It was nice being able to sit outside in the sun on a chilly day, and the location in Downtown Flagstaff is very central and convenient. We shared the carne asada fries, which were just okay overall. What really took away from the experience was the service. My friend and I wanted to take our time and chat, but we were repeatedly interrupted (multiple times by two different servers) asking if we needed anything else. We paid our bill early and made it clear we were all set and would flag them down if needed. It wasn't clear if they wanted us to leave, especially since the place was pretty empty for an early afternoon. I'd just suggest giving guests a bit more space to enjoy their time. read more

First time trying this place. The ambiance was good and staff was friendly. They are still working out some wrinkles in service, but it wasn't bad at all. I ordered the shrimp taco plate. The rice and beans were decent, but the shrimp tacos were the stars of the show and were pretty amazing. Good sized shrimp with delicious breading. Would definitely order them again. Ambiance, location and the outdoor seating were great. Prime location for a restaurant. Sadly, that's as far as good things go for this place. All plates we tried were terrible, no flavor, cod fish and chips tasted like store frozen ones. Got confirmation, they were from frozen. They didn't even have malt vinegar to serve with them and they brought packaged tartar sauce. SMH. Rice and beans, bland. We did ask for that to be removed from our bill. Even the horchata tasted from powder mix. The worst part is each plate was about $20, just to feel terribly disappointed. Servers were attentive and very polite. read more

We arrived around 8pm on a Saturday after driving from Phoenix and chose this spot last minute with a party of six. Unfortunately, it was a bad choice. The vibe felt off from the start. The bartender was vaping behind the bar, random people were walking in and out filling cups with soda, and our waitress seemed stoned. Orders were wrong or forgotten, drinks came out late and incorrect, and simple requests had to be fixed after the fact. The food wasn't good, but we were starving so we ate it anyway. Salsa had a good flavor, chips were just ok and guacamole was good but much different than what I am used to. This location seems to suffer from a revolving door of restaurants but perhaps Baja Mar will survive where others didn't. But to do so, I think they need to solve their tartar sauce situation. We ate some fish and chips - the fish was crispy and delicate but the prepackaged tartar sauce was dreadful. Come on Baja - do better and make your own! Your fish is nice but that tartar sauce is a crime! The portion was generous and the house margarita was tasty enough that we ordered a second round. Will we be back? Horrible experience. I went to Baja Mar for their "all day" happy hour and when I received the bill, the server took my card without showing me the breakdown on her tablet. When I asked for a copy of my receipt, I realized I was overcharged tremendously. The happy hour price was not honored and an extra gratuity was added merely for the table I sat at. The server told me that she meant to take it off after we already paid. She tried to hand me a couple dollars to make up and then she told me to call. When I talked to the manager about this, she told me I ordered something completely different and I could come in and get a $1 bill. I will never come back here again because they refused to make this right. It felt very intentional and as if they were taking advantage of my group. read more

The food truck was always fantastic and the restaurant has not disappointed. The drinks are solid. The house margarita tasted fresh and strong. Often house margs have a watered down, made in batches flavor. Not the case here. The carne asada nachos were great, pulled high with lots of toppings, and the Birria plate had excellent flavor. We ate at this restaurant in mid January and we thought it was pretty good. We decided to come back today (4/19/25) and it had really gone downhill. We ordered the fish and chips and it was OK, but definitely nothing special. We had chips and salsa at the beginning and half the basket of chips were crumbs. I ordered a frozen margarita and it was primarily chunks of ice. My husband had Dos Equis beer'. They ran out of the keg and gave him a half a glass of beer. They said they'd return with more when the keg was replaced. That all sounded good, but a half hour later, after a reminder, they returned with a glass of beer that was warm. Would've been much better to offer an alternative that was actually chilled. Anyway, we will not be back in the near future. Hopefully it will improve to what it was in January. read more
