This Capitol ave location is very popular and always packed, we arrived after a graduation earlier in the day so a few large parties were already seated when we arrived. The waiter informed us it was still happy hour so we ordered a couple of cocktails. I got the Cadillac Margarita with clase Azul and a Paloma. Complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip were served while ordering, chips were cold but the salsa and dip were very tasty. Our group ordered a few mixed taco combos, enchiladas and quesadillas- all came with cilantro rice and black beans. The quality and flavor of every dish is always on point, but the guacamole was not something I would order again. Boozy cocktails and an inviting atmosphere; zocalo is a friendly and fast paced restaurant that is great for large groups. You can even rent out a private area for your events. Been years since I've been to Zócalo. It felt like a good day to sit on a patio, enjoy some Mexican food, and I've always liked the Midtown location. Truthfully, I've always thought the food was pretty mid and wondered why it consistently makes the Michelin Guide. But I decided today was the day to give it another chance. We were seated immediately upon arrival, and the service was excellent throughout. Water glasses were constantly refilled, and the staff kept the chips, salsa, and beans coming. The complimentary beans were especially good, with a deep smoky flavor that stood out. The chips were solid and the salsa tasted fresh. We ordered the fish and shrimp ceviche to share. It was good overall, though I didn't think the seafood tasted quite as fresh as it could have. The fish and shrimp were a bit softer than I'd prefer, which made me think it may have been prepared a day or two earlier. Still, it was enjoyable. For my entrée, I ordered the two enchiladas en mole, noting that it's one of the restaurant's Michelin-recognized dishes. I have to admit, I was impressed. The enchiladas were packed with chicken and cheese, the tortillas tasted fresh, and the mole was excellent. Complex, smoky, sweet, and full of warm spice, it was easily the highlight of the meal. The addition of plantains was unexpected but worked beautifully with the sauce. The rice and beans on the side were good, though nothing particularly memorable. In fact, I thought the complimentary refried black beans were better than the whole black beans served with the entrée. Overall, I was much more impressed than I was during my visit years ago. The food quality seems to have improved, and the service and atmosphere were both excellent. If you've been avoiding Zócalo because of a past disappointing experience, I'd say it's worth giving it another try. read more

Such a cute spot with a great aesthetic! They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice, but it does get pretty loud inside--so it can be a bit hard to hear conversations if you're with a group. They start you off with salsa, black bean dip, and chips, and the black bean dip was definitely my favorite. I ordered the flautas and the salmon bowl, both had great portions and tasted fresh with really flavorful ingredients. Parking can be a little tough, so I'd recommend giving yourself extra time to find a spot. The wait staff was friendly, but they didn't come around much to check on us or refill drinks, which would've made the experience even better. Stopped by Zócalo Midtown on a Tuesday afternoon and it ended up being such a vibe. We were seated right away, and with the rain and the big windows it felt really nice and cozy. The place itself is beautiful, full bar, big screens, and everyone was dressed nice which added to the experience. I ordered the tostada salad and it did not disappoint fresh, flavorful, and really good. We also got a few pitchers (blackberry, mango, and Cadillac) and they were actually pretty strong. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive, constantly checking in and refilling our drinks. When a couple more friends joined us, they moved us to a bigger booth with no issue which I appreciated. A group of us stopped here to grab some margaritas, for 3 singles and 5 doubles (8 total drinks), it was $263.00. I've paid less than this at full service resorts. Came in yesterday for a friends birthday, we do this every year. I finally was intentional in taking photos. Pozole needed some salt, but was delicious after I added salt. Regardless, The food is consistent and delicious here. We also got the fish tacos and salmon tacos. Their beans and rice are so yummy! For birthdays they sing you a song and come out with a sparkler, they make it really special. The dessert is delicious too! Wow, I have nothing but remarkable things to say about this place. My girls and I came here for lunch on Valentine's Day and I truly had a fantastic experience! I have to start off by talking about our waitress, Talisa. Her demeanor and service were EXACTLY how well customer service should be nowadays. She gave a full rundown of the drink menu when we asked for recommendations, and actually recommended the strawberry crème espresso martini. We ordered two of those, as well as a blackberry margarita, which were all terrific! Talisa also brought over complimentary pineapple muffins which were also quite delicious. When it came to ordering food, she recommended the most ideal dish from all the taco options. So I ordered the taco plate from which I chose two shrimp tacos and a fish taco, and they was AMAZING. The mango flavors I tasted on the tacos were a great surprise, and the cilantro rice the dish came with was also a great pairing that I truly enjoyed! I only took pictures of the drinks, but when my taco plate arrived, it looked so good that I completely forgot to take a photo. Sometimes, it's rare to come to an establishment where the service, as well as the food are BOTH exceptional, but in my opinion, Zócalo intentionally delivers. Wonderful experience tonight the day before valentines! Francisco was our waiter and was amazing. Honestly their customer service in general is great. The complimentary salsa is a little spicy for me but the table loved it. The complimentary beans were good but do have a small amount of spice if you're sensitive to that. We had the fish tacos, the Zoco quesadilla and the carnitas tacos. The flavor is THERE for all their food. The carnitas were incredibly tender and the fish tacos had a great texture. Zocalo was decked in Valentine's Day decor when we went in late January. I always like that this location in downtown is always