We were there on a Monday around 230. Place wasn't very busy. Our waitress had 1 table (ours) and a 9 top outside. We saw her twice in an hour while the other tables had waiters everywhere. Very cool place! Similar to a Cracker Barrel with antique store instead of the Country Store. Looks like a fun place to stop in the summer on a weekend also. I had a grilled chicken salad but asked them not to blacken the chicken, the other request was the amazing feta balsamic dressing that caught my eye on the menu instead BBQ ranch, not doubt it would have been good, but hard to pass up something with the words feta and balsamic in it! Service was fast and friendly, I was running late on a trip and they got me out of their quickly. Cool vintage TVs playing vintage TV shows was pretty cool. My salad was good, fresh, and the avocado was perfect touch. Lots of cool decor, nice side trip while traveling. I couldn't help but notice the couple beside got the fish and chips as I was leaving and it looked incredible, but I can't eat that! Huge serving, and it looked and smelled great. Today we opted to sit downstairs in the dog- friendly patio area. Last time we sat in this area (instead of the upper deck or inside) was a couple years ago. First thing in our agenda was to grab one of their wonderful margaritas. We got our water then put in our drink order with Kathryn. She then came back and took our menu order. First real surprise was in the limited menu options. We both opted for a burger (can't recall it's name) but it was $17. No chips, no fries, not even a pickle on the side. Ordered the burger medium. This area has its own menu, extremely limited selection. Nothing from outside the restaurant is served in this space. After order was placed, Kathryn came back and said, "sorry, can't bring alcohol out here." This was a real surprise given the last time we'd sat down there, we had a couple margaritas each. We asked if we could go to the bar and get them, bring them back down. Nope. And then there's nothing. No offer to get a different drink, a tea, a soda, nothing. So here we are, waiting on two way over priced burgers. Can't cancel the order. Can't move to the upper deck or restaurant. So we figure we'll just wait on our burgers. Burgers come, well done with burnt bun. For $17, I got a $3 over cooked burger patty on a burnt bun. So disappointed. I had looked forward to a wonderful summer of outings with our pups and the fine food we were accustomed to at Buddy Lou's. Not any more. Don't know when I'll visit them again, which makes me sad since we've supported them since they opened their doors. My rating is based on service (under par for what we're used to at Buddy Lou's) and food (0 stars on the meal; too expensive and not good for the cost). If you go to Buddy Lou's, avoid the downstairs area unless you really want a subpar, expensive meal. If you've got your pup, get a carry out order and eat it down by the river. You'll be way more satisfied. read more

I really wanted to love this place, as Hancock really needs a nice restaurant. Unfortunately, after 3 visits, I can't bring myself to go back. The nail in the coffin was the chicken and waffleS that I ordered my last visit. I received a single small waffle and a dried up piece of chicken...for $14. When I mention to the waitress that I was disappointed with the meal, and was surprised that chicken and waffleS only included one waffle, she said something to the effect of, "Yeah, I usually cringe when somebody orders that." Well, thanks for telling me. When I went to the counter to pay, I was asked how my meal was. I responded by echoing my disappointment for the $14 dried chicken and small waffle. I was simply asked if I wanted to fill out a survey to let the owners know that I was disappointed. Never once did the staff offer another meal, or another waffle, or to try and make things right in any way. The other meals that my wife and I got we're decent, but the portion sizes certainly didn't match the prices. Disappointing for sure. read more

2nd visit. Buddylou's is located right next to the parking lot to access both the Western MD Rail Trail and the C&O Canal. As such, it typically attracts the visitors passing through or using Hancock as the starting/end spot for the trails. The restaurant is clean with a rustic look and an antique theme to it. Staff is super nice, service is very good. Prices are reasonable, food portions very good and served hot. This visit was during the Sunday brunch menu, at the recommendation of our waitress, I went with the sausage gravy and biscuits, with an egg on top (fried over hard).... AWESOME! I have not been here during dinner or bar hours and I believe the downstairs is a trinket/antique shop... not sure. I've also not had the ice cream, which is all the more reason for me to return for a 3rd visit. read more

