It was my first time in Pittsburgh much less in winter. I was rather anxious because I wasn't…read moreexperienced when dealing with the possibility of snow and ice on the road. Because I planned to visit Fallingwater and other sights outside the city, I reserved a compact SUV from Enterprise for a week. I found their kiosk in the parking garage with relative ease, and they assigned me a 2025 Ford Escape (Photo 1). While the service rep was cordial, he merely pointed me in the direction of the vehicle. Since I wasn't familiar with the model, I struggled finding it, and he was already working with his next customer. Here's where my experience fell short as I would've appreciated a quick tutorial or at least a walkthrough of the dashboard. I honestly couldn't tell if the gas tank was full or even how to fill the tank. I eventually figured it out through trial-by-fire on the freeway to my first hotel, but it didn't boost my confidence. By comparison, I just had a car rental experience in Okinawa where the employee checked my rental car in painstaking detail and patiently walked through the features. Now that's what I call platinum service. Fortunately, the Escape served me well during the week. I found it easy to drive even during below-freezing temperatures, and I was pleasantly surprised how well it handled city traffic congestion and narrow parking spaces. Returning the SUV was pretty straightforward with no incident, and I did figure out how to fill the tank. The base cost was $389, but with the addition of roadside assistance coverage and other fees, it added up to close to $700. RELATED - Exploring Pittsburgh? UPDATED REVIEW: Issue Resolved, but the Experience Was Rough…read moreMy experience at the Cherry Hill location was extremely frustrating. The office was understaffed, and I was told to leave the keys during drop-off, as I was headed to the airport to catch a flight. Later, I was contacted about "damage" I never saw, and a month later I received a $750 charge for a 1" scratch on a $165 rental. With a spotless driving record and no incident during my rental, I disputed it. It took months of effort, and if I hadn't pushed so hard, I don't think it would have been resolved at all. The bright spot was the corporate representative who handled my case. He was patient, responsive, and stayed with it until everything was settled. I'm relieved the situation ended well, but I hope the Cherry Hill location improves staffing and return procedures so others don't end up in the same position.

Not the best car rental experience. Reserved in advance under one name and it was such a hassle to…read morechange the name. Finally finished checking in and the garage pickup was a disorganized mess, too. A younger employee brought the car around for us and pulled it all the way into a dead end lane, which was tricky to get out of in a new car that was completely unfamiliar to us. It's also a little suspicious that the cars get picked up in a poorly lit garage, where it's harder to assess damage before you leave and can be liable for missed dents, etc. later. In any case, we were finally on our way. On our fourth day of a five day reservation, we got a flat. My husband was able to change to the spare but when calling the Avis hotline for info, they were next to useless at what should be a fairly routine situation to resolve. We got passed around to like five different people and had to start all the way over with our contact info and explanation each time, only to eventually be told to drive an hour back to the shop to switch out for a new vehicle. Not sure if options were limited because this happened on a Sunday or what but two hours later, our day was back on track. The second vehicle smelled like weed and there wasn't really a way to document that so we'll just have to see if anything happens with that.

A terrible place to rent a car, so never again for me. I rented a Prius at a very good price,…read morearound $550, and I returned the car in the same condition with perhaps a little dust and dirt (it rained the entire 8-day period I had the car). A week after I returned it, they sent me a $450 bill for a "cleaning fee" and then another bill for $119 dent damage, which I never saw (and I checked before returning it.). The bill for the dent came with a link to see the photos, but the link is dead, a 404 Error message, so I can't even see that. All-in-all, it cost me over $1100 for the rental. I've never rented from Avis before and I will never rent from them again. Avoid them, completely!! I'm going back to Hertz.
