Buna Cafe is a nice Ethiopian spot. The atmosphere is calming with beautiful artwork on the walls and lots of plants near the windows. They weren't busy the few times I visited. I think I was the only customer dining, which added to the calming ambiance. Service is quick. I received my food about 10 minutes after I ordered. For my first visit I tried the lentil sambusa as an appetizer. I received two pastries garnished with mint and sauce on the side. It was good. The breading was crunchy and the lentil filing was tasty too. For my main dish I chose the meat combo plate with siga wot, siga alicha, a house salad and two sides, lentils and greens served with injera. The siga wot and siga alicha beef stews both were tasty but it was missing something. The Ethiopian food I've had is usually rich in flavor but the meat was lacking. The side lentils and greens were lightly seasoned, but the natural flavors of the vegetable and legume came through. The injera was delicious spongy and sour. I enjoyed it. My next visit I got the lamb tibs juicy option. It comes with a side salad flavored with a vinaigrette served on injera. The plating was different from other spots I've tried. For one, the lamb tibs are served on the side in a bowl instead of on the injera, which would give the bread time to soak up the flavors from the lamb. Secondly, a small dollop of spice is placed on the injera rather than cooked with the lamb. As you can see from the photo it wasn't a lot sauce for the amount of lamb. I only had enough sauce for two bites. Overall, this is a great place to visit. If I decide to visit again will request additional sauce.

It's beautiful. It's homey. It's welcoming. It has delicious Ethiopian platters, delicious coffee, neighborhood vibes and friendly service. What's not to love? Come here. Bring wine (or don't) but order good food and coffee. Sit back and relax and feel how good it is to sit outside or in a comfy place with purple velvet couches and service with smiles all around. I definitely recommend this place. The food is delicious and this spot is too. Come here.

This was my first visit to Buna Cafe Philly (in West Philadelphia) but it won't be my last. I've been a huge fan of Ethiopian cuisine since I was a student at Penn in the 1980s, and I've had superb all the way down to simply horrible experiences at dozens of Ethiopian restaurants all over the USA and in several European countries, as well. The food at Buna is fresh, beautifully prepared, and very tasty. Like a few other reviewers have stated, there does seem to be a slight lack of "pop" in the flavor of some dishes here, but in my opinion this is made up for by the freshness and care of preparation of the food. The server I had was extremely friendly, helpful, and attentive. And I loved the physical space of the restaurant itself, with its clean, fun, colorful decor, including nice touches of Ethiopian artwork and decoration. I can't wait to go back!

I would give this place 10 stars if I could. We got 2 vegan combo plates and.... all I'm going to say is that we were heaven. We WILL be going back! Parking was also super easy.

I checked Yelp this was nearby and I could place the order through the Yelp app. It worked perfectly. My order was ready in the timeframe I was given through the app. Great job! I ordered a sandwich and the gift sampler. The Nigerian coffee in the sampler is delicious and I highly recommend it. I have yet to use the suya seasoning packet, the incense added was a cute touch just not special. The first time I went I was impressed over all although the cashier seemed a little standoffish. But I can get past that until........ Visit number two. It's not easy to find parking so it took a few times around the block to find parking. I needed something close so I could take my elderly mother in the restaurant. We asked to dine in however the only available tables I was told were available upstairs. My mother is disabled and unable to walk up to long winding flights. I explained this. In the back of the restaurant there was a meeting of a small group I understand if they've already made reservations for this spot. However! At the front of the store there were two tables and seating in the window is a sofa and a little coffee table. At the dining tables, two people at two different tables who were waiting for their food to go. (The staff mentioned to them their food would be ready soon.) My mother could not sit at the sofa with a low table far removed. They could have ask the people waiting for to go food to sit in the sofa area and allow people who wanted to dine-in to sit at the table? Customer lost no recommendation but I guess they don't need the business?!

Outstanding food with lots of vegan options! We got the veggie combo platter; everything on it was great. We also got the turmeric latte and the chai, both of which were outstanding; the turmeric latte was spicy and gingery, while the chai was more mellow and sweet. It's a very cute ambiance; medium sized and very homey and comfortable.

Really enjoy this spot in West Philly. I love the spaciousness and the warmth of the space. I've been there for coffee and to do computer work in the later afternoon when they open, and at night for dinner. The food was good, though the portions are a bit smaller than some other spots. My friend and I felt like the food was very fresh. It's also BYO! I'll definitely be back for computer time and dinner.

