I had to try Burger & Butcher after my friends were raving about it, an it absolutely exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere is cute, casual, and trendy. I love the convenience of the kiosk ordering. Service was very quick, and everyone on staff was so kind and helpful. I was blown away by their gluten-free menu. They offer gluten-free buns for burgers and sandwiches, gluten-free crispy chicken, and even gluten-free desserts. I tried the Turtle Pie and the Lemon Raspberry Pie--both were delicious, but the Turtle Pie was truly to die for. This was hands down one of the best burgers and fries I've ever had. Gluten-free bread can really make or break a meal, and this place does it right. The gluten-free bun tasted fresh and delicious, the burger itself was incredibly juicy and flavorful, and the basil aioli was insanely good. I also ordered their specialty Cherry Cream Cola, and it was so good that I had to get a second one. It tasted like a fresh, sweet Cherry Coke and was the perfect accompaniment to the meal. I sat outside and brought my dog, and one of the staff members even came out with a bowl of water for him. Such a thoughtful touch that made us feel so welcome. ***2 1/2 stars*** Maybe I'm just not into the concept of smash burgers, but I really didn't get the hype with this one. This was a special request from my top-tier chum from the Kingdom of Sussex, who'd been eyeing up this place for months and petitioned to come here after our NJ Bookstore Crawl adventures last weekend (I wanted to go to the only guaranteed high quality eating establishment in the Kingdom, Farmer's Daughter in Newton but was overruled by the home crowd). I'd heard some decent buzz about it myself and am always up for trying something that looks edgier than the average bear in Sussex, so off we went (even though I had a BBQ later in the day that basically had all of the food that was provided at this establishment - that's on me for sure). The entrance was a little hard to figure out; initially we went to the front of the building but there wasn't an obvious entryway and we belatedly figured out it was on the side. Some extra signage in that regard could go a long way, but not the biggest deal. We got inside, and that's what matters. Very clean and spacious, with some Western/patriotic themes; I can always get down with some longhorn displays and whatnot. The business model/ordering system is a little odd in that it almost offers too many methods, if that makes sense. It seemed like you could get normal table service, but there was also a counter where I think you could place a normal order, or a kiosk at the front to do so, OR a QR code at the table. Lot going on, and ambivalent on what to make of it overall - I guess it's better to have more options in theory, but I thought it was unnecessarily chaotic/confusing. We opted for the scanning of the QR code at the table, which was fine. My chum didn't realize you could tilt the QR display to get a better angle for your phone, but I'm certainly not going to blame Burger and Butcher for that 10 seconds of chaos. By far our biggest issue was the price point. Neither one of us is averse to spending money when the situation arises, but this was pretty egregious to the point where it really tainted the whole experience. We both got a burger and split an order of fries. That was the meal. Now, full disclosure, we got the "better" burger, the Waygu, which was 4 ounces and $15. Not worth it. I think part of is the smash burger of it all, but I definitely didn't notice the allegedly higher quality cattle involved, and I got it plain so no condiments to distract the palate from the essence of the bovine. I would 100% just go for the cheaper burger here, which is $10. The accompanying fries were fine (some were squishier than others, and those found their way closer to my chum for her consumption) but cost a separate $8. It reminded me of Zinburger, which probably isn't around anymore because they constantly gauged you with additional costs for sides like this. And THIS was wild - if you wanted ketchup? No problem. If you wanted literally any other sauce featured on the menu, just a little container of it? At least an extra $2. At a certain point, it's less about the price and more about the principle. And again - nothing we had was significantly better than what you'd get at Five Guys or Smashburger and for the price it should be. The staff was perfectly nice and since this is basically higher-end fast food, our meals came within five or 10 minutes. Fine on that front. But if I want to spend $30 for a burger and side (which is what this came down to, including tip)? I'm just going to go to a nicer, sit-down restaurant with more options and better food. Disappointing and I hope they really reconsider the pricing structure because in this inflationary environment, you're alienating potential customers before they even get to sample the animals. read more

If you're looking for a tasty smash burger this is it. While it's insanely greasy, it's very delicious. I got a double Wagyu and the grease was dripping down my fingers as I was eating it. I would've been ok with a single patty instead of double. I hate that they charge extra for everything. Extra for pickles, lettuce, side sauce..everything that should already be on the burger is an extra. The fries are fried in tallow and are pretty good. They went well with the side sauces I got - cheese sauce and butter buffalo. And also I tried their chocolate milkshake..solid. Overall great filling lunch. But all in all I spent over $50. I was pretty excited to come here. But well... Lets start with the good- good menu, service was friendly and its great that its a BYOB and right next to a liquor store. The burgers and fries were good, not great. The bad: - As soon as you walk in you are hit with a smell of an old ash tray. It is right next store, in the same building as a cigar lounge. I could not get over the smell for the hour+ long time we were there. - We had two cheesesteaks at our table. With both, multiple times, there were pieces of something (fat?) that were big chunks and could not be chewed. There is also indoor and outdoor seating. I like that you either order at the kiosk up front or scan the QR code at your table and place your order and your food is brought out to you. My only complaint is I wish they weren't smash burgers those honestly are not my favorite style of patty but it was still good. Definitely not a fan of their special sauce so next time I will order just a cheese smash burger. Additionally each topping is 0.50 cents. I would give this a solid 3.8 if I could. I do love the idea of this place (no oils/anything fried is done so in tallow), but unfortunately, the chicken sandwich was underwhelming. I chose not to get any sauce on it, but even though there was cheese on it, it unfortunately had almost no flavor. It would have been nice if the breading was salted/peppered. I don't love when a place depends solely on a sauce for flavor. I will say, the chicken itself seemed super fresh, it just wasn't really enjoyable due to the