally less tasty than their other locations. Particularly I noticed all the ingredients in the chicken lettuce wraps were cut 2x size of the other locations. I previously loved the Jiang Nan green tea - to the point where I had asked them which brand so I could order it for my house. Not sure if they switched brands since then or maybe the water temp was off? but this tea was totally just average. But I was REALLY disappointed in the service during the entire meal. There was only like 3-4 other tables while we were dining so it wasn't busy. The two servers seemed mostly preoccupied with chatting with 2 girls sitting at their own table in the corner. Repeatedly had to ask for refills, extra sauce, and napkins, the servers would just seem to forget until you asked again. Everything was also excruciatingly slow - tea came out cold, the wrappers for the peking duck were cold - it definitely seemed like things were sitting in the kitchen for a while before they came out. I came across this establishment while searching for Dim sum in China town. It was happy hour from 3PM-6PM, and I decided to check it out from how sexy and dark it looked from the outside. Upon entering, the restaurant was completely empty, and my friend and I were greeted by an employee sitting at the bar. He told me we could sit anywhere and brought me menus and water. I started with a pink passion alcoholic beverage and the wonton and chili oil sauce. The wontons were so delicious and flavorful. The pink passion was very tasty, and it was my favorite drink off the happy hour menu. I then tried the lychee martini with the seafood fried udon noodles. The noodles were cooked al dente. The seafood was great. I really loved everything about it. The lychee martini wasn't really that great to me. I don't really care for the strong lychee flavor but that is what the base of the martini is so to each their own. I tried the Blueberry General Tso's Chicken⁠. I did not care for them at all. They lacked flavor. It was like the chicken was just fried with no seasoning at all. They were crispy, and fresh but I'm assuming they relied on blueberry sauce to take over the flavor which it did not. I tried the Kimchi & Cheese Fried Rice⁠ which was tasty and different. I had never tried kimchi in fried rice, and it added a little spice and crunch to the rice. I would definitely have it again. I tried the pork soup dumplings which were not fully cooked. The atmosphere is stylish and relaxing, definitely a place that knows how to bring the upscale vibes. We went during happy hour hoping to cool off and enjoy a few bites, but the experience was a bit mixed. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty when we arrived, we were seated directly next to the only other couple in the space, which felt unnecessarily cramped and awkward. Later, another couple came in and they were placed right next to us too, even though the entire restaurant was open. It really killed the mood -- especially since it was so quiet that we could hear every awkward conversation and even someone chewing loudly right next to us. It just didn't make sense not to spread people out more in such a nice, spacious dining room. As for the food, we mostly ordered from the happy hour menu: the mala wontons, seafood udon, and soup dumplings, plus one dish from the regular menu -- the stir-fried loofah. The mala wontons were nicely sauced with a good amount of heat and flavor, definitely one of the better bites of the meal. The soup dumplings were unfortunately a big miss -- all of them had already broken open before arriving, so the broth had leaked out, making them dry and disappointing. The seafood udon was fine -- not bad, just unremarkable. The loofah dish, though, was excellent. Light, flavorful, and beautifully cooked -- it had a comforting, nostalgic taste and really stood out. It also happened to be the only item we ordered off the regular menu, which makes me think the non-happy hour offerings might be stronger overall. One of the couples near us was clearly frustrated -- they had finished their meal and still hadn't received their appetizers, which just added to the strange tension of being seated so close together. On the plus side, the restaurant and bathroom were clean, but the bathroom was out of hand soap, which was a bit concerning for a place trying to offer a refined dining experience. Overall, JiangNan nails the aesthetic and has potential in its main menu, but the awkward seating choices and underwhelming happy hour food really took away from the experience. Five stars for the ambiance. Although the walls are black but there are small lights focusing on each table so you can take nice food pictures and doesn't feel dark once you are sitting down. There are two gigantic Chinese vases so you can feel the oriental atmosphere of the restaurant. Menu is printed in a hard paper with some pictures to help you visualize the