Adorable spot with terrific brunch! We stumbled upon this delight after searching for good brunch options near Berkeley Springs (it's only about 6 miles out). When we drove up, we knew we had hit the jackpot- the outside is colorful with a little bit of eccentricity, especially with the antique shop below the restaurant. The brunch menu (and food) is outstanding. Each of us ordered different options- all came out quick and delicious. DEFINITELY spring for the $3 Pecan Buns. SO GOOD. The inside was just as adorable as the outside- with a quirky country flair, but still very clean and uncluttered. Loved the shirt-sleeve curtains. Went to Buddy Lou's as a good stopping point between Richmond and Pittsburgh. We had a wonderful lunch. We only went there on Yelp reviews and weren't disappointed by any means. Upon walking in the host was full of smiles. The waitress worked so hard, she took care of everyone in the restaurant. Really great decor! My husband got the fish and chips which was amazing. Fresh and battered to ordered. I got the Reuben which was piled high with corn beef. The best home made pickles I have had. Overall - the food was fresh and made in house. We are driving to TN and along the way we found this gem by the Potomac River. I saw the photo of roasted mussels and knew we had to stop there. I ordered the mussels, Greek salad and "She Crab" soup. The mussels were tender and well balanced in the spicy Thai coconut sauce. The Greek salad was fresh and delicious. The main event was the soup. Luscious chunks of crab were blended into a bisque of pure heaven. My husband ordered the chicken panini which came with homemade potatoe chips and a pickle. On the recommendation of a friend, we decided to take a ride to Hancock and try Buddy Lou's for lunch. It was well worth it. We entered the building on the lower level, which is the entrance to the antique store. Plenty of old-timey things to look at. Upstairs in the restaurant, we were seated at a converted, pedal sewing machine table for two. We ordered sweet teas and the She-Crab soup. The sweet tea was perfect; it was fresh, strongly brewed, and not overly sweet. That She-Crab soup was made with Sherry and had a delicate, buttery flavor, lightly seasoned with Old Bay, and served with oyster crackers. Get it to share, because it's very rich and quite delicious. My husband enjoyed the Fish and Chips. It was a large, chunky piece of haddock, prepared with tempura batter; crispy and hot. It was served with a tasty apple jalapeño slaw - not spicy. I ordered The Rachael which is oven-roasted turkey breast topped with Swiss cheese, tangy sauerkraut and thousand Island dressing on grilled rye. I order Rachael's wherever they are offered, and this was one of the best! The turkey was sliced, but not a "turkey loaf." The sandwich was huge and served with thin-sliced, homemade potato chips. The chips had a very nice "burnt" flavor to them, which I love. If I were to make one suggestion, it would be to add a little extra Thousand Island dressing to the sandwich, but I'm sure I could've gotten more on the side if I had asked. We had to try their signature Sour Cream Coconut Cake. The cake is very dense, very moist, and has a light Almond flavor to it. I've never really had anything similar to it, but it's good, so go ahead and try it. It ended up being a $40 lunch, but we have hefty leftovers, so no complaints. Buddy Lou's is friendly, homey, uniquely decorated, and they have great food. We'll be back. read more

6 of us went after work down the road 12 minutes to Buddy Lou's in Hancock, MD. Super cute town. This place is very eclectic. It has an antique store, old fashioned candy and soda, assortments of wine, and an ice cream parlor. The most bizarre part was the "Oldies to the Max" MAX 92.9 radio station in the restaurant. Big Mike the D.J. just got done with his shift and was kind enough to talk to me and flip his ON AIR sign on. Let's get to to the food review part of this evening. Hummus, celery and Kalamata olive appetizer was divine! I ordered fish and chips with a side salad. Salad was a Spring salad. Fresh and good. Fish was a meaty portion of Haddock but the presentation was aweful. Fries were super gross! Completely soggy, limp and drenched in grease. My stomach hurts and it's been an hour. Sitting in my stomach like a boulder, not a rock. Coworker got fried oysters. The insides of her oysters were cold, not cooked. She told waitress and waitress took them back. We could hear the waitress and cook bickering back and forth. Completely tacky. Waitress did take meal off her bill which was the right thing to do. I gave it 3 stars because it was a fun and interesting experience. A must go to joint to try at least once. read more

