Zócalo is the type of restaurant that Mexican cuisine has needed. Most people think of Mexican food and immediately think of cheap, greasy late-night eats thanks to places like Taco Bell. While I have a special place in my heart for Taco Bell, Mexican cuisine has made leaps and bounds thanks to dedicated individuals who have fought hard to bring its intricate flavors and eye catching colors to the public. Walking into Zócalo, I was struck by the sheer beauty of the interior design. Light, airy color palettes and patterns along with some modern rustic finishes adorn a double height interior. This accomplishes 2 things in the mind of the diner: it transports the diner out of the city and into a grand yet familiar setting, changing expectations for the day! Our server was Angel and we came at the tail end of lunch service on a weekday, so there were plenty of seats immediately available. While I'm sure our server was tired after the midday rush, he was still jovial and full of recommendations. Angel was attentive and charismatic--lightly ribbing me for dining with two beautiful women (unbeknownst to him these were my sister and cousin, but I'll take the ego boost haha)! I opted for the carnitas wet burrito because burritos are awesome and I had heard their carnitas was especially delicious. The hearsay was confirmed on my end as the pork was delicious, juicy, and flavorful. As a lover of burritos, I was surprised to get a side of rice and black beans in addition to there being some inside the burrito. That's okay because it just meant that I had a couple easy sides to pair a protein with later as I took them home with me. My only nitpick for my dish was that it needed some acidity and spice to really take it up a notch. I should have asked for either some fresh lime slices or if they had a hot sauce to add. My sister ordered the Enchilades en mole and loved her dish! I tried a bit of hers and understood why this dish is a favorite. Complexity and depth of flavor from the mole is apparent and their choice of serving plantains added a beautiful counterpoint of sweetness to balance out the dish. I forgot to ask to try my cousin's Salmon bowl, but she was very happy with her choice. Overall, I would recommend Zócalo as a solid spot to impress someone or if you are feeling ennui from the concrete jungle of the metropolitan city life. read more

I ordered the Arrachera which was their version of a carne asada plate. The grilled asada was served with a side of green rice, beans, a side of tortillas and a grilled green pepper. The flavors blended well but the service was not the best which left a bad taste in my mouth. The waiter's expression changed when he asked if we were ordering appetizers or drinks and we said we would just stick with water. I'm assuming the bad service was because we he assumed we were not going to tip well because we didn't order much food. It was difficult to get someone to refill our waters, bring us our check, and to just get Togo boxes. It was not very busy which made it all worse. I would've understood if it was a busy night and they were falling behind. We also ordered the salmon bowl which was light and healthy. Overall the food was great! But we left not feeling like they lived up to their potential, we believe Zocalo is worth a second try. read more

I had only been to Zocalo a couple times prior today but I will be coming back for sure. The michelada was refreshing and the food was amazing. The chile verde chilaquiles were 11/10. The tortilla chips were nice and crispy and the childe verde was delicious. The arrachera was 12/10 and is one of the best I've had in Sac. Such rich flavor. I'm not much of a French toast person but the French toast here was 13/10 and must try. Other French toast I've had was too sweet but this one was perfect. I loved the ambiance and that they had multiple tvs with different games going and the staff was quick and helpful. It was my birthday and they provided complimentary ice cream. We got seated fairly quickly since my friend and I were only a party of two. This place was poppin since Argentina was playing the World Cup, so you can sense the excitement and energy. It started off pretty normal for me-no reservation,so I put my name down on the waitlist then proceeded to walk across the street at another popular restaurant and put my name down there as well and started my little game of "Which restaurant was going to text me first with a seat?" To kill time the wifey and I grabbed a seat at their beautiful bar in the middle of the restaurant and ordered a couple of drinks and enjoyed their complimentary chips and salsa. I ordered an Oaxacan Old Fashioned($17.00) and the wifey got a Chile Pineapple Paloma($18.00) Both drinks were dynamite and I would order again.The Chili Pineapple featured a Chili Liqueur that gave the drink a nice bite and the Old Fashioned featured La Luna Mezcal which gave the drink a very unique smoky twist-quite enjoyable. As luck would have it,Zocalo won my little contest and texted me with a seat first,so we made our way to our seat at the outside dining area. We decided to go with a few things. -Ceviche