The updates here make the experience different. There are pros and cons to progress, but these are mainly pros for me. Restaurant is cleaner with a much better ordering system. Food has always been pretty consistently good, but you can tell there are also some changes in the back that are making the overall experience better. I had a sandwich I've never had previously, the fried chicken sandwich. Epic. Pickles are the nice thick and crunchy ones, not the cheap flimsy and flavorless. The chicken was high quality. The fries, which I've had hundreds of times, were better than previous. I prefer a fully cooked fry. This was hit or miss before, I've been served many soggy ones here. Bunhuggers is a Flagstaff staple, so I'm happy to see these changes for the better. We will definitely come more often now. read more

We went to this place while passing through Flagstaff, first thing I noticed is that the interior was absolutely beautiful. the menu looked promising but some of the pictures of food was AI generated lol. The food was very expensive as well, fifteen dollars for the avocado toast. We got our food and the bread just... wasn't good, tasted burnt.band there was a HAIR in our sandwich. Reminds me of the college burger joints of my youth, wooden booths with initials, hearts and "420" carved into them and the Who playing in the background... good times. Night i was there it was almost empty but it's easy to imagine it packed to the gills. First people in the restaurant. Was listed as opening at 10:30 on Yelp but they didn't actually open till 11 so sat around in parking lot for half an hour. Put in my order and 40 minutes later, asked why my burger wasn't ready and they said they hadn't turned on the grill when they opened and were waiting for it to get hot. Then she had the balls to correct me and said it had only been 36 minutes. Told me it would be probably another 10 minutes. No apology, just a look of who the hell do I think I am questioning why it takes 50 minutes to cook a hamburger. The meat on the burger was bone dry. The bun felt like it just came out of a refrigerator. The zucchini was overdone. Two hamburgers, two sides and two drinks cost me $54. I used to love this place when I went to college here but clearly they hired a bunch of lazy depressed clowns. There are five hamburger places within two blocks of this place. Go to any of them. Walked up to the counter to order. Cashier told us it'd be a 30 min wait because it's family weekend so the restaurant was pretty packed. We said that's okay and ordered. 40ish minutes later we get out food. Keep in mind, while we were waiting, I was watching the teenagers cook our food. There was probably a group of four of them just chilling out doing nothing and only one person flipping patties and making fries. One of our burgers was made wrong, so we had to ask them to remake it. Every burger was as thin as my pinky finger. I couldn't believed I waited 40 mins for a burger as thin as an in-n-out patty. Also, the buns looked like they bought them from Safeway. I wouldn't be surprised. We also ordered fried zucchini, but they didn't tell us they were out of ranch... Also, every table was sticky and dirty with used plates and napkins. Like their busboy didn't do anything for a whole hour. So we had to clean our own table before sitting down to eat. They do have a veggie burger! Don't worry, I won't base this review on their veggie burger, though. We took our visiting niece and her boyfriend here for a good burger post- ice skating adventure. I wasn't even sure there was a veggie burger when we arrived, or anything besides the grilled cheese and I was about to revert back to, "I'll get a drink and find something for myself later.. maybe chew on some fries..." but then I found it. I didn't see any other veg-options. One teen ordered the zucchini and it was delicious, the fries are also pretty perfect. You can dress up your burger with mayonnaise, ketchup, onions, relish, pickles, you name it at the toppings bars next to where you order. The two who ordered burgers were starving and loved their burgers. As for the veggie burger, it was a big on the dry side - alas the perfect satisfying juicy burger flavor is the hardest part to get for the craving-vegetarian palate. There's some good beer on hand - Fat Tire, Blue Moon, Sierra Nevada, but no local beers, ironically for a town with so many craft beers. I feel guilty not giving Bun Huggers a stellar review. It's such a fixture, I fear expulsion from NAU and a ban from Flagstaff for not raving about it. I love the rustic feel and the sense of history you get when you sit down. This building is old, with endless initials carved into the wooden interior, as though everyone in this small town were so connected they could leave their mark in one place. Oh well, too bad it's far from unremarkable! What's good about this is that the burgers are grilled over charcoal, they didn't go cheap on the buns, and you've got plenty of toppings to build your own. I prefer blue cheese and onions, but maybe next time I'll go in-n-out style and put an entire salad with thousand island on it. Anyways, I'm just saying there are tons of do-it-yourself customization possibilities, so go nuts. BUT...while I do like my burgers to be done, these were almost burnt to a crisp. Also, they might say they're making their burgers by hand and whatnot, but I could tell these were store bought. They were too dry. Too perfectly round. A modest, 1/4 burger, fries (were were decent) and a fountain drink will set you back around $13. I'm thinking about all the burger combos I can get out there for that price range, and honestly this would fall at the bottom of that list. It's edible and it's cozy, but entirely mediocre. My out of town family loves coming here- I think more for nostalgia than the quality of food (they grew up in Flagstaff and it used to be a hang out spot for them). I was driving through town looking at how much it changed, and saw "Bun Huggers". I always caused an accident swinging into the parking lot. This place has not changed since I was in school, in a good way. The food was as amazing as I remembered it and the interior was mostly like I remembered it, but not in a run-down sort of way. Back in the day, I couldn't go too often being a poor college student, but this time I got the mushroom burger and a side of fried mushrooms and zucchini (way too much food).
