Bullwinkle's was one of our favorite stops in West Yellowstone. We read reviews about the owner, Brenda, being super involved in the restaurant. Sure enough the moment we walked in we met her. An absolutely wonderful lady who took care of us from beginning to end of our experience and works her butt off to make sure that everybody has a wonderful experience at her restaurant. She seats patrons, waits tables, busses tables, and even brought us a jacket and souvenirs that we left at the table after dinner. (Bet she cleans bathrooms too, total team player). The general restaurant ambience was semi sports bar and semi steakhouse. They are connected to a casino and bar, which is a good time as well as a liquor store. Really anything you could ask for all in one location. The fillet came out a little bit rare, but they were more than willing to cook it longer, and the taste profile was great. The elk T-bone came out cooked wonderfully and had a gamey flavor that I would highly recommend trying if you're a fan of white tail venison (Tennessee boy here). I do think that you should get maybe a bit more asparagus for each $50 meal, but the ambience and service more than made up for the lack of vegetables. All in all, we highly recommend this for a nice dinner out, and the service will more than likely make you smile! read more

We ate dinner here on our second night at Yellowstone. We came before the dinner rush and was seated immediately. I had the elk T- bone steak for dinner with baked potato. It also came with asparagus. The steak must have been cooked early and let to sit longer than needed as some parts of it were on the well side. I decided to eat it anyways. The medium rare portion was good. The baked potato was smaller compared to the other baked potato I had the previous night. Though I did find this size much preferable. The huckleberry cheesecake was delicious. The huckleberry sauce as not too sweet. The cheesecake texture was light. My son enjoyed it. I found the staff friendly and our server engaging. read more

In fact, as we simmered down from a long day, we realized they have a full bar of all kinds of spirits and more than a few craft beers. And a full steakhouse menu, too! I ordered the elk T-bone and it was quite good - not very gamey. I asked for it as medium rare, but it came out a little more medium than rare, but yet it was still delicious. The cut is somewhat smaller than a T-bone steak from a cow so it may not be filling if you're expecting something large to fill you up. My son had a spaghetti and meatball dish and he accidentally dropped the meatball on the ground. They were kind enough to replace the meatball free of charge. Our server, Luwana was very sweet and interacted with my five year-old. Don't forget to eat, finish your meal with a huckleberry cheesecake. It was divine. read more

Four of us walked in and were immediately seated although it was busy. The staff was outstanding. Not often can all four at a dinner agree but the 3 meals we had were incredible! Broasted chicken was enough for two and also excellent. Very clean throughout the restaurant. Wild game meatballs were better than any other meatball I've tried. We stopped in on a Wednesday night and it was relatively busy. It seems your experience can vary greatly based on your waitress. Our waitress was slow and not very friendly but I saw other waitresses more on it and getting food out much faster than ours. When our food arrived, I had the ribeye sandwich, it was alright. The steak was tough. The mashed potatoes were quite good. For the price, I'd expect better. No need to return or recommend. Nothing fancy steak house is a lot bigger than it looks. Even though it was crowded we were seated right away by a very pleasant hostess. The menu is a mix of steaks, burgers, wild game and Italian dishes with wild game in it. We had the Beef Ribeye and the Great Lakes Walleye both dishes were good & was a lot better than we expected from an old restaurant in a tourist town. The only problem is there service, after we were seated it took a while for our waiter to take our drink order and then bring them. We noticed that some tables were getting a bread basket but we had to ask for one. Then our waiter was bringing the food to other tables that ordered after we did but we're served first. This neat spot in West Yellowstone features an interesting old-timey ambiance with a moving train chugging along overhead. Our server was very friendly and conversational and recommended some of their best meals. We went with the elk ravioli and lasagna. The ravioli was good but the lasagna was very oily which was a bit off-putting. For dessert, we ordered the huckleberry cheesecake which was disappointing given that it was just a regular cheesecake with a little bit of huckleberry sauce on top. read more