Verde($19.00) -Quesadilla Oaxaca($12.00) -Tampiquena($29.00) I'm a massive fan of Ceviche,I literally could eat it every day,so was looking forward to this dish & it didn't fail to impress,very flavorful with its Aguachile and for sure had a kick to it-very nicely seasoned. The Quesadilla was very tasty with its freshly made tortillas and Jack cheese and chicken on the inside topped with Cotija Cheese. The Tampiquena was a wonderful dish.Its a medium well steak,served with a cheese enchilada in their signature mole sauce and a portobello mushroom topped with Jack cheese.This dish was served with a side of Cilantro-Lime Rice and Black Beans and freshly made tortillas. This was so delicious and so filling-perfectly cooked,perfectly seasoned an-I definitely recommend it but be sure to come with an appetite-it's a solid dish. This was for sure not a cheap meal but this also not a cheap place-Zocalo is truly a wonderful restaurant and a true star in the Sacramento dining scene. Had a wonderful late lunch with my mom and brothers at Zocalo. This Capitol ave location is very popular and always packed, we arrived after a graduation earlier in the day so a few large parties were already seated when we arrived. The waiter informed us it was still happy hour so we ordered a couple of cocktails. I got the Cadillac Margarita with clase Azul and a Paloma. Complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip were served while ordering, chips were cold but the salsa and dip were very tasty. Our group ordered a few mixed taco combos, enchiladas and quesadillas- all came with cilantro rice and black beans. The quality and flavor of every dish is always on point, but the guacamole was not something I would order again. Boozy cocktails and an inviting atmosphere; zocalo is a friendly and fast paced restaurant that is great for large groups. You can even rent out a private area for your events. Been years since I've been to Zócalo. It felt like a good day to sit on a patio, enjoy some Mexican food, and I've always liked the Midtown location. Truthfully, I've always thought the food was pretty mid and wondered why it consistently makes the Michelin Guide. But I decided today was the day to give it another chance. We were seated immediately upon arrival, and the service was excellent throughout. Water glasses were constantly refilled, and the staff kept the chips, salsa, and beans coming. The complimentary beans were especially good, with a deep smoky flavor that stood out. The chips were solid and the salsa tasted fresh. We ordered the fish and shrimp ceviche to share. It was good overall, though I didn't think the seafood tasted quite as fresh as it could have. The fish and shrimp were a bit softer than I'd prefer, which made me think it may have been prepared a day or two earlier. Still, it was enjoyable. For my entrée, I ordered the two enchiladas en mole, noting that it's one of the restaurant's Michelin-recognized dishes. I have to admit, I was impressed. The enchiladas were packed with chicken and cheese, the tortillas tasted fresh, and the mole was excellent. Complex, smoky, sweet, and full of warm spice, it was easily the highlight of the meal. The addition of plantains was unexpected but worked beautifully with the sauce. The rice and beans on the side were good, though nothing particularly memorable. In fact, I thought the complimentary refried black beans were better than the whole black beans served with the entrée. Overall, I was much more impressed than I was during my visit years ago. The food quality seems to have improved, and the service and atmosphere were both excellent. If you've been avoiding Zócalo because of a past disappointing experience, I'd say it's worth giving it another try. read more

Such a cute spot with a great aesthetic! They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, which is nice, but it does get pretty loud inside--so it can be a bit hard to hear conversations if you're with a group. They start you off with salsa, black bean dip, and chips, and the black bean dip was definitely my favorite. I ordered the flautas and the salmon bowl, both had great portions and tasted fresh with really flavorful ingredients. Parking can be a little tough, so I'd recommend giving yourself extra time to find a spot. The wait staff was friendly, but they didn't come around much to check on us or refill drinks, which would've made the experience even better. Stopped by Zócalo Midtown on a Tuesday afternoon and it ended up being such a vibe. We were seated right away, and with the rain and the big windows it felt really nice and cozy. The place itself is beautiful, full bar, big screens, and everyone was dressed nice which added to the experience. I ordered the tostada salad and it did not disappoint fresh, flavorful, and really good. We also got a few pitchers (blackberry, mango, and Cadillac) and they were actually pretty strong. Our waiter was super friendly and attentive, constantly checking in and refilling our drinks. When a couple more friends joined us, they moved us to a bigger booth with no issue which I appreciated. Solid choice for dinner! We were a