I visited Novi and I really wanted to try Detroit style pizza during my stay. Buddy's is definitely a nice spot to come in and have a beer, and stay for the pizza. It really felt like a nice pizza joint with all the decor. We were promptly seated and had some local craft beers which were great. We decided to go with a Caesar salad and the Detroiter (when in Rome). The salad was well executed, and the pizza was great. It had a crust that was crispy on the outside but softer on the inside. The toppings complimented the pizza quite well. I usually prefer thin crust pizza, but I really enjoyed the Detroiter. I'll definitely come back if I'm back in the area! Whenever we visit family in Michigan, I have to make at least one stop at Buddy's. There is nothing like this in Southern California. Been going to this location every year since 2005. We love this location. Parking is easy and plenty room for drop off of elderly relatives. The furniture is well kept and restaurant is really clean. Tables are nicely spread out. Service from the staff is always friendly despite sometimes difficult older patrons. The pizza is always good. Nice crusty edges with appropriate greased bottom. Popped in to get a soup on this cold winter day. It has been years since I've had Buddy's minestrone soup, but it's always been one of my favs. What I'm eating is NOT Buddy's classic minestrone soup! No longer smooth, creamy and flavorful. It tastes like any other restaurant, acidic broth with vegetables, kinda like the Olive Garden. So disappointing. All really good! All high caliber food! The pizza is more than a pizza, it's a deep, spiced up treat with great toppings, all baked to crispy and chewy in the traditional Detroit-style way. IYKYK! Came back into town and 1 night we save for Buddy's. We got take out to the hotel. It was a long day and we just wanted to chill at the hotel. And I have to say it was not up to par. Pizza order was wrong. The salad was just ok and the dressing was just a packet of Kraft dressing. I thought it lacked the usual freshness and ingredients. We ended up getting a few dollars back for the messed up order. But it was still not up to par. After years of coming here I look forward to it and it wasn't that great more lackluster than anything. Went to Detroit with a goal of trying Detroit-style pizzas from various places. Of the 3 places I tried within the span of 24 hours, this was our second favorite. I ordered for pickup at the Novi location and it was easy for pickup as they had a different door for dine in vs pick up. Upon pick-up they flashed the pizza to confirm if the order was right with the customer. It was a little too quick and I didn't notice that they put the onions that I didn't want on it but it was still fairly good (I just picked out the onions and put it on the slices my partner was eating). The pizza itself was nice and crispy, more crispy throughout the entire pizza vs the crust being crispy and the body of the pizza being more of a pizza dough. All in all still pretty good and I would order again if I'm lazy to wait, call in, or travel to the one location for the other pizza places (as Buddy's has many locations throughout Detroit). read more

I can't be to harsh on this review. I only had a beer and was going to eat until I looked at the menu. I looked at the prices for their 4 square pizza and asked "am I reading this correctly" I was it very over priced for literally 4 corners of pizza. I'm in the business and I know how grossly over priced this was. I don't know if their rent is that high they have to charge these prices or not, but no way would I pay those prices for that. I sent a picture of the menu to a friend of mine that owns a pizza place and said "can you imagine if you charged these prices?" He was shocked to say the least. We are disappointed. Our favorite Pizza place has fallen firmly out of our budget except for special occasions. We visited last night for the first time in a year for a family birthday. This is a place where we used to have dinner a couple times per month. The service was fantastic. The food was excellent. But for two 4-square pizzas, two draft beers and one individual salad, the bill including tip was $109. For pizza! And I don't think we are alone in recoiling from such predatory prices. We arrived at 6:55PM on a Friday night. We were seated immediately. There were many open tables that remained open for the 75 minutes that we were in the restaurant. Gone are the crowds and the 30 minute waits for a table. People simply cannot justify Buddy's prices. Buddy's has never been the cheapest Pizza joint. But since they were sold to a corporate buyer before COVID, their prices have become outrageous and their menu has been reduced in size. This is how you turn a great restaurant into a fond memory from the past. And that is truly a pity. read more
