Best place for a hot lunch in Downtown Sacramento!! The guys who work here are SUPER friendly and will suggest something good off the menu if you can't make up your mind. Can't wait til the cold weather comes around because one of the guys working described their stew to me and it sounds amazing!!! BIG portions -- half a sandwich can easily be a whole meal for an average adult. Their roast beef is the best I've ever had and the gravy is just as good. (And YES, they will put it on the side if you ask =)... that's how I get mine!) Good place to start for my 1st review. Bud's Buffet has one awesome pastrami sandwich. Huge portion of meat w/provolone, and the sandwich roll was nicely soft. I did not need the bag of chips on the side but ate it anyways cuz that's just me. Glad this place is a long walk back to work so I can work off that meal. read more

I love me some Bud's. My very 1st experience with Bud's was in Fairfield and they called it Joe's. The exact same place as Bud's but in a different city. I used to go there several times a week and hadn't been in for years and the guy remembered me and asked where I had been. I explained I moved to Sacto and he told me about Bud's opening there. Well, that's all it took! Hubby and I have been many times and have never EVER been disappointed. The eye of the round beef sandwich is my ultimate favorite and potato salad on the side is all it needs! Don't walk by this place and write it off because it's not "trendy" or "cool". Been eating here for years but I have to tell its really going down hill fast. For a change I ordered a pastrami on rye. It took dude 5 mins to find some rye bread not a good sign. Let me say the bread was stale and the pastrami was so dry I don't what else to say. The quality of the meat is terrible left over from prior days. They must be struggling if they don't improve their meat and purge old bread they will be another of the eatery's that have closed up in Downtown.The lasagna has also gone down hill used to be they would run out not anymore. Delicious sandwiches. I had the roast pork and my mom had the pastrami. We liked them both. The portions are huge!!! Could easily split one sandwich. Also has fries and Mac salad. Both were good. It's a meatatorium, your arteries begin to cringe the moment you open the door and step inside. I've never even tried the pasta, I get a half plate of meat with mash and gravy, it comes with a roll. I take half the meat and toss it into the roll and set it aside for another meal some other time. The gravy is usually a bit too salty, but the whole place, the cafeteria tables, the meat and potatoes, the wilty green salad swimming in a light italian dressing, has a kind of comfort food appeal that I come back for at regular intervals. The portion sizes here make it possible to incur a food injury, and sincerely regret your mouth and teeth. If you're worried about this, ask for a to go container when you pay for your meal, and put half the food into it before you begin to eat. read more

So crazy good, there just aren't words to describe it. The roast beef is cut fresh off the roast in front of you WHEN YOU ORDER IT! The bread is loving ladled with a garlicy au ju and the meat is piled high. The beef soup is available every day and tastes like the kind of soup you wish you could make at home. I need a nap. For reals. Bud's Reuben with a small side of beef vegetable soup. The beef vegetable soup was the best BV soup I've ever had. Probably second or third on the soup hiearchy at the moment (la bonne french onion and dad's chili...not the one at the kitchen, but the one at the sandwich shop with the beans....is chili soup?). Nothing gets me going like freshly sliced roasted meats (cue food porn music). The second I saw those giant mounds of goodness, I knew I was in for something special. My only nitpick would be that they need to spice the pastrami a little more aggresively. Oh yeah, and a reuben is supposed to be on rye, not a roll. First time trying this place. It is an old hole in the wall in downtown Sacramento. You stand in line and order. It was very warm inside and they had 2 fans blowing. I ordered a hot pastrami and the meat was luke warm at best. It was ok but I like a hot pastrami with melted cheese. I only ate half and was going to save the rest for later and ended up leaving it by accident. My brother had the French dip and he said it was really good. Their mashed potatoes looked good. This is just another place where I say, "why did I wait so long before coming here?" The line out the door whenever I go by at lunchtime, and their generally crappy operating hours (11 AM to 3 PM) deter me from visiting most of the time, but today it wasn't very busy so I stopped in. The sandwiches are huge, the lunch plates are hefty, and even the half-order lunch (a piddling $4.50 plus tax for the special of the day) is a filling meal. I got meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy; the potatoes smooth, the gravy seemed homemade, or convincingly homemade enough to fool me, and the loaf meaty, well-spiced and satisfying. Recently walked over to this place for lunch when I had jury duty downtown based on a recommendation from a friend and I was pleasantly surprised with my french dip sandwich. I'm somewhat of a purist, I don't think there should be any toppings, just good beef, good bread, and a rich au jus for dipping on the side. I ordered that plus a side of potato salad and my only complaint was that the potato salad still had some warmth to it, it needed more time in their fridge to chill before serving. I've been to Bud's twice, and only had the sandwiches so far. I've tried the pastrami and french dip sandwiches. Prices were about 6.99 for standard sandwich and 6.49 with cheese. They really do pile on the meat on the sandwiches and the sandwich maker guys are friendly. The lady cashier on the other hand .. seems a bit gruff. The big draw is the size of the sandwich, the meat is fresh and plentiful, but the sandwich itself doesn't taste super special. Not like a La Bonne sandwich which is an experience in itself. However, the pastrami sandwich was worth 2 days lunches and the roast beef (french dip) sandwich lasted me a lunch, and 2 DAYS WORTH of breakfast! That's 3 meals for 7 bucks! For breakfast I just ate the top half of half a sandwich and ate the bottom half the next day. The quantity is what keeps me coming back here :) read more

WHAT CAN BE BETTER WHEN THE CARNIVORE IN YOU CALLS. The seasoning on the meat can be salty on some days but overall its a good rub. This place offers a variety of freshly roasted deli meats from pastrami to turkey and even plain ham. You can get a sandwich from here piled high with whatever meat you wish. When i say piled high, I MEAN IT! The guy carving the meat will not disappoint you with the quantity. The ambiance isn't much, and the food is relatively simple. But man is it good. It is not a place you want to take vegetarians. The only thing I would stay away from here is the BBQ Mix. This mix seems to be made of of roast beef, pastrami, and whatever carved meat chunks or scraps in a BBQ sauce. It wasn't visually appetising to me at all... so I steer clear of the stuff. But the Roasted beef plate is a must try! at about 8 bucks... you will not leave hungry! The sandwiches are HUGE! I usually get a turkey sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes and end up taking half the sandwich home. The mashed potatoes are 2 big scoops smothered in brown gravy. If you want an excellent sandwich this is the place. They have a variety but the roast beef is the way to go. You can get it deli style with cheese, lettuce, tomato, etc. or you can get it beef dip style. The au jus is thick, so your bread doesn't get really soggy. The beef is so tender and lean, and they put a lot of it on your sandwich. Then they give you a side of that thick, delicious au jus to dip your sandwich in. Just perfect. yum! had a french dip (split w/ a friend), with a side of mashed potatoes and a green salad (she got the french fries). the french dip was definitely not as big as some of the other sandwiches that were being ordered (or maybe they put less meat on for a girl?), but it was bigger than most other places. the sandwich is on a french roll, one side dipped slightly in the au jus/gravy, and topped with freshly sliced roast beef, tomatoes, onions and lettuce (i've never had veggies on a french dip before, but it worked, and gave it more flavor). the mashed potatoes are 2 huge scoops, smothered in a thick gravy. the side salad comes in a little styrofoam cup, smothered in an italian-like dressing. i think it might've been pre-dressed as the lettuce was very soggy. the sandwich, 3 sides and a soda = almost $15. i wish the bread could've been toasted ever so slightly for the french dip. but, this is a man's man sandwich shop and i wouldn't dare ask for anything so frilly and high maintenance. ;) read more

Mmm this place is delicious! I'm never in the downtown area but man, when you gotta serve for jury duty, you're tempted to walk around and try out some new places nearby. The walk for me was less than 10 minutes from the courthouse and as I'm walking I'm like wait, yelp says buds buffet? I have no time for a buffet! Lol but I saw that this place is decently priced so I'm like whatever, let's check it out anyway. I walk inside and there's a lot of tables and space. It's like subway where you ask for what type of sandwich you want, what meat and your veggies. I got the pastrami sandwich with pepper jack cheese, pickles and lettuce and a side if aujeu. Man I love aujeu and I was so happy to see they had it! My total was a little less than 10 dollars and I honestly think it was worth the money. The amount of meat you get makes up for the price. I love this place. It is a must if you are in Sacramento. It's more like a carvery than a "buffet". Roast beef (french dip) is the standard of what I always get, but I've had the corned beef which is also good. It definitely speaks to my nostalgia it being cafeteria style as well.