Lovely place to stop in Hancock. The outdoor seating area is lovely and the interior is adorable. We weren't incredibly hungry so we ordered the 1/2 lb burger and chicken wing appetizer to split and it was plenty of food. If we had room we definitely would have ordered one of the amazing looking desserts. The burger was good and the fries were PERFECTLY cooked. The wings were very good and very meaty. I've eaten here twice recently and was really pleased both times: lunch on their patio and dinner inside. It's a charming place, full of antiques and memorabilia, with old wide-plank wood floors. They make their own bottled sodas in some unusual, cool flavors. The Mac and Cheese appetizer is great; the side salads are lovely and we were all happy with our entrees. It's Friday June 24th, we have a 7PM reservation , the Grandsons are a surprise addition to tonight's dinner. We are seated outside with the band on a beautiful Saturday evening. We wait .... then we wait. 15 minutes later the wait staff become aware of the somber table in the middle of the outside area twiddling their thumbs. At this point, we had the menu memorized and we are ready to order. We order drinks, appetizer and dinner at this time. We wait .... we wait ... 53 minutes later we get our drinks and 6 crab balls. I know crabs must have small balls, but seriously!! $11 for large marbles of crab??? It doesn't take long for us to devour these tiny morsels. Then we wait ... finally two salads and a Reuben sandwich arrive! We are enjoying the band and love the atmosphere! But this is all for naught, because despite all the good this place has to offer good service will always be required. We took a giant leap of faith and ordered dessert .... Did you get the pattern yet? That's right ... we wait and wait. Next comes out a peach and berry tart with a mound of ice cream! What's the white stuff around the edges you ask? No it's not whip cream, it's the ice cream slowing wasting away not from the heat ... you guessed it.... from the wait!!. We are still awaiting our coffees arrival, which eventually comes to fruition. My mom ordered one scoop of ice cream with hot fudge. Needless to say we now know how to make chocolate milk in a bowl. Conveniently located right off the Western Maryland Rail Trail, Buddy Lou's is a must-stop for its comfort food with a twist, eclectic atmosphere, and soft serve ice cream. Oh yes, SOFT SERVE. Since we were in a "linner" sort of a situation, we both opted for salads and these were unique and oh-so-filling: -Chicken BBQ Salad: this salad is a total fiesta with the blackened chicken, black bean and corn salsa, avocado, and tortilla strips! -Spiced Duck Salad: at first the portion of duck seemed rather small but it ended up being the perfect amount since the meat is rich and it went so well with the fennel, pine nuts,and cranberries. -Soft-serve: there's a soft serve machine located outside near the entrance so if you're just stopping by for dessert, just order up at the machine and you can enjoy your treat outside on the picnic tables. With its delicious menu, outdoor patio space, friendly service, and vintage treasures that will be sure to charm people at every age, Buddy Lou's is definitely a gem and must-visit spot. It's my second time coming to Buddy Lou's and I couldn't be more satisfied. Both times I've visited have been during the Pittsburgh to DC bike ride. This time I arrived soaked to the bone. They welcomed me in, let me dry off in the bathroom and then served me delicious beer and short ribs to die for. I cook short ribs myself, and I'm damn good at it. These are better. Just delish. Buddy Lou's has become haphazard and disorganized - don't rely on them for nutrition, especially if you're on the bike trail. If they're open they'll serve you a decent meal, but mostly what they serve now is closures and excuses. That's true even if you check in person a few hours ahead of time - they just close when they feel like it. Pandemic excuses are one thing but this place has stopped caring. If they're open, great, but do not make them part of your plans - and since the other choices in Hancock are all mediocre now that Weaver's is closed for repairs, and especially if you just biked 30-60 miles and need decent nutrition, you might do best to avoid staying in Hancock for the time being. What a shame - this place was good once. read more