party of 5 that was seated quickly. They keep the chips and salsa coming which was great! We got a variety of dishes which each were delicious. I also got a mojito and it was refreshing. Our server was kind and quick. The inside of the restaurant was very nicely decorated. It was clean as well. It was a bit noisy but it was during the World Cup so makes sense. They have outdoor and indoor seating. Parking can be a bit hard to find because it's midtown. That said, the quality didn't taste like enough for four or more stars. The ingredients for their sides taste fresh, flavorful and are cooked, for example, to maintain freshness of vegetables. Wow, I have nothing but remarkable things to say about this place. My girls and I came here for lunch on Valentine's Day and I truly had a fantastic experience! I have to start off by talking about our waitress, Talisa. Her demeanor and service were EXACTLY how well customer service should be nowadays. When we sat, we were welcomed by her forthcoming, warm personality and her bright energy! She gave a full rundown of the drink menu when we asked for recommendations, and actually recommended the strawberry crème espresso martini. We ordered two of those, as well as a blackberry margarita, which were all terrific! Talisa also brought over complimentary pineapple muffins which were also quite delicious. When it came to ordering food, she recommended the most ideal dish from all the taco options. So I ordered the taco plate from which I chose two shrimp tacos and a fish taco, and they was AMAZING. The mango flavors I tasted on the tacos were a great surprise, and the cilantro rice the dish came with was also a great pairing that I truly enjoyed! I only took pictures of the drinks, but when my taco plate arrived, it looked so good that I completely forgot to take a photo. Sometimes, it's rare to come to an establishment where the service, as well as the food are BOTH exceptional, but in my opinion, Zócalo intentionally delivers. The complimentary salsa is a little spicy for me but the table loved it. The complimentary beans were good but do have a small amount of spice if you're sensitive to that. We had the fish tacos, the Zoco quesadilla and the carnitas tacos. The flavor is THERE for all their food. The carnitas were incredibly tender and the fish tacos had a great texture. Zocalo was decked in Valentine's Day decor when we went in late January. I always like that this location in downtown is always well decorated and really to celebrate something, not matter what time of year. We enjoyed the house salsa and bean dip but the chips with a bit hard and firm. (We've been here many times and remembered the chips may have been more the thin and chirpy kind in the past.) We got there a bit early so we ordered the happy hour fish tacos first. They were great! We weren't that hungry so we shared the Tampiquena (their delicious marinated steak, grilled portobello, and mole enchilada combo). The steak, portobello, and cilantro rice were great as always. Regardless, The food is consistent and delicious here. We also got the fish tacos and salmon tacos. Their beans and rice are so yummy! For birthdays they sing you a song and come out with a sparkler, they make it really special. The dessert is delicious too! A couple call outs: I loved the guacamole. It was bright green and fresh, and paired perfectly with the chips for the table. The flan - AMAZING and a must try. It's super creamy with some nice texture from the candied almonds sprinkled on top. The cilantro lime rice was very flavorful and paired well with all of the mains we ordered. I ordered the cochinita pibil - I haven't had this before so I don't know how it compares to others but someone in my party says it's on the sweeter side for this dish. It was sweet but paired with the tortillas and sides of rice and beans, it evened out the flavor. We tried all 3 desserts and I liked the flan best. We didn't get any drinks so I can't comment on their cocktails. For food, we ordered the Zocalo quesadilla with chicken and the Michelin Guide recommended En Mole enchiladas with 2 enchiladas. We got complimentary chips with salsa and beans for the table. The chips and salsa were ok. Salsa was not too spicy. The Zocalo quesadilla was anything but simple. It was more of a burrito - cheese, beans and chicken stuffed into a tortilla, which was then smothered in a delicious tasting cilantro based sauce. The whole thing was delicious but heavy. The sauce was everything on that plate. The accompanying rice and beans were just ok. The rice was a little dry. The en mole enchiladas was also pretty big. The mole was very sweet, which I didn't like. The enchiladas was fine but the sweet mole put me off. My husband liked it more than me so he ended up eating most of that plate and we took the quesadilla home. Pricing wise, the restaurant is medium. There are some really pricey restaurants in the area, but these guys are more reasonable. Ambiance is bright, spacious and lavishly elegant. If you plan to drive, you will need to spend some time looking for parking. There is only metered street parking in the area. read more