dish. I am not a big fan of spicy food so I could eat only some. But if you like heat, you might like it. Beautiful presentation served with a tong for easier serving. Half Duck: sliced duck is beautifully layered and presented in a big tray with the hoisin sauce, thin wrapper (similar to crepes) sugar, chunks of pineapple, thinly sliced cucumber and scallions. Was really excited to give this place a try considering the fact that I've been looking to find new places in the city and I absolutely love authentic Asian cuisines. I called about 10 minutes ahead and asked if they accepted walk ins and they did which was perfect and it wasn't far from our location. Great experience at JiangNan. This is a restaurant originating from New York and I am impressed that they are able to bring high quality food to the Philadelphia area as well. We started with the Braised Pork Belly in Black Tea Sauce. The sauce was similar viscosity as a gravy and coated the plump pork belly well. The pork belly itself was soft and melty. Next, we got the Corn with Salty Egg Yolk. It came from their special seasonal menu and I have to say, it was quite a unique dish. The corn was battered, deep fried, and coated in salty egg yolk. The corn itself is sweet and the batter was not clumpy. The individual corn kernels were separate from one another. The batter remained light and crunchy until the last bite. Great execution! The Tomato & Beef Fried Rice uses the traditional comfort food dish Tomato & Beef and combined it with fried rice. The dish was a great rendition to one of my all time classic favorite Chinese dishes. The beef that was used was high quality, with great inter-muscular fat and minimal use of baking soda. We ordered about 8-9 dishes to share as a party of 8 but all these different dishes can easily be summarized instead of going through each one. Let's start off with the service and how the food was served. The service was lackluster. The vegetables we ordered came out in the middle of two appetizers being served. The soup came out closer to the end of our entrees. We had to ask for spoons and self serve the soup. I know "omg have to self serve the soup" but it is common in Chinese restaurants especially higher end ones for the staff to serve the soup in the bowls when it comes out and then we self serve if we want more from the bowl. It took us 3-4 times of asking to get enough bowls of rice for the whole table. Lastly we ordered 3 cocktails. The last thing to be served were the cocktails which we had to remind them about 4-5 times before we got them. By the time they were served everyone was done with the meal. They need to improve on the order the dishes are served. Now the food. They were just ok and some subpar. The dishes were mainly too heavily seasoned so it's a bit too salty or under-seasoned. For example the frog legs had very little flavor to them. So what food was good? The duck, the lotus appetizer (cold dish, sweet), and braised pork belly. Everything else was meh especially the soup dumplings. Not worth. Also the cocktails were great even though they came at the end. Overall for the price and the required gratuity due to party size. It's a little pricier but the quality, ambiance, and service give you that pricier feel. Super minor flaws with some dishes but overall delicious. Amazing food and service! Great showmanship for the shrimp dish and the sizzling lamb platter. The ambience was dark, but fancy, and there was ample space for many diners. Definitely a more upscale place for Philly Chinatown. My favorite dishes were the eel and the peking duck. I also liked the crispy tofu and the lotus root and sticky rice. Every dish was delicious! Everything is clean and spotless, disposable chopstick tips, wet napkins, and gloves are provided during your stay. The restaurant is dimly lit giving a romantic/fancy vibe to it. Here are the dishes we ordered: Peking duck with the duck bone soup Ox Tripe in Sichuan oil Deep fried shredded eel wonton in chili oil mega lamb skewers carrot with egg custard Crab Pork Soup Dumpling if you are to order anything go for the peking duck!! this is the best peking duck place i had in philly. it is a fun way to eat your food as you have to wrap it up on your own. The carrots were also good to my surprise as i dont really like carrots. this little snack has a crispy outer layer and a extremely soft and chewy interior similar to mochi. Everything here is made to perfection. When you expect it to be crispy, it was and similarly with the spices. warning the ox tripe is very spicy so make sure to let your server know so they can adjust the spice. Also the soup dumplings are made fresh upon order so expect to wait a bit for it. Our server was named Ariel who was extremely kind to help us with our stay. Shes very quick and attentive. Food was brought out quick and she was also quick to help either distribute or help rearrange our table to fit everything on. A must try place if you are craving Chinese food. It is nice JiangNan opened in Philadelphia, I have heard of good things about its NYC and NJ stores and it certainly lives up to it. The store is at the edge of Chinatown. They are fusion Chinese food but pretty authentic with both spicy and non-spicy entries. Every single dish we tried, from appetizer to main entry to deserts are delicious. The price is a little high in Chinatown standard but well worth it. Service is top notch as well. read more