well decorated and really to celebrate something, not matter what time of year. We enjoyed the house salsa and bean dip but the chips with a bit hard and firm. (We've been here many times and remembered the chips may have been more the thin and chirpy kind in the past.) We got there a bit early so we ordered the happy hour fish tacos first. They were great! We weren't that hungry so we shared the Tampiquena (their delicious marinated steak, grilled portobello, and mole enchilada combo). The steak, portobello, and cilantro rice were great as always. We came here around 3 for happy hour on a Friday before holiday weekend. Just so happened to be graduation weekend as well. Surprisingly busy, but we easily got a seat at the bar. The restaurant is massive, with patio seating on both sides. Multiple TVs as well if you're interested in watching any games. Happy hour is available in the entire restaurant. The complimentary chips and salsa was great. Love that you get a black bean purée/salsa in addition as you rarely see this. We opted for the De la Casa margarita and the Cadillac margarita. Both were very well made! Other pictures showed the glass size, but you couldn't really tell so the picture does show a comparison to the water glass (ie they are the same glass lol) The quesadilla was less quesadilla and more burrito, but either way delicious and super full of meat. The shrimp tacos were good. I was excited for the pineapple habanero salsa mostly, but it really wasn't anything to write home about--pretty standard shrimp taco in corn tortilla not super spicy. The flavor was good. Chicken quesadilla: this is really good love the poblano sauce. When it came out, I thought I got a burrito for a second. It's shaped like a burrito. Great flavors in the meat. Rice and beans: the sides for all of this was tons of rice and beans. The rice is amazing. We'd been wanting to try this place for a long time and finally had an errand to run right by the restaurant. The 4.0 rating on Yelp would lead you to believe you'd be having a good, not great experience. Our experience was top notch. Exterior was clean and appealing, hostess greeted us and we were seated right away. Service from beginning to end was top shelf. Several people checked on us and drink refills were automatic. We had the tortilla chips and salsa, Chile Rellenos, Nachos and I think one other item. It was lunch, not dinner but it was still one of the top 5 Mexican meals we've ever had. An especially excellent job on the sauces, including the mole. My wife also had a margarita, which she said was phenomenal. It was our first visit and the waiter brought us a complimentary Tres Leches dessert. Also terrific. I know bad things can happen, and this is a very busy restaurant. They are on top of it and there are several managers on the floor monitoring and helping the work flow. Food and service was great, definitely a modern Mexican restaurant as advertised. We had a late dinner here so didn't get to experience their patio, but it looks like a lovely place to dine outside. A couple call outs: I loved the guacamole. It was bright green and fresh, and paired perfectly with the chips for the table. The flan - AMAZING and a must try. It's super creamy with some nice texture from the candied almonds sprinkled on top. The cilantro lime rice was very flavorful and paired well with all of the mains we ordered. I ordered the cochinita pibil - I haven't had this before so I don't know how it compares to others but someone in my party says it's on the sweeter side for this dish. It was sweet but paired with the tortillas and sides of rice and beans, it evened out the flavor. We tried all 3 desserts and I liked the flan best. Great first visit! From the moment we walked in to the moment we left, the staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming. The dining room had such a warm, inviting vibe -- I honestly don't think there's a bad seat in the entire place. We recently visited a similar size Italian restaurant in Walnut Creek that couldn't have been more different. Despite having a reservation system and a beautiful buildout, the front lobby was chaotic and completely disorganized. It just goes to show that nice décor doesn't guarantee a smooth experience. It was more of a burrito - cheese, beans and chicken stuffed into a tortilla, which was then smothered in a delicious tasting cilantro based sauce. The whole thing was delicious but heavy. The sauce was everything on that plate. The accompanying rice and beans were just ok. The rice was a little dry. The en mole enchiladas was also pretty big. The mole was very sweet, which I didn't like. The enchiladas was fine but the sweet mole put me off. My husband liked it more than me so he ended up eating most of that plate and we took the quesadilla home. Pricing wise, the restaurant is medium. There are some really pricey restaurants in the area, but these guys are more reasonable. Ambiance is bright, spacious and lavishly elegant. If you plan to drive, you will need to spend some time looking for parking. There is only metered street parking in the area. read more

The weather was perfect for outdoors and we were the first ones to get seated outside, but the place was packed full within the next 30 minutes. Portobello mushroom topped with onions and stuff under held of the steak. This is a big portion - enough to share. Subbed rice and beans with side salad. They don't have traditional dressings, but different vinaigrettes. I ended up just getting some olive oil for the salad and it was good, with all the blue cheese that came with the salad. It was a beautiful salad, as far as side salads go. The rice and beans were delicious too, but i was very happy with the salad. I wasn't charged extra for the substitution. Fish tacos Great! Overall, you are paying for the decor and the service, and the enjoyable food. For the atmosphere, I wasn't too happy with our server asking about 5 times whether we wanted guacamole with our chips. I didn't like it the first time he asked, but didn't mind. It's like a server asking if we want a margarita before we've looked at the menu (not saying that the server did this). But then he asked 4 more times. We ended up getting some ($12) but it was just ok. I don't like being pushed like this, especially in this kind of atmosphere. Is the food worth the money? No, but with the combination of the atmosphere, sure. Would I come back? Sure, with the right people and for the right occasion. But this isn't my weekly date night. read more