lack of flavor. I really love the aesthetic and overall concept of Burger and Butcher. The space feels intentional, clean, and well thought out, and I appreciate the philosophy behind the food. They do have self-ordering stations for to-go orders if you end up not wanting to wait. People were nice, one even offered to get us crayons for our toddler while we waited. The food itself was really good. But I have some issues w logistics: -The host stand wasn't where you left your name for a table, it was a separate guy w a tablet so people didn't know where the line actually was. -The menu up at the host stand noted that burgers and sandwiches came with fries but none of them actually do when you order (which is ridiculous honestly.) -Everything is an up-charge I mean it's one thing for bacon or jalapeños but lettuce and tomatoes? Any sauce besides their weird homemade ketchup? Even for the chicken tenders? This is annoying also because they sell their sauces bottled and people might be more inclined to buy them if they could actually try them first? -No servers means no service lol I had a question - had to chase someone down. The staff were super friendly and told us we could either order at the counter or we could scan the QR code and order that way. Fairly simple menu . I definitely recommend the double smashed wagyu burger and the cheesesteak and must have an order of fries. Delicious! The cheesesteak looks small but very hearty and full of cheesy goodness I almost didn't finish it . The smash burger had nice crispy edges and some special sauce that elevates the burger flavor . Those hand cut fries remind me of boardwalk fries yummy ! They also make their own ketchup which is thick and slightly sweet . My wife and I were in the area of Sparta for a wedding and the day we were leaving we decided to stop by a recommended burger joint that was serving grass fed burgers and tallow fried French fries. This sounded exactly like the type of place we would love. I got the double grass fed burger, my wife got a single. We ordered a side of fries as well. These smash burgers were the best we have had. I would take this burger over smash burger any day! We asked for the sauce on the side and we could not get enough of it. The tallow fries with homemade ketchup were outstanding. Finally tried the hyped up place. First off I do love that they say they fry their food in beef tallow. We had the organic Grassfed burger, cheesesteak, fries & sourdough brioche donut holes. Burger & cheesesteak were delicious along with the special sauce. Fries were a bit oily in my opinion & seemed as if we got the left over portion. Sourdough donut holes skip, way too greasy. They kinda fall apart when you eat it & taste very oily. (Get them if you're into that) I was hoping for better donut holes. Place isn't the prettiest inside but clean. Service was ok. Place wasn't busy when we were there on a Sunday night. You order from a kiosk at the front or can order from the table using a QR code. The place is new so perhaps there's a learning curve here. You need to order from a kiosk yet the place is set up not to use a kiosk. This isn't Shake Shack after all. For these prices, there needs to be a wait staff. (And why is the default tip 20% ordering and paying on a kiosk????). The kiosk did have multiple options for ordering but there should but multiple types of cheese for a Wagu burger, not just yellow American. A good quality Swiss would be nice. This was one of the more delicious burgers I have had in a very long time! I was really interested in checking it out after seeing the mentions of high quality ingredients, use of beef tallow for their fryer items, and that they make their sauces/condiments from scratch and I am so glad I made the trip to try this place out.....everything was soooooo good! I tried the double wagyu burger with French fries and also got some chicken tenders. They were all incredible but the star of the show was for sure the burger, a super tasty beef blend that was perfectly cooked. The fries were perfectly crispy and the flavor they had due to being cooked in beef tallow was so much better than any fries you'll get anywhere else. The chicken tenders also had a nice and crunchy outside later and a very meaty inside which was amazing. Their home made ketchup was unbelievable too, I never knew ketchup could taste so good...... The best part about this incredibly delicious meal was not feeling like garbage after such a meal. That was the ultimate proof about their quality ingredients and not using the garbage oils that every restaurant uses by default today unfortunately. We had lunch here today. I had been wanting to try this place for awhile after seeing the food featured on instagram. We drove up from Rockaway so the drive was 30 minutes due to the sinkhole traffic and likely not worth it. Pros - Clean dining space with plenty of seating after 1p on a Saturday. - Easy, no wait ordering using the QR codes at the table. - Friendly staff. - Easy parking with plenty of spaces. - Milkshakes are good. Cons - VERY expensive for what you get. One single burger, one double burger, one family fry, two waters and two shakes ended up being over $70 before tip. - A seat yourself establishment with almost little "waiting" on the table (just bringing the food and drinks and then clearing your spot when you're done) should not default to an 18% tip. The minimum I saw as a tip when placing the order through the toast app at the table was 15%. The total with tip was $87. Insane. - I would agree with other reviewers that the food is super greasy. I wasn't a huge fan of this. It does sit heavy afterwards. - While the milkshake was pretty good, it was not worth $11+. Glad we got to give it a try to see if we'd like it, but likely won't return. read more

Review from a poor man. I want to hate this place. I really really do. Because nothing about it is a cheap meal!!! Absolutely nothing. But The problem lies in the quality of the burger. It tastes stupid good!!! Like it has zero reason to be that tasty for a burger. None. I don't know what the seasoning blend they put on the burger is, nor do I know how much beef tallow it is cooked in, but it makes for one hell of a tasty burger. My only gripe is that the burgers are small (but that is what smash burgers tend to be by its very nature.). And the price for everything is way too much. I would love to try the cheese steak from here but I am not spending 21 bucks for a cheese steak. I am glad that A) I am poor so I can't have this all the time B) glad that it is a little bit far of a drive for just getting a burger. C) it is so unhealthy that I couldn't eat it often even if I wanted to. lol. Hard choice between 4 and 5 stars. The food tasted great!!!! The service is very friendly and is always coming around to see if you need anything. The place is clean and very presentable. The only reason I didn't have 5 stars is the price, you could easily go in alone order one of their more expensive burgers, a side of fries and get a shake and it will be around $50. It was our first time here and we can't wait to come back.
