I typically work from home in Sparks, NV, but when I need to be in the office in Sacramento this is my first choice place to go to lunch. The sandwiches here are second to none. The meat is fresh and cut right in front of you after you order. They're not shy on quantity either. After reading all of the reviews on Yelp, I took a visiting friend to try Bud's Buffet. I was bent on getting the pastrami everyone's been talking about because I haven't found any pastrami sandwiches in Sacramento that I'm been pleased with. I was thinking this might be a New York deli type place where I'm going to get a huge sandwich on rye bread with pickles spears on the side. Well, this is not a New York deli place. But the sandwiches are huge. There was a special on a BBQ mix grill (3 kinds of meat in BBQ sauce) that was $8 including a side dish and a drink. It would have been more if I ordered the pastrami and a drink, so I went for the special instead since pastrami was one of the meats in the mix. The server scooped the meat onto the bread and I got my pic kof veggies. I couldn't believe how much meat they gave. It was overflowing (I think half of the meat was actually outside of the sandwich itself). The taste was awsome. I didn't realize how fast I was eating it until i was done with half of the sandwich and it only took a few minutes. And my belly was STUFFED. I didn't even think twice before picking up the 2nd half and start going at it, even with the full stomach. At the end, I didn't finish, the meat was dripping all over the place. The meat that fell out could easily make a whole other sandwich at Subway or Togo's. My friend also couldn't finish his sandwich. I think we'll skip the sides or even get half sandwiches next time... I will go back again, and I will get the pastrami. If the bbq mix grill is that good and nobody's talked about it, then I can imagine how good the pastrami is going to be. read more

The best sandwich I have ever eaten. I think I could have died happy after lunch. Prices are reasonable for the size of the sandwich. They have very good roasted meats, very juicy. Location is ok, not what you would expect, but I go for the good food. The servers are really cool and are fast. Dont let the long line fool you, it goes by pretty quick. I still need to try the mash potatoes and gravy, and i hear you can get it in a sandwich as well. Dont waste your money at subway or quiznos. read more

Not a buffet; it's a deli. I had the pastrami sandwich. Very tasty! For $6.79, i got a perfectly sliced heap of pastrami with fresh lettuce and tomato, all on an exceptionally good roll. No wait in line at 1.30pm on a Tuesday. Dated interior but no complaints from me as I'm here for the food. Wash it down with a great cup of coffee next door at Temple Coffee. read more

What fun....giving a five star review. Bud's is what it is....a wonderful old place with great sandwiches. It's "order at the counter, pick it up at the end, and pay on the way to the tables." Go right at lunchtime and you may be standing in a line almost out the door. When you order your sandwich, the guy behind the counter picks up a huge piece of meat, and slices it right before your sammo is built--wow, not pre-sliced crap in a little tub. No choice of bread...what they have is way OK, and cheese or whatever is extra. We have been there four times. The french dip is no less than wonderful...the "dip" is a slightly spicy thick gravy....don't get a scoop on the bread if you are taking out...the bread will get too mooshy. They give a generous cup on the side. The beef melts in your mouth. I have had it three out of the four times I have been there. Matt has had pastrami . It was just as tender as my beef. If you are into a traditional Reuben sandwich, it is not available here. It is a pastrami sandwich with a topping of saurkraut. Atmosphere is old school sandwich shop...formica tables with conference room type chairs. Nothing special. We get ours to go, and head to our favorite watering hole to eat. Everyone is super friendly...the people are efficient but they aren't rushed to shorten the line, and the people in line are not grumpy to rush through. I love this place---it's not pretty, but they serve the best sandwiches I have had in Sacramento. read more

Loaded meat sandwiches!!! Had the French Dip and Ruben. The au jus is the bomb! Don't let the exterior/interior deter you as it's old school cafeteria style. Very affordable prices for the amout of meat served on the sandwich. Definitely will go back when I'm in town again! read more

