My parents and I used to come to this place almost every night for dinner, and interestingly enough, I live in the house that the founder of this restaurant lived in; however, that doesn't make me biased to liking the food here. Essentially, it's nothing above average, overpriced, and CERTAINLY not healthy. The only real appeal is the Wednesday night stake deal which they used to have, although I'm not sure if it any longer exists because I haven't been back in years (thankfully). I don't get it. I honestly don't get why all those fancy Houston folks were crowded in this space eating this food and standing in this line. We came here when our brunch crew blossomed into a lunch horde that needed food fast. That much, we got. A few things I can tell you: - Those are not chilaquiles. They look like they taste good." - Don't go here for a mimosa brunch. The carafe they give you has about a split's worth of bubbly and is then filled with OJ. Not worth it - Wine pours. They're a thing. They're actually measured in places, sometimes. This is so people know they're getting a proper glass of wine, and the restaurant can know how much they make from each bottle. I was given a half glass of wine. No shit, it was literally (and I mean that in the proper sense) half the amount that should go into a glass of wine. When I picked up, noticed extra side of grits, checked my bill and I was charged 2.50 for extra side which was not ordered. When I tried to explain the situation to the cashier, he got stressed out and told me that sometimes the kitchen gives extra food, he seemed to not understand that I did not order an extra side and was charged. Keep in mind, this was on a weekday, I kept my voice low and respectful and no one was in line behind me. The restaurant was not very busy. To the point: overrated, over priced, boring and lazy. Came for breakfast, today, Wednesday. Place is MAYBE half full. Wanted to order french toast, but it comes with NO sides. So ordered breakfast special, and substituted one piece of french toast for the 2 pancakes, upcharge of $1.00, nice. Asked for apples and pecans on french toast, but found out apples are not even cooked down, just raw slices dropped on top (boring, lazy, unimaginative), so opted for bananas & pecans. My scrambled eggs came out flat & hard as carboard, not scrambled, but cooked on griddle and simply chopped with a spatula and scrapped off the griddle (LAZY). My bacon was burnt, and as dry as jerky, probably sat under a hot lamp for a while (lazy, disgusting). French toast was OK, using that term very loosely. Next time try cooking the bananas in orange liqueur. My girlfriend asked for syrup, was directed to a dirty, self serve corner where condiments and tea and lemons were. Nothing but the best again, "maple" syrup with no maple, and about as natural as Pamela Anderson (greedy, lazy, unimaginative). My girlfriend's breakfast was no better, but she was smarter than me, and ordered sunny side up eggs, which requires less culinary expertise than difficult scrambled eggs. However, her pancakes were hard and dry like my bacon, and tiny. Her bacon burnt and drier than mine. We ordered a carafe of mimosas, and even the cashier looked at us like "you SURE?", after reminding us it was $12 ($6 too much in my opinion, for the old oj and cheap, bottom shelf champagne). One of the only places I ever venture out for breakfast/brunch with family or friends. Ambiance: Warm and cozy. Rustic place with wood paneling and dark stone floors. Wooden tables with old (sometimes broken) chairs. Crowds here can be huge, especially on weekends around 10. Be prepared for a line out the door. BG provides free coffee outside for those standing in line. There is good news if it is crowded though- your food will come out 10x faster than normal. The kitchen really gets rollin'. Large flat screen TVs in the corners that usually play sports (or Saturday morning cartoons for the kids). 2 fireplaces that are on during most cool mornings. Average-sized patio outside that is decent, though backs up to Woodway so it tends to get pretty loud. Staff is not terribly friendly, but they get the job done. Price: Pretty cheap, and you are not tipping for table service. Last time I got pancakes ($3.95) and bacon ($2.95). Coffee is another 2 and something but the cinnamon roasted is SO worth it. I bought a bag for $10 last time to take to school for me. For the price, the pancakes are the best value. THey are the size of an entire large plate and you will only need just one (though I've taken down 2 before. Judge me). Fruit will set you back $4 for reasons unbeknownst to me. Entrees range between 7-10. Food: Almost everything is delicious, though there are a few things I would avoid. My favorites are pancakes (wheat batter..), a veggie egg white omelette, french toast, bacon, and hashbrowns. I would not recommend anything that comes with beans or tortillas, nor the biscuits and gravy. The gravy tastes like water with a shake or 2 of pepper thrown in. Grilled chicken has a nice seasoning, but steer clear of the fish dishes. French fries are not what you typically find and take some getting used to. Went to this place for a quiet meal and wasn't disappointed by the quietness of the restaurant. Several reviewers commented on the Red Beans and Rice. I ordered it and I was not impressed, very bland and flavorless. My compatriots ordered breakfast and a club sandwich, and they enjoyed their meals. They have a deal that you get a pitcher for $12 that probably contained enough liquid to fill four full wine glasses. Came in for breakfast which in my opinion is the easiest meal to prepare and yet so many places can't seem to get it right. Also in a city like Houston that is so diverse I expect so much more. Long story short I ordered the potatoes and eggs which come with refried beans, I asked the guy working the counter if they contained any pork or meat to which he says no there's no meat they're made with bacon grease. I'm always amazed at how the word pork is so confusing to folks especially those in the food industry. Anyways I substituted my refried beans with hash browns. First my potatoes and eggs turned out to only be eggs and onions and the hash browns were super greasy and soggy. The orange juice was the only thing that was good, I went to get some water and was pretty shocked at how dirty the clear plastic cups were. Major thumbs down for this place. We were in the neighborhood and saw this place. We wanted to grab some lunch before taking my little one to the ice cream shop next door. The food was less than average. There was no seasoning on anything. I had the peppered pork chops with mash potatoes and corn, my friend had the fish and fries, and my son had the chicken finger basket. This place came highly recommended. I was looking for a place in Houston that does big sticky cinnamon rolls & this was the place I was directed to. I was terribly disappointed! I was given a small, dry, bland and certainly not ooey gooey cinnamon roll. The rest of the food that I ordered was also terribly bland bland bland. The salt and pepper could not save this seasonless food. The cashiers were snooty and the atmosphere the other patrons created was not welcoming at all. Definitely not the sweet down home Grandmother's kitchen , anybody is welcome place I was hoping for. If you love bland food and a snooty atmosphere at a place that claims to be a casual dinner, then you'll fit right in. On another note, I'm surprised anyone of ethnicity gave this place a good rating, When I went, I decided to sit inside and I was surrounded by a sea of blond heads. BEFORE I bought the Groupon I checked their menu and looked at the prices to see how much it would cost for my husband and I to eat there with the Groupon. It wasn't too much so I decided to try it, since we hadn't eaten there before and neither had our friends I didn't want to spend too much in case it wasn't good. We went in to use our Groupon and on the Groupon it said that we had to mention the Groupon BEFORE ordering so we did. When everything was rung up I noticed that we were overcharged about $3.00 according to the online menu. The guy told me that their prices just went up (which seemed shady to me - did it go up for Groupon users?). I told him that I just checked their menu the day before and that the buffalo burger was $3.00 less online than what was on my receipt! He gave us our $3.00 back but I still found the ordeal unethical so I contacted Groupon. Groupon gave us a credit which was awesome - I didn't know that they did that if you weren't happy. Again, their food is so good that I still go back there and pay full price, so they would have gotten 4 stars had they practiced better business. =D read more