JiangNan is definitely one of the more modern, classy Asian fusion restaurants located in Chinatown. I went with a group of four on a Sunday afternoon, without reservations, and there was no wait. The dim-lit black interior with table lamps is the first thing I noticed inside, which honestly gives the perfect ambiance for a nice date night spot too! Food & Drinks: We ordered 4 dishes and a drink. The food here is definitely a bit pricier than what you'd normally find in Chinatown, but overall their signature dishes were worth it: 1. Steamed Pork & Crab Meat Soup Dumpings ($8.95) - it comes with four, great for sharing, the dumpling skin was nice and thin, would order again (forgot to take a pic of this). 2. Half Roast Peking Duck ($46) - this is probably one of their signature dishes, you can order either half or whole duck, and it comes with a nice tableside presentation of the usual spread of condiments (wrappers, green onion, cucumber sticks, sauce, etc). You can optionally add duck bone broth for $15. The duck wrappers were thin, almost delicate, and the duck skin wasn't as crispy as I expected, but the flavors were pretty authentic and delicious. 3. Grilled Stripe Bass in Aged Pickle Sauce ($49.99) w/Standard Set Side Dishes ($14.95) - another one of their wow factor dishes with the presentation, the fish was really tender and flavorful. 4. Sauteed Pea Sprouts ($18.95) - this was the only dish that I wouldn't order again. Flavors were good, but I don't think it was worth the price 5. Pineapple beer - forgot how much this was, but it was for the table. A great option if you like something light, and more fruity! It came in a cute barrel drink dispenser. Service: The staff was super attentive and came to our table many times to check if we needed anything. We had a lot of questions about the dishes on the menu and our waitress was very patient in explaining in detail what they were and what she recommended (we had a low spice tolerance, so we had trouble debating which flavor to get for their popular grilled striped bass dish). Location & Parking: JiangNan is located at the edge of Chinatown, right down the street from the friendship gate. Parking in Chinatown is always a hit or miss, so would recommend planning ahead! read more

The interior atmosphere was classy. High ceiling, spacious, cloth table mat, dimmed environment with table lamps. The service was also great. The service was quick, waitress was attentive, and they offered to pack the leftovers. The pickled cabbage side dish is delicious that we refilled 3 times!! We got the braised beef brisket w potato and the stir fried grass fish filet. - The braised beef brisket w potato was great but not spicy at all and I don't mind having it again in the future. - The stir fried grass fish filet has an interesting texture. The fish is crunchy. I'm glad I tried as this was new to me. I really enjoyed the experience and will check out other locations in the future read more

I was not able to confirm a reservation online but showed up around 8:20pm and was seated immediately. The decor is dark and elegant ( perfect for a date night). Ordered the potpourri rice wine ( cool presentation). I preferred the taste of the saki tini. The salt pepper jumbo shrimp are usually served with the shell but I requested for the shell to be removed.( they obliged with no issues). The kung pao chicken had some kick to it! Great food! Visited JiangNan a few weeks ago while exploring Chinatown. My first impression was how beautiful and classy the interior was, with the service being quick and helpful. We arrived about an hour before closing and were given plenty of notice for last call on food items, so we put our full order in all together. The food came out quickly, hot, and at a great staggered pace, since we did order several items. We ordered (not pictured) the truffle soup dumplings, as well as the spicy pork soup dumplings. I love wontons with chili oil, and these were phenomenal! Great spice level (for someone who enjoys spicier food) and meat & dumpling were cooked to perfection. The duck was outstanding. As someone who has little to no experience with eating Peking duck, this blew me away. The perfectly crispy skin and soft, fall apart meat was everything I could've asked for. Would definitely like to come back to JiangNan and would highly recommend the duck and wontons in chili oil! read more