First of all, we were thrilled to see it was open, as so many of West Yellowstone's restaurants had already closed for the season. It was a real neighborhood kind of a place, and by that I mean totally unpretentious and without any of the foo-foo fanciness that pops up in resort towns now and again. Their menu was solid -and concentrated on burgers, sandwiches, steaks, local elk, bison and walleye, and Italian Pasta with a "Montana Twist". More on that soon. We started off with a complimentary basket of house baked bread that was so good it just about disappeared in ten minutes. I felt like having a beer, so checked out their beer list of local beers before choosing a Halo Huckleberry Hefe ($6) by Lewis and Clark Brewing of Helena, Montana. Huckleberry is a local specialty, and nearly every gift shop sold jam, jelly, honey, and candies made from it. We both love Italian food, so we zeroed in on those Italian Pasta with a Montana Twist specialties. My wife chose the Bolognese ($23.99) for "Elk and bison meat sauce tossed with rigatoni pasta and topped with shaved Parmesan cheese." I went with the Meatballs ($24.99) for "Elk and bison meatballs tossed with bucatini pasta and house-made marinara sauce". Wowie... were both dishes great. The Elk and Bison tasted pretty close to beef, and I have to say my meatballs were excellent. I tried a bite of the Rigatoni Bolognese and it was also excellent. The house made marinara was a standout. Our server Emily was a charmer and really enhanced our dining experience. Simply put, we loved Bullwinkles and thought a $57 dinner with a drink and great food is a very solid value. read more

Left the park late and was looking for a hot meal. We came across Bullwinkles. Only about a five minute wait which wasn't bad. The sweet hostess brought us to our table and delivered water as well. The Resturant was clean and inviting. We ordered a side salad to share which was fresh and quite large. The blu cheese dressing was a ten, thick with chunks of cheese. I ordered a burger with fries. They claim all burgers come medium but mine was well ( dry) on a nice bun. The French fries were cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the open faced 10 oz rib eye steak sandwich. We were visiting Yellowstone and had a great family meal at this restaurant. Every bit our food was excellent. We started with the cheese curds with dip - it was a huge portion. My teen announced they were the best of his life. Between us we also had the lasagna, wedge salad, and a filet. The steak was cooked perfectly... which doesn't happen everywhere. My son loved the lasagna and the portion was more than generous. I had a specialty cocktail and a local beer, both enjoyable. The hostess and server were prompt and friendly. The owner, Brenda, chatted with us and was lovely. I have nothing but good things to say about the place. It was our best meal in West Yellowstone. read more