Roast beef sandwiches are spectacular. Meat is piled high on a fresh french roll, topped with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and mustard or mayonnaise if you'd like. But stay away from the corned beef. This isn't the Jewish deli variety ... way too salty, almost to the point of being inedible. There are weird lunch only weekday only hours but it's worth the trip. Piles of hand-sliced meat and perfect bread. It has the character of a 1940s luncheonette with the cafeteria style set up and a comfy and down to earth dining area. I really like the roast beef and pastrami sandwiches. There is enough meat to make at least one more sandwich. Its just a sandwich, but its a darn good and satisfying one. Service is quick. Be prepared to share a table with a stranger. If getting your meal to go, I suggest getting the tomato on the side. Typically by the time I get back to my office, the bottom bread is soggy because the weight of the meat has mushed the tomato. read more

This place is just alright. Ambiance is blah, but I know, I know what do ya expect for a lunch spot...maybe just a little updating and make it look a bit cleaner would be a nice touch.. Prices are ridiculous for what you get. Too overpriced for me to come back. My ex husband took me here and I was like ummmm ohhhhkayyyyyy. We shared a turkey sandwich with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy and it was decent. Actually I disliked the gravy but the rest was ok. Can't complain too much. It just was nothing special. It was very crowded and hardly could find a seat or a clean one at that. No staff was out there cleaning tables and maintains dining area as people came and went. Their sides were expensive as well...meal just keeps adding up and for lunch you don't wanna spend too much on lunch especially when most of us are on budgets through the week. Wow you guys weren't kidding about the huge all meat sandwitches here...and for $6.50...I'm going to die sooner than later from the massive red meat high. I've been coming here once every week since I read the reviews here. I usually get the Hot Pastrami with Provolone and a side of mashed potatoes and that wonderful gravy. I can never finish the sandwitch and end up taking half back to the office. The place is as utilitarian as they come so no fancy shmancy hoopla here but the customers are a good mix of white and blue collar folks. The food is more along the line of comfort food, some say the meats a bit bland but they give you a lot of it. Nothing sophiticated about the sandwitches though (mustard, mayo, lettuce tomato) so dont expect truffle oil and patte. If you looking for fancy sandwitches then go to Dad's Deli. But If your downtown and your hankering for a hunk of beef cake.....call m...errr go to Buds. read more

I can't believe I've lived in Sacramento for 28 years and worked almost all of those downtown and never got to Bud's. But I finally did. The place is practically a cafeteria inside. Listen, I'm all about "if it ain't broke", but really how hard is it to freshen up an "institution" with some paint, tables and chairs that have been around as long as Governor Brown's FIRST term, and a little decor? Not much...just a little. But ok, I'll play. Waited in line with everyone else who is a Bud devotee and placed my order for a reuben sandwich. You walk through the line, get you stuff and go pay at a register. Ok, first the positives...you gotta be impressed with their meats. It couldn't be any fresher. My only negative is since when is a reuben served on a roll?, but ok, at least the roll was soft and fresh. The meat was crazy good. I mean, crazy good. I ate that whole damn sandwich (and they are good sized). End of the day...I'd go back when I had a specific hunkering for pastrami. But please think about doing something to the place. read more

I came here because of the raving reviews and I was in the mood for a sub. I ordered their classic Italian and it was OK... Plus side is you actually get a lot of meat in your sandwiche. The staff who made my sandwhich was very courteous and greeted me however, the cashier was a different story. She was very rude, didn't acknowledge me as I walked up to her -in fact she said abosutely nothing to me at all during the entire transaction. She simply looked at my plate with silence until I told her what I had ordered, she then took my card and handed me a receipt to sign. I wanted a copy of my receipt to keep but her overall attitude towards me was simply that she didn't want to help me so I left it at that. I've heard many great reviews about their awesome customer service but I experienced the opposite. Quite disappointing, the experience left a rather bad taste in mouth afterwards. They say the experience affects the food and I have to agree on this case. Perhaps they need to retrain or hire someone else who actually cares about their job. read more