Here, the veggies were delicious on their own. The service was quick, probably about five minutes, and the people were kind. The space was also spacious and comfortable. I do wish it came with another piece of injera, but I'm sure you can buy extra if needed. Overall, I'd definitely come back.

EDIT: after a few weeks I read my review and realized that it comes across as generally negative…read moreeven though my opinion is very positive. I went on too long about the kitfo. Salam is a delicious place with really friendly people. Me and my family have been taking out and eating in about once a week for months. It also attracts people working with laptops, as it is quiet and there's coffee. I am returning the 5th star because why should they appear less than excellent because of one guy's opinion of one dish? Btw the kik alicha is amazingly satisfying. ---ORIGINAL REVIEW I have a lot of positive things to say about this place, and just two complaints. I'm going to skip the positive as it is all repeated here in other reviews, other than to say that while the cooking here is not 100% in the mainstream of Ethiopian cooking, meaning that you can expect the Ethiopian dishes to land some short distance from what you are used to at any other place in Philly or D.C. or NYC etc., it is nevertheless usually delicious. The wots are spiced differently than traditional, there are more middle eastern flavors in general. The first time I came, soon after they had opened, I was disoriented and disappointed, but in later visits I decided I didn't care. The injera is among the best in Philly. Complaint#1: the doro wot sauce can sometimes (only twice) verge into the realm of so intense that you don't want to eat much of it, this has to do with both salt and spices. Complaint#2: This is the one that lost a star. They won't make their Saturday kitfo raw. If you ask for it raw it will be served rare, so the meat has received enough heat to toughen the texture and remove some of the color. I did complain, because I love kitfo and it is one of the most celebrated raw beef dishes, the beef glistening with niter kibbeh butter and looking like a shiny mount of rubies. It is amazing when made according to tradition and kind of lame when Americanized, like so many ethnic speacialties. About 3/4 of the best Philly places make it right, most in D.C. I would guess that Salam is either nervous about hygiene, a real consideration unless you mince your own beef, which is labor intensive. The excuse offered was that the beef got a little cooked by the hot butter, to which the answer is, your butter is too hot. No cooking can happen with this dish. (In Ethiopia a few do slightly cook the beef, but nobody likes those people.) I urge them to do Ethiopia justice and take kitfo off the menu, or do it right. Americans have learned a lot in the past few decades. Tell them what to expect and many will be enthusiastic. It won't work if you let them expect cooked beef. That's all the negative I have, I am looking forward to my next visit for the kik alicha.

This place is definitely the neighborhood watering hole. Can you see people from all walks of life and it's such a chill vibe everyone just gets along. I really love that about this place. Drinks are generally cheap and they have specials going on. Don't expect anything fancy or not on the drink menu. There was a different bartender every night because they were working one day a week each. Unsure if that's still the case now. Service isn't always terrific and can run slow. I've had a few bartenders over the years be less then cordial. Overall, they have been few and far between and the unpleasant ones aren't around for very long. The family that owns this place gives back to the community and even helped with a personal fundraiser that I had. I've met a good amount of my friends in the neighborhood here as well. I didn't know that this is owned by the same owners as Alif (see that in one of the other…read morereviews!), but that kind of tracks. I stopped in for lunch w/ some friends, and I thought everything tasted great! I opted for an order of chicken tenders with fries, one of their featured specials, and I definitely couldn't tell that it was gluten-free, but it is! Looks like they use teff flour for their batter (it does have dairy, though, for those who can't have it). Not that sports stadium chicken fingers are the best kind, but the ones here definitely beat those. Admittedly, I don't often get chicken tenders, but I would get them again here. Some of my friends got the chicken sandwich, which looked to be essentially my meal but with a bun, and another got a falafel wrap, which also looked good. I would try either that or a chicken shawarma wrap in the future. You order at the counter, but if seated, they bring the food to you, which is nice. Not a huge amount of room inside, less than Alif, but enough for a few tables, and just about what I've come to expect in West Philly. Good spot for a relatively quick lunch, and some great gluten-free options to boot.

The mac and cheese was also incredible, with a golden baked top just as it should. Who knew a supposedly Ethiopian spot could also do that Southern side perfectly.