Brenda & Rachel greeted us immediately upon arrival. We'd seen the sign in the window "immediate seating" and boy o' boy was that true! We were served by Rachel, who was very friendly and very attentive and fun! My mom had ordered a drink, with 7-up, but it tasted just a tad off, and Rachel (without a second thought) fixed it for us right away. The food was excellent -- I had their bison & elk meatballs with the bolognese sauce made of bison & elk too. The pasta was nice and thick, and the whole meal was hearty. Just what you want when visiting the park. My folks loved their meals too, my father had their Elk ravioli that he nearly passed out from enjoyment from and my mother had their 8oz filet mignon which she couldn't finish and I which I did the next day -- and it was still amazing, even cold. We loved it so much we returned the following evening. I had the same and my dad had their broasted chicken, and my mom had their fried prawns that she also couldn't finish (she doesn't eat as much now) but again loved. Sadly that second day we didn't have Rachel. But I took the liberty of checking out their bar next door (which also serves the same menu) and Lo & Behold, Rachel was there. Went to the bar portion of this restaurant shortly after arriving in West Yellowstone on a Tuesday afternoon. Great place to grab a beer and watch sports - about 7-8 large TVs throughout the bar area (maybe more). Very casual atmosphere. The bartender, April, was not friendly or welcoming - but maybe she was just having a bad day. Nevertheless, we still enjoyed our time here. We tried the Spinach & Artichoke dip along with the Roasted Mushroom Bruschetta appetizer, both were absolutely delicious and great to share. The dip was very rich. We literally came in at 10:24 and there was clearly a sign that said they stopped serving food at 10:30. We knew if we were lucky enough to be served, we would get something awful. But, Matt the bartender absolutely hooked us up. He said nothing was off the table to order. We ordered the Elk Ravioli and Bison/Elk lasagna. There was one lady, whom at first I thought was the hostess, who seated us, and brought us waters. Then she returned to take our orders. We shared one order each of the elk and bison lasagna and Caesar salad. The lasagna arrived in a full-sized regular lasagna dish; and the Caesar arrived on an oval platter. By the end of our meal I believe our lady is actually the owner since she commented on her staff, and gave her thoughts on how the chef had created such great tasting lasagna that eliminated a lot of excess oil without drying out the lasagna. We were in Yellowstone 2 weeks ago and I was researching a fun, western themed restaurant. The website gave a few recommendations, but Bullwinkle's Saloon caught my attention! It had such a homey vibe, with its Western decor, but also beautifully decorated for Autumn. We were sat pretty fast although the saloon was quite busy. The food was absolute comfort food! Delicious! My Mom had the elk chili which was very tasty. My Dad enjoyed his burger and I wasn't so hungry so I asked for chicken fingers and French fries. It was on the children's menu but I told our waitress, Janelle, that we would pay full price. The huckleberry lemonade paired well with our dinners. Janelle was very nice and attentive. When we received the bill we saw she had included the kids meal price which was definitely not necessary, but very nice! Bullwinkle's Saloon had both a liquor store and casino attached to the restaurant. The food was delicious and the bar was known as "Rocky's"! I loved the friendly, western vibe! We went for steaks. I ordered a filet and it was ordered medium rare. It was overcooked and dried out but had good flavor. Salad is not an option for a side. My son ordered the ribeye and it lacked flavor and was also overcooked. My daughter ordered the bolognese and the pasta was overcooked and seemed to have not been freshly cooked. We have eaten here a few times over the last 10 years and it's always been good. Their recent changes are over the top. We came on a Friday night and got seated right away. They had my favorite whisky available and a very good wine list. We started with the duck wing appetizers and they were great. On another day with a salad and this would be my go-to. Then two in our party had the elk ravioli and my hubs and I had the elk osso buco. After the first bites the table was moaning. Just excellent. Came here visiting Yellowstone and Island Park during Xmas break. Was craving something other than beef and Montana is known for Bison and Elk meat. Went ahead and took a leap of faith and ordered the Elk steak, the picture below. The Elk steak tasted better than most beef steaks. Had less marbling, but had so much flavor, perfectly cooked medium rare. I would absolutely try elk again and may order steaks to be sent to my home. Service was also outstanding. I hate to give low stars but service was not stellar and could not award higher. Came here with a coworker as it was suggested by the hotel and it was down the block. Walked in to a few people ahead of us, the hostess was like a chicken with her head cut off. She would walk up to the counter look at a list then walk away. She did this about 5 times and never once asked us how many people were in our party. Then another party of about 4 came in 5 mins after us. So while standing there and never acknowledged, I walked up and put my own name on the list and lady behind me made a throat clearing sound of disgust because she thought she was going to be seated before is. Took the hostess about another 5 mins before we got seated. Since it took so long we already knew what we wanted. I got the Elk raviolis. The portion was huge, could have shared. When I say they are stuffed, that is an over statement. They did have a lot of filling in them and that was great. The sauce was nice and creamy but not to thick. Served with a loaf of sourdough bread. Love me some sourdough. It was busy and quite noisy. read more

The hospitality is off the chain. The two employees running the bar and restaurant were attentive to everyone and worked great as a team. We came here twice while we were in town because the meat loaf is that good. Prices are just right, and the staff are rockstars. The atmosphere is primarily a bar, so do keep this in mind if you are passing through. Music is a little louder but it's fun. Second night it wasn't as loud. The food is great! The meatloaf is a must. I recommend the gravy of the side just in case. But the flavor is fantastic. This is a lean beef and bison mixture with balance herb and pepper seasoning, with a little bit of minced veg mixed in. Solid solid dish! The bison short ribs are melt in your mouth good. The meat falls right off the bone. There really no other way a short rib should be. Other great dishes include the roast duck that I really had my eye on, but it so popular they didn't have the ingredients in house. The elk ravioli was another stand out dish on the menu. The food service was timely and the food was perfect temperature. Kitchen staff didn't miss a beat, even at peak hours. Everything remained under control. One of our long time favorites in west Yellowstone. However, this last visit was well below what we expected. My wife ordered the trout and I ordered the 8oz filet. I like my steak medium rare and that is how I ordered it. It came out medium well. Not only was it over cooked but it was very tough. Not what I expected. My wife's fish was very dry and over cooked as well. So we will put this on the bottom of our list for now and won't be returning anytime soon. The one thing you can count on here is that for a couple, you are not getting out the door for under $100 without any alcohol included.
