After going out and having fun in Flagstaff, my friend and I were hungry. We were on our way back to the hotel, I spotted this place from the road and thought, we must go here!!!! The name alone is what drew me in. The place is two part..one part bar, one part restaurant. My friend and I went into the restaurant and ate there since we weren't really up for drinking. The restaurant does serve beer, but is mostly for dining. We went to the front and they had a real nice menu selection. Burgers, with some chicken items, a salad bar and a few other things. I went with the little hugger with onion rings and a coke, while my friend went with the regular hugger, a drink and fries with cheese. Both were tasty, but when we got our order, we couldn't tell our orders apart because they were wrapped in white paper. The server told us the difference and we figured out who's burger was whose. They have a really cool bar here to make your burgers up as you like. Relish, tomatoes, jalapeno's and a bunch of other items as well. Great salad bar with tons to choose from. Decent beer selection, and prices were great! The place is decorated in an old 70's dark wood theme, and we were enjoying it. It kind of had a cabin feel to it. This is a legendary Flagstaff establishment that has lost touch. Was there last night with friends after a long hike. Decor has change since the last I was there years ago which I am fine with. The double cheese burger I had was fine but one patty was over done. My really challenge was that double cheese burger cost $17 and did not include fries or anything else. Basic single patty burger $11 + extra patty $3.50 + cheese $2 + tax = $17+ . I like this place. It's local, the food tastes great and it's unique flavor of Flagstaff. The menu is small and perfect. It's rustic and a fun place to go with a family. The only reason I don't give this place a 5 star rating is the mindless checkout and pay process. You get a ticket, and you come up when the food is ready and pay. Sounds simple, but it's fraught with problems. When the food so ready, it's hot. You want to eat it then, not after nor minutes paying and checking out. If they have 3 orders come up at the same time you are waiting for a while to pay and get your food that is cooling by the minute. Further, the clerks here seem to actually have no idea how to do their jobs quickly. I've been here half dozen times or more and everytime o just want to pay and get my food it take minutes for the guy to get the food and ring my card up. Really. This isn't rocket science. Why not let us pay when we order ? It would get rid of all this needless waiting while my food gets cold. The place is absolute garbage just like the owner. All the food is frozen. Nothing is fresh. Burgers are small and 9/10 times burnt. Place could use a little cleaning and some of the staff smell like they don't know what a shower is. Let's see, I started a road trip heading towards Flagstaff,AZ today and a friend of mind recommended Bun Huggers as a good place for a Burger . There's nothing wrong with a good burger to start off a long road trip so.. I decided to try it out . Wasn't was I hoping for honestly, also came in a bit early before it got busy for lunch time. Soon as I walked in I figured might be good, I could smell the grill cooking and can't lie it smelled pretty good, so as I waited I was getting excited I ordered a Regular Hug? I think that's what it's called, with bacon and cheddar cheese and fries. Really and honestly expected more, it was also a small burger as you see in the photo, I figured the patty itself would be larger from the looks of this place . I was expecting a huge burger but not at all, it was cooked well taste was decent nothing great the fries we're okay, needed salt .. The food station was the only thing that caught my eye everything so convenient and looks fresh as you see in the photo. This is my hamburger and side of mushrooms. I ask my burger to be medium and it came out raw. They recooked my burger and now it was over cooked. No apologies just handed it back. But the four guys and one female had time to sit in the back talk. I would not recommend. Maybe they should spend more time paying attention than sitting around chatting. Thus place used to be legendary, but that was long ago...Burgers were burnt and dry. The patty on the third pound "big hug" looked like $0.99 burger from Mc Donald's. I realize weight may be before cooking but the only way that patty weight 1/3 pound, ever, was if the included packaging, the pallet and the truck driver that brought it.. Paper bowl full of sloppy veggies didn't help.. Only giving one star because the breaded mushrooms were legit. I can't believe I have never left a review on this place! We used to go here all the time when I was in college. I have never had a bad experience. Now that I am grown with kids of my own, we always make sure to stop in when we are in town. It's becoming a tradition to drive to Flag, play in the snow, and eat at Bun Huggers. They never disappoint. I like everything on their menu, have never had bad service, have never had to return anything to the kitchen. Bun Huggers will always have a place in my heart. This place is a time capsule. Overall good simple burgers and the fried zucchini and ranch is very good. Outdated but in a good way. Dive feel to the place inside needs no updating. Probably represents a flagstaff of 20 years ago before it became so overpriced and unlivable for regular people and was more of small mountain town. If your a foreign tourist visiting the Grand Canyon passing through this is actual American food. Not a chain, not gourmet, not trying to be anything it's not. The young man at the food order counter was pleasant enough. I went next door to order a drink at the bar. The regular bartender ( girl with lots of tattoos and nose ring, Sophi?) said she'd be with me shortly as she went around and refilled all the locals drinks (ok?) and I waited patiently. Then a young girl bartender in training came and took my order. I told her I wanted a Diet Coke and rum , Captain Morgan. She poured a well rum and I nicely said I wanted Captain Morgan and she apologized and brought the correct drink. A "local" decided he needed to butt in and said "I just heard you say rum and diet". I told him he needed to mind his own business. When I saw the regular bartender in the restaurant side, I told her, I wasn't trying to be rude, but hopefully the new girl would use this as a learning experience and double check on the rum choice. She said "well, you were, and he's one of my locals sticking up for us"!I get that, but she needs to realize that it's not just her locals who are her bread and butter! First time customer and most likely not a return customer. We've seen this place several times driving around, was craving a good burger but not from your typical fast food places. The service was mediocre, lots of young people who don't really care too much about good customer service once we ordered and paid we were told it would be about 35 minutes to get our two burgers !! I was like what !? Two burgers. Freshly made on the grill or not it shouldn't take that long! Yes there was an average amount of people there eating or waiting too, but even other places are way faster. I don't wait that long for steaks. Anyways. Once we finally got our burgers we found out we had to add our own condiments at a little island area with different condiment. Oh and the price for two burgers and two drinks (non alcoholic) was over $30 ! The burgers weren't anything special, small and something you could make in your own backyard bbq. This is a bit of a grubby place but it has excellent burgers and hot dogs, as well as a bar here. According to my friend, it has been around forever and it is a Flagstaff staple. Well I can attest to that, since it is usually filled with people, especially on the weekends and at night. Their burgers are generally very good. My favorite menu item is the Steak Burger so I would recommend that. I also like the condiment bar quite a bit, due to it's selection of items to choose from (it is at times poorly stocked, especially during busy times). However everything else about this place is merely ok or passable, so it's the burgers that I really come here for. The fries are inconsistent. Sometimes they are crispy, sometimes they are a bit soggy. Sometimes they are well seasoned and sometimes they aren't seasoned at all. The onion rings are over breaded and gross, and their hot dogs are ok, but nothing special. Their customer service however, is ok. I have never had a problem with the people working here, and to tell you the truth, given that the food here is served cafeteria style, the customer service is nonexistent to an extent. Still I would go here for the burgers alone, hence the fact that I give it three stars. It's a good place to go if you are craving a good burger, but to tell you the truth, there is nothing else to really say about it. read more

Had an opportunity to eat here recently. The burgers, especially the Mushroom Hug, are still my favorite of anyplace I have eaten! Tried the onion rings and the zucchini and they were outstanding. While the place hasn't changed over the years, it was clean and Covid friendly with blocked off tables and partitions and a setup with every burger serving now. Prices quite reasonable for Flagstaff.
