If you choose to eat here during lunch make sure you get here before 11:30 otherwise it is a long line but the wait is never too bad. I have tried several different sandwiches but my favorite is the French dip. The sauce on the side is so good. They serve you a hearty sub. The meat is packed on. Absolutely wonderful. It really has been quite a long time since I've had a delicious, simple sandwich of quality. There are establishments who skimp on quality ingredients to pay for an appealing atmosphere. There are others that have sandwich ingredients of questionable quality. This is not the case for buds buffet. When you walk into buds, don't be discouraged by the somewhat dingy atmosphere. They obviously pour in their profits for delicious food. While you are paying a somewhat "premium" price for the sandwich, you get much more bang for the buck than you can ever hope for anywhere else. Wow! Bud's in an awesome place. I went to the Amgen Tour of Ca bicycle races and had given myself some time for lunch hoping to find a place just like this. I must have walked around 4 or 5 blocks before stumbling across this gem. Like stepping back in time to the era when these "hof brau" style places, specializing in MEAT, were more common.... My recent visit with a family member from out of town was a perfect experience. My relative is well over 6 feet tall (yes, he plays college basketball) and pretty much eats only meat and potatoes. Green things are rarely in his diet. Anyway, he got some kind of enormous double meat special at Buds and was in heaven, downing the whole thing. Frankly it would have fed me for at least three meals, maybe four. I split a corned beef & swiss sandwich with my wife, which was just perfect for the two of us. I especially like the fact that the meat was run through the slicer and the sandwich was prepared to order right in front of me - none of this pre-sliced meat trucked in from a far-away factory. The food was tasty and the staff were eager to please, so we had a great time. On my previous visit, the line went all the way to the door, but it was well worth the wait. So after reading the reviews on Yelp this is one of those places I just had to try, especially since I would have never considered stopping given the rather blah decor. To the point... this place had a pretty delicious french dip. For under $10 you get a decent sized sandwich, but if you add a side and drink you will probably go over the one dollar-sign mark. Large portions and reasonable prices but ultimately a cafeteria setting and other quick service spots in the area may offer better options at similar price points. No frills lunch spot. Come here if you like meat.. a lot of meat. Besides the sandwiches they have daily specials including lasagna and beef stew. During my first visit my friend and I split an order of lasagna and a french dip sandwich. The lasagna was kinda generic and the sauce wasn't thick and robust like I like, but the sandwich was awesome. They slice up the roast to order. The second time, I stuck with the roast beef and added a side of mashed potatoes with gravy. Again, the gravy could've been thicker but all-in-all I killed it and needed a nap after. Mmm...meat (in my best Homer Simpson voice). As you wait in line to order your food, you already feel the food coma coming on and you haven't even consumed your meal yet...Yes! It's that good. The menu is on the wall so choose what you want but I'm sure you will change your mind as you see what everyone else before you is ordering. It didn't happen to me but it did happen to a few folks behind me. So be forewarned that what you think you may want may not be what you really want after seeing the freshly cooked meats carved and served on a platter. The meat is so juicy and tender that you might just want to go up to the counter and ask them for their recipe. Sometimes I secretly want to go up there and say, "may I have some more please," with my cutest little voice and my eyes gazing at them, just to see if they'd give me some because they felt bad for me. No such luck yet but maybe I'll have some courage to do it another time. We'll see. I'll let you know. This place is for sure heaven for my arteries. It's a place to get your meat and potatoes fix and you won't be disappointed. As you eat your hearty meal, you will day dream of your soft bed and fluffy pillow, that is until you finish your meal and have to walk back to work to work off all the calories you consumed. But for the love of eating of all that is great tasting but bad for you, come and check this place out. Be sure to come early because this place really does get busy and there aren't too many places to sit unless you want to just take your food to go. The only con (hence the minus 1 star) that I can think of is the fact that they are a bit slow and I'm not sure if that's just the workers or the people changing their mind. I've been to Bud's several times and food is consistent. Like the cafeteria feel of the place. The food is good and solid. I usually get the roast beef or pastrami sandwiches, which is piled on like a mountain. I also get the mashed potatoes or onion rings. The sandwiches are big enough to split or saved for later. They slice the meat to order as you shuffle thru the line which move swiftly. Tables fill up and empty as most are on their lunch hour. I have driven by this place so many times while downtown, but never knew exactly what they serve until today. My new jury duty cohort brought me here for lunch. I wasn't sure what to order and amazingly there wasn't a line everyone mentions. I went with a standard roast beef sandwich. OMG... they sliced some heavenly looking slices on top of that soft french roll. Had I known dipped was the way to go, I would have ordered a regular size. I love how uncomplicated the condiments on the sandwich: lettuce, onion, tomato, lettuce, mayo and mustard. They also give you a cuo of pepperchinis. I added pepper jack cheese, grabbed my chips and water and proceed to eat the BEST roast beef sandwich. So much meat and little lettuce AND the roll was so soft. If you are ever summons for jury duty, check this place out. Plenty of time to grab food, grab a coffee and make it back to the courtroom on time. When I worked downtown, this was the "must-go" restaurant for new employees and client visitors. Their meats are high quality, and I have been impressed with everything I have ordered (except the spaghetti as a side). The staff is a bit quirky, but they are all helpful and friendly. This place can get slammed during lunch hour, so try to get here when the doors open. After a long walk around K Street Buds Buffet caught my eye. It was nothing fancy but perhaps it could be a diamond in the rough. Walking in it reminded me of an older cafeteria. I wasn't sure if the Decore was supposed to be retro or if it was outdated. Still nothing fancy. I saw the very abundant menu with so-so prices. I tried the turkey club and was disappointed the 6" sandwich didn't come with cheese for $9. But I will say it was great. Maybe not filling to a big guy like me but definitely a great sandwich. Best place for a hot lunch in Downtown Sacramento!! The guys who work here are SUPER friendly and will suggest something good off the menu if you can't make up your mind. Can't wait til the cold weather comes around because one of the guys working described their stew to me and it sounds amazing!!! BIG portions -- half a sandwich can easily be a whole meal for an average adult. Their roast beef is the best I've ever had and the gravy is just as good. Good place to start for my 1st review. Bud's Buffet has one awesome pastrami sandwich. Huge portion of meat w/provolone, and the sandwich roll was nicely soft. I did not need the bag of chips on the side but ate it anyways cuz that's just me. Glad this place is a long walk back to work so I can work off that meal. read more